Re: [meteorite-list] Kem Kem and Dar al Gani
Dear Robert, Dar al Gani is the geographical name of a Reg, which is a calcarus plateau located in Libya. I don't know about Jiddat Al Harasis, which is maybe the name of a town or village near by, as Dar al Gani is actually a cry wide area. Best regards. [meteorite-list] JAH, SAU, DAG Co
Hi Frédéric, Rafael, List, This time Matteo was completely right by stating that Jiddat Al Harasis is a place in Oman, far from Lybia and the DAG plateau. I wish to point out once more such mistakes as some collectors consider a precise locality as very important. I have also seen elsewhere (a web site) such a mistake with Sayh al Uhaymir (Oman) also supposed being in Lybia Knowing Sergey and his expertise, not only in meteorites but in their precise locations, I bet it is just an inadvertence or some unwilling mistake from him. In case of doubt, just refer to this superb handy reference that is Meteorites from A to Z (and I am so happy to learn that the new edition is almost issued!) Best wishes, Zelimir At 05:58 14/01/04 +0100, you wrote: Dear Robert, Dar al Gani is the geographical name of a Reg, which is a calcarus plateau located in Libya. Re: [meteorite-list] Tucson 2004 - video
Hello Moni and List, We decided several months ago to not produce a video for the 2004 show in Tucson. While we enjoyed the project last year, we found that our labor of love involved more time and money than we had anticipated. We spent most of our time filming, planning, rushing to meet appointments and doing the always required paperwork. There's an old saying, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. This applied to John and Bob too. We spent so much time working at last years show that we didn't have time for any fun or to simply relax. So, this year we've decided to attend as regular meteorite bums and enjoy the time with our friends. Best to all, John and Bob At 06:48 PM 1/13/04 -0800, moni waiblinger-seabridge wrote: Hi Bob Holmes and John Gwilliam and list, will there be a new video made this year at the show? There was talk not long ago that one of the safest and cheapest options (balancing the inefficiencies of the old throw-away technology against the enormous projected costs to bring a new prime mover to operational status) would be to revive the tried-and-true Saturn VB launch vehicle (with 21st-Century stuff up on the pointy end, of course). Bah! Of all places, one would think that Wyoming would have a sheephole valley, we have none! Predecessors chose not to honor sheep by naming geographic locations, or meteorites after them it appears. :-D In the early 1980's we had over 5 million sheep grazing here. Today there are less than half a million. It seems to be useful to hunt meteorites on those eroded hillsides where the sheep overgrazed. Although I have yet to find meteorites in these areas, the lack of vegetation seems to help the visual searching. Sheephole Valley sounds more Australian to me. Dave F. Yeah, you guys are lucky with all that open space. Here in Georgia, trees grow through the sidewalks in a matter of minutes. We have so many trees, even in the city of Atlanta, that I haven't seen a sunset in years. I wonder if we're still having them? The humidity doesn't help one find a meteortie either. [meteorite-list] Mexican alcohol
Just wanted to add my two pesos worth re: alcohol from Mexico. I travel there 6-8 times/year (we have a small house in Kino Bay). I too purchase the Puro de caña, sin desnaturalizar, 96%. Translated that is pure 96% cane alcohol, not denatured. In other words, OK to consume. Good side is that if your meteorite work is getting frustrating, you can take a wee nip to sooth your nerves. HOWEVER, I can't recommend it - it's pure fire. And very dangerous to use as a cutting fluid. One small hot spot or spark and you're perhaps looking at re-building your shop or house. As MexicoDoug pointed out, you are allowed one liter of alcoholic beverage per adult (18 or over) per day into the States. The alcohol falls under the same rule, so you cannot purchase one liter of alcohol and one liter of tequila and legally transport them both into the States. Another good side here. If you do try, and get caught, you can pour the alcohol into your gas (not diesel) tank and your engine will run smooth as can be. And yes, the price of tequila has more than doubled in the past few years and though still less expensive than most places in the States, it's not cheap - not even the poor stuff let alone a high quality reposada. [meteorite-list] Re: OT: MOON TRAVEL?
Hello List, Does anyone know if we but a base on the Moon, how will we get there? Can we look forward to seeing a new Rocket, or would we rely on the shuttle? It is time for a new form of space travel!!! From the Presidential Fact Sheet: A Renewed Spirit of Discovery http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2004/01/20040114-1.html Second, the United States will begin developing a new manned exploration vehicle to explore beyond our orbit to other worlds -- the first of its kind since the Apollo Command Module. The new spacecraft, the Crew Exploration Vehicle, will be developed and tested by 2008 and will conduct its first manned mission no later than 2014. The Crew Exploration Vehicle will also be capable of transporting astronauts and scientists to the International Space Station after the Shuttle is retired. This is vague whether it will be something self-propellant, or use an existing expendible rocket type for launch. Yet it does make clear that it will be curtains for Space Shuttle. The same fact sheet mentions that the Shuttles will remain operative with the purpose of finishing building the ISS, and will then be retired. - Marco -- Dr Marco Langbroek Leiden, the Netherlands 52.15896 N, 4.48884 E (WGS 84) e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] website: http://home.wanadoo.nl/marco.langbroek weblog: http://home.wanadoo.nl/marco.langbroek/iss_log.html -- __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

I was reading a paper that says that Ghubara is L5 with dark xenoliths I read L3 in cassificaction and its also a regolith breccia, does the xenoliths have to do with the brecciation process? and regolith means that is from the surface of the asteroid isnt? I have a small Ghubara, about 8 grs, but I dont think its very nice, cuz its just black and my specimen does show any brecciation or at leats I cant identify the xenoliths. 2001 Space Collection Rafael B.Torres _ MSN 8 helps eliminate e-mail viruses. [meteorite-list] Spirit Ready to Drive Onto Mars Surface
MEDIA RELATIONS OFFICE JET PROPULSION LABORATORY CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION PASADENA, CALIFORNIA 91109. TELEPHONE (818) 354-5011 http://www.jpl.nasa.gov Guy Webster (818) 354-5011 Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. Donald Savage (202) 358-1547 NASA Headquarters, Washington, D.C. NEWS RELEASE: 2004-19 January 14, 2004 Spirit Ready to Drive Onto Mars Surface NASA's Spirit completed a three-stage turn early today, the last step before a drive planned early Thursday to take the rover off its lander platform and onto martian soil for the first time. We are very excited about where we are today. We've just completed the exploration of our lander and we're ready to explore Mars, said Kevin Burke of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., leader of the engineering team that planned the rover's egress from the lander. We are headed in a north-northwest direction. That is our exit path, and we're sitting just where we want to be. Late tonight, mission managers at JPL plan to send the command for Spirit to drive forward 3 meters (10 feet), enough to get all six wheels onto the soil. After the move, one of the rover's first jobs will be to locate the Sun with its panoramic camera and calculate from the Sun's position how to point its main antenna at Earth, JPL's Jennifer Trosper, mission manager, explained. On Friday, Spirit's science team will take advantage of special possibilities presented by the European Space Agency's Mars Express orbiter flying almost directly overhead, about 300 kilometers (186 miles) high. Mars Express successfully entered orbit around Mars last month. Spirit will be looking up while Mars Express uses three instruments to look down. This is an historic opportunity, said Dr. Ray Arvidson of Washington University in St. Louis, deputy principal investigator for the science instruments on Spirit and on its twin Mars Exploration Rover, Opportunity. The intent is to get observations from above and to get observations from below at the same time to do the best possible job of determining the dynamics of the atmosphere. The Mars Express observations are also expected to supplement earlier information from two NASA Mars orbiters about the surface minerals and landforms in Spirit's neighborhood within Gusev Crater. Mars Express will be looking down with a high-resolution stereo camera, a spectrometer for identifying minerals in infrared and visible wavelengths, and another spectrometer for studying atmospheric circulation and composition. Spirit will be looking up with its panoramic camera and its infrared spectrometer. Dr. Michael Smith of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md., reported how Spirit's miniature thermal emission spectrometer can be used to assess the temperatures in Mars' atmosphere from near the planet's surface to several kilometers or miles high. Spirit's measurements are most sensitive for the lower portion of the atmosphere, while Mars Express' measurements will be most sensitive for the upper atmosphere, he said. Spirit arrived at Mars Jan. 3 (EST and PST; Jan. 4 Universal Time) after a seven-month journey. In coming weeks and months, according to plans, it will be exploring for clues in rocks and soil to decipher whether the past environment in Gusev Crater was ever watery and possibly suitable to sustain life. Opportunity will reach Mars on Jan. 25 (EST and Universal Time; 9:05 p.m., Jan. 24, PST) to begin a similar examination of a site on the opposite side of the planet from Gusev Crater. As of Thursday morning, Opportunity will have flown 438 million kilometers (272 million miles) since launch and will still have 18 million kilometers (11 million miles) to go before landing. JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the Mars Exploration Rover project for NASA's Office of Space Science, Washington, D.C. Yet the moon has harsh environmental challenges.and it seems those challenges are less on Mars. Only the distance is a problem. Re: [meteorite-list] Bush's Space Initiative
Hi John, From what I understood from awhile back, the ice that is on the moons poles(?) would save them a lot of water hauling from earth. With the escape velocity so much less on the Moon, they would have an easier time launching a rocket full of water (fordrinking and such)on the way to mars from there as opposed to the Earth. It would seem to me that a space station orbiting Earth would be the better place to initiate trips to Mars and beyond? I didn't personally hear the speach, but I assume some of the reasons to use the Moon would be that you can't really build a launch pad type outpost floating in space. The surface of the moon would be better, IMHO. You need places to store parts, assemble the vehicle on firm "ground", house inhabitants, etc. Expanding the ISS is probably vastly more expensive than building an outpost on the Moon (once you get there). Also, I believe they're hoping to manufacture the fuel on the Moon from the hydrogen in thetrapped ice. I believe one of the most expensive parts of any lauch is the amount of weight (i.e., fuel)needed just to get that samesoon-to-be-consumed fuel off the ground. Being able to send an empty vehicle to the Moon, fuel it there and then launch it from the reduced gravity of the Moon would be a tremendous savings of money. Personally I've felt we needed to make an agressive, long term commitment to something (!!) for a long time. No offense, but I feel NASA has been prostituted over the last decade or two and relegated to pandering to the public's cause du jour. I mean come ona multi-billion dollar vehicle and all the associated expenses to study the rain forrests and the "ozone hole". NASA should be for space exploration, period. We should be looking UP, not DOWN. Is it gonna be expensiveyep...progress always is. Is it gonna be dangerousyep...exploration always is. Are we going to lose astronauts due to accidentsyes, (unfortunately) wewill. Craig
Re: [meteorite-list] Bush's Space Initiative
This is still NOT proven and in fact, there is evidence there is little or not water on the Moon. When they crashed Clementine into a shadowed crater thought to have water ice, none was seen in the debris. The ISS is fragile and not really a great place to work. Microgravity is very difficult to work in. The Moon would be a much better place and much easier to work in and leave out from. Besides, we need to learn to work on the surface of another planet and the Moon would be a great place to do just that. Re: [meteorite-list] Bush's Space Initiative
Hi, What's so good about the Moon? The TOP TEN Reasons Bush Picked the Moon: 10.) Zero gee has turned out not to be beneficial as we thought it would be but positively dangerous and probably fatal if you float too long. We don't know if it's because it's ZERO gravity or because it's LOW gravity that there are negative health effects. But it's possible that the Moon's gravity may allow humans to work in it much longer than zero gee without ill effect. We hope... We don't really know since we haven't stayed on the Moon long enough to find out. So the first step is... go and stay for a while. 9.) Bush said the Moon was to become a base for future exploration. That means a lunar industrial complex (physical plant and human society) capable OF BUILDING AND LAUNCHING SPACECRAFT has to be created on the Moon. Think about that for a while. Damn tall order. Combine the Johnson Space Center, Cape Kennedy, all NASA contractors and all their plants and personnel, and then move it to the Moon? Of course, there's only a quadtrillion tons of aluminum, titanium, and oxygen (and godnose what else) lying around everywhere you look on the Moon! Two weeks a month of continuous undimmed solar power, regolith full of Helium3 to build clean fusion reactors with, industrial strength vacuum in unending supply for fractional distillation, and a really permissive building code! 8.) Escape velocity from the Moon (with a gravity well assist provided by plunging down at the Earth and missing it) is less delta-v than is required to leave the Earth from low orbit. 7.) An actual solid working planetary surface to build things on. Let's face it, charming as it is to float like a dust mote in orbit, it's damn hard to work without some gravity. We're used to being on a WORLD and doing things there. It'll be tricky enough with just the low gravity. Look at how limited we are in what physical tasks we can do in orbit. 6.) So much for Bush lacking that vision thing. 5.) Naked political ploy to lock up the lunar vote in 2004! 4.) Usamah bin Ladin could be hiding out there!. 3.) The Moon isn't represented in the U.N.! 2.) Halliburton already owns it! And (drum roll, please!) the Number One Reason Bush picked the Moon! 1.) No Registered Democrats on the Moon! Sterling K. Webb - [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: As there are quite a few space savvy folks on this listjust asking a question pertaining to Bush's speech.
