[meteorite-list] Tessera meteorite

2004-02-16 Thread Matson, Robert
Hi Mark and List,

Thank you for putting together the info page on the Tessera meteorite(s).
Prior to reading Dieter's information, I have to admit that I'd been
pretty much neutral on the subject, mostly due to ignorance. While
I'd seen pictures, I had never seen any of the meteorites in person
(and still haven't). I haven't seen any in situ images of any of the
finds, which is not to say that Matteo failed to take such images, but
if he had I would expect that we all would have seen them by now. The
lack of such images isn't so much suspicious as it is unfortunate.

Having visited Italy several times, including driving from Pisa to
Florence to Venice and on north through the Brenner Pass into Austria,
I can report that the climate is quite variable -- from hot and arid
in the south, to colder and soggier in the north. Venice gets its share
of rain (32.4 a year on average over the last 40 years), so meteorites
within 50 miles of there are going to weather fairly quickly. For
example, I wouldn't expect a meteorite to retain a W1 grade 5 years
after falling on open ground there. Yet Dieter reports that short-
lived radionuclide testing of one of the Tessera samples ruled out an
extremely recent fall. I would be curious to know what level of
confidence they place on the terrestrial age being greater than, say,
5 years; there are a number of variables, not the least of which is
the original depth of the tested sample in the meteoroid when it was
in space (cosmic ray shielding). Also, the sample that was measured
was quite small, which you would expect to have some bearing on the
uncertainty of the measurement.

The bottom line is that you have a mystery that you may or may not
be able to solve scientifically. In the absence of hard evidence,
it is tempting to apply probability, psychology and Occam's Razor
to reach a conclusion, which I'm sure many here have done. Consequently,
if I were the finder of such meteorites (essentially in my own
backyard), and lacked witnesses and/or convincing photographic
evidence of the original recovery, I certainly couldn't blame others
for being skeptical. That being the case, I would do my level best
to find *another* stone from the fall, and do as complete a job as I
could documenting its recovery -- in situ photos prior to touching
the find, photos following extraction, a soil sample from the impact
location, and a witness if possible. --Rob

[meteorite-list] Worden Meteorite in Meteorite Magazine

2004-02-16 Thread MARK BOSTICK
Hello Everyone, Did anyone else notice that Matt Morgan and Jurvis Breikss have a Worden article in the next...or very soon to be delivered Meteorite Magazine? I am surprised this "hammer", about 1/10th the size of Peekskill, has gotten as little as attention on the list as it has. When Matt was kind enough to offer a portion of this meteorite for sale I did manage to get a modest 2.4g part slice with crust (http://www.meteoritearticles.com/colworden.html), but now find myself missing I have a larger sample. Looking forward to the article Matt and Jurvis. (Not to mention "Tektite" Hal's Holbrook article and "What Dog?" Kevin's article.) [meteorite-list] Iron meteorites protection - My 5 cents

2004-02-16 Thread Meteoryt.net
 Hello.
I want to describe one protection method for iron meteorites that I use
from
 some time with good results.

I just have many slices of Dronino from one 5kg specimen. Like everyone
know, this is verry dangerous meteorite if is not protected.
First I alvays clean irons in ultrasonic cleaner using alcohol. Then
minimum
some hours on radiator. Next is time for next ultrasonic cleaning, but
this
time in acetone to remove all fingerprits (important on polished slices
like
Dronino) and other dirts from meteorite. Then again is dry time on
 radiator.

Some time ago I received from man who is archaeologist special specimen
that
is used to protect bones, ancient tools and other archeological things.
This is
named PARALOID. It looks like normal clear acrylic plastic granulate or
something
similar. This must be dissolve on acetone and then You can put there for
example iron meteorite. Acetone will dissapear in air but Paraloid will
stay
on surface and on all cracks, holes and inside meteorite make him totally
ressistible on water, dirt from outside. Ofcourse You can use normall
plastic or
transparent varmish for this, but I think its better.

What is importand You CAN'T see if slice have Paraloid layer or not. Its
totally transparent and make ultra thin layer on any surface.
There are many different Paraloid types. For example type B72 is designed
to
 irons and B42 to stones.
I not tested B42 yet becouse I dont have any rusting chondrites to rescue
:)

Anyway I think its much better than transparent varnish, becouse make
thinner layer and its verry easy to remove. If Paraloid is used to protect
ancient things,
then this MUST be verry good, also for meteorites.

Ofcourse this not help if meteorite will start rust from inside.

If someone have any questions, please send me email

[meteorite-list] background abotu selling the TL

2004-02-16 Thread Dave Harris
Hullo!
If anyone is interested I am selling this stuff again because I sold it to a
customer but I was not able to guess the weight as my scales only measure to
0.1 accuracy and when he reweighed in on receipt (which of course he should
do as it is so expensive) he found it it rather too underweight, so
naturally I refunded him asap (in fact over-refunded him to assist with the
shipping) I value my IMCA too much to start arguing over a few bucks.
So, I was sort of glad to get it back as I did like it in my collection and
was regretting it selling it however, the next day I get made redundant
from work and I have to sell it again in order to support my family c. as
my payment is pathetic.
C'est la Vie I suppose.

First time I have ever lost my job in 20 odd years sad really.

So, whatever I sell this for will help in keeping my pathetic head above the
sea of unemployment - in other words bid high and feed my family!!

Re: [meteorite-list] Matteo and his lack of humor - nobody cares

2004-02-16 Thread stan .
Mike,

Someone posting stupid photoshop photos on a little traveled website is NOT
a 'problem'. If thats the biggest thing you have to worry about, then I
certainly envy you. Personally I worry about things like 'how am I going to
pay for that next kilo of martian meteorite' or 'where is the closest tall
building I can jump off of if (when) this 3Kg slice of Brahin starts to
rust'.

Matteo's website speaks for it's self, and quite loudly at that. And IMHO
certain things he says do not make him apear in too good a light to the
unbiased observer.

Why not just leave it at that? When you make problems where there truely are
none, all that ends up hapening is filling up peoples email inbox a little
faster...

To the list: Sorry for my blatant waste of recycleable electrons.. This will
be my last post on the subject.

Yet people continue to defend him. Do the defenders of Matteo believe he has a right to post at all costs? [meteorite-list] Tucson 2004 report, part 3 of 3

2004-02-16 Thread Matson, Robert
Hi All,

Here's my final installment on the festivities at Tucson 2004. As
usual, following the birthday bash at La Fuente, many returned to
Blaine and Blake's room for nightcaps and more fun and games. One of
the more interesting and useful meteorites in the Reeds' room was a
Campo with just the right shape to open beer bottles! Blaine only
half-jokingly confided that it was the most valuable meteorite in
the room. (I believe Chicago Steve has a picture of Mexico Doug on
his website using the Campopener)

Saturday was my day to shop around and see as many rooms as possible.
I started at the Vagabond, and hit everything that was within reasonable
walking distance (the outdoor Mineral and Fossil Marketplace, and the
Best Western Executive Inn on Drachman). Picked up a few nice Sikhotes
in one of the many Russian dealers' rooms -- one shaped like a dog, and
another with double orientation. Eventually moved on to the InnSuites,
which seemed to have the largest contingent of meteorite dealers.
Said hello to Kitty (Marvin was out when I stopped by), and introduced
myself to Bruno and Carinne nearby. They finally talked me into buying
my first tektite -- a cool-looking half of an asymmetric dumbbell that
looks like the head and broken shaft of a golf driver. Even more
interesting is that the shaft is axially twisted. Must have been one
angry golfer...

Said hello to Alain Carion and ogled his many lunars, Martians and
other achondrites, and eventually located Mike Farmer's room which
had an impressive array of meteorites also beyond my budget. ;-)
Finally, I returned to the Vagabond, where I found Nick outside
the Reed's room enjoying the last rays of the day while digging
through a box of NWAs. Blaine was busy inside deciding on whether
to enter a large Taza iron into Michael's auction at the last minute
(it did appear).

I skeedaddled at around 5 in order to have time to grab dinner prior
to the Blood auction. Just about everybody seemed to be there --
even Bob and Beth Verish arrived in time to catch the tail end. I
bid on most of the Martian meteorites, but they all eventually
reached solid market prices or slightly beyond. The Garza house-
smashing stone made an appearance, and while there weren't any
takers (despite Michael's enthusiastic auctioneering efforts!),
it was still great to see it in person.

After the auction I pow-wowed with Adam for a while, had a nice
chat with Anne Black, and finished with a long strategy session
with Bob Verish, Bob Holmes, John Gwilliam and Howard Wu. I think
the only thing that kept us from staying longer is that they were
locking up the building when we left!

Sunday was my long drive home, and my plan had been to leave early
enough to get in some meteorite hunting on the way home. But given
the late wrap-up Saturday night, Sunday was hardly an alpine start.
Quick change of plans -- decided I had to head up to the Westward
Look to say hello to Bob Haag whom I hadn't seen for a few years.
He was the same old Bob, full of energy and passion, and a twinkle
in his eye. Enjoyed seeing his Adamana stone up close and personal,
not to mention the giant slab of Esquel and the iron meteorite man
with the ghostly eye sockets. Bob also had a short video of one
of his ill-fated adventures to Argentina long ago involving that
17-ton Campo (I think that was the approximate mass). Amazing to
see that giant crane trying to lift that sucker. Bob said as the
crane cable tightened up and started taking the load, the crane
itself began to sink into the ground! Ultimately they got it
airborne and maneuvered over to a truck bed.

As much as I wanted to linger longer, I was burning daylight and
wanted to make a little 200-mile detour on my way home (as if a
7-hour drive wasn't already long enough). Enjoyed meeting
everyone! 'Til 2005 (or Denver if I make it)! --Rob

Dear List;
Here is what I did on Tucson's big weekend! First I got a call from
John Gwilliam wishing me a happy snowstorm. Then I went dancing and
partying (drove two miles from home). Met lots of interesting people
that know nothing about rocks or meteorites. .Tucson has a rock
show? Who plays it, AC DC?
Saturday John called again to wish me well again (it was about 15
degrees, and a 12 hour blizzard started on Saturday afternoon) John
noted it was nice and warm. By Sunday morning the wind chill had
lessened from the -20 it was but we still had 0 wind chill and two and
three foot drifts in town. Sunday we plowed the drive way, first time
plowed in 12 years in Rock Springs. Did the spirits of Tucson~not
blow in on us?
As Mark noted below, Perhaps next year nature will be more kind to
us... all...
Missed you all,

Dave F. (snow bank) Oh, almost forgot, on Sunday was the 1 year
anniversary of my finding the 13th. Wyoming meteorite, hopefully named
rock springs, will find out in July. It is not possible to hunt
meteorites now.

[meteorite-list] Mars Exploration Rovers Update - February 16, 2004

2004-02-16 Thread Ron Baalke

http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status.html

SPIRIT UPDATE: Mega Drive - sol 43, Feb 16, 2004

Spirit spent the wee morning hours of sol 43 gathering data about a
wheel-track target with the Mössbauer spectrometer, then tucked its arm
and drove. It used a two-session method engineers call a mega drive in
order to make good progress toward the crater nicknamed Bonneville. The
first driving session covered 19 meters (62.3 feet) after long-running
morning activities shortened the time for driving. After a rest, Spirit
continued another 8.5 meters (27.9 feet) in the afternoon, resulting in a
total drive of 27.5 meters (90.2 feet), a new one-sol record. Sol 43 ended
at 9:58 a.m. Monday, PST. The remaining distance to Bonneville is about
245 meters (about 800 feet) from Spirit's new location.

For sol 44, which will end at 10:38 a.m. Tuesday, PST, controllers plan
touch-and-go activities: deploying the arm on a target called Ramp Flats
before continuing toward Bonneville.

OPPORTUNITY UPDATE: Check Before Digging - sol 22, Feb 16, 2004

Opportunity spent much of sol 22, which ended at 9:39 p.m. Sunday, PST,
making a thorough before examination of the spot selected for digging a
ditch the next sol.

Also, Opportunity completed upward-looking observations before, during and
after Mars Global Surveyor flew overhead looking down. Opportunity and
Global Surveyor have similar infrared sensing instruments: the miniature
thermal emission spectrometer on the rover and the (full-size) thermal
emission spectrometer on the orbiter. Coordinated observations of looking
up through the atmosphere with one while looking down through the atmosphere
with the other were designed to provide a more complete atmospheric
profile than either could do alone.

Sol 22's wake-up music was Invisible Touch by Genesis. In preparation
for digging, Opportunity examined the trenching site with its microscopic
imager, its Mössbauer spectrometer and, overnight, its alpha particle
X-ray spectrometer.

The plan for sol 23, which will end at 10:19 p.m. Monday, PST, is to dig a
trench with alternating forward and backward spinning of Opportunity's right
front wheel in order to see what's below the surface. Inspections of the
resulting hole are planned for sol 24 and the morning of sol 25.

I agree. These guys that defend Matteo, are
anonymous...Stan...Brahindavethey use hotmail and netscape
addresses, but have a much larger ISP. If you are paying these ISP's
for such a service (Internet Providers), why use Hotmail and Netscape?
Don't they have email services for you? Kind of seems like a waste of
money or you guys have something to hide?

Matteo has been asked many times to let let Ken of the IMCA handle the
eBay fraud stuff...but Matteo keeps on and on sending his degrading and
hostile emails to these sellers. What does it take? He's been asked
many times to cool it We've run out of patience and frankly, anyone
with these anonymous email addresses isn't going to change our minds.
The rules are rules and he continues to break them. No, they aren't US
Lawsthey are the rules of the IMCA. An organization he is a member
of. (for now).

Sorry Stan and Brahindave, I'm not afraid to put my name on my emails.
It just seems like someone is trying to hide something here.

I agree with Mike. He is our problem. We have a guy who has been
asked to leave the list, yet continues to post under assumed names and
e-mail addresses, his latest with the names of other businesses
attached (mine). Yet people continue to defend him. Do the defenders
of Matteo believe he has a right to post at all costs? What if it was
you or your business he maligned? I think he is mostly a fraud with no
life, and we are unfortunately stuck with him until he runs out of
e-mail addresses. Art, please contact me off-list for a large
donation to help solve this problem.

whats wrong with being anonymous? this is the internet. the internet IS
ananomous. I could sign my posts as Harvey Nininger, and unless you were
looking over my shoulder while examining my drivers liscence, the name I
attach to my emails means nothing.

Does a name change the essence of what I was saying? I wasnt attacking Mike,
he's a good guy and I have no beef with him, hell I'm one of his
customers... I spent a few thousand $ with him in as many months. I was
simply pointing out that when you feed a troll, they keep comming back
regardless of how many times you ask them to stay away. Or have you guys on
the meteorite list not yet figured out that matteo isnt going to go away
simply by telling him he isnt welcome here? Come on, this isnt exactly
rocket science you know.

I didnt want this to turn into an argument, but I dont take too kindly to Ad
Hominem attacks. You claim I'm 'defending' matteo when i specifically said
things like:

Matteo's website speaks for it's self, and quite loudly at that. And IMHO
certain things he says do not make him apear in too good a light to the
unbiased observer

the guy is a troll

Hopefully he will not go and attack innocent bystanders

If thats your definition of defending someone, then I suggest you never
consider a career change that involves becoming a defense attorney unless
you plan on living off of kickbacks offered by a courupt DA.

You ask why I use a hotmail account? Because this list is full of garbage
posts and petty bickering that has nothing to do with meteorites. I dont
want to junk up my 'normal' email with the garbage, so I use a spam ridden
hotmail account for the list. I used to only read the meteorite list
archives through the web site, and to be frank I'm starting to regret
signing up to the list because of the aparent need to make posts like this.

You dont like matteo? fine. I have no problem with that. you dont think he
should be allowed to help police ebay auctions for fake meteorites? Well I
have never heard of a community that said 'our streets are pretty safe, lets
live a little more dangerously and fire a few cops', but hey, thats your
perogitive. I'm pretty sure I wouldnt get burned by a bogus auction on ebay,
so I dont have to worry about such problems.

I know I'm a newcommer here, and I dont have much right to complain, but I
DO ask for the following favor. PLEASE stop with the garbage posts. All it
does is waste space in the in box of list members. Since the first post I
made suggesting that it's wiser to 'not feed the troll' I have recived
several off list emails from people saying 'someone needed to say it' and
the like, so I know I'm not the only person who feels this way. If you want
matteo's childishness to go away, ignore him. If you dont have enough to do
during the day, and just want to waste time writing meaningless emails, then
stoop to his level and continue to act like children. The choice is yours.

And I PROMISE this will be the LAST post on this subject I make. IF I feel
the need to respond to anything further, I'll just remove myself from the
list.
