[meteorite-list] AD - HUGE Wells Creek Shattercones

2004-04-04 Thread Fred Olsen
Recently there have been several postings about this fascinating site. I
have listed on ebay a huge seventeen pound, yes that is 17 pounds, over 7000
grams, shattercone from Wells Creek Crater, Tennessee. See ebay item #
2235675811 that closes on 4/6/04. or use link:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2235675811&category=3239
. Beautiful examples of horse tailing can be seen in this specimen. This is
the largest sample I have seen from this location and am only selling this
duplicate from my collection to make room for other impact materials.

[meteorite-list] Tschermak and Howardites - Part 1 of 2

2004-04-04 Thread bernd . pauli
TSCHERMAK G. (1885) Die mikroskopische Beschaffenheit der Meteoriten
(Stuttgart E. Schweizerbart'sche Verlagshandlung, E. Koch, 23 pp.).

English Translation: The Microscopic Properties of Meteorites, Vol. 4,
No. 6 (Smithsonian Contributions to Astrophysics, Washington, D.C., 1964).

Translation by J.A. Wood and E.M. Wood

Howardites (1)

Research to date places the meteorites Maessing, Luotolax, Bialystok, Le Teilleul,
Nobleborough, and Frankfort in this class. Of these, the first two have been most
thoroughly studied.

Luotolax has a tuffaceous texture. Greenish-yellow, white, and black fragments
and grains, as well as small fragments of eucrite, are embedded in a loose,
earthy groundmass.

The meteorite as a whole has the character of a volcanic tuff, in which various
minerals which do not normally occur together in the same rock appear side by
side in irregular fragments that seldom display crystal outlines.

Among the transparent minerals, I was able to distinguish three anorthites, four
augites, and bronzite. Anorthite in the small eucrite fragments has the same
character as that in Stannern. In both occurrences the anorthite contains minute
glass inclusions of the same form and distribution. The plagioclase which occurs
in non-eucrite fragments may be exactly like eucritic anorthite, or may contain
large dark inclusions of glass or groundmass, or may be almost devoid of inclusions.

The augite in the eucritic fragments is also identical with that in Stannern. It
sometimes
occurs as brown grains having black striations and cracks filled with black material,
but
usually as yellow granular augite with a finely lamellar structure. The abundant augite
fragments and grains mingled with the stone's groundmass include the two types already
described and also a third variety, greener and with a fine lamellar structure. Many of
these grains are twinned; others contain numerous needle-shaped black inclusions in
parallel
array. A fourth form of augite appears as large, very pale brown fragments without
lamellar
structure.

Bronzite occurs in large, very pale greenish fragments almost devoid of inclusions.
This
constituent is easily recognized by its parallel extinction and its system of parallel
cleavage cracks. These yellow-green grains had previously been taken for olivine; I
noted
they have the cleavage of bronzite. As further proof of this identification, the
mineral
(powdered) was found not to react with concentrated hydrochloric acid.

A few small fragments in the groundmass, as well as some fine-textured polycrystalline
fragments rich in black grains, seem to me to be olivine. The dark grains and fragments
visible with the naked eye consist partly of this polycrystalline component and partly
of fine-grained to cryptocrystalline eucrite such as occurs in Stannern.

[meteorite-list] The best part of this hobby!

2004-04-04 Thread Jack Schrader

Hello list members!  I am a meteorite
hobbyist, not a professional in any way, shape or form.  Just someone who
has grown to truly love this hobby.  I first got interested in meteorites
via my son's interest in astronomy and space in general.  I, not knowing at
the time that you could EVEN OWN a meteorite, found a Dalgety Downs on
Mike Farmer's ebay listings.  This was in the early days way before Gold
Basin and Morocco ever happened on the scene.  Well, I bid on the meteorite
for  my son, won it, and the rest you can guess.  It has been a truly
wonderful experience and a new lease on life for me ever since.  I
have been able to spend many wonderful weekends out in the desert with my
son doing something together that we both found that we love so very much,
hunting for these very special rocks and getting so excited TOGETHER
when we would find one.    The times that I got to spend with my
son are truly priceless and I would not trade those times for
anything.   I have even been so very fortunate as to be able to go to
Oman and hunt meteorites WITH my son!  A truly incredible
experience!  My son's name is Devin by the way, a more wonderful and
special son, I could not imagine.  Many of you may know him personally or
have seen his posts to the list.  I am twice blessed to have two very
special sons!   Even though the meteorites themselves are a world of
fun to find and collect and own, I just wanted to say that I have found over the
years it has been the people that I have met that have been the real treasures
in this crazy hobby.  I treasure the friendships I have made, and would not
trade a single one of them for all of the meteorites you could possibly own in a
lifetime!  I am absolutely sincere when I say this.   I just met Mike
Miller of Kingman.  A true gentleman and a man of impeccable integrity
was my very first impression when we met.  I am certain that any of you who
know Mike personally would agree.  Mike drove seven hours from Kingman to
trade some meteorites with me.  And then he turned around and drove another
seven hours just to get back home.  The meteorites are very nice, but I
found that I very much enjoyed getting to talk with this man for the short time
we had together and realized once again, that this is what it is really about
for me.  The people, not the things.  I look at meteorites as things,
a common matrix that we all share which serves to bind us, the chondrules
together.  For me, it's the people I love, not the things.  At
the VERY REAL RISK of being labeled SAPPY, Jack
Schrader

Dear Sappy Jack,
Like you, I too enjoy the people just as much as the meteorites
themselves. Some of my best friends in the world have come from the
meteorite community and I look forward to our time in the field together
like a kid looks forward to Christmas.

I met Mike Miller a few weeks ago when he and his hunting partner Ruben
were in the Phoenix area on business. Not only are these two guys
first-class people, but they're also dedicated and gifted meteorite hunters.

Devin is lucky to have a dad and a friend like you. Actually, you're
both very blessed that you can share a common hobby that allows you to
spend time together.

Best,

John Gwilliam

[meteorite-list] Why haven't we heard about this?

2004-04-04 Thread Sharkkb8

I have a copy of the "Wellesville Daily Reporter", April 18, 1883.   From the front page:
Fort Worth Texas, April 16:  "A dispatch from Williams ranche (sic) says that at 2 o'clock yesterday morning, a meteor fell in the outskirts of town, killing several cattle, and destroying the dwelling of Martinz Garica, who with his wife and children were buried beneath the ruins.  The meteor resembled a massive ball of fire, and the shock was similar to that of an earthquake.  The meteor is still hot and steaming.  It is embedded in the earth probably 100 feet.  It towers above the surface seventy feet, and will cover about one acre.  The concussion was terrific.  Nearly every window in town was shattered, and the people were hurled violently from their beds and the goods in the storehouses thrown from the shelves.  No lives were lost so far as known, except the Garica family, although several buildings fell.  The cattle fled in every direction.  The air was filled with sulphurous gas, and the wildest excitement prevailed.  This is the largest meteor that has ever fallen, and has already been visited by many people.  It has occasioned great excitement all over the surrounding country."

We have not heard about this because;

1. It turned out to be a UFO and it is now in area 51?

2. Bob Haags great grandfather bought it the first day?

3.The Smithsonian nabbed it and beings it was on private property and not
federal land, covered it up?

4. It was a made up story to hide a murder scene?

5. It was a made up story?

6.

The air was filled with sulphurous gas, and the wildest excitement prevailed.
This is the largest meteor that has ever fallen, and has already been visited
by many people.  It has occasioned great excitement all over the surrounding
country."

I did hear about itas a matter of fact I saw it going overhead (I'm about 35 miles from Fort Worth)it passed over my house, and the entire area lit up like it was noon.

But, there was a really nice 5 gram rusty piece of Nantan ending on eBay, and I didn't want to miss out on sniping it at the last minute.

  Subject: [meteorite-list] The best part
  of this hobby!

Hello list members!  I am a meteorite
hobbyist, not a professional in any way, shape or form.  Just someone who
has grown to truly love this hobby.  I first got interested in meteorites
via my son's interest in astronomy and space in general.  I, not knowing
at the time that you could EVEN OWN a meteorite, found a Dalgety
Downs on Mike Farmer's ebay listings.  This was in the early days way
before Gold Basin and Morocco ever happened on the scene.  Well, I bid on
the meteorite for  my son, won it, and the rest you can guess.  It
has been a truly wonderful experience and a new lease on life for me ever
since.  I have been able to spend many wonderful weekends out in the
desert with my son doing something together that we both found that we love so
very much, hunting for these very special rocks and getting so
excited TOGETHER  when we would find one.    The times
that I got to spend with my son are truly priceless and I would not trade
those times for anything.   I have even been so very fortunate as to
be able to go to Oman and hunt meteorites WITH my son!  A truly
incredible experience!  My son's name is Devin by the way, a more
wonderful and special son, I could not imagine.  Many of you may know him
personally or have seen his posts to the list.  I am twice blessed to
have two very special sons!   Even though the meteorites themselves
are a world of fun to find and collect and own, I just wanted to say that I
have found over the years it has been the people that I have met that have
been the real treasures in this crazy hobby.  I treasure the friendships
I have made, and would not trade a single one of them for all of the
meteorites you could possibly own in a lifetime!  I am absolutely sincere
when I say this.   I just met Mike Miller of Kingman.  A true
gentleman and a man of impeccable integrity was my very first impression
when we met.  I am certain that any of you who know Mike personally would
agree.  Mike drove seven hours from Kingman to trade some meteorites with
me.  And then he turned around and drove another seven hours just to get
back home.  The meteorites are very nice, but I found that I very much
enjoyed getting to talk with this man for the short time we had together and
realized once again, that this is what it is really about for me.  The
people, not the things.  I look at meteorites as things, a common matrix
that we all share which serves to bind us, the chondrules together.  For
me, it's the people I love, not the things.  At the VERY REAL
RISK of being labeled SAPPY, Jack

2004-04-04 Thread Sharkkb8

(OK, OK, in retrospect I suppose I should have posted all this a few days ago, on April First!  Just trying to lighten things up a little, after a pretty difficult list-week)

In answer to the question I posed in the original subject line.the only part of the front-page 1883 story I didn't quote was the first paragraph, consisting of these two sentences:

"The following from yesterdays' associate press dispatches, would, but for a single reason, attract the attention of scientific men the world over.  The reason is there is absolutely no truth in the story:".

I suppose we can only liken this to the tabloids today, with their "Three-headed baby born to Margaret Thatcher, Proud Tom the father?" headlines.  At least this story admits to be being fictional, right from the git-go.

[meteorite-list] Re: proud tom: serious retort

2004-04-04 Thread Fredmeteorhall
Dear Proud Tom;
Fred Hall, of Meteorhall Cartoons here, with this short retort to Big Steve's reply to the latest Proud Tom site.
With sad but fiercely earnest emotion, I must request that Proud Tom continue with his ZANY and IDIOTIC postings. Why sad? Because I now realize that my single box cartoons will never match up to the colossus humor generated by the eight nutty pages of the infamous Proud Tom.
Why zany? After reading the the recent Proud Tom posting, I laughed, I cried in my beer, and I didn't get the correct answer to the Meteorite List Quitter or Sitter question number two ( At least I didn't pick answer number three.) However, I now realize that I must continue creating cartoons about meteorites and the people that love them. Proud Tom, now see what what you have gone and done?
Why idiotic? Well, Mickey Mouse started off as an idiotic idea. After all, a mouse that wears clothes and talks and drives around with a buddy named Goofy, well, sounds idiotic, but look where it got Walt!
Now I'm not comparing the genius of Walt Disney with the creator or creators of "Proud Tom Meteorites", as they MUST be idiots! Why else would they spend so much time on making meteorite collectors and scientists laugh? Pure and simple idiots. I hope they do as well as Walt did.
Regards, Fred Hall

He Matteo.

How far will you go to bring up the IMCA into a bad daylight.
Your actions are far out of proportions.
Please wake up.

To other members .

I've received more and more emails about this kind of actions.,
It seems that the people are directly contacted by Matteo.
This is a matter the IMCA should not tollerate.
And Matteo. please stop mention my name to others that I'm not a
reliable source because
you are still keeping on telling people that I'm ruining the meteorite
business through ebay the last years.
It's not up to you to tell me the minimum amount to start an auction.

I tried to keep calm and normally only report this matter directly to the IMCA.
But after the last time I've had it with you.
I know this is not the way to act but I'm at a point of no return.
And the last I want to do is to end my membership due to one person
With highest regards to all qualified members and thanks for helping me
