But how to get the aubrites from Mercury to
Earth?Although they have longer exposure ages compared to the other classes
of upto 120million years, (where Welten et al. wrote, that these ages
representindeed true times of the transportation from the parent body to
Earth andare not caused by the exposure on the very surface of the parent
body,see:http://www.google.de/search?q=cache:FZePCxa0ntsJ:www.lpi.usra.edu/meetings/lpsc2002/pdf/2043.pdf+exposure+ages+Aubriteshl=de
),wouldn't such orbits be extremely unlikely?Just a

No, I am RIGHT.

If you place your maximum bid the first and only time, then you should walk
away happy from the deal each and every time.

If you win, you the item at YOUR price.

If you lose, you may be disappointed over not getting the item, but you walk
away with the satisfaction knowing that you did not spend beyond your means.

BTW, I see nothing wrong with bidding in the last few seconds. It is still
a valid auction. I have obtained many nice pieces this way and I have lost
many nice pieces to others. Either way, I was happy with outcome because I
did not spend more than what I wanted to spend.

You might be irritated that you lose an auction, but what have you really
lost? Besides, what is ebay supposed to do, stop an auction after a given
individual bids.

Other bidders don't know your maximum bid. How can you say you are the
loser when you were willing to go to x amount anyway?

Also, as someone else pointed out, if you have a sniper placing a bid
against you at the last second, the person isn't quaranteed to win just
because he or she places a bid. What happens when the sniper places his or
her bid and it is below yours?

It seems to me that bidders only have a problem with sniping when they
lose an auction, not when they win.

Only faster gunmen survive.

You are making a rather large assumption, that the faster gunmen will
actually hit his target. What if he misses?

  Hi Mike,

Just bid your highest bid the first time and forget it. If you win, you
win. If you don't, via sniping or otherwise, well you weren't going to
 bid
any higher anyway so what difference does it make whether the other
 person's
bid was entered 10 hours, 10 minutes, or 10 milliseconds before the
 auction
  ends?

 You are WRONG.
Its verry importand when You place bid.

 exam1
If item is placed f.e. for 1$ , and in a first few days will go up to 20$
then You put f.e. 100$ your max bid 3 days before auction ends. So then
many
other bidders will try to outbid You and final price will grown up more or
less slowly, and finally price will be f.e. 90$. You are lucky winner ?
No,
You are lucky looser. And many times You will return from work, log to
ebay
and what You see ? You are outbited and someone win Your item. Nothing
more
 irritated.
 exam2
Without your early bid price is still 20$ and in the next days will not
grow
up in the same speed as with your bid. So finally in last 5 minutes of
auction, item price will be 50$. Someone who is high bidder in last 60
seconds think that noone will place higher price, and then You come. A
lone
sniper, who will place his 101$ in last 20 seconds of auction. Not 100$,
becouse people usualy enter prices as 50, 60, 100, 110, so to be sure you
must put 51, 61, 101$. If You do this in the last 20 seconds Your bid will
be entered in around 5-10seconds before auction end and THEN You will win
the same item for less than 90$, becouse noone can place another bid in
last
5 seconds. Your system is working, buy snipers can win the same items for
 smaller money.

You can say, that this is not right, this is sniping etc. But this is real
life like on old westerns :))) Only faster gunmen survive.

2004-06-13 Thread Jim Strope

Good MorningWalter, list members.

I hate to beat a dead horse at this point, but I think most ebay bidders
try to get an item at the lowest possible price with no regard to what they
would be willing to buy the item at a fixed sale. This is justthe
way most of us conduct ourselves in an auction.

Here is a perfect example:

I currently have a 100 gram DOUBLE ORIENTED 100 gram Sikhote-alin on ebay
that started at a penny. FourDIFFERENT bidders have placed bids and
it is only up to $5.50. See item number 2249907461 if this link does not
work:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemcategory=3239item=2249907461

I think it is just natural for all of us to try to get the best deal
possible and by budding the maximum one is willing to pay on the first bid then
perhaps we feel like we are giving up our control over the situation.

Just my two cents on the subject.

Jim and list,

I agree. I always saw sniping as a stategy used to get the item for the
best possible price. If I decide I am willing to spend $200 for an item
and with minutes left the price is still $75 I may snipe with $200 with
seconds left to see if I can get it for less then $200. If I bid the
$200 with days left, it allows others to raise closer to my bid. I may
still win but I may pay more then if I sniped at the end. If you don't
like being sniped or think it unfair, you can use anti-snipe services.

[meteorite-list] Grapefruit-Sized Meteorite Smashes Through New Zealand Home

2004-06-13 Thread David Hardy
Anyone else see this? This time the experts seem just a bit low on the
value!

WELLINGTON (Reuters) - A grapefruit-sized meteorite smashed through the roof of
a New Zealand house, hitting a couch and bouncing off the ceiling before coming
to rest under a computer.

The 2.9 pound chunk of space debris dropped out of the skyand plummeted
through the tiled roof of the Auckland home on Saturday.

I was in the kitchen doing breakfast and there was this almighty explosion,
owner Brenda Archer told the Sunday Star-Times newspaper.

It was like a bomb had gone off. I couldn't see anything, there was just
dust.

Archer's one-year-old grandson had been playing nearby minutes before it hit.

It is only the ninth meteorite found in New Zealand and the first to hit a
home.

The Archers, who are following expert advice by drying the rock out in their
oven, plan to sell it or give it to a museum.

Experts believe the meteorite, a chunk of an asteroid, could be worth more
than $6,300, the newspaper said.

2004-06-13 Thread Nicholas Gessler
Yes, what is an anti-sniping service.
Is the idea to overwhelm the server with incremental bids so that the
snipe can't get in edgewise?

Another voice in praise of sniping.
I use it quite a lot and it often works...
I suppose you might consider it a shock and awe tactic.
It might catch other bidders off guard.
But since you never know how many others will be sniping at the last
minute, it's still the high bid wins.
It's equivalent to saying, the action (auction) really takes place in the
last half minute.

Such tactics are common in live auctions too:
When a bidder makes an offer without waiting for the auctioneer to call for
bids.
When folks jump bid, as was the case in our Tucson auction, requiring the
next bidder to bid above the last increment.
It doesn't always work, my jump bid in Tucson was ignored (Michael, you owe
me a cup of coffee for this oversight!).
(Just kidding, Michael...)

Cheers,
Nick

worth more than 6300$ is a pretty open ended statement, isnt it?
I dont know if any of the people who routinely chase falls will publuically
say what they typically pay for items, but would many dealers offer much
more the 5$/gram for a common chonderite? the price seems to be about
right...

after all, the garza stone has been offered for as low as what, 10$/gram and
is still on the market, isnt it?

Hi Nick List
I agree Nick and heres my thoughts.
There is a venue(s) which will extend an auction if a bid is received in the
last few seconds...its purely a profit driven tool.
Basically, only a handful of venues are supported by most sniping
software...to many differences and sudden changes to support all of them I
think (even though the number has dropped over the years as ebay drives them
out of the market).
Are you against a sniping tool because you might get out bid and not have
time to place a new bid?

Or, are you against a sniping tool because it doesn't allow for true auction
activities, where an auction could go on for a long time as a last minute
bid war develops (I actually like watching them, but thats another story).
Even though, in a real auction, the auctioneer actually controls the end of
the auction, not the bidders, and once the gravel hits the podium, the
auction is over unless shill bidding can be proven.

Would you rather see anti-snipe tactics such as a couple venues use, which
will allow for more bidding and the end of the auction gets extend for each
bid placed within some time of end of the auction. This, by the way, is a
profit driven tool and has no fair advantage for the buyer since it plays on
the ego and lets one bid and bid until one bidder finally stops because the
amount is just way over what the item is worth and he or she finally comes
to their senses. This still happens on ebay anyway (bidding wars) even
though an auction has a fixed ending time. So, sniping really doesn't factor
in as much of an issue.

I learned a long time ago that there is always someone bigger than me just
around the corner. I could be a multi-millionaire and there would be a Bill
Gates out there waiting on me to make my move.

When a bidder makes an offer without waiting for the auctioneer to call
for
 bids.
When folks jump bid, as was the case in our Tucson auction, requiring
the
next bidder to bid above the last increment.
It doesn't always work, my jump bid in Tucson was ignored (Michael, you
owe
me a cup of coffee for this oversight!).
 (Just kidding, Michael...)

 Cheers,
 Nick

[meteorite-list] New Zealand Meteorite

2004-06-13 Thread bernd . pauli
Hello Stan and List,

Experts believe the meteorite, a chunk of an asteroid,
could be worth more than $6,300, the newspaper said.

would many dealers offer much more the 5$/gram for a
common chondrite? The price seems to be about right.

I don't know how much Peekskill sold for but I think it was
about US$ 70,000 for a 12400-gram ordinary chondrite
(H6, S2; monomict breccia, veined). This would amount
to about US$ 5.50 per gram. Maybe Allan Lang has more
information on that. I got my 13.3-gram slice from David
New and paid US$ 18/g.

Best wishes,

Bernd

[meteorite-list] Taking Offence - A Repost

2004-06-13 Thread bernd . pauli
Hello Gregory and List,

I've been sitting here at my computer for quite some time now,
brooding, considering, reconsidering, and feeling very uneasy
after re-reading this post many times:

I once wrote:

... , I am taking offense to your harmful comments
and the way you twist other list members' comments.

Gregory then responded:

And Bernd is about as nonpartisan and imperturbable a member as the list has.
Isn't there a line of common decency SOMEWHERE, past which a member
deliberately forfeits his own good standing? Sadly, it seems not to be the
case. Thanks for the post, Bernd - I'm sure everyone else feels the same
way too, but there seems to be a curious reluctance to publicly express it.

Well, it is easy to go off but hard to clean up the mess. Were there reasons
why I exploded? Yes, there were! Is it a justification to go off on someone
like I did? No!

I was neither nonpartisan nor imperturbable a few days ago and I blundered
when - though by mistake - I sent Gregory's private comment and my response
to it to the list.

When I told my Pauline (my wife :-) that Gregory wanted an apology, she said
without hesitating a second: Whatever he did, you've made a mistake. Yes,
I think you should apologize!

As you can all see it took some days to sink in but the message finally arrived
at the bottom. So, Gregory, please accept my sincere apologies for my having
gone over the line of common decency.

The only one who dared at least hint at such an uncalled for reaction was
Dave Andrews, who wrote at the end of his mail probably said too much
already. No, Dave, you didn't! Thank you!

I may be one of the major contributors to this List but this doesn't - and above all -
shouldn't give me the right to attack and flame list members in such an unqualified
manner.

Feeling much
better now,

Bernd

It is always a simple matter to drag people along whether it is a
democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist
dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the
bidding of the leaders. This is easy. All you have to do is tell them they
are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and
exposing the country to danger. It works the same in every country.

[meteorite-list] NZ Meteorite Video

2004-06-13 Thread Notkin
Dear Listees:
Greetings. Thanks to those who posted links to the New Zealand TV
news report on the meteorite fall. It's great to see our favorite
publisher, Joel Schiff, being interviewed, and looking very dashing
too in his cattleman's hat and black jacket.

The video clip has been moved to the TVNZ.com archive. Fellow Mac
users with an up-to-date Flash player can see the clip here:

http://tvnz.co.nz/view/video_popup_flash_skin/430529
PC users can view the clip using Windows Media Player here:
http://tvnz.co.nz/view/video_popup_windows_skin/430529

Best line from the lady newscaster: It's likely this meteorite is a
'chon - dree - at' type. That means it chipped off an asteroid, but
more will be revealed when the 4 1/2 billion year old relic undergoes
a biopsy tomorrow.

A biopsy? On a STONE? That's a new one on me : )
But the segment is very interesting and well worth watching. Well done Joel.
Regards to all from sunny Tucson, AZ. 100 degrees today.

Hi Bernd and list,

Your posts for the most part are some of the best if not the best on the list Bernd. I
think we could all take some lessons (hey after all you are a teacher) from your good
nature posts that are most often related to meteorites. It's easy to get pulled into
responding to some of the non-sense type posts and I think everyone has done it myself
included. It takes a great man with character to admit a wrong.

Having talked to you by email many times I know that you are one of the finest
