Stan, For your information NWA 2115 has not been published yet in the Meteoritical Bulletin. There is no doubt it will become official as all of the proper steps have been taken to make it so. It is up to scientists to prove a pairing between the two but I do not doubt a pairing relationship between 1877 and 2115. I have no problem with this because proper steps were taken. Dear List, To show you what kind of person Bob Evans really is here is an example you can check out for yourself. Bob, these descriptions are the property of Meteoritelab, come up with your own DESCRIPTIONS! Our Description and ebay link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3239&item=2268563957 NWA 1877, 850mg fragment of the second "Olivine Diogenite" in private hands, found 2003 in Northwest Africa. A weight of only 312 grams is recorded for this find. NWA 1459 the only other Olivine Diogenite available to the public weighed a mere 49 grams. After cutting losses and type specimen deposits there is less than 220 grams of this material left in private hands including NWA 1459. This material is believed to represent the deepest sample, yet recovered, from the asteroid Vesta. A great deal of time was spent preparing this material. We used a penetrant stabilizer before polishing even begun to prevent the large crystals from being plucked during polishing. This is important because the crystals have cleavages that are easily fractured during preparation. No less than 10 polishing steps on a diamond lap was needed to take these specimens to a 3,500 grit polish, something you do not see everyday. This material is rarer than a Brachinite, a Chassignite or even a Lodranite. Re: [meteorite-list] September 11, 2001
Yesterday, on September 11, 2004, there was a memorial service here in Tempe, Arizona for the victims of the terrorist attacks and the Americansoldiers who have died in Afghanistan and Iraq. The memorial was held at Tempe Town Lakes and included 4,000 standard size flags set up in long rows with each flag representing a fallen American. Each flag had a yellow bow attached to the pole and for those who had died in military service in Afghanistan and Iraq there was a tag hanging on one of the tails of the bow that identified the fallen soldier and also listed the date and place where he had died. It was very sobering to watch hundreds of people quietly moving among the rows after rows of flags lifting the tails of the bows to read the name and brief story written on the tags. The second name tag I looked at was dated September 5, 2004. It made me heart sink to read about this young solder from a little town in the Midwest I never heard of - an American soldier that made the ultimate sacrifice just six days ago. Like Bernd has suggested, take time to remember those who have died and pay them tribute. Re: [meteorite-list] NWA 1110 issues
stan . wrote: is there really any need for this? Yes, actually, this amounts to surrogate strewn field data to be studied at a future time when it is more technically practical. let's be realistic here for a moment. sure an nwa number is assigned to specific fragments you reported - but if the same EXTRAORDINARILY rare material is comming out of the same location, being purchased from the same nomads (either by you, Habibi, or the French) - then assigning each parcel that a dealer gets a new nwa number seems nothing more than down right silly. One might suspect that the material is related however it is not as valuable scientifically until the research is done that validates the pairing. Most everyone suspected that DAG 289 and 276 (?) were paired Martians but it took nearly 3 years for someone to do the research. This did allow a manipulation of the collector's market, I am sure this is a disappointment for the collector who wants to collect every numbered meteorite as opposed to every lithology. If you are suggesting speculation in that material read on. all this serves to do is keep TKW's down via artifical means... The only sector obsessed with TKW are collectors. TKW was established apparently to order the size of falls /finds statistically and to understand how much material was available for research. I think, rightly so, the assignment of separate numbers serves science and only adjunctly serves egos..( you know the main mass bragging rights thingy. "Main mass ownership" becomes an artificial factor out of TKW.) The function of the NomCom isn't so far as I know at the beckon of the dealers and collectors. So we look to the latter party's interest in the functioning of the NomCom decisions. I believe as in any commodity there is an premium on rarity and this affects the market. This often is a premium set on a trap door. With a few exceptions, "investment" in meteorites is largely a shell game. The collector is the last to find out. Classic falls-- long thought bought out, command high prices when found at auction--for a while anyway. For discussion purposes, The collector is the last to find that a major museum traded off a single block of "North Beach County" which equalled 3 times the amount of material in private hands. You already bough it last week and paid as if it were the last available specimen. You go back to the store and find yet another larger piece-- even cheaper and you buy it and another and finally see other dealers selling it at a third of your purchase price. Then you find out the Bo Dealer traded a nice new NWA G3/6 plegiocryst plasmamelt sliver to The University of Azulonia for 1/3 of their North Beach County. Yeah in this case I'd like to know the TKW and WHO has it. We have found time and again that museums will trade off old "classics" in exchange for new material in a heart beat. Their rationale likely has nothing to do with the meteorite market for collectors. if you bought a big allende from the field tomorrow are you going to send it in as a possibly paired, new find and ask it to be assigned the name allende(x)? Ummm mixing apples and oranges. Allende was established as a fall in an area not covered by the rules for area of meteorite concentrations. And yes there are provisions for naming a find of an unrelated meteorite in an existing strewn field or political district. I am happy with the Nom-Com's actions with one provision. I favor for lithology and statistical purposes a NWA "P" category for "Paired". The Paired number would catalog all the subsequent finds--which may run on for tens or even hundreds of years. Ergo NWAP0021 might include NWA (2031), NWA XX(1999) and NWA 00X(2006) with associated recovery age, cosmic age and weathering grade. A study of pairings could include or exclude reported collection data and suggest a subsequent axis of search. It migh allow a statistical treatment to reveal that the earth is going through a 22,000 year cycle of bombardment etc. So I agree under the new rules Anything other than NWA1110 tain't called NWA1110 properly. However, NWA 897 or whatever the monster was is ALL NWA 897* or is it?. The > meteorite is a solid mass of nickel-iron nearly 14ft. long and about > 4ft. in diameter. Hello Mark, Anne, and List, This is the famous, ungrouped, anomalous Mbosi iron with silicate inclusions. According to E.J. Olsen et al., 1996, the Mbosi iron meteorite "contains mm- size silicate inclusions. Mbosi is an ungrouped iron meteorite with a Ge/Ga ratio >10, which is an anomalous property shared with the five-member IIF iron group, the Eagle Station pallasites and four other ungrouped irons. Neither the IIF group nor the four other ungrouped irons are known to have silicate inclusions." Another interesting conclusion by these authors is that the precursor material for silicates in Mbosi, Bocaiuva and the Eagle Station pallasites may come from the C3 chondrites. Reference: E.J. OLSEN et al. (1996) Mbosi - An anomalous iron with unique silicate inclusions (Meteoritics 31-5, 1996, 633-639). [meteorite-list] NPA 10-22-1976 Meteorite Finds Puzzle Scientists (Antarctica)
Paper: Times Herald Record City: Middletown, New York Date: Friday, October 22, 1976 Page: 29 Meteorite find puzzles scientists New York Times News Service BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Within a radius of a few miles in Antarctica, Japanese scientists have found, spread across the ice, more than 1,000 meteorites of diverse types. The discovery is believed to be without precedent, and the Japanese say no ready explanation is known. In the past, there have been meteorite falls that showed the landscape with fragments, but the Antarctic discovery consists of numerous kinds of meteorites that presumably fell successively over a prolonged period. It is estimated that the entire earth receives about one meteorite a day. The Japanese find was described in a interview here Wednesday by Dr. Masako Shima, whose husband collected some of the specimens. Dr. Shima also discussed the finds at the annual meeting of the Meteoritical Society being held here at Lehigh University. The society is an international association of specialists in meteorites and related subjects. The meteorites found on three successive Japanese expeditions lie near Yamato Mountains, inland from the Japanese Showa Base. The first nine specimens were found in 1969. Dr. Shima said she has studied four of them, and that all were of different types. On an expedition in 1974, a rich field was discovered, with 683 specimens, ranging in size up to 12 pounds. Then last year, another 330 were found. The discoveries of all three expeditions lay within two areas close to one another and each 10 miles on a side. According to Dr. Shima, who is with the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry West Germany, only one of the specimens is an iron meteorite. The rest are stones, or of other types such as carbonaceous chondrites. Dr. Edward Olsen, meteorite specialist at the field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, plans to visit Antarctica this December, when the summer begins in the southern hemisphere, hoping to find specimens on the side of the continent opposite the Japanese base. Antarctica is ideal for such collections, he pointed out in an interview here, because the black specimens stand out so clearly against a white background. He suspects past estimates as to the relative abundances of various kinds of meteorites have been grossly biases because the irons and other clearly "foreign" types stand out among terrestrial rocks. That that look like ordinary rocks tend to be overlooked. For this reason, as pointed out Wednesday morning by Glenn I. Huss of the American Meteorite Laboratory in Denver, Colo., a situation like that in the Yamato Mountains, where only objects that have fallen from the sky are found, offers a special opportunity to identify new types of meteorites. He noted that even where falls have been recorded by camera networks, the objects often have not been found. The Yamato collection also offers a special opportunity to determine the true distribution of types. This is turn would bear directly on arguments as to where meteorites come from - to what extent from shattered asteroids, from material that condensed as the solar system was forming or even predates the formation of that system. One explanation of the Yamato collection, Olsen believes, may e that, for thousands of millions of years, ice from the Antarctic interior has been flowing toward the mountains until blocked by them. __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Paper: Sheboygan Press City: Sheboygan, Wisconsin Date: Tuesday, November 6, 1973 Page: 4 Through Roof CANON CITY, Colo. (AP) - A meteorite, nearly six inches long and four inches wide, fell through the roof of Jack Steven' garage. Stevens thought it was just a rock and was about to throw it out when sheriff's officers persuaded him to call experts. Scientists from the American Meteorite Laboratory in Denver confirmed that the rock was a meteorite. Part of the meteorite will be sent to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington and other pieces will be given to the United States Geological Survey. __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
[meteorite-list] NPA 04-22-1976 Jilin Meteorite Article
Paper: Valley Morning Star City: Harlingen, Texas Date: Thursday, April 22, 1976 Page: A6 Largest Meteor Shower Hits Northeast China HONG KONG (UPI) - More than 100 meteorites, including one that weighed a record 1.9 tons, fell over 300 square miles of northeast China last month in one of the biggest meteorite showers in history, the New China News Agency said Wednesday. The official news agency said although the area embraced six communes with a combined population of more than 100,000, the shower caused no loss of life or serious damage. The shower occurred on the after of March 8 when a large meteor - or "shooting star" - entered the earth's atmosphere moving at about 7.5 miles per second. It began to burn as a result of the intense friction and was observed as a large fireball over Kirin City in northeastern Kirin Province. NCNA said the meteor "exploded in the sky over the Chinchu People's Commune on the outskirts of Kirin City and scattered radially in all directions." "Judging by the meteorites already recovered, the shower covered an area of more than 500 square kilometers (310 square miles)," the report said. NCNA said a survey team dispatched to the site by the Chinese Academy of Sciences collected hundreds of meteorites raining in size from one pound to 3,894 pounds, the largest ever discovered. The report said the last of the meteorites stabbed through nearly two years of frozen soil, sank seven yards into the ground and formed a crater three yards deep and more than two yards in diameter. Only two previous meteorite showers have been discovered and studied in China in the past 26 years, NCNA said. The first, which occurred during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), was discovered in 1956 in China's southeast Kwangsi Province. In 1972, a shower of meteorites fell in Kirin Province. [meteorite-list] NPA 03-10-1931: 70 Ton Meteorite Found (?)
Paper: Daily Gleaner City: Kingston, Surrey, Jamaica Date: Tuesday, March 10, 1931 Page: 18 70-TON METEORITE OF NICKLE & IRON FOUND SUPER-HARD METALLIC MASS FOUND IN TANGANYIKA Mr. W. H. Nott, a Johannesburg land surveyor, states that he has discovered one of the largest meteorites ever found in Africa. The meteorite is a solid mass of nickel-iron nearly 14ft. long and about 4ft. in diameter. It lies in open country approximately halfway between Lakes Tanganyika and Nyasa, and is embedded in fairly hard earth for about 3ft. Keeping the discovery secret, Mr. Nott went to the nearest village, Mbeya, one of the new stations for Imperial Airways. Here he secured a prospecting license and returned to the meteorite. He prepared a set of pegs and beacons, strictly according to mining laws of Tanganyika, and stakes off an area of 40 acres as a base-metal claim, with the meteorite in the exact centre. Trenches and other elementary workings were made, and the unique "strike" was legally looked upon as an outcrop of iron. The natives of the district regarded the meteorite as an "evil stone," because they had repeatedly tried to make assegais knives from it, but had found it impossible to cut. To secure a sample of the meteorite Mr. Nott obtained a particularly good hacksaw and set his boys to work sawing off a tiny piece. Working relays, they took four hours to remove a piece hardly two inches across. Even this required the use of a sledge hammer and cutting from two sides. Mr. Nott first estimated the weight of the meteorite as about 70 tons but other calculations make it 84 tons. Its constitution will be analyzed by the metallurgical department of the Wiwatersrand University. Nickel, iron and chromium are likely to be the principal ingredients - The Morning Post __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Hello Bernhard, and Steve. I think Steve is using the term "double cut" to refer to what we have been calling a "quarter cut". Essentially an end cut that has been cut in half in a plane perpendicular to the original cut face resulting in two cut faces intersecting at a 90 degree angle.
