G'day Bernd & Francesco,
Ah yes. What a beauty NWA 3098 is! It is also this month's favourite at
my
site. There is a pic of the meteorite at the below link. Very interesting
meteorite!

Francesco, Rumurutiites and Kakangariites are clearly chondritic.
Let's take the LEW 87232 Kakangari-type Antarctic meteorite. The
thin section does show chondrules and chondrule fragments.
As for the R-chondrites, although the lower types have relatively
few chondrules, they do have them. Ouzina (R4) is even said to have
abundant barred olivine and porphyritic chondrules. I don't have any
Ouzina, so I can't tell.
My NWA 3098 slice from Stefan Ralew also shows several chondrules
even though it is an R5.
Best wishes,
Bernd

[meteorite-list] Ad - Air Abrasion Tool

2004-11-06 Thread Adam Hupe
Dear List,

We are giving up a key piece of equipment below our costs. It is called an
air abrasion tool which can be used to prepare the most delicate of fossils
or clean meteorites. It has two grit tanks so two hardness' of grit can be
used on the fly. Used single grit units generally cost in the thousands
which anybody who has seen these offered at the Tucson show can tell you.
We decided we preferred to acquire fossils already prepared and never want
to be accused of freshening up meteorites with it. We prefer to sell
complete meteorites in lightly cleaned original condition.

For test purposes only, we tried it on a few meteorites with the most
stubborn calcite and the results were amazing, the crusts took on the
appearance of a fresh fall. If you use fine enough grit you can even remove
red clay stuck in the finest of contraction cracks and leave the harder
crust untouched. Why, you can even make the most weathered piece of Zag
look just like Amgala. A hint, there is only one unit like this in Eurfud
and it has been used a lot recently. To see this awesome machine click on
the link below:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=43570&item=4335288284&rd=1

You would be hard pressed to find a rebuilt unit anywhere near the wholesale
price of this one.

All the best,

1.5kg piece and 15g piece is a little difference.
I hoped that Amgala price just stabilized from10-12$/g to 5$/g similar (or
under) to other fresh sahara falls. They are all cost from 5-10$

So If Moroccans can/want offer it now for 1$, then tomorrow someone will
send here BIG RETAIL PROMOTIONS SALE, Amgala at 1.95$ and next week someone
other 1.45$/g :)

So where we will be on december ?

Thats few of my "not fresh" ideas at 0:20AM

[meteorite-list] NWA 1774 and NWA 3098 Rumurutiites

Hello John, Jeff K., Stefan, and List,

When Alex Seidel and I got this beautiful R5 from Stefan, we echanged
several mails re: classification of this R5 because we both felt we were
looking at an R3-5 (my mail to Stefan dated Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004).

My collection piece (4.9 grams) is a triangular slice with fusion crust, numerous
chondrules and several angular and subangular light-brown clasts. Some clasts
seem to be composed of unequilibrated material and are a deep black color with
chondrules and mineral fragments enclosed. Some chondrules have a thin black
seam and one chondrule is a tightly packed aggregate of worm-like pyroxene laths
in a white groundmass of anorthite (not quite sure if it *is* anorthite).

Best wishes,

Bernd

[meteorite-list] An offer: shop+domain+hosting

2004-11-06 Thread Bernhard Rems
Hi list!

I have worked hard the last few weeks (and had a hard time being silent
about that *g*) building something I think will be most interesting for
most of you: I am proud to be able to offer you a complete, automated
and easy to use shop for your meteorite sales, including setup, your own
domain and hosting.

After a lot of research on the internet I have found a shopping cart
that is ideal for meteorite stores. After I have set it up, you don't
need any programming skills or HTML knowledge to upload and present your
meteorites. It handles different categories and subcategories, allows
you to accept paypal, credit cards (if you have a merchant account) and
many other payment options. You just enter a description, upload a pic
(pics are resized for a thumbnail view on the fly), add the price and
the item is ready for sale. The cart even handles your mail exchange
with your customers, alerts you about sales, does backups of your
database and allows you to specify s&h for foreign or domestic shipping.
You can highlight products, enter rebates and much more. You can easily
change the look of the shop to fit into your homepage's color scheme.
And: it's multilingual for the admin and the user!

I have registered a domain and bought a server where I can build this
shop for you (and this server will be exclusively for the shops, so the
loading times will be VERY fast). The domain is www.metsale.com (not
active yet), and your domain would be something like
meteoritesaustralia.metsale.com (grin) (just replace the first part with
the name of your web appearance).

The setup fee is $50 ($25 for IMCA members), monthly hosting cost is
$25, including 500MB webspace (should be more than enough even for the
largest shops) and 10GB transfer (same here, that's a LOT). Compare this
with other offers NOT including a fully functional shop. You get a shop
that is ready to use, you can start filling it with content right away.
The server has excellent connections to the internet and works extremely
reliable.

Even if you run your own website, this shop is perfect as an addition.
Just link to it from your website, and back to the website from your
shop. No more fiddling with HTML, layout, no more hassles with
processing payments.

For those interested, I have set up a demo shop where they can play
around with the admin section and have a look at the shop itself, just
to get the feeling how easy this thing is and how little work there is
involved once I have set it up for you. Please mail me and I will give
you access to the demo shop admin section.

I hope you find this offer interesting - I think this is something a lot
of people have waited for (including me). Please contact me off-list
with any questions.

Regards,
Bernhard Rems

Re: [meteorite-list] Tailess Meteors?

2004-11-06 Thread Chris Peterson
Hi Tom-

I'm surprised you found this unusual. I'd say that at least 25% of bright
meteors leave no trail. Depending on the composition of the meteoroid, its
velocity, altitude, and angle of entry it is very possible that very little
material was being ablated, and that the conditions were unfavorable for
producing significant atmospheric ionization.

My allsky cameras are sensitive enough to record trails, and I have images
with a range of trails, from invisible to several seconds persistence, all
with meteors of equal intensity.

A meteor that produces a bright trail and has a terminal explosion is a good
candidate for producing meteorites. If the explosion occurs nearly overhead,
start looking!

Well, it's a bit of a stretch but...
Got a call from a chap at the Johnson Space Center this week who was trying
to find out more information on a product my company manufactures. This
product is a small fan which NASA uses in the space station to help ciculate
air over desicant pacs and in turn reduce humidity. These are battery
operated blower units with permanent magnet motors.

Some of my little fans must now be replaced and the spent ones are being
moved by the Russians to the "trash bin" which will be returned to the earth
and destroyed as it enters the atmospher. The Russians have asked NASA to
advise if any of the spent cargo has permanent magnets and if so how
powerful of a field do they produce. I guess they need to be careful to
ensure that none of this cargo can interfere with the space station systems.

So... I was thinking of my poor little fans, which are still good, ands how
they will burn up in the atmospher. Then I realized that they will become
little meteors. Perhaps, if some are well protected by other debris, they
could even become meteorites. Hum.

Cheers,
tett

Hi Nels and Thomas,

Don't worry, you are not the only ones to feel the same and even some
hunters who sell some of their finds do feel the same, like me! The best
times I have with meteorites are first when hunting for them in the Sahara
Desert, and second the great people I meet on shows around this passion,
sharing it with them. I did not know at all this community 3 years ago, and
I can tell you that I do not regret anything now!
Best meteoritical wishes,

Hi Bob, Ruben, and List,

Oops, sorry if my words should have given rise to any doubts
regarding the sincerity and/or integrity of the finders involved!

No, there is no doubt about my Franconia specimen being
(a) a genuine Franconia meteorite and (b) an H5 chondrite.

Bob, please let me now quote from your own mail to the
List as I was referring to *that* part of the story:

"At the time I wrote that article, it was thought that the
finds being made by Mike Miller and Ruben were not paired to
Franconia. Mike thought that his finds were from a different fall."

Best wishes,

Bernd

Hello Ruben,

It appears that you made a typographical error in the
above sentence. When you wrote "January 2003", didn't
you mean to write "January 2004"?

If Mike Miller made his first find in October 2003,
and then Mike and you searched there for several more
months, it would only follow that it was at the
February 2004 - Tucson Gem & Mineral Show that the
news of a STREWN FIELD was leaked out.

But, as luck would have it, you are somewhat correct
about "January 2003", even if only by accident. That
happens to be the date of my first Franconia web page:

http://meteorite-recovery.tripod.com/francnia/francnia.htm

And astute readers who attended the Tucson Show in
*2003*, or viewed the video by Gwilliam/Holmes of that
Show, will remember my appearance on that video where
I "announced" the recent finding by John Wolfe of the
Franconia STONE.

Months would go by before a "strewn field" was
discovered to exist.

But of course, all of this was detailed in my
Franconia article in the May 2004 issue of "Meteorite"
magazine. At the time I wrote that article, it was
thought that the finds being made by Mike Miller and
Ruben were not paired to Franconia. Mike thought that
his finds were from a different fall.

But we now know that the Franconia STREWN FIELD was
independently found by Mike Miller AND by John Wolfe.
Of course, all of this was detailed in the following
issue of "Meteorite" magazine in the article by Geoff
Notkin.

Hope this clarification makes some sense.
If not, I may post a more detailed explanation, later.

Hi,
The first Franconia meteorite was found on Oct. 31
2002 by John Wolfe (see Meteorite Mag. Vol. 10 No. 2)
No others were found till Mike Miller found 3 small
pieces one year later in Oct 2003. (See Meteorite Mag.
Volume 10 No. 3)Mike and I worked quietly for several
months cleaning out the small side of the strewn field
till January 2003 when our secret leaked out at the
Tucson Gem And Mineral show. We continued working the
strewn field for months and eventually found several
other meteorites which are still being classified.
Franconia is classified as an H-5 chondrite.
Hope this helps.

Buona sera Francesco,
Hello List,

++
Franconia is a bit more tricky. The piece I have is
supposedly an H5 - according to the seller (R. Garcia)

Best wishes
from Germany,

Bernd

Hello Bernd,

When you say "Franconia is a bit more tricky", I'm not
sure what you mean. Are you not sure that Franconia
is an H5? I would find this surprising, given all
that has been published in "Meteorite", not to mention
MB#88.

Or, are you not sure that your particular specimen is
a piece of the Franconia (H5) meteorite? If indeed,
you did obtain it from Ruben Garcia, then you can rest
assured, because all of Ruben's finds are being
examined by ASU. So, even if your particular specimen
wasn't classified, you have it from ASU via Ruben,
that at the least, your specimen is "most likely
paired to Franconia (H5)".

Should a new/different classification come out of the
Franconia locality, I'm sure we will hear about it
very soon afterwards.
