[meteorite-list] my day at jason's

2004-11-13 Thread Steve Arnold, Chicago!!!
Hello and good afternoon all.It was a very nice day down at jasons. It was
a much easier time driving down than the first time.Jason has amassed
quite
a collection. He said he has over 1200 meteorites, from crumbs to kilo's of
everything. He aquired a few nice dispaly cases where he has put all of his
collection. It is so impressive, my mouth is drooling.I got there at 9 am.I
saw his new baby, and growing sam.I also found out he is going to be a
daddy again.MY OH MY!!Anyway we sat down and started talking and trading
meteorites.I showed him the remaining campos sales pieces that I have
forsale. He was like a kid in the candy store. He wishes he could have them
all.He liked what he saw in them and said, that he does not know why the
larger ones are not being scooped up.I aquired 5 new pieces for my
collection.I got a 2.4 gram endcut of MURCHISON,a 1.3 gram slice of
TALAMPAYA,a 1.5 gram fragment of NWA 1955,also a 26.6 gram part-slice of
NWA 1931,and finally a 12.7 gram slice of NWA 801 with a bunch of ARMORED
chondrules.I was happy with the trade. He has a piece of carver that I want
to pry from him.Oh well I stayed till 12:30 and headed home.Less than 3
hours down and up from his place.I really encourage everyone next time,
who lives in this area,or is in the area who really wants to see a real
WORLD CLASS collection, please come with me again to see this man's
collection. He only has 1000 more than me.And my god, his micro collection
is just to die for.And all the NWA 1929 PIECES HE HAS, O
big.And big pieces of NWA 1877.HH000I can only imagine
having a collection that big.Oh well maybe someday I'll sell or trade my
88.6 gram slice of HAH 237 to aquire some world class pieces.Well we both
had a nice time seeing each other, and good time it was. Thanks again to
you for your opening up home to me.

Dear Lee Shen Sheng and List Members:
Welcome to someone from Taiwan. I have lived in
Taiwan for 16 years and now Japan for 8.
Few Taiwanese or Chinese collect tektites/meteorites
or research them. There is only one researcher that I
know at Academica Sinica in Taipei. I have donated
several to the Taiwanese Geological Survey and one
museum in Taiwan.
A few customers are aware of "magic" tektites, Dzi
beads (`Tien Ju` magic agate beads reputedly from
"Heaven"(99.999 are made in Taiwan and are Fakes) and
sky metal amulets (also fake, reputedly to be made
from metal meteorites); but the collectors are only
interested because they believe they contain
protective powers..as they were told by the
sellers in order to sell them.
If anyone is ever in this part of the world look me
up or if you need help in Asia please ask. There are
two Taiwan meteorites but they have both been "lost".
  Best, dirk rosstokyo

Hi, Tett:
Nice to know a guy who knows Taiwan! I will need to fly to Hong Kong
and Dounguan city for my company on November 22. My company produce magnet
for small motor and others. As you know South China has many tektites
available, but so many wrong Nantan iron meteorites there. I am confusing
with this. Here are China's Rock Research Center's link(China government) ,
but they only have Simple Chinese edition homepage could read(no English):

The reader only need to type "Province" name or Meteorite name in Simple
Chinese. Then, computer will tell you its fell age, meteorite content and
location. It is nice to me, but it has never report in meteorite mailing
list when most of people don't understand Chinese or Most of Chinese don't
know meteorites at all! Although we know different types of iron meteorite
has different kinds widemanns pattern but we must be confusing with Nantan
when those sellers(China farmers) did not want to tell anybody truth about
their found out area in Business! Here, I translate it into English for
Chinese provincation:

Re: [meteorite-list] NWA 1982 and pairings

2004-11-13 Thread David Weir
Hello Pierre-Marie,

This subject was discussed a short time ago on this list - I am copying
the relevant posts below.

-

From: Jörn Koblitz
Subject: [meteorite-list] metal-rich diogenite vs mesosiderite-C
Date: Thu, 16 Sep 2004 03:15:35 -0700

Dear All,

It seems, there is a problem with the class C mesosiderites and the
metal-rich diogenites, which may just be fragments of the same meteorite
shower.

In the last Met. Bulletin 88, the following classifications and remarks
are given:

NWA 1982: an ungrouped achondrite "not paired with NWA 1827 or NWA 1879
mesosiderite"

NWA 1827: mesosiderite (tentatively classified C) "resembles a
metal-rich diogenite... [but is] part of a large, heterogeneous
mesosiderite containing sparse eucritic and diogenitic clasts"

In the abstract by T. E. Bunch et al. (2003) MAPS 39, no. 8 (Suppl.),
p.A19, which is the same MAPS issue with the Bulletin 88, the authors
conclude that NWA 1827 and NWA 1982 are paired and that they "could be
misidentified as "metal-rich diogenite."

So, at least for NWA 1982, we have a clear ambiguity between these two
references.

Best regards,

Jörn
--
Hello Jörn,

Since nobody "in the know" has answered your ponderings yet, I think
I'll add my take on this circumstance. I followed the progress of
analysis of NWA 1827 because I had seen the piece that Nelson had
acquired and I thought it had a unique and interesting appearance. The
preliminary analysis had considered that the data best fit a
classification as a recrystallized, metal-rich diogenite, which was
intruded by an exotic metallic body and annealed within a deep regolith.

In a paper by R. Hewins (1988) a similar description was given for
RKPA79015, but which was taken to be a diogenitic end member of the
mesosiderite body. In a similar way, Clark and Mason (1982) had much
difficulty in their original attempt to classify RKPA79015 (Haack et
al., 1996). They finally used the widths of tetrataenite rims on
taenite to arrive at a classification of mesosiderite for this
meteorite.

Anyway, after extended analyses scientists at NAU determined that NWA
1827 is also consistent with a type 2C meso, fantastic news for us type
collectors (I guess this is still tentative though).

In addition, the abstract to which you refer I believe was the final
result of a joint effort by both labs (NAU and UWS), which superseded
the original classification of NWA 1982, now thought to be more likely
paired with this type 2C meso, comprising at least 26.4 kg.

Read the abstract here:

Re: [meteorite-list] Self Proclaimed Pairing List

2004-11-13 Thread tett
Roman and List,
I have had some surprising results using acid to clean meteorites. I have a
piece of Zag that I cleaned about 4 years ago and it looks like it fell
yesterday. Fresh as can be with no stains. I think many newbie collectors
would be fooled that this slice is from a fresh fall. Bernd would probably
know the truth from a mile off though.

I have also cleaned Juancheng, Selma and many NWA's with great results.
Some others, however, just don't want to clean up. Perhaps as the stain
ages it becomes more engrained in the stones?

Of course I don't clean all my meteorites because I am not 100% sure of long
term affects. Will it crumble in 10 years? etc.. I also think there is
some merit to have "unaltered" specimens.

Cheers,
tett

Subject: [meteorite-list] Self Proclaimed Pairing List

Dear List,
While studying the problems associated with number borrowing I came up
with
a list of the most abused names. I see there have been some improvements
lately in this area such as web sites have been changed, some are using
the
term suspected pairing and others are submitting suspected pairings to
laboratories. This is good news and will help improve collector
confidence.
If every dealer did his/her best to follow the rules set forth by the
NomCom, meteorite collecting could evolve to the next plateau. Here are
a
few examples that could stand some improvement:

Amgala*
Cleaned Zag being substituted, only one well known dealer still at fault.
NWA 1109*
Still being sold as a Howardite - Name borrowed heavily - Self proclaimed
pairings
NWA 1068
Self proclaimed pairings
NWA 1110*
Mass self proclaimed pairings
NWA 1877*
Self proclaimed pairings
NWA 1817*
Self proclaimed pairings
NWA 1827
Self proclaimed pairings
NWA 1878*
Self proclaimed pairings
NWA 1929
Mass self proclaimed pairings
NWA 3118*
Mass self proclaimed pairings
NWA 3140*
Mass self proclaimed pairings
* Studies paid for by The Hupe Collection
As you can see by the number of asterisks we have a large investment in
the
above listed meteorites. This is why we take exception to anybody using
these numbers that has not made their material official. We spend
thousands
every month on the study of NWA material and do not depend on grant
money.
This money comes directly out of our pockets. I hope a month from now
this
list is shorter. I will become more specific if needed in the future.
Now
lets have some fun doing the right thing.
All the best,
