RE: [meteorite-list] Another fake name, serious business

2004-11-18 Thread mark ford

Goes back to the point I made months ago, we need an industry standard
record card (a sort of 'meteorite passport') particularly for the more
valuable pieces, that way valuable info is preserved...

I don't know if this will help, but maybe it would be a good idea if you

dealers start keeping good records of how meteorites are divided and
labeling specimens accordingly. So when you get a new meteorite named
and
you own the whole thing, begin numbering the subspecimens you prepare in

the way that JSC does, by adding a comma and a split number. You can
then
sell something as NWA 3133,10. At least then an educated buyer could
tell
the difference between a "pedigreed" sample and one with suspicious
origins.

I know this doesn't help for the thousands of NWA meteorites already
sold,
but maybe this will help in future cases.

Hello
In Poland we have complete catalog of museums and personal collectors
collection (now 2nd edition). Propably next year we will be have 3rd updated
catalogue. I think every country should have something like this than a
couple collectors from different countries.

Maybe webmasters of Meteorite Exchange or Meteorrite Central can make
separate sub-page with links to private collection galleries. There anyone
can submit link to his meteorite collection.

I preparing right now my collection to show it on one of my meteorite page.

RE: [meteorite-list] Main Mass

2004-11-18 Thread kenoneill
Hi Ken,

I know you didn't wish to argue the point however it is an interesting point
of view and maybe others may wish to comment.

I have seen ad's for slices, fragments etc., were it is quoted "cut from
main mass", under your definition these main masses concerned would now be
"missing" ?

If you find a single stone and cut it for classification does the largest
remaining piece become the main mass or has the main mass already become
"missing"? Then if the remaining largest piece is the main mass, in order to
remain considered the main mass it must never be cut?

If I purchase the second largest specimen of a fall and the largest piece
goes to another collector or dealer who at a later date cuts his piece
making mine the new main mass, how am I ever to know I now have the main
mass ?

With dealers having differing opinions on what is considered the main mass,
when I purchase a main mass am I only actually purchasing a possible main
mass ? What does this mean for the value of that piece as main masses do
have a higher value on the market.

Just as Nomcom gave a definition of pairings should there be a universal
definition of main mass ?

Should there be a main registry for main masses where any change of
ownership or change of mass size (any change)is noted ?

Just as in pairings where market values of materials are effected by
classification market values too are increased by the tag "main mass".

I have main masses in my collection, or have I ?

Any thoughts ?

Ken O'Neill

Main Mass
Here is my two cents . When I started writing ARN's History in 1996
the main mass was the largest single specimen from a find or fall . That
piece and only that piece was the main mass . If it was cut lost or
destroyed the main mass was considered missing . There can be only one main
mass and if it is gone its gone. That's how it was in 1996 at least that's
how I reported it in my books and CD's Space Rocks I , II and III .

Just the way I see I won't argue the point ! Ken Regelman

[meteorite-list] Introducing metsale.com

2004-11-18 Thread Bernhard \"Rendelius\" Rems
I want to introduce my new site to the meteorite community:

http://www.metsale.com

This is a meteorite auction site like ebay - but with some nice
advantages:

- This site is for meteorite auctions only (including books, software,
tools and storage items)
- Metsale allows swap offers to be made in auctions.
- it offers reserve price and buy it now, photos and more.
- it offers a wider variety of auction lengths than ebay.
- you can have a store front in there for free - with its own URL.
- it completely runs under SSL to protect your input and data.
- winning bidders can pay you directly through paypal.
- you can offer a lot of other payment options
- forget ebay listing fees: listing is free of charge, regardless of the
starting price
- forget unreasonable ebay fees AFTER the sale: just plain 2% of the
transaction (instead of fixed amount plus up to 5% at ebay).
- reserve price, buy it now are free for now.
- additional features are priced WAY below ebay.
- in the future, there will be a offline lister like turbo lister at
ebay.

And you get a $10 bonus towards all fees when you sign up, so you can
experiment with all additional options.

To summarize: Metsale.com is ideal for you if you want to put up some
items for sale, since the regular listing costs you nothing. Just enter
a description (with a easy to use editor), upload a pic, set the
starting price and that's all. And when you make a sale, it costs you
much less than on ebay. You can also have a storefront at NO cost (this
feature will be activated later today).

So I invite you all, sellers, buyers and traders, to sign up at
metsale.com. This could become a nice and lively market place - it
depends on you now :-). Please visit us, and please spread the word.

RE: [meteorite-list] Main Mass

2004-11-18 Thread mark ford

Hi

I thought 'main mass' was already well defined? For years it's been the
largest single piece recovered from the fall site. And that's it.

If it gets cut then the main mass was cut - end of story.

if an even larger piece is found at the strewn field then that would
become the main mass. (Or in the separate case of NWA's & pairings, the
new main mass would be classified and would be only the main mass of the
new number that was issued)

But we don't want to talk about pairings anymore DO WE ?!!!

[meteorite-list] Ad - Weekly Rare Material Special

2004-11-18 Thread Adam Hupe
Dear List Members,

This weeks special is NWA2127, a very rare and almost unheard of L4, S2-4,
W1 Regolith Breccia Chondrite found in Northwest Africa 2004. When we first
looked at this meteorite we thought we were looking at an achondrite. We
took a second slice and saw what appeared to be a chondrule in the middle of
an achondrite-type matrix. Our curiosities were peeked prompting us to send
out a type specimen for priority study. NAU, a NomCom approved facility,
reported back that we had a regolith from a chondrite parent body with the
widest range of differing clasts ever observed in a single sample. It was
classified as an L4 because the majority of the observed chondrules fell
into this range. A more accurate classification might be L4-6, S2-5, W1
because these are the ranges found. A total known weight of only 45.2 grams
is officially recorded for this very fascinating and scientifically
important find so there is very little to go around. We arranged to have
the finders look for more but unfortunately no more was found.

To see NWA 2127 please click on the link below and go to "Go see all current
items for sale by this member." The weekly rare material specials are
always listed last so you will have to go to the bottom of the list.

Be sure to check out our other auctions because true bargains can always be
found on our ebay auctions. There are never reserves and most items are

[meteorite-list] NWA 3118 Piggybacking Issues and Classification Services

2004-11-18 Thread Adam Hupe
Dear List,

The good news is that dealers are aware of the piggybacking problems and the
ones who do not want to risk their reputations have corrected the situation.
There are still a few dealers engaging in this less-than-acceptable practice
because they refuse to listen or are too cheap or too lazy to acquire their
own classifications. It has been asked, Where can I get my material
classified? If you think you have a pairing and want your very own
classification you can send a 20 gram type sample to the following
institution:

http://jan.ucc.nau.edu/~glg100-p/Meteorite.html

Now, there is no excuse for anybody who deals to borrow (steal) numbers.
Scientist will make the proper pairing conclusions so you no longer have to
depend on the Moroccans for this self proclaimed service.

There are very few dealers who are authorized to use the NWA 3118
designation for their meteorites. There are currently more than six
different CV3s from NWA that are not paired so dealers who assume a pairing
to NWA 3118 should have their material checked out. A total of 5,895 is
officially recorded for this find, not a gram more. We recognize there are
several pairings out there and this is good news for collectors but dealers
who were not supplied by the Hupe Collection should stop using the NWA 3118
designation and record their additional weight under a new number.

NWA 3118 dealers known to have official material:

Mark B. was supplied a dealers lot consisting of very small fragments
nothing else.
Jason P. part of team LunarRock expedition H13
Rob W. material is legitimate and claimed in the above weight
ebay Meteoritelab
ebay Naturesvault
ebay Raremeteorites
And a few dealers who sent in material to NAU for pairing purposes but still
should get a new number according to NomCom rules. We thought including
these dealers was the right thing to do at the time because secondary type
specimens were deposited. If they can supply paperwork from NAU, you can be
pretty sure their material is ok.

My problem is with several well known dealers who have sent nothing in for
study, piggybacking NWA 3118. Let this serve as a warning to stop if you do
not have paperwork. I am giving dealers a fair chance to make it right
before publicly mentioning names. If an excuse is given that a Moroccan
dealer said it is NWA 3118 then think again because this is not acceptable.
Moroccan dealers are not authorized to pass out NWA numbers or come up with
official pairings.

I will include names of those who are improperly using the NWA 3140
designation, as well. We have way too many resources tied up including time
and money to let this slide much longer. I look forward to the day this
problem is solved because we can get back to the pleasant business of
collecting and studying these rarities.

Sincerely,

Adam, not to be a pain, but there is absolutely nothing rare or important

[meteorite-list] Colorado fireball on November 16

2004-11-18 Thread Chris Peterson
There was a large fireball over Colorado on Tuesday night at 20:45. Looks
like it started near Kiowa and ended over Deckers. The height ranged from
62km to 31km, and it was sparking and flaring over much of its path. The
velocity was low (<15 km/s). I wouldn't be surprised if it was shedding
material over western Elbert County, and in Douglas County a few miles south
of Castle Rock- also into the mountains, but the hunting isn't so good
there.

I've got details, including videos, at
http://www.cloudbait.com/science/fireball20041116.html . I'll probably be
posting more images as they come in, since more of our Front Range cameras
probably caught this. I'll post a ground path map later, too.

Instead of letting it fly, instead of pouring more oil in the fire,
I'd like to tell those interested in what might be special about
Adam's L4 that there are only a handful L4 regolith breccias
among them Grassland (Lynn County, Texas) and NWA 832.
They may even be the only ones - so far.

[meteorite-list] Not Finding Life? Dig Deeper

2004-11-18 Thread Ron Baalke

NOT FINDING LIFE? DIG DEEPER.
>From Mari N. Jensen, UA News Services, 520-626-9635
November 18, 2004

A place so barren that NASA uses it as a model for the Martian environment,
Chile's Atacama desert gets rain maybe once a decade. In 2003, scientists
reported that the driest Atacama soils were sterile.

Not so, reports a team of Arizona scientists. Bleak though it may be,
microbial life lurks beneath the arid surface of the Atacama's absolute
desert.

"We found life, we can culture it, and we can extract and look at its DNA,"
said Raina Maier, a professor of soil, water and environmental science at
the University of Arizona in Tucson.

The work from her team contradicts last year's widely reported study that
asserted the "Mars-like soils" of the Atacama's core were the equivalent of
the "dry limit of microbial life."

Maier said, "We are saying, 'What is the dry limit of life?' We haven't
reached it yet."

The Arizona researchers will publish their findings as a letter in the Nov.
19 issue of the journal Science. Maier's co-authors include UA researchers
Kevin Drees, Julie Neilson, David Henderson and Jay Quade and U.S.
Geological Survey paleoecologist Julio Betancourt. The project was funded by
the National Science Foundation and the National Institute for Environmental
and Health Sciences, part of the National Institutes of Health.

-

The project began not as a search for current life but rather as an attempt
to peer into the past and reconstruct the history of the region's plant
communities. Betancourt and Quade, a UA professor of geosciences, have been
conducting research in the Atacama for the past seven years.

Some parts of the Atacama have vegetation, but the absolute desert of the
Atacama's core -- an area Betancourt describes as "just dirt and rocks" --
has none.

Nor does the area have cliffs which harbor ancient piles of vegetation,
known as middens, collected and stored by long-gone rodents. Researchers use
such fossil plant remains to tell what grew in a place long ago.

So to figure out whether the area had ever been vegetated, Quade and
Betancourt had to search the soil for biologically produced minerals such as
carbonates. To rule out the possibility that such soil minerals were being
produced by present-day microorganisms, the two geoscientists teamed up with
UA environmental microbiologist Maier.

In October of 2002, the researchers collected sterile soil samples along a
200-kilometer (120 miles) transect that ran from an elevation of 4,500
meters (almost 15,000 feet) to sea level.

Every 300 meters (about 1,000 feet) along the transect, the team dug a pit
and took two soil samples from a depth of 20 to 30 centimeters (8 to 12
inches). To ensure the sample was sterile, every time he took the sample,
Betancourt had to clean his hand trowel with Lysol.

"When it's still, it's not a problem," he said. "But when the wind's blowing
at 40 miles per hour, it's a little more complicated."

The geoscientists brought their test tubes full of desert soil back to
Maier's lab, where her team wetted the soil samples with sterile water, let
them sit for 10 days, and then grew bacteria from them.

"We brought 'em back alive, it turns out," Betancourt said.

Maier and her team have not yet identified the bacteria that come from the
extremely arid environment of the Atacama's core. She can say they are
unusual.

She said, "As a microbiologist, I am interested in how these microbial
communities evolve and respond. Can we discover new microbial activities in
such extreme environments? Are those activities something we can exploit?"

The team's findings suggest that how researchers look for life on Mars may
affect whether life is found on the Red Planet.

The other researchers who had tested soil from the Atacama had looked for
life only down to the depth of four inches. So one rule, Quade quipped, is,
"Don't just scratch the surface."

Saying that Mars researchers are most likely looking for a needle in a very
large haystack, Maier said, "If you aren't very careful about your Mars
protocol, you could miss life that's there."

Peter H. Smith, the UA planetary scientist who is the principal investigator
for the upcoming Phoenix mission to Mars, said, "Scientists on the Phoenix
Mission suspect that there are regions on Mars, arid like the Atacama Desert
in Chile, that are conducive to microbial life." He added, "We will attempt
an experiment similar to Maier's group on Mars during the summer of 2008."

As for Maier and her colleagues, Betancourt said, "We're

[meteorite-list] Mysterious Boom Heard in Virginia

Northside Boom
WRIC TV8 - Virginia
November 18, 2004

A mysterious boom noise is shaking homes and scaring neighbors. The
monster rumbles have been taking place since late October in the Ginter
Park section of the city, but what's bothering residents is
investigators can't figure out where the noise is coming from.

"It's the loudest noise I've ever heard. It's huge and it comes from
under the ground. It shakes the house. It's a terrifying moment that
stops you dead in your tracks," said one resident.

"Some of the things we're investigating would include methane or natural
gas sewer gas, flights overhead, air national guard, something that
might cause a sonic boom. So far, we're come up dry on all accounts,"
says Bill Farrar of Richmond Public Works.

The city has asked the State Emergency Management Department to help
them investigate. If you live in the area and hear one of the booms,
you're asked to call 9-1-1.

[meteorite-list] Mars Exploration Rover Update - November 18, 2004

2004-11-18 Thread Ron Baalke

http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status.html

SPIRIT UPDATE: Three hundred sols and counting! - sol 292-305,
November 18, 2004

Spirit remains in excellent health and has survived more than 300
martian days on the red planet.

With the Sun still relatively low on the horizon in the early spring
season on Mars, rover drivers are forced to seek driving routes that
keep the rover and its solar panels tilted northward for energy reasons.
That constraint, plus the rocky terrain, will challenge rover drivers in
the coming weeks.

Over the last few weeks, the electrical "brakes" on Spirit's right-front
and left-rear steering actuators (motors) apparently failed to disengage
during drive attempts. The most likely cause of this anomaly is the
buildup of insulating material on the electronic relay contacts that
indicate that the brakes are disengaged. To help ensure successful
future drives, engineers decided to permanently ignore the
"brake-disengaged" indicator. If their theory is correct, the brake will
actually be disengaged despite the "failure-to-disengage" indication. If
they are wrong, a fuse in the brake circuit will safely blow when they
attempt to move the steering actuators. In either case, driving
operations will not be adversely affected.

A few sols ago, Spirit's engineering team discovered an electric-circuit
grounding problem between the rover chassis and the power bus return.
This incident occurred at the exact time the Spirit team was performing
an inspection of the instrument deployment device, or robotic arm. The
inspection sequence commanded one of the arm joints to a position beyond
where it had previously been. That particular joint, joint number 5, is
the rover arm turret, which rotates the four rover arm instruments into
position. This coincidence may indicate that the joint 5 move somehow
created the electrical short; it could also just be coincidence. The
mechanical team has not found any reason to suspect a failure in the
joint 5 cabling. To be safe, the engineering team has constrained the
use of joint 5 on Spirit and Opportunity to avoid this extreme position.
The constraint is not expected to significantly impact normal
operations. The apparent short may also be the result of a failed
measurement circuit. The short, if real, has no immediate effect on the
rover, but does remove one layer of protection against effects of future
shorts should they occur.

Between sols 292 and 298, Spirit completed its studies of the rock
called "Uchben" and drove west about 2 meters (almost 7 feet) to a rock
called "Lutefisk."

Between sols 299-303, Spirit finished its investigation of Lutefisk.
Lutefisk, a rock with some interesting nodules, lies a site roughly 40
meters (131 feet) above and 2700 meters (1.67 miles) away from Spirit's
landing site on the Gusev plain. Team members should know more about the
chemistry of Lutefisk and its nodules when they receive results from the
alpha particle X-ray spectrometer and Mossbauer spectrometer.

For coming sols, Spirit is in an exploration and discovery mode,
continuing the rover's ascent towards "Machu Picchu" in the Columbia
Hills. Spirit will stop at interesting rocks along the way.

[meteorite-list] When we first looked at this...

2004-11-18 Thread Pelé Pierre-Marie
Hello to the List.

Bill,

I don't think it useful to attack someone on the List.
Contact Greg directly if you have something against
him.

I have a fairly impressive collection now and I have
to say that I bought many meteorites from Greg. I was
never disappointed. We must admit he sells wonderful
samples of meteorites at low prices (maily starting at
$0.01 on ebay). I think I'm not the only one to
consider this.

Everybody knows that meteorites are a market like any
product and I don't find it disturbing that Greg uses
some "marketing words" or commercial techniques to
sell its meteorites.

As I always say, if you don't like a dealer, go to
someone else.

We are all adults and we know how to read the ads.
