RE: [meteorite-list] Wilcox Playa (Arizona) Meteorite
Hello Bob (and list), Bob noted: ..I made another WP find on 2004 March 07.. Congratulations on another find Bob. Bob asked, When was this find made? I was not sure last morning when I made that web page. Since then I have talked with the finder, his wife and his brother, who was in town at the time of the find, in order to try to get a good date. It was found in the fall of 2001. The brother thought October, but I was not able to confirm the month. Bob continued: ...If the ~72 gram stone was found prior to that date, it is WP 003, if found after that date, it will be WP 004 (again, assuming there are no other Wilcox Playa finds awaiting classification). Would I be correct in thinking it is Dr. Jones who assigns the U.S. number names? As you know Bob (which means I am typing this for the rest of the group), In a normal United States findor I guess I should say, in normal meteorite finds not from high collection areas, whoever owns the meteorite will usually submit it for a name, providing a couple appropriate names. These names are then voted on by the Met. Soc. Board. I remember you mentioned in an article a couple months ago (?) that any U.S. meteorite could get a provisional name whether classified or not, and you have implied that it is important for all meteorites to do such for chronological reasons. I wonder about such as I own a couple meteorites found by your team members without name/numbers, which would make personal cataloging easier. [meteorite-list] Metsale.com - no end of auction fee this year
Hi! As you know, I have opened metsale.com a couple of days ago (you can buy, sell and auction your meteorites there). A big thank you to all the people who have already opened an account there. Well, my intention is to give this site a good start. The more people use it, the better the auctions will be. So I thought about an additional goodie and came up with this idea: Listing your items there has been been free from day one (no listing fee like on ebay). And now, until December 31st, there won't be an end of auction fee either. This means: you will get what you get. So: there is no excuse anymore to NOT list some of the stuff you want to sell. Everything is there: auctions, dutch auctions, reserve price and buy it now function. Just like ebay, but for free :-). Please go there, look at the auctions already running, register an account and buy, sell, auction. http://www.metsale.com Bernhard PS: Those signing up get a $10 bonus towards other functions on the site, so you can experiment with highlighting, exposing your item on the front page and much more without spending money. __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Ray DeRusse at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Greetings List; Matteo wrote an eamil to Steve Shoner asking him what is this? And Steve Shoner asnswered in part. What is this As far as I remember I made no agreement with Ray DeRusse other than to trade a sample of Takysie Lake for some of his so called stellar grains. I have made no conclusion on these samples, nor at this time do I intend to do any work with these as to ascertain what they are. This is not exactly correct. (I will find his emails ).I did make two trades with Steve, however I never asked him to test or determine what the stellar grains were in the slide, never. That has been determined and I sent them to him as a novelty and a trade. He sent me two samples of Takysie Lake and we determined that indeed one sample was consistent with the information in the MAPS article and the other was chemcially an augite rich lunar microbreccia. He sent me a long long email basically in distress saying he and Ninninger were convinced it was lunar but that the scientists in Arizona would not look at it again. Somewhere I have copies of these emails. But let it be known that we never asked him to identify anything for us. Why would ask him to do something for us that we can do ourselves? That makes no sense. Now having said this about this trade with Shoner, if any of you think that Mr. Shoner did not grab that slide and run to the lab to look through a microscope and examine the stellar grains, you are out in lala land. If you think scientists in Arizona have not looked at our material, you are out in lala land. No reasonable person and certainly no prosecutor is going to believe that our sample to Steve Shoner has been sitting idle somewhere. As far as Badolotti recieving a lunar sample for free he's not the only one that has a sample. Matteo keeps harassing Badalotti and us and everybody. If Matteo wants a sample he can ask Francesco Badolotti and if Badalotti wanst to give him some that is OK with us. We sent a sample to Badalotti because of his devotion to the lunar science and the Moon, he deserves it. Now to Dr. Tanuki or whatever you call yourself. You write; What is this person`s point? If he has scientific data? on his lunarand other material, why does`t he present it and be quiet instead of attacking scientists and their real research? To attack Dr. Rubin, the fine scientists in Texas, Mike Farmer, Matteo and Steve Schoner is counter-productive and completely uncalled for. I don't know where you have been, but we have never launched an attack against anyone first. Some of the idiots on the list and there are many, have launched unwarranted attacks on us first. We responded with an equal measure of force. You're very right it is counter productive to attack scientists, if it is warranted. If I have made claims against any scientist it is sustainable by a direct or indirect body of evidence and it is not a big secret that if you engaged in scientific misconduct fraud and abuse against us we're coming after you until we receive satisfaction. Because we are not going to allow abuses against us under some sort of cloak of authority, by a scientist. If I were them, I would come clean long long ago because now the Federal Government has a bigger clean up job to do and believe me they working on it and we are woking with them. Finally to Matteo, an honorable mention, you need to get real about asking NASA, JPL, JSC or Alan Rubin, any scientist, or whoever to shut us down. Aside from server problems we are having, we're not going anywhere. The reason for this is that its too late for them. Based on the stack of documents I just sent out by a federal request. We are under the cloak of authority and protection by certain governmental agencies. The people you keep asking to help you would be better off finding a small dark, quiet corner, to pray. [meteorite-list] Was Elbert King...now Smithsonian on being territorial
(Try this again...sorry if you get more then one of this same e-mail but this message just doesn't want to post - Mark) Hello Lisa King (and list), Thanks for sharing your memories of your father with us. Should you think of other little stories and would like to share them, I am sure that most of us would find it very interesting. Lisa wrote, The Smithsonian was very territorial about meteorites during the late 60's and early 70s. The Smithsonian was quite territorial with meteorites from at least 1932, when Edward Henderson became assistant curator and took over meteorites. Before Henderson, Merrill was in charge and he did not seem to have the interest in meteorites that his predecessor did Merrill seemed more interested in seeing a meteorite was classified, published and that the U.S. Museum had a specimen. After those actions were taken it didn't really matter to him anymore. University professors fought over stones from the Iowa falls (1875 and 1890), without competition from the national museum. And before 1932, several other large US meteorites where lost to museums overseas, such as the Mt. Joy meteorite, because of lack of interest in this nation. I am not sure when Henderson retired, but I wonder how well it would line up with the Smithsonian's lost of territorial actions regarding meteorites. I will note that Henderson and Nininger were able to form a relationship that helped each other out. At one time Henderson even organized a pricing structure, and got all the large meteorite collectors to agree on. This paid bottom dollar for finds from finders. So I would not say Henderson was totally territorial. Perhaps, just controlling. A nice Smithsonian Magazine article that has a lot of Henderson history and quotes can be found here: http://www.smithsonianmag.si.edu/smithsonian/issues95/may95/mall_may95.html Clear Skies, Mark Bostick www.meteoritearticles.com __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Mike, If you got a shippment of meteorites from the Amgala strewnfield , would you bother to have it classified or just sell it as Amgala ? Regardless of who had the initial sample classified. Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite numbers...a different viewpoint
This current problem will fix itself when the supplies of African and Oman meteorites dry up. Then we'll all be back to not-so-patiently waiting for new falls that never fall and hunting for individual stones and small strewnfields with always too few specimens. There will come a day when meteorite collectors will look back at the NWA era and refer to it as the proverbial good old days. Fifty years from now, they will read the NWA stories and see the pictures of the thousands of meteorites, and they will be in awe. And, when that time arrives, some of the people who regularly write to this list will be considered icons and revered historical figures; not too different than how we revere Nininger and his contemporaries today. Collectors will whisper the names of Killgore, Farmer, Haag, Thompson, Carion, Hupe, Ward, Reed, New and many, many others. They will covet their autographed books and brag about owning labels and meteorites from their collections. Some of you guys might just become legends. So, be careful what you write and say because you are becoming a part of tomorrows history. I want my grand kids to think of you guys as heroes, so don't make me disappoint them someday when I have to tell them I knew some of you before you became gentlemen. I really don't know. Amgala like I said in a previous email, is a fall, and like Bensour or Allende, deserves different treatment from NWA #s. Still, it is a tough call. I can say as a dealer and with some experience since I announced Amgala, I could identify it, but I cant reccomend that everyone who has owned a meteorite do it. The Hupes and many other people have the right to those numbers. Now, there are other numbers being widely used without proper title (as Dr Grossman has stated publicly and with finality that people do not own numbers, but numbers are assigned to specific meteorite specimens and must not be used with other meteorites just because you heard or someone told you it is the same). Let's all please stop this practice as it is really hurting our business and hobby. Virtually every dealer including myself has been or is guilty of this, we are in the process of correcting the situation and to start people MUST immediately comply or this will just spiral downward as we see tonight. I perused eBay today and it is still rampant with sellers using numbers they seem to have drawn from a hat. So
Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite numbers
Bob, It is very simple, send a type specimen to NAU or any other NomCom authorized laboratory and I will recognize your material when the NomCom assigns it an official NWA number. Using the numbers NWA 1110 and NWA 1877 will never be acceptable because the material has already been voted on. It is a simple matter, send in a type specimen and all the fragments. The fragments will be visually compared to the type specimen by a competent scientist. If a qualified scientist argues to the NomCom they are all the same and the NomCom votes that this is ok they will all be assigned an official number. Every fragment in the NWA 1110 batch was looked at by Dr. Irving, submitted to the NomCom and a number was assigned to cover the 118 grams of fragments, not a gram more. I am not authorized to compare material and make official judgements and neither is Mike. All we can do is offer an opinion. In the case of a fall the NomCom rules are different. Here is link to explain how you can make your unclassified and un-numbered material official: http://jan.ucc.nau.edu/~glg100-p/Meteorite.html If you are too lazy to follow through that will become your problem. There is no excuse for number piggy-backing and it is against NomCom rules. If you do not respect them you have no right to call your material anything other than unclassified. Re: [meteorite-list] precedent
Adam, I'll send you my address gladly off list. I'm very interested. Bill Kieskowski -- Original message -- From: Adam Hupe [EMAIL PROTECTED] Bill, What is your address so that my attorney, the same one I have had on retainer for nearly two decades, can send you an official statement in regards to the position we have taken. I was planning on posting this to a web site but it has become clear that you want to become involved ahead of time. I will authorize this Monday. After you receive the statement I would like you to call him and then tell the List what is being done. I will forward the emails you have been posting publicly so he knows what kind of a person he is dealing with. I can't understand the likes of you or Bob Evans and if there is a way I can help take out the trash, I will. My attorney is fully aware of the dilemmas we are faced with. Now your name will be brought into the mix. You have earned this position.
