[meteorite-list] Meteorite Magazine Contest

2004-11-27 Thread almitt
Hi List,

I suggested a contest about a week back to see who could get the most
Meteorite Magazine subscriptions and I am offering either a Richfield,
Kansas 19.8 gram Meteorite part slice or if you prefer a 10 gram Park
Forest part slice. I can provide photos but need someone to host.

Rules. Simply supply me or the Magazine with the number of subscriptions
you have been able to generate. They must receive the subscription
before the end of the year for it to count. We'll verify those with the
highest count and the winner is entitled to his/her choice of the
meteorites above. If someone wants to up the anti and donate another
specimen we can accept that but will leave it to the people out there.

We're just going by the honor system here but will need your list to
verify how many people you have convinced to subscribe or you can
provide subscriptions for people, museums, schools and so forth. Such
subscriptions must be sent in by personal check or business check to
count.

Any suggestions (in case I have overlooked something) would be
appreciated. I hope we can generate over a hundred subscriptions but
several hundred would be better! All my best!

Disclaimer, I am not associated with the Magazine (would it matter?)
other than an occasional author.

Aziz,

Do you guys have a big magnet under your country that allows you to get all
these falls? :)

Amazing to have several falls in recent years in one small area like this.
Wonder why...lack of forest and hills that allows falls to be seen so easy???

Thanks for the update.

John

[meteorite-list] NWA recent falls

2004-11-27 Thread Nelson
Dear List, Probably one big difference is the lack of night lighting there!
The desert at night even around small cities is awesome dark sky! Lot of
people hoping to get a meteorite too! It's like a lottery find! So many of
us sit in the house in front of the boobtube, how can you hope to see a
meteorite, let alone find it. However, a lot of cell phones to triangulate
and bingo, more falls, finds! Also less vegetation to look through. It all
adds up!! Thanks Nels

[meteorite-list] meteorite magazine contest

2004-11-27 Thread Steve Arnold, Chicago!!!
Hello list.I think what al is doing about a contest is great. It will
really help to generate revenue for joel and possibly make new meteorite
collecters.Well after thinking about it,I have decided to cut up my 88
gram slice of HAH 237.I will donate a 1 gram slice to the cause.I will be
getting it cut into 10 slices, where I'll probably sell at a later date.I
think being able to help out our cause is a great to further our great
hobby.I hope we can get alot of new collecters, and possibly new dealers.

Re: [meteorite-list] bengrir fall

2004-11-27 Thread Greg Hupe
Hello Habibi,
Thank you for the photos of the new fall. The next step is to get GPS
coordinates, witness statements, location of fall (nearest village, town or
city). I do not think the military will mind you gathering this data as we
(our Moroccan partners) ran into the same scenario with Amgala. Of course
buying the material from them directly did not hurt. However this case may
be, we encourage you to collect this data NOW before any witnesses "forget"
what they heard, saw, smelled or felt. You are in the forefront on this one,
go get the data and submit it to the lab that will analyze your type sample
(or whoever submits it first).

Being that the reported fall was near or in Marrakech, finding a GPS should
not be a problem. In fact, Mike Farmer arrived in Morocco today so perhaps
you can join up with him again, call his guide. I suspect he has a GPS with
him. I think he may be chasing down that other iron meteorite that fell this
month in the Atlas Mountains. Amazing that all of these falls are there.

Were there any small complete stones recovered yet? If not, just another
reason to talk to the eye witnesses and then you should be able to figure
out which direction it traveled and find the smaller complete stones. Put me
down for a couscous-bag full of complete oriented ones ;-)

Best of luck,
Greg

[meteorite-list] Bengrir and Aziz

2004-11-27 Thread bernd . pauli
Aside from all this hustle about Bengrir, his first name is Aziz,
the family name is Habibi. Although I do not speak Arabic, I do
know what his first name and his family name mean but, of course,
it is not up to me to disclose such information.

Anyway, looking forward to hearing about Bengrir's classification
and glad to see that the recent stormy weather on this list has
finally abated and list members talk meteorites again instead of
slinging mud at each other.

Cheers and good night,
it is 00:45 here, ... yawn,

Re: [meteorite-list] bengrir fall

2004-11-27 Thread Pekka Savolainen

In Finland we have had many potntial bolides in a few last year.
I´m also quite sure, something has also landed, but the difficulty
is to find them until they drop trough your roof.
Lots of lakes and woods and snow in winters here makes the
recovery very difficult. Light pollution in the cities makes difficult
to catch the bolides by sky-cameras etc...
But we still are looking up to the stars, no doubt ;-

Well, it's light pollution what makes the difference. And nobody is
looking up
to the stars here anymore...

[meteorite-list] AD: Dr. Elbert King Allende Kits, Shocked Belemnites, eBay Auctions....

2004-11-27 Thread MARK BOSTICK
Hello List,
Spotlight for this ad posting is a few Dr. Elbert King Allende kits I have
made. Only five more available.

http://www.meteoritearticles.com/allendeking.html
Each kit comes with Dr. Elbert King's book "Moon Trip" (unread-like new), an
8x10 showing King with some Texas meteorites, letters from Monnig to King,
other letters to/from King, PLUS a CD-ROM containing 18 newspaper articles
on Elbert King and NASA Photo S64-21413 (E. King on geological friend trip
with astronauts to Big Bend Area, Texas 1964-04-17).

All the specimens come in a plastic case which was numbered by Elbert King
as shown. Condition of cases very, and they look better in my photographs,
then in real life.

I have also added onto my website some neat belemnite fossils. These fossil
were found near the town of Donauworth in the south eastern rim region of
the Ries Crater Astrobleme. About 14.7 million years ago a large meteorite
crashed in the Earth's surface at Nordlingen Ries, Germany. This impact
melted, shattered, pulverized and altered rocks for many miles. This
belemnite fossil was recovered from Jurassic limestone and has been deformed
leaving it witness to the comic impact. Shock waves from the large comet or
meteorite impact went through local rock beds, and the fossils inside them,
leaving everything slices like loafs of bread. The "slices shifted slightly
and with time formed back together. At one time it was thought these fossils
were evidence of a large volcanic eruption.

I acquired a lot of close to 100 of these shocked Belemnites. The ones
listed are the best from the lot. Average specimen found is about 1/2 the
size, and 1/2 as skinny as these. $12.99 each,
http://www.meteoritearticles.com/riesbelemnites.html

My Canyon Diablo sale page has been updated. Most are sized 60g-150g, which
makes them perfect Christmas gift giving size. I will offer at 30% discount
on the CD's for the next two weeks upon request, with Christmas in mind.
http://www.meteoritearticles.com/canyondiablos.html

The first pieces of Wichita have went on sale this last week and last two
being offering right now are on ebaythe largest of all ends today. This
meteorite is very special to us, (the Kansas Meteorite Society), and
therefore NO slices will be cut for resale. We did cut a couple slices off
for university trades this last month, and the six cutting fragments it
created I was voted the ability to sell. That is not to say we will not cut
any more of Wichita but we would only do such for Kansas meteorites, and we
have over 90 different recognized finds and falls (plus a couple yet to be
recognized from the King collection) Two of the six offered pieces can be
found on eBay, including the largest at 0.208g. Wichita is an H5 so it is
not a rare classification, but considering slightly less then 1/2 a gram has
been released, type collectors might want to take notice.

Also, be sure to check out my ebay auctions. I have been running about 800
auctions a week, with about 300 of them being meteorite and have about 50
meteorite auctions I plan to list the new today days. Copy and paste the
following or search ebay seller: meteoritesandmore

Clear Skies,
Mark Bostick
