[meteorite-list] Park Forest

2004-12-01 Thread joseph_town
Hi again Bob and list,

A few other things that are interesting about this piece are that it was found
in the guys truck and he had a way to slice it. The quality of the cut looks
pretty fair so someone used a decent saw to cut it. There's a rock shop in
Harvey near Riverdale that could have cut it. I wonder where his truck was
parked, if the story is true. I have a 40g individual found in a parking lot in
Chicago Heights. 26th and Chicago Road. I Spent 8 days looking for more in that
area and didn't find a crumb so I figured it must have fallen off a vehicle. I
live a few miles from Riverdale so I'll try to get together with this seller.
No earth shaking news but an interesting story might come of it.

Best Regards,

Bill

I assume you want the ones with the letters N, S, E, W, T, B
on them. However, our own NahklaDog has some w/o compass
directions on them up on eBay right now:

With some self-sticking stencil letters, you could make your own

Hi Bob,

That's an interesting slice. Ridiculous price of course. I don't have any PF
with chondrules like that and it's a really well taken picture for a seller
with feedback of only 3. What do you think?

Hello Again Folks,

Well, despite our differences in the past, Bob Evans has generously offered to
host a couple photos of the specimen in his Yahoo photo album. You can take a
look at them through the following link:

http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/spacerox2001/album?.dir=/f874

Last and final price: $216.66 via Paypal to this email address takes it! But
then again, that's only $125 less than what I paid for it last year : /
Consider it an early holiday gift from me to you.

Best Regards,

[meteorite-list] Deep Impact Update - December 1, 2004

2004-12-01 Thread Ron Baalke

George H. Diller
Kennedy Space Center, Fla.
(321) 867-2468

RELEASE: ELV-120104

EXPENDABLE LAUNCH VEHICLES STATUS REPORT
December 1, 2004

MISSION: Deep Impact
 LAUNCH VEHICLE: Delta II 7925
LAUNCH PAD: Pad 17-B Cape Canaveral Air Force Station
 LAUNCH DATE: Jan. 8, 2005
LAUNCH WINDOW: 1:39:50 and 2:19:12 p.m. EST instantaneous

The NASA Launch Services Program conducted the Launch Vehicle
Readiness Review on Nov. 30. At the conclusion, Jan. 8 was
firmly established as the launch date for Deep Impact and
this date has been set on the Eastern Range.

In processing activities at the Astrotech Space Operations
facility located near Kennedy Space Center, the Deep Impact
solar array panels will undergo an illumination test as a
final check of performance on Dec. 8. The high-gain antenna
used for spacecraft communications will be installed on
Dec. 9 and the flight battery will be installed on Dec. 10.
Deep Impact will then be ready to begin preparations for
fueling, which is scheduled to start on Dec. 16 and be
completed on Dec. 19. Mating to the payload attach fitting
and upper stage booster occurs Dec. 22 - 23.

The spacecraft is currently scheduled to be transported to
Pad 17-B on Dec. 28 and mated to the Boeing Delta II rocket.
The Flight Program Verification, the major integrated test
with the Delta II, occurs on Dec. 30. The Delta II payload
fairing will be installed around the Deep Impact
spacecraft on Jan. 4.

NASA's Deep Impact spacecraft arrived in Florida on Oct. 23
to begin final preparations for launch. The spacecraft was
shipped from Ball Aerospace & Technologies in Boulder, Colo.,
to Astrotech.

The stacking of the Boeing Delta II launch vehicle on Pad
17-B began on Nov. 22 with the hoisting of the first stage
into the launcher. Hoisting of the nine strap-on solid
rocket boosters, in sets of three, began with the first set
on Nov. 23 and the second on Nov 29. The last set is being
installed on the vehicle today. The second stage will be
hoisted into position atop the first stage on Friday, Dec. 3.
The payload fairing will be hoisted and stowed in the
mobile service tower on Dec. 6.

[meteorite-list] Bogande [L] - new old fall from Burkina Faso ????

2004-12-01 Thread Meteoryt.net
Hello
Becouse Martin make a fallstart and send info too early I want write a few
words about this possible new fall.

Bogande village, around 120km from Bilanga. Fall from 03.2003, TKW=17kg
I waiting for confirmation if its really from 2003 year, becouse its strange
why I not hear about this before. Other problem is that this looks too fresh
to be found after 1.5year. This specimens must be recovered soon after fall.
Unfortunatelly my friend do not speak in english verry good so this can take
some time :)

On monday I received with next Gao shipment, two specimen of possible new
fall. Specimens looks verry fresh but with some rust around iron grains.

Crust is black with places where is more glossy than in other. That mix
glossy Bensour + mat Amgala. Specimens are verry unequal so they for sure
come from exploded bolide that make strew field. They are sumilar to some
Thuathe meteorites in shape. Ofcourse I have only 2 specimens so there for
sure will be many different shapes, like in Thuathe fall.

I cut only one specimen.
Inside its white chondrite L5 or L4 becouse there is some good visible
chondrules. But most interesting thing what surprize me was that big black
inclusion looks like I.M.B. fragment. Center of this black inclusion I have
on 2mm thin full slice so this will come for Thin Section on monday and then
I can tell something more precise about what type of chondrite it is.

Something similar (black inclusions) can be found on another new fall from
Burkina named Lampiayrie (provinsional), but for sure this 2 meteorites are
verry different and cant be paired. About this another fall maybe Mike have
any new informations, becouse he classify this material.

Thats all what I know now.
Some nice photos You can see here.

2004-12-01 Thread Martin Altmann
Bonjour Aziz.

Hey it's exactely looking like Marcins Lampiayrie and Bogande, the new
Burkina Faso falls. (Also not yet classified).
Check ir out there: http://www.polandmet.com/

Look - brecciated, lightish grey matrix, small troilites, dark grey larger
clasts.
I guess a brecciated L.
Are there little rust spots on that new fall on the broken sides or does it
seems only so?

Do we have a meteor stream producing such brecc L or LL-stuff in the last
years? Bensour, Park Forest, Bogande, Lampyahoodelie, this now... or what?

Just back from Romania, all new falls tend to fall, when I'm there(so
buy from my stuff for my next ticket!!)..
where I visited Andrei Razvan too: the one and only collector from whole
large Romania -

Andrei - YOU ARE GREAT !!

http://www.coshoctontribune.com/news/stories/20041201/localnews/1678211.html
A local star gazer finds a fallen star
By Jim Konkoly
Coshocton Tribune (Ohio)
December 1, 2004
COSHOCTON -- For the second time in her life, a falling star has come
within a few yards of Phyllis Rice.
"My heavens," she said last week when Coshocton High School science
teacher Dan Zielinski examined the unusual rock she had found lodged in
the screen of her patio door.
Zielinski confirmed what Rice suspected.
During the last meteor shower on the nights of Nov. 15 and 16, a small
falling star hit the home of Phyllis and her husband Larry Rice at 1921
Adams Street.
About a half inch in diameter, black on one side and a rusty, burnt
orange color on the other, this rock has all the characteristics of a
meteorite, said Zielinski, who teaches astronomy and other sciences at
the high school and directs the planetarium at Central Elementary School.
"I'm not the expert on meteorites," he added. "But I can say it's highly
likely that this is a meteorite, a falling star, based on the texture
and the color, and the angle of impact on the screen."
For many years, Phyllis has enjoyed watching meteor showers, a hobby she
began when daughters Lori and Sharon were growing up.
"We'd take sleeping bags and lay them down on the deck so we could keep
watch on the sky," she said.
While she's seen many shooting stars streak across the night sky over
the years, Phyllis didn't see the one that fell on her house.
On the last night of the recent meteor shower, she checked the night sky
occasionally up until midnight and then gave up when she hadn't seen any
celestial activity. The next morning she discovered the unusual rock
stuck in her screen door.
Phyllis thinks the remnant of a shooting star would make a great object
for one of her younger grandchildren to take to school for show and tell.
For sure, it brought back a happy childhood memory for her.
"When I was small, about 10 or 11, my mother and I were walking on North
Eighth Street, and we saw a shooting star fall to the ground right in
front of us," she said.
Meteors are not rare, Zielinski said.
"(On average), a shooting star occurs every eight seconds somewhere in
the world," he said. But finding a meteorite is far from a common
occurrence.
"When I first saw it," Phyllis recalled, "I said, 'What in the world is
this?'"
Based on Zielinski's expertise, she learned that, almost certainly, it
came from out of this world.

[meteorite-list] Shapeless goo

2004-12-01 Thread Rob Wesel
Hi Marc-
I wondered the same thing and presented the piece to Dr Alex Ruzicka at
Cascadia Meteorite Laboratory. It is referred to as "dark inclusion" not an
adjective but a scientific term. Very little study has been done on them and
Cascadia was eager to get some samples from it which I provided. I have a
customer in Japan that showed some of his pieces to some scientists and they
bought all the rest that I have. One theory is that is was wet sediment the
rock sat in on the parent body, dried mud in the matrix as dark inclusions
are predominantly in the periphery filling voids and cracks. NWA 3118 is
high in TKW, hopefully more dark inclusions will be found.

Hi Bill and List,

No offense taken. I am going on expedition with other List members Friday
to a different desert and will not return until the 11th. I may then book
another expedition to a different area depending on lab results of some
samples being studied. I have been way to busy lately to worry about a new
fall in Morocco. Over 60 kilos has been reported meaning there will be
plenty to go around so we are going to exercise patience on this one. We
are only interested in the Main Mass if it becomes available and will pay up
to $2.00 a gram for it if somebody is willing to locate and sell it. Until
then, we will turn away any unsolicited shipment of this new material.

[meteorite-list] AD: Rarities for sale

2004-12-01 Thread Herbert Raab

Dear fellow collectors,

I am giving away four slices of rare meteorites. Two
of these hit metal boxes of different kinds, one hit
the Antarcitc ice shield, and one hit the Earth more
than 250 years ago.

If you want to take a look at the 7.3g crusted slice of
CLAXTON (the one that hit a Mailbox almost exactly 10
years ago), the 8.0g crusted slice of PEEKSKILL (the one
that hit a car in 1991), the 20.1g slice of the Antarctic
chondrite MT.BALDR (also shows fresh fusion crust!) and
the thin 5.6g crusted slice of TABOR (fell in 1753!) I
offer, please use the following links:

 http://web.utanet.at/raab/Claxton.jpg
 http://web.utanet.at/raab/Peekskill.jpg
 http://web.utanet.at/raab/MtBaldr.jpg
 http://web.utanet.at/raab/Tabor.jpg

Anyony interested in buying one of these slices, please
send me your proposal privately. I would also consider
to trade these pieces for complete individuals from
classic locations.

Anyone not interested: I hop you liked the images...
:-)

Best greetings,

well , do not forget that also to hunt in a place where the police is

i do not like to put my self in that situation even for a moon rock.

did you get some others photo greg from the same fall would you be kind and
share them with the list now. because i do not think that anyone can show
any photo except philipe who has some of the new fall and it's the only one
who has some and nelson.
so if you have other photo of this fall this is briant and you have to show
them to the list now.

Hello Philippe,
Thank you for the data you have collected, this is how it should be done.
It is odd how it takes someone from outside of Morocco to have to collect
and present this information to us when it could have been done so easily
by a local.

Aside from the "...iron and some nickel...", what type of meteorite do you
think it is? I am hearing a couple things but have not seen much other than
Habibi's photos and some others from Morocco.

Thanks again for the updates, we appreciate it,
Greg

Subject: [meteorite-list] Meteorite fall in Morocco

Hello everybody,
I'm actually in Morroco looking for informations about the new fall. Here
are my observations :

There as been an article published in "Liberation" (Morocco) on november
29. I will scan it when I
come back to France. This is the report of a declaration made on the first
morrocan TV Channel
TVM on saturday night. Mrs Hasne Chennaoui Oudjane (Aïn Chok University of
Casablanca) told
that the analysis done on the meteorites felt near Ben Guerir reveal that
they contain some iron
and some nickel and that they come from an environment located between Mars
and Jupiter.
During this report, they have shown a meteorite weighing about 4kg.

We arrived in Ben Guerir this morning (Nov 30) at 9.00. It's raining.
We took the direction of a little village distant of 20 km, Douar Tnaja.
There, two witnesses of the
fall show us the place where a stone weighing around 10kg felt. The
coordinates of this place are
N 32° 15' " W 8° 07'.
A 10mx10m area has been plowed and the crater is no more visible. It's very
probable that a
meteorite of this weight dig a deep "hole" in this kind of ground, the soil
there is light and dry.
The first rain after the fall was on November 29.
The two witnesses have seen a fireball coming from the North-North East and
have heard a big
explosion which has terrified them.
After feeling reassured, the two shepherds went back to the impact area.
One hour later, the
responsible of the village came and call the royal police force. As soon as
they arrived, they have
requisitioned the piece.

The royal police force has visited each house of the area, asking people to
give them the
meteorites. Some people have complied with this order but some others have
hidden the
meteorites.
An inhabitant has showed me a meteorite weighing around 1kg. The only
problem is that he
hides it in his well to be sure that the police won't find it. Dived in the
water since a week, this
meteorite presents already some weathering signs.

I have made some photos I will upload on my website as soon as I come back
to France.
Tomorrow (Dec,1st), I will go to another place where another big piece has
been found.
I'll let you know.

All the best,
Philippe Thomas

[meteorite-list] Meteorite Found in Ohio?

2004-12-01 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.coshoctontribune.com/news/stories/20041201/localnews/1678211.html

I have been married twice, the first, a red head, the second, a blonde.
Funny thing, I always liked brunettes! I have been divorced from my second
wife for over a year now and have not been on a date once, I am forty years
old and not as good looking as I was when I was younger! : ( But, anyways,
I love having a woman in my life, there are things about women I really
enjoy!!!
A few months ago, I met a twenty-eight year old brunette that was a real
looker (no, not a real hooker) and she liked me. She was perfect!!! It is
2004 so we exchanged email addresses. I look for more than good looks in a
women, both of my ex's are quite intelligent, I like that in a woman! Well,
after just a few emails, I knew I did not want to date her, she came across
as a real dumb S_ _ _ !!! She did not know to put two spaces between
sentences (the big bar at bottom center of the key board) and did not use
proper grammar. She was probably not dumb, but reading her emails sure gave
you that impression!

Pretty ambiguous wording here Steve. Please explain what "Take any two you
want, just pay one price" means from your point of view. Also, please send
or post pictures of your sale items, I like to be able to see what it is
I'm buying before I commit.

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite fall in Morocco

2004-12-01 Thread Greg Hupe
Hello Philippe,
Thank you for the data you have collected, this is how it should be done. It
is odd how it takes someone from outside of Morocco to have to collect and
present this information to us when it could have been done so easily by a
local.

There as been an article published in "Liberation" (Morocco) on november 29.

One
hour later, the
responsible of the village came and call the royal police force. As soon as
they arrived, they have
requisitioned the piece.
