[meteorite-list] Mud Dry Lake old find

2005-02-19 Thread Paul Gessler
Hegh Bob, I was wondering if you recovered any fragments from this bolide on
Mud Dry lake?

It fell to earth on November 9th, 1962.
Also how close is the impact from your find? venture a guess...you can make
out a-lot in the background...mountains, long shadows and profile topography
etc. Look at those (rocks?) in the trough on the right.

Cheers: Paul Gessler
PS-Rob M. can't wait for volume II on Lucerne valley, they are getting much
bigger on that side.

Hi Rob,
We got hit with rain on Saturday - I hope things worked out for your
trip though. Would love to hear a trip report. Congrats again on your
6.8 g find the other day! I hope I'll be able to get out soon in a few

[meteorite-list] Sikhote-Alin shrapnel prices?

2005-02-19 Thread Darren Garrison
I'm wondering what a would be concidered a good price on small pieces of
Sikhote-Alin shrapnel. A
seller had a 1160 gram lot of 74 pieces listed with a BIN of 24 cents and a
shipping price of $50.
I think maybe the 24 cent BIN was a mistake, but it looks like he was gouging
quite a bit on the
shipping (even with it coming from Finland) and I wanted to do the BIN before
someone else did (as
surely someone would). So is $50.24 a good price for this lot, or should I
tell the seller that
he's "off the hook" (assuming that it was an accident). Or would the ethical
thing to do to be to
let him "off the hook" good deal or not?

Here's the lot:

Re: [meteorite-list] baggoriyya is really Baygorria

2005-02-19 Thread JKGwilliam
I've changed the "Subject" line to include the real name of the real
meteorite. With the correct name in the subject line, these posts will now
show up when doing an Internet search for the real name. This isn't
implying that the irons the Giroldi brothers are marketing are really
paired with the Baygorria iron.

I wish I had one of the Giroldi Bros. posters. Did anyone buy one?

At least the financial damage for the collectors won't be not very large,

Re: [meteorite-list] stability in baggoriyya

2005-02-19 Thread Michael L Blood
Mike, Chicago Steve, et al,
ET has the only REAL Bagoria. If you doubt it, contact him. He is
ticked as hell that the market was ruined by fakes of Campos. If
you see real Bagorria, you can see the difference.
I have never known Ivan to be consciously deceitful, but if he
was given erroneous information.
There IS a real Bagorria - I can post a photo if people like.

Re: [meteorite-list] stability in baggoriyya

2005-02-19 Thread Bob Evans
If you check Finmets auction. He does disclose the following:
"This meteorite turned up on famous Tucson mineral Show 2005. Because of its
great similarity to Campo del Cielo, some people doubt it to be from
Uruguay. "

"One of the stories tells about difficulties to bring Campo legally from
Argentina straight to USA. So they have been shipped the short way to
Uruguay where the story of a new strewnfield was created. Truth or not?"

So apparently Finmet isnt trying to be deceitful. Why hes using the
Baygorria name I have no idea.

Don't be fooled on this eBay scam, some prominent sellers seem to have

[meteorite-list] Vincent Jacques

2005-02-19 Thread Michael Farmer
I am writing the list about Vincent Jacques from Belgium. He is a thief. I
sold him a piece of Saratov for several hundred dollars over one and a half
year ago! He never sent payment, wrote me several times that his payments
kept being returned to him, but never showed me a scan of the returned
envelopes. He kept getting angry, telling me he would pay me and that he
worked for a museum and would never steal.
Yet, one and a half year later, the meteorite is still in Belgium, sitting
in a museum, and I have no payment. He refuses to answer emails any more, so
I am finally tired of waiting for my payment.
I am sad that a European collector who put my meteorite in a museum has
refused to pay for it.
Anyone dealing with him, please send him my regards, and there is no longer
a need to pay for the meteorite, I consider it stolen and will contact the
museum myself to demand it be returned.

[meteorite-list] Do all meteorites have nickel?

2005-02-19 Thread bernd . pauli
Tom asked:

Hello Tom and List,

This is an interesting question that I would like to pass on to the whole List.
I personally think that Ni would always have a definite peak in a spectrum
of elements, that its peak would always be at a definite wavelength, but I am
not quite sure.

Any comments?

Best wishes,

Hey List, I looked in the books and can't figure out what this is, will you
please take a look and see if it could be a meteorite? It has an ever so
slight tug on a magnet and looks real cool. Crust, I am not sure, very
weathered rock, the out side looks rusted?

[meteorite-list] Mars rover doesn't find new meteorite

2005-02-19 Thread Darren Garrison
http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/mars_meteor_050219.html

Mars Rovers Solve One Mystery, Find Another
By Tariq Malik
Staff Writer
posted: 19 February 2005
09:03 am ET

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- A rock that careened through the Martian sky and bounced to
a stop on the red
planetâs surface is most definitely not an alien meteorite, the principal
investigator of NASAâs
Mars rover mission said Friday.

The rock, dubbed "Russet" after a type of potato, is apparently a chunk of Mars
ejected in the past
from a crater impact, said Steven Squyres, science team leader for NASAâs
rovers Spirit and
Opportunity currently

Opportunity came upon Russet on the plains of Meridiani Planum while driving
towards its current
destination Vostok. A small crater nearby hinted that Russet fell from the sky,
but whether it was
truly alien to Mars - like Opportunityâs recent meteorite find Heat Shield
Rock â or simply crater
ejecta was unknown.

"The [Opportunity] rover found that this was sulfate-rich, and not a
meteorite," Squyres told an
audience of scientists and reporters here during a plenary lecture at the 2005
meeting of the
American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). "So that
mysteryâs solved."

But Russetâs homely nature does not quell all of the current questions posed
by the two Mars rovers.

An accidental discovery by Spirit has Mars researchers scratching their heads
over an odd patch of
soil full of sulfur-rich salts, or sulfates. The rover made the find by chance,
when a wheel churned
up the bright sulfate material during a failed attempt to climb a Columbia Hill
slope at Gusev
Crater.

"This is a completely serendipitous discovery, a complete surprise," Squyres
said during a press
briefing earlier Friday. "This is a very rich concentration of salts, and
weâll learn more about
what it means in the next few days."

Squyres said that one possible explanation could be that past water may have
percolated up to the
surface, bringing up minerals along for the ride, then evaporated, leaving
behind a salty crust. But
additional measurements using the multiple science instruments attached to
Spiritâs robot arm should
yield a better picture, he added.

A tiring task

This week, the Mars rover mission passed the 400-day mark, a far cry from its
original three-month
plan, and the human strain is showing, Squyres said.

"The whole team is deeply fatigued," he said, adding that his best hope at the
missionâs outset was
a 180-day run on Mars. "These vehicles were designed for 90 days of operations."

Despite that nominal mission, Squyres had hoped that Spirit and Opportunity
would last 180 sols, or
Martian days. But with two mission extensions behind them, rover scientists
have streamlined how
they control Spirit and Opportunity, and now work on a more manageable time
schedule that straddles
Earth and Mars time.

"Itâs very demanding, itâs excitingâitâs exhausting," Squyres said of
the extended mission. "I think
when this is over weâre all going to take a very long rest, but for now we
have a responsibility to
get every bit of science out of these vehicles."

[meteorite-list] NPA 06-25-1930 Nininger Buys the Paragould Meteorite

2005-02-19 Thread MARK BOSTICK
Paper: The Ironwood Daily Globe
City: Ironwood, Michigan
Date: Wednesday, June 25, 1930
Page: 9
SMALL COLLEGE HAS METEOR IN MUSEUM
Professor at McPherson, Pays $3,600 For World's Finest Specimen.
McPherson, Kan., June 25 - These are happy days for Professor H. N.
Nininger of the faculty of McPherson College, a school of a few hundred
students in this central Kansas prairie town.
Professor Nininger, small of stature and peer through thick glasses, is
gloating over a prize he snatched away from buyers representing the Field
Museum of Chicago. The scientist outbid the Chicago Institution and
obtained for his country college the world's finest meteorite specimen - the
largest that ever was observed falling from the skies.
The prize looks like a common rock and weighs 820 pounds. The Kansan
paid $3600 of the little college's funds for the specimen, obtaining it by
offering and even $100 more than a representative had been authorized by the
Chicago museum to offer.

Startled the Farmers
It was about 4:15 in the morning of Feb. 17 that farmers living 14
miles southwest of Paragould, Ark., were awakened by a deafening roar.
Among those who ran to doors and windows to look out were Mr. and Mrs.
Joseph H. Fletcher.
Almost dazed by three load reports, holding themselves erect only by
holding to the casing of a door as their house shook and trembled as in an
earthquake, they saw a large fiery substance strike the earth near their
home.
Clouds of clay hurled 100 yards by the impact of the object with the
earth's surface. When they hastened to the spot, they found only a hole in
the ground.
But at the bottom of that hole was what seemed to be a stone. It had
embedded itself about nine feet in the ground when it struck after falling
through space.

Was Offered $3,500
Mr. Fletcher dug out the object and hauled it to a newspaper office in
Paragould. There it was examined by hundreds of curious persons, including
Professor C.C. Wylie of the department of astronomy of the University of
Iowa. Dr. Wylie for years has specialized in the study of meteors. He
spent several days obtaining statements from person who saw the object fall.
It was then that the Field Museum in Chicago authorized an offer of
$3500 to the farmer for the meteorite. Just as that offer was about to be
accepted, however, Professor Nininger arrived from McPherson.
He, like the University of Iowa scientist, had made a life study of
meteors and meteorites.
Professor Nininger was enthusiastic about this stone. He announced it
not only the largest of its kind ever seen to fall but was of unusual
composition.
The Kansas professor did some hasty telegraphing to the management of
his college and then surprised everybody by outbidding the Chicago museum.
Within a few hours, Professor Nininger had the meteorite in an express car
en route to McPherson.

May Sell-at a Profit
Professor Nininger, proud of his college's possession, indicates enough
profit might cause surrender of the meteorite to a higher bidder.
"It is possible that we may yet dispose of it to some large
Institution," he added.

will be made this summer by Prof. H. H. Nininger, head of the biological
department of McPherson college here.
Professor Nininger will make the trip under the auspices of the

[meteorite-list] NPA 05-08-1925 Meteorites and Kansas, Nininger

2005-02-19 Thread MARK BOSTICK
Paper: The Mansfield News
City: Mansfield, Ohio
Date: Friday, May 8, 1925
NOT EVERY METEOR FEEL IT’S OBLIGED TO FALL IN KANSAS
McPHERSON, Kan., May 8. - (AP) - Kansas has attained a reputation
beyond this planet as a landing field for stray meteorites, but that
reputation would not stand the test of science, declared Prof. H. H.
Nininger of McPherson college, past president of the Kansas Academy of
Science, in an address on the subject of meteorites.
The belief that Kansas, center of the United States, exerts some
unexplained influence on the heavenly wanderers, is without foundation in
fact, the professor asserted. A chart of recorded meteorite falls discloses
that one-fifth of the significant finds in the world have been in Kansas,
and this has led, according to Professor Nininger , to the popular and
fallacious impression that this state is peculiarly attractive to
meteorites.
Two explanations he offered for the apparent monopoly Kansas has
maintained: the character of the soil, and the interest aroused in the
science.
"The finding of stony meteorites," Professor Nininger pointed out,
"which have not been seen to fall, may be considered among the rarest events
in the annals of meteoritics. In only two localities on this continent have
such finds occurred in numbers - western Kansas and the coastal plains of
Texas. In both of these regions the soil is comparatively free from
terrestrial rocks." This, he said, facilitated distinguishing meteoritic
stones from the earth.
A series of witnessed falls of the now famous and iron and stone
meteorites also had kept scientific circles, the public and the press
interested in Kansas for long periods, he said, with the result that farmers
began to believe that the heavy stones with which they were weighing down
fences and roofs were in fact meteorites. Thus were the discoveries
multiplied.
Scientists have never satisfactorily accounted for the concentration of
iron meteorites in large showers, Professor Nininger told his audience. One
theory is that such showers are remnants of disintegrating comets which have
"side-swiped" the earth. This, he said, may explain the huge crater in
northeast Arizona, devoid of volcanic rock and surrounded by traces of iron
meteoritic falls, which geologists believe marks the entrance into the earth
of a monster meteorite.

[meteorite-list] OT: cubes and their history? Contest with Prize!!!

2005-02-19 Thread drtanuki
List,
The NBS (Nationial Bureau of Standards) US maintains
the universal standard cubic centimeter as well as
all standards, metric and US standards in their very
precise, expensive and highly guarded collection.
Most likely many other countries have their own
Standards collection.
The history of the use of a cube dates at least to
4000 B.C.? or earlier in Egyptian culture...in the
form of dice? and building blocks; but was not only
unique to their culture. Early Chinese also had their
standard cube by at least 2000 B.C.
The "idea" of the cube probably came from observing
natural cubic pyrite or other minerials with a cubic
habit.
The first use of the cube associated with meteorites
perhaps was by the Japanese in Antartica. Caveat: I
may be incorrect.
Quiz: Do cubic forms exist in meteorites and in
which minerials? A prize will be rewarded for the
most correct and detailed answer. Thank you and cube
on, Dirk RossTokyo

Dear Bill, List;
It may be worth noting again, be sure that you remember that the visible
iron specks are only part of that equation as the total iron is the
number for the L or H classification, and even though that WOULD APPEAR
to be an L from a visual, if there is more elemental iron, it could be
more than an L.
Caution needs to be embraced with just visual classification
Hope this is insightful to others,

Yep, but Dirk,

the use of the letters is not so important, if da cube is used only for size
comparig purpose,
as the directions in the strewnfield at home are of minor importance.
It might be a nice exercise for a geometrician, given the proper orientation
of the cube and the season, to estimate from the length of the shadows, at
which hour of the day the picture was made, but I confess, that whenever I
put my specimens onto the sill to take pictures, I never used a compass.
Let's check my actual auctions...well, at the Sao Juliao the S points not to
South, it's more SSE. Kunya-Urgench: W must be turned clockwise for about
60°. Moon - wow, seems to be quite correct +/- 10°.

Everybody is giving the information of the specimen's dimensions

(and some allude the cube being 1cm x 1cm x 1cm).

One never should underestimate peoples intellectual skills

objects, which strongly vary in size. (My tomcat was twice as large as my
cat).

Note another point: All this cubes with letters were made by Scherff, hence
cognizable and standardized. Imagine, Mr.Buckleboo with his devilish mind,
would craft a cube with a length of the edges of only 7mm, to gave a wrong
impression of the true size of the meteorite...

"planetary" - words have meanings, sometimes the meaning is shortened or
transformed by the use of that word.
That's the reason, why we often have to laugh so much, if we hear a
politician, a manager or a lawyer speakin' or if we're reading a computer
manual or a writ from the authorities.
"planetary" is a sloppy word for stony meteorites from differentiated (thus
probably larger mother (?) bodies). Of course it's not concise, as f.e. all
the irons are also a product of differentiaton and we don't have to start
the somewhat academic discussion from when on a celestial body which
revolves around the sun should be called a planet, planetoid, asteroid,
kuiperbeltobject ect.
And of course you could take your stand, that "Nonplanetary hits planetary"
correctly describes the fall of the Park Forest Curb Smasher, as Park Forest
is an ordinary chondrite, thus not planetary, but the curb is made from
terrestial rock and our Earth is a planet.
Da point is: It's important, that most people do understand, what
"planetary" if attributed to a meteorite means.

My 2 buckleboos.

[meteorite-list] Thank you for your input!

2005-02-19 Thread Bill Southern
Hello All,
Thank you for your input about my new chondrite and it seems you all agree
for the most part giving me a good idea of what I might have. There was a
request for a photo of some with the crust intact so I have added a photo of
a 470 gram and a 122 gram piece for you to look at. The larger was the first
find...

Thanks again for taking the time to give your opinions and I will post the
classification information when it is given to me by Lora at ASU.

I think L5 or L6 is a good guess but the weathering grade is
probably closer to W3 (at least in this cut specimen).

Congrats, Bill, on your find!

Best wishes,

Bernd

[meteorite-list] Do all meteorites have nickel?

2005-02-19 Thread bernd . pauli
Hello Tom, Göran, and List,

> it isn't always this simple as we saw
> free metal in that last Lunar meteorite

Not only in the most recent lunar meteorite:

DaG 262 contains metal particles with 5-26 wt% Ni
DaG 400 has abundant metal (meteoritic provenance)
DaG 996 contains FeNi metal, etc.

The Dhofar lunar meteorites contain
FeNi metal as do the NWA lunar meteorites.

The pyrrhotite of the DaG 876 shergottite has up to 2.5 wt% Ni
and as it is possibly paired with DaG 476, 489, 670, and 735,
these should also contain a certain amount of nickel.

NWA 856 (shergottite): 77 ppm Ni

The HEDs have nickel too (the metal of the Binda
howardite, for example has 2.0 to 3.8 % Ni).

The metal of the Hughes 007 ureilite has 1.6-4.9% Ni.
Nels Oakes' gorgeous, new lodranite NWA 2656 has 6.3% Ni.

Nickel is virtually omnipresent in meteorites!

Or, ... to sum it up with O.R. Norton's words: " ... so that for all
but a very few stony achondrites, the presence of nickel is an
important diagnostic characteristic that, if shown to be present,
almost certainly identifies the specimen as a meteorite."

NORTON O. R. (2002) The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Meteorites,
Appendix E - Testing a meteorite for nickel, p. 319.

Best wishes,

Bernd

[meteorite-list] Ad - Please Ignore!!!! Way off topic!!!! Statingthe OBVIOUS!?? - About Cubes

2005-02-19 Thread Robert Verish
To those who come across this post via a Google search
--
Now that we've gone full circle on this "subject",
which is neither an "Ad" nor is "Way off topic!!",
just wanted to add some background history about these
centimeter cubes used for scale and orientation.

To the best of my memory the first time I saw a cube
scale used by a meteorite dealer was by Eric Twelker.
I believe they were made out of wood and were without
markings. I thought it was a great idea. He would
have many pieces of a meteorite he was selling, all in
various sizes, but in the images they would all look
the same size regardless of their weight. The only
way to judge relative size was by looking at the
"wooden block" in the image. In each successive
image, as the "block" got smaller, you knew the
specimens were getting larger.

To the best of my memory the first time a cube with
"NASA markings" was used with a meteorite specimen in
an eBay auction was by . . . . me!
And here is how that came about.

It goes back to the time that UCLA was working on the
LA Mars rock, ~1998. One of the researchers, Paul
Warren, gave me a cube scale to use in photographs of
LA 001 before it was to be cut. I recognized it as
looking just like the centimeter cubes used on the
Antarctic meteorite web pages. Paul confirmed that
the cube had been made by NASA.

This is the cube that appears in the Ron Baalke images
of LA 001 & 002. I used this same cube in all of my
in-situ images of the meteorites I found in 1999 and
2000. It is the same cube used in the Willcox Playa
002 images. It was still in my camera bag when it was
stolen out of my truck.

It turns out that this cube was irreplaceable. NASA
had made less than a handful of them and none of them
were obtainable. Hearing of my plight, a good friend
of mine (a skilled arts & crafts person) offered to
make me a replica cube. I liked it so much that I
requisitioned a dozen more to be made. These are the
cubes that were made by Moni Waiblinger-Seabridge.

I shared these cubes with my meteorite-recovery team
members. After these cubes appeared in images that I
used on eBay auctions, I got requests for them from
Rob Wesel, Matteo, and Peter Scherff. Although it was
not necessary, Peter asked permission to improve upon
the "design". And Peter has done just that. I've
been recommending Peter to everyone requesting a
flat-black marked, centimeter cube scale, ever since.

Regardless of any concensus that meteorite dealers may
reach in regards to which style of cube scales are
politically correct, I will continue to use the black
centimeter cube with the white markings for all of my
scaling purposes.

With properly scaled regards,
Bob V.

Dear Alexander, Martin, and List,
I think that the cubes are wonderful IF they are
properly used; but I see many photos with the user not
understanding the orientation for the cube. And for
many viewers outside of the US it is understood that
the dimension is 1cmX1cmX1cm; but for the common
"uneducated" ebay buyer the cube has no meaning.
Therefore by stating the dimensions in the text would
provide more clear information for most viewers.
  As for field geology,  the cubes would be useful;
but commonly the field geologist is left with using a
coin, lens cap, pen, pocket knife, rock hammer, or
something else that he/she happens to have available.
Now about Planetary material. Science is a dynamic
and hopefully progressive method to explain what is
being studied. Science cannot say with 100% certainty
that this or that meteorite came from this or that
planetary body. We can state the evidence we have
that indicates, with some degree of certainty, that
this or that rock came from wheresometimes. The
types of rocks and environments on most planetary
bodies should be highly variablelook at the
variety of rocks and minerals on the Earth for
example.
Planetary bodies are dynamic, and atmospheric gas and
rock formation processes are variable throughout the
formation and life of the planetary bodies. Impacting
meteorites from another source can "contaminate" the
surface samples that are/have been collected.
Thank you both and list members for this debate.
Sincerely, Dirk Ross...Tokyo
