[meteorite-list] The meteorite tug of war is 106 to 55 GR Looses!

2005-03-22 Thread David Freeman
Dear List;
My evening lecture on meteorites, wood, and other rocks of SW Wyoming
was a very good success but the new breed of meteorite hunters
poo-poo'ed the old guard wood hunters.
Score, February Rock Springs lecture 106 attended, March Green River
lecture tonight 55. I will be offering another lecture in June on
meteorites and meteorite hunters to help find Wyoming #14, I offered a
challenge to locate the "Green River" meteorite!
I remind myself as the lonely boy scout that is a troop of one. He
lives in isolation. Always be prepared, no stone unturned ...brave,
clean and reverent! No one there has ever heard of IMCA here except
through me. I must be the only member in Wyoming?
Very best from a snowy wet Wyoming evening,

Steve, I among many others like you, especially after meeting you, you are
one great guy!

You said: "Well I just thought it might
help me win back some people who think very lowly of me."

Steve, you can not please these people! I have lost a lot of friends one
the list that were very important to me because I posted ebay adds to many
times, I have not posted one since and I guarantee you, I am no better liked
than I was before, although the hate mail has been cut in half. : ) You
were right when you said you can not be liked by everyone! I have made some
great friends on the list, but just as many enemies, can't please everyone!
I whimped out and quit posting ebay things even though I got many private
emails urging me to continue because they appreciated them, so I understand
why you are doing what your doing, I just don't know if it will help!

Thanks, Tom

I am stumped that so many people have criticised Steve for such a
meaningless blunder. Thanks should go to the three of you for pointing out
how inappropriate these disrespectful comments are.

If anyone catches Steve (or anybody on the list for that matter) making a
mistake then post something privately. It really only makes you look bad
when you post a negative comment to the entire list.

I try not to post much unless I really think I have something to
contribute, but I have to say I'm with Thomas Webb on this one.
I sort through and delete anything I don't want to keep from this
list several times a day, so I can't do statistics on this myself. Has
anyone else tracked how many messages are posted to the list complaining
about Steve posting too much to the list? Is it 2x Steve's posts? Is it
3x? I am certainly less concerned or annoyed sorting through his posts
than
the posts from a number of others on the list, and if anything I think his
enthusiasm is refreshing, as is his tendency not to get drawn into
responding in kind to personal attacks on the list. If folks are really
interested in 'putting meaning behind the words used' in posts, Steve has
plenty of company there as well.
This is an unmoderated (is that a word?) list, as we have all
discussed many times. This is how unmoderated lists work. It makes some
sense to respond to dramatically inappropriate posts, but I honestly don't
see how Steve's qualify.

Thomas and List-
While I agree that Steve has not hurt anyone, you must see that he
brings alot of this on himself. When he 'VOWS' to not post again about
this and then almost immediately posts twice to the list, what does he
expect. He swore he would 'NEVER' sell his Haag pieces and had them on
ebay (how much more public a forum could he choose?), the next day.
If he wished to be left alone he would not demand the attention he
gets in response to his his ridiculous posts. You must believe that
Steve really doesn't care what anyone thinks as this is an established
behavior since he joined the list. If any of this mattered to him, he
would simply realize that many of us on the list actually put meaning
behind the words we use and just assume that others do as well.
But until then...

List Members,
Why not just leave the guy alone? Has he hurt anyone?
He seems to follow rule number 9 of the general list
policies by placing the word 'sale' in the subject
line. Very few others do this, and we have a lot of
repeated posts of sales going on, usually without
complaints. Most of us like to check out what is
being offered by list members but if we don't want to,
all we have to do is press that 'delete' key.

And is that debris (dust/dirt) in the carving or does that normally
occur in the glassy matrix of Moldavite? Pretty crappy if they didn't
bother cleaning it up, but I guess that would be trying to make a silk

[meteorite-list] Crater Count Led Mars Historians Astray

2005-03-22 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.newscientist.com/channel/space/mg18524925.100

Crater count led Mars historians astray
David L. Chandler
New Scientist
26 March 2005

THE method used by planetary scientists to estimate the ages of various
regions of Mars is flawed.

"This really changes things," says Nadine Barlow of Northern Arizona
University in Flagstaff. For instance, the findings will significantly
change our understanding of when Mars may have been volcanically active.

To estimate the age of any region on Mars, geologists count the number
of meteor craters they can see in images of the area. The idea is that
the older a surface, the more craters should have accumulated over time.
Crater counts give an indication of the relative age of different
Martian regions.

To determine absolute ages, these counts are then compared with crater
counts from regions of the moon, some of which have been precisely dated
thanks to the rocks brought back by the Apollo astronauts. Assuming that
the rate of meteor impacts at any given time was roughly uniform
throughout the inner solar system, those ages should translate directly
to Mars.

Now it seems there is a fatal flaw in this method, at least when it is
based on counts of very small craters. According to Barlow, recent
infrared images taken by NASA's Mars Odyssey spacecraft have
unexpectedly revealed very long ray patterns around even relatively
small craters, showing that much more material was ejected by meteor
impacts than had been calculated. Massive plumes of ejected rock would
have rained down to produce, in some cases, millions of secondary craters.

It means the vast majority of craters smaller than 2 kilometres in
diameter may be secondary craters, making them virtually useless for
dating surfaces, says Al McEwen of the University of Arizona in Tucson.
For example, McEwen studied a 10-kilometre Martian crater called Zunil.
The impact of the meteor that produced it could have created millions of
secondary craters thousands of kilometres away from the main impact.

William Bottke of the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado,
who is an expert on the dynamics of the asteroid belt, also concludes
that small craters are predominantly secondaries. He says there are just
not enough small objects in the asteroid belt to account for the
observed rates of small impacts on Mars. "Small craters may not be
telling you much," Bottke says.

Some crater-free areas on Mars have been estimated to be only about
150,000 years old. But based on the new findings, McEwen concludes that
the age of such regions can only be pinned down to within 10 million
years. And such uncertainty will remain until actual rock samples from
Mars are dated. Bottke agrees: "We probably can only set rough limits."

[meteorite-list] Re: Ad-Announcing a New German Iron Meteorite!

2005-03-22 Thread Norbert Classen
Hi John & Dawn,

Unfortunately, Matt might be right with his bombshell comment. Being from
Germany, I and my partners received several iron wrongs that revealed a
peculiar (often martensitic) etch pattern. I always felt I finally had the
real thing, but then, after an analysis in the lab, all (so far) five
samples turned out to be terrestrial, with a Ni-content of below 0,3%. Alpha
iron (usually with a martensitic structure) often reveals an etch pattern,
and that doesn't seem to mean too much. Hover, I hope that you really have
the real thing here - so don't get me wrong. I just want to share my own
experience with "German irons". My best wrong is a mass of several tons (!),
looking very much like Mundrabilla II. Man, that would have been the find of
my life, but in the end, and after three independent test in three different
labs I had to accept that it turned out to be another (big) bummer...

A nickel test would be the right thing to do, and you won't need that much
to have it performed in a qualified lab. Hope it will test positive!

All the best,
Norbert

All I said is that I have seen similar looking etches in real bomb

so you are aware of the possibilities.
I do not have a piece, personally. Maybe others do.

Greetings Frank,
For the most part, I certainly agree with your post - in that
Steve's posts are never offensive in the more repugnant manner
of those who call names, attack others, etc.
In addition, I totally agree about his unbridled enthusiasm.
HOWEVER, posting commercial ads endlessly, while annoying,
becomes particularly ironic (and chafing) after VOWING the day
before that this was the last we would hear of these particular
specimens. I repeat (like Steve) VOWING the very day before.
surely, you do find that ironic - and even worthy of some serious
ribbing for doing so.
Best wishes, Michael

[meteorite-list] Moon-Watching Mars Rover Catches Deimos Crossing the Sun

2005-03-22 Thread Ron Baalke

http://space.com/missionlaunches/050322_mars_moon.html

Moon-Watching Mars Rover Catches Deimos Crossing the Sun
By Leonard David
space.com
22 March 2005

That dynamic duo on Mars, the Spirit and Opportunity rovers, are
satellite watchers too.

Turning their respective camera systems up into the martian sky, the
robots have caught sight of the moons of Mars - Phobos and Deimos -
scooting across the face of the Sun.

"We got four of the possible six Phobos and Deimos transits during this
year's 'eclipse season' from the rover sites," said Jim Bell of the Mars
Exploration Rover Project at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

A recent photo shoot involved a transit of Deimos from the Spirit
rover's vantage point at Gusev Crater. Earlier sessions were all Phobos
transits, Bell explained.

"Of course it's a cool thing to do, but more importantly, there's some
good science to be had because we're using these data to refine the
orbits and orbital evolutions of both satellites," Bell told
SPACE.com. "The data from 2005 complement the eclipse data that we got
in 2004," he said.

Credit: QuickTime Movie by Gus Frederick

If rover operations survive into the 2006 eclipse season, Bell said,
there's a good chance of learning more about the rate at which Phobos -
in a much lower orbit around Mars that Deimos - will slowly spiral in
and impact the red planet. Phobos could break up due to gravitational
forces and form a ring of debris about Mars - either event estimated to
be millions of years into the future.

Rovers on a roll

The Opportunity and Spirit rovers have been examining Mars since their
respective touchdowns in January 2004.

The Mars machinery has operated more than four times as long as their
successful three-month primary missions. While Spirit is exploring the
Columbia Hills at Gusev Crater, Opportunity is on the other side of the
planet, scouting about in Meridiani Planum - a large expanse of open
landscape.

NASA is expected to extend the rover missions by funding the project for
another six months, said Doug McCuistion, Mars Exploration Program
Director at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Presently, the rover operations are funded through the end of this
month. A new slug of money would keep the robots on the move from April
1st to the end of September, McCuistion said.

"We've completely voided the warranty [on the rovers] at this point,"
said Steve Squyres, the lead scientist for the Mars rovers at Cornell

[meteorite-list] campos sales sale

List Members,
Why not just leave the guy alone? Has he hurt anyone?
He seems to follow rule number 9 of the general list
policies by placing the word 'sale' in the subject
line. Very few others do this, and we have a lot of
repeated posts of sales going on, usually without
complaints. Most of us like to check out what is
being offered by list members but if we don't want to,
all we have to do is press that 'delete' key.
Best,

Re: [meteorite-list] More on Jefferson and Weston from Burke

2005-03-22 Thread Martin Horejsi
Hello Bernd and All,
In my article about historical falls in the November 2004 issue of
Meteorite Magazine, I included the Jefferson quote as it, whether
really said or not, has become as tied to Weston as the dog to Nakhla.
However, as a result of my study of Weston's place in the evolution of
meteorite science, I included the following words as well:

" But in defense of Jefferson, he is correct in that science is
parsimonious thus favoring the simplest answer, and it is likely that
Jefferson did not dispute the origin of the stones, but rather their
mode of delivery."

Cheers,
Martin

BURKE J.G. (1986) Cosmic Debris - Meteorites in History, p. 57:
It was not until October 1805 that Ellicott received published
material from France,
which convinced him that stones did fall, that they had an unusual
composition and
texture, and that they were generated in the atmosphere. He advised
Jefferson of
his conversion, and Jefferson responded on 25 October 1805. He wrote
that he had not
seen the documents to which Ellicott referred, but that he had read
Izam's Lithologie
atmosphérique, which was "an industrious collection" of facts of the
same kind:

"I do not say that I disbelieve the testimony but neither can I say I
believe it. Chemistry
is too much in its infancy to satisfy us that the lapidific elements
exist in the atmosphere
and that the process can be completed there. I do not know that this
would be against the laws
of nature and therefore I do not say it is impossible; but as it is so
much unlike any operation
of nature we have ever seen it requires testimony proportionately
strong."

This passage indicates that Jefferson's skepticism was not about the
fall of meteorites, but
about their generation in the atmosphere. It is in this light that we
should attempt to judge
whether or not the remark so often attributed to him following the
fall of the Weston meteorite
two years later is apocryphal - namely, "It is easier to believe that
two Yankee professors
would lie than that stones would fall from heaven." In his Discourse
on Jefferson, Samuel Latham
Mitchill reported that soon after the Weston fall, he received an
account and a specimen from
friends. A senator who was to dine with Jefferson that evening asked
to borrow the report and
sample to show to the President and request his comments. When
presented with the evidence,
Jefferson, according to Mitchill's friend, said that "it is all a
lie." Later, on 15 February 1808,
in a reply to a letter from a citizen offering to send a fragment of
the Weston stone for an official
examination by the Congress, Jefferson suggested that the members of a
scientific society would be
better qualified to examine the stone, "supposed meteoric," than those
of the national legislature.
He continued:

"We certainly are not to deny whatever we cannot account for. A
thousand phenomena present
themselves daily which we cannot explain, but where facts are
suggested, bearing no analogy
with the laws of nature as yet known to us, their verity needs proof
proportioned to their
difficulty. A cautious mind will weigh the opposition of the
phenomenon to everything hitherto
observed, the strength of the testimony by which it is supported, and
the error and misconceptions
to which even our senses are liable. It may be very difficult to
explain how the stone you possess
came into the position in which it was found. But is it easier to
explain how it got into the clouds
from whence it is supposed to have fallen? The actual fact however is
the thing to be established."

The tenor and even the wording of this letter is quite similar as that
in Jefferson's December 1803
reply to Ellicott. It is possible that, upon reflection, he dismissed
the notion of the atmospheric
generation of stones and reverted to his original ambivalence about
their fall. One other point is
relevant. At the time of the Weston fall, the New England states were
in an uproar about the economic
effects of the Jeffersonian-sponsored Embargo Act of November 1806,
and there was even talk of secession.
Jefferson was antagonistic to the New Englanders, because they sought
to circumvent the embargo by smuggling
goods into Canada. It is therefore possible that soon after the fall
and before the American Philosophical
Society in March 1808 heard Silliman's report and accepted his memoir
for publication, Jefferson, in a fit
of temper, made the remark. But scholars have not yet located the
source, so that at this time it must
remain conjectural.

Best regards,
Bernd

the 50 First Dates too, but what the heck is "Muppet's

Maybe Steve should be given the nickname "Ground Hog

Arnold.
