[meteorite-list] RITE OR WRONG?

2005-04-26 Thread Sterling K. Webb
Hi,

After many years, I have my first meteor-right or meteor-wrong
question for List opinion!

Is this a Campo?

Re: [meteorite-list] RITE OR WRONG?

2005-04-26 Thread Meteoriteshow
Hi Sterling and All,

I agree that we can wonder... First of all it is difficult for me to know
from the picture itself and second this ebay member does not usually sell
meteorites... But in the other hand he sells lots of other kinds of minerals
and it would be quite a high risk for him to propose this item, not being
sure of what he's talking about...
Maybe some other members more specialized than me in Campo (which is easy to
find!!!) can have a better idea from the picture?
Kind regards,

Hola Mike,

read that picturebook first:

The Trip to Panama

by Janosch

Card catalog description
Little Bear and Little Tiger leave their comfortable home behind to go in
search of Panama, the land of their dreams, and end up in the most beautiful
place in the world.

Customers Review:
This is an adorable story about a little bear and a little tiger, who have a
cute home but go searching for the greener grass, only to find it back at
their own home after a long trip. The story is filled with little details
that are so endearing, such as the bear's affinity to fishing, the tiger's
repeated assurances that they have nothing to fear (for various reasons),
the tiger's care to protect his little tiger-striped duck, etc. My 4-year
old son loves this book. The artwork is excellent. This is a classic title,
popular since the 80s in Germany

Re: [meteorite-list] items of interest/sale update -----> my AD Deport(a) tkw 604grams only

2005-04-26 Thread Martin Altmann
Well Dirk,

at least for me his postings are helping for not being ashamed, a
stalking-horse to ride on, when I'll have to abuse the list for
advertisments.

I'm still catalogueing the collection, I dissolve, and found smth rare of
interest for the Texas collector, I think.

Deport(a)
Red River County, Texas, USA
Find 1944
Olivine brozite chondrite H4
Tkw: 604g

Thus not even easy to get.
I have a partslice of whopping 23,73g - 50% of the edges with rind.

Unfortunately the collector fixed the slice in his display case with that
lute often used for holding mineral specimens in place,
KIDS NEVER DO THIS WITH YOU METEORITES !
so that the back surface has now stainings, where the lute was.
Don't know how deep it sucked in and whether it will disappear with some
grinding.
The front side is fine.

Any offers?

Thanks
Martin

Iiiih, how romantic,
it's because of my poor english, I found in the dictionnary: lute.
I mean this grey plasticine-like stuff.
Multiple choice, tell me the right vocable:

lute
luting
cement
mastic
putty
sticky mineral clay (that sounds more suitable for natural born
Millbillillies...)

Nevertheless the warning is very necessary. Especially those new collectors,
who collected minerals before and are used to fix their specimens with that
stuff, have to be warned.
I posted a warning to the German meteorite list too and got a desperate
feedback from a collector, who was examining now his collection - and
several of the specimens, also expensive ones, are ruined!!
All you can do, is to grind down, the afflicted parts. Imagine to have an
historical achondrite slice, where you have to grind down 2mmnot so
nice, is it?

"Putty" is the term that you want to use. I never heard the term "lute" used
for anything other
than the musical instrument, but apparently it does have a second definition as
a substance used to
seal joints or porous surfaces (which wouldn't quite fit the meaning that you
want):

http://www.answers.com/lute&r=67

Anyway, I've been using a kind of putty on some of my larger pieces, but never
on cut surfaces.
I've used a small spot of "quake putty" on the fusion crust of larger pieces to
hold them in place.
Hopefully it isn't causing harm to the fusion crust:

As we are at the subject of meteorite databases, a new MetBase version (7.1)
has just been released by list member, private collector and MetSoc NomCom

all meteorites ever published up to (and including) MetBulls # 87 and 88.

This is probably the most powerful commercially available electronic tool
for immediate retrieval meteorite data. Regarding the license conditions,

[meteorite-list] Bright Flash in the Sky in Alaska Reported

2005-04-26 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.news-miner.com/Stories/0,1413,113~7244~2833805,00.html

Official weighs in on reported flash in the sky
By AMANDA BOHMAN
Fairbanks Daily News-Miner (Alaska)
April 24, 2005

As 37-year-old John Kempen traveled the Parks Highway to Nenana at about
2 a.m. Saturday, he watched the sky, hoping to point out the northern
lights to his girlfriend.

But instead of spotting a blur of emerald green, Kempen saw a bright
flash of bluish white with sparks for a tail and fiery "chunks breaking
off."

The comet-like object, maybe the size of a basketball, slid across the
sky from the southwest to the northeast.

Kempen figured the object was a meteor.

According to Neal Brown, director of the space grant program at the
University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute, Kempen probably
saw a piece of space junk.

An estimated 5,000 to 10,000 pieces of useless debris orbit the Earth,
Brown said, and more is continually added. Among the objects are rocket
motors, and bolts and flanges, which are adapters between rocket motors.
Also orbiting the earth are old satellites and out-of-commission
spacecraft.

"From about 100 to 5,000 miles away from the Earth, it's a virtual
junkyard," Brown said. "I think there's an astronaut's glove still out
there."

Gravity pulls the junk back to Earth.

"It's coming in all the time," Brown said.

The main reason Kempen's sighting sounds more like junk than a meteor is
that it exhibited color, Brown said.

"Meteors don't have any blue or green or any colors," he said. "Most of
the meteors are just rocks."

Secondly, the sighting was in the wrong part of the sky to be a Lyrid
meteor, which would likely travel from northeast to southwest.

"It's the exact opposite of what they described," Brown said. "It still
could have been a meteor, but I really don't think so."

Re: [meteorite-list] Putty

2005-04-26 Thread Göran Axelsson
I agree!
I have collected minerals for a number of years and never use it
on my collection. Whenever I get a new stone with putty on, my first
thing I do is to remove any trace of it.
Even putty that is said to not leave any trace does so after a few years.
The thing I have found that is best to mount stones with is hot melt glue.
Since it isn't that viscous it never penetrates the rock and it is easy to
just peel away.
Yes, I have used it on meteorites too. I have cut a couple of NWA 869
and mounted them in plastic display cases. A perfect gift to give to
those interested in science.

Hi Jeff and thanks for making this searchable database
available. It will undoubtedly be a very useful
resource. Would it be possible to have a link to high
quality photos of the meteorites included in the
dataase? I am sure that people would be very willing
to send photos of representative specimens.

Thanks for your efforts!

That would be a better function for one of the contributing databases like
the Catalogue of Meteorites or MetBase, or somebody interesting in building
and maintaining such a collection. However, if there was an archive of
photos out there on the web that I could link to, I'd do that.

2005-04-26 Thread stan .
Wow - what a neat tool!
As a possible suggestion-
I'm curious if it would be possible to link the database to academic
research avalible on the web.

For example, when I type in one of my favorite achonderites, Dhofar 007 - I
get back some basics on the find - it fell in 1999, was classified as a
cumulate eucrite, ect. However a google search turns up a recent paper by
Yamaguchi et al that says Dho 007 may actually be a mesosiderite.

Would it be possible to have the web page do a google search on the quierred
rock and then return web pages that contain .PDFs for example? Something
like that would turn the database into quite a powerfull tool to find the
latest data on a particular stone I would think.

The database on the CD from the 2000 catalogue is lousy programmed. Leads to
dead-locks on my computer.
In windows versions <2000, some variables stay unassigned, so that the
combined search produces errors.
(Never got my 150Euros back).
Updates, other than mentioned in the Catalogue, never were available,
and to search for a single meteorite required to know the complete name with
correct spelling.

On the othe hand, the BMNH-online searchable database gives only the basic
data to each meteorite.

Thus this new database is welcomed by my heart!!

Nevertheless soon I will buy Joern's Metbase.

The actual information that I present about each meteorite is similar to
what the NHM online database gives. You still have to buy one of the good
programs to get details.

What I hope to do is to have my database take you directly to the
appropriate record in the other databases, assuming you have them installed
on your system, just like it already can do with World Wind (a fantastic
free download, if you don't know about it). I'll be working with Joern on
this in the future.

It already does something like this... search for meteorites, then click on
an individual meteorite name, then click on the NASA ADS link. It will
search for papers and abstracts containing that name, and then you can
click on the ADS links to see the text, when available.

I can still add a google search link if people want it.

The gain is that this database will always be up to date, whereas the
Catalogue has not been updated in 2-3 years. Soon, this database will also
contain all of the provisional names we have given out over the years, so
you can find out what we know about them too.

I can't help you with your business dealings with NHM.

impressive.
my only suggestionn would then be to move the NASA ADS link to the first
page that gets returned and possibly simply call the link something like
'this meteorite in the literture' - make it nice and acessable to anyone who
is using the database for the first time and might not be familiar with NASA
ADS. I have been searching around there now on a few stones in my collection
and have found much research that google didnt previously turn up.

quite a handy tool!

2005-04-26 Thread dean bessey
.012 is your standard size and what you use on most
chondrites. Solid easy to control blade an dnot to
thick.
I also use the .06 blades but they are flimsy and
harder to control and are a lot more work to use. They
also dont last as long.
But if it is higher value material the .06 blades
might be better as you have less cut loss (As long as
the cut is good enough that you dont lose more
material to make a smooth surface if you polish it.
My advice is to buy a couple of each and try them out
first and then when you decide what you like best you
can buy in bulk to save money.
I always try and have a supply of both always
available.
Cheers

Cassini Finds Particles Near Saturn's Moon Enceladus

The Cassini spacecraft has discovered intriguing dust particles
around Saturn's moon Enceladus. The particles might indicate the
existence of a dust cloud around Enceladus, or they may have
originated from Saturn's outermost ring, the E-ring.

"We are making measurements in the plane of the E-ring," said Dr.
Thanasis Economou, a senior scientist at the University of
Chicago's Enrico Fermi Institute. Economou is the lead
researcher on the high rate detector, part of a larger instrument
on Cassini called the cosmic dust analyzer. "It will take a few
more flybys to distinguish if the dust flux is originating from
the E-ring as opposed to a source at Enceladus."

Enceladus is rapidly becoming a very interesting target for
Cassini. So much so that scientists and engineers are planning
to revise the altitude of the next flyby to get a closer look.
Additional Cassini encounters with Enceladus are scheduled for
July 14, 2005, and March 12, 2008. The July 14 flyby was to be
at an altitude of 1,000 kilometers (620 miles), but the mission
team now plans to lower that altitude to about 175 kilometers
(109 miles). This will be Cassini's lowest-altitude flyby of any
object during its nominal four-year tour.

Earlier this year Cassini completed two flybys of Enceladus. On
February 17, Cassini encountered Enceladus at an altitude of
1,167 kilometers (725 miles). On that date, the cosmic dust
analyzer with its high rate detector recorded thousands of
particle hits during a period of 38 minutes. Cassini executed
another flyby of Enceladus on March 9 at an altitude of 500
kilometers (310 miles). "Again we observed a stream of dust
particles," said Economou. The largest particles detected
measure no more than the diameter of a human hair -- too small to
pose any danger to Cassini.

Scientists have speculated that Enceladus is the source of
Saturn's E ring, the planet's widest, stretching 302,557
kilometers (188,000 miles). It's possible, the scientists say,
that tidal interactions between Enceladus and Mimas, two other
moons of Saturn, have heated Enceladus' interior causing water
volcanism.

"These measurements are extremely important in order to
understand the role of Enceladus as the source of the water ice
particles in the E ring," said Dr. Ralf Srama, of the Max Planck
Institute for Nuclear Physics, Heidelberg, Germany. Srama is
principal investigator of the cosmic dust analyzer science team.
This study requires precise measurements of dust densities near
the Enceladus region, "but without the high rate detector this
would not be possible," said Srama.

Another of Cassini's instruments, the magnetometer, recently
discovered water ions which could be part of a very thin
atmosphere around Enceladus. Enceladus is a relatively small
moon. The amount of gravity it exerts is not enough to hold an
atmosphere very long. Therefore a strong, continuous source is
required to maintain the atmosphere.

Enceladus measures 500 kilometers (310 miles) in diameter and
reflects nearly 100 percent of the light that hits its ice-
covered surface. It orbits Saturn at a distance of approximately
237,378 kilometers (147,500 miles), about two-thirds the distance
from Earth to the moon.

The cosmic dust analyzer provides direct observations of small
ice or dust particles in the Saturn system in order to
investigate their physical, chemical and dynamical properties.
It is made up of two detectors. The University of Chicago built
the high rate detector, which made these observations. With
further analysis, the cosmic dust analyzer might be able to
determine whether the particles are made of ice or dust.

For images and information on the Cassini mission visit
http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov and http://www.nasa.gov/cassini .

The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the
European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. The Jet
Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of
Technology in Pasadena, manages the Cassini-Huygens mission for
NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington, D.C. The Cassini
orbiter was designed, developed and assembled at JPL.

[meteorite-list] Best all around meteorite books

2005-04-26 Thread stan .
I was curious if anyone would care to share their opinions on the best all
around meteorite books - anything from books detailing meteorites such as
meteorites A to Z or Kilgore's new thin section book - to more academic
works such as 'meteorites and their planet planets' - particularly with
specific intrest towards books detailing the classification of meteorites.

just curious if there is anything out there that I should took to add to my

I'd add Meteorites, Ice, and Antarctica to the list if you don't already have

Hi Stan & List
Here are the books that are in print that I would recommend everyone have at
least up to the level they feel comfortable with. These only include the books
that are the "Best all around" books for the collector. Of course there are
numerous other books that one should have that are out of print.
Some will notice that there are few books missing but I included only the bare
bones minimum of books.

All levels
Grady "Catalogue of Meteorites" 5th ed

Beginner

Norton "Rocks from Space" Great introductory text
Zanda " Meteorites their Impact on Science and History" Great picture book

Next Step
Bevan "Meteorites a Journey through Space and Time" Barely makes it to this
level
Norton " Cambridge Encyclopedia of Meteorites" Definitely will take you to the
next level
McSween " Meteorites and Their Parent Planets" Pull out your geology degree

Advanced

Papike "Planetary Materials" Mineralogy of meteorites.
Hutchison " Meteorites a Petrologic, Chemical and Isotopic Synthesis" Think

If you need any help getting these books let me know as I do sell some of them.
If you want more specialized recommendations I would be glad to give those as
well.

BTW I'm honored that you would put my little book on your list of must haves.
Thanks

What, no H.H. Ninninger books? "Find A Falling Star" is very worthy of
having in one's collection, and will pull at one's heart to see his devotion
to the meteorite world. A must to any real meteorite book list.
Just my 2 cents,

Re: [meteorite-list] Best all around meteorite books

2005-04-26 Thread meteoriteplaya
Hi Dave
All the books you mentioned should be in ones library but Stan was looking for
books that in my words have some meat. That is to say they will help you
understand meteorites better especially from the science side. The books you
mentioned were more story books and not serious studies in meteorites type
books.
Again all should be in a good meteorite collectors library but just don't fit
into what I believe Stan was looking for.
Hope that helps.

Re: [meteorite-list] Some sick people!!!

2005-04-26 Thread drtanuki
Dear Tom,
Yes, there are some sick comments made on the
Blog. I do not own the blog and do not control it. I
am sorry someone included a comment about your
daughter on the blog.
There is a COMMENT button on the front page of the
blog that you can contact the owner directly and ask
him/her to remove that comment.
I have been away for the past 10 days and came back
to over 500 emails in my mail box and many from Steve
Chicago. This is why I made the appeal to Steve to
calm down his fever for postings after he had promised
the list that he would.
I see no reason for you to quit the MetList because
of someone posting to the blog.
One reason for my asking to create the blog was to
keep the fighting and trash off of the MetList. I
also had hope that people would post positive
contributions. The blog has degenerated to the point
that it is not worth reading except for an occasional
Topic that the Blogowner has taken the time to create.
You can judge from many of the posts to the blog
that there are surely some sick people posting to it
and they are also members of the MetList.
Again sorry for an attack on your daughter.
Best Always in LIFE, Dirk...Tokyo

Re: [meteorite-list] Some sick people!!!

2005-04-26 Thread Michael L Blood
Hi Tom,
I saw the blog was utter trash within 30 minutes of it's inception.
I went back to check it out one more time - about a week ago - everyone
seemed to be using my name as a sender, as well as other people I could
tell did not write that way - it is a well of garbage - cowards that make
the anti hero on DEADWOOD look like an alter boy.
Unfortunately, leaving this list will likely not protect your
daughter, you or anyone else from such scum.
I refuse to even go there to see what was said. I believe the world
would be a better place if everyone refused to even check it out.
I do not, however, see the link between the blog and this list.
Best wishes, Michael

Tom,

I second everything everybody has said about the worthlessness of that blog.

And remember what Admiral Farragut said at the Battle of Mobile Bay: "Full
Stream Ahead, and Damn the Blogs!"
