[meteorite-list] Tom's Franconia slice

2005-05-07 Thread bernd . pauli
Hello List,

A very hearty thank you to all those good people on our List that
kindly offered to help out. So many list members have offered to
help in this matter and they were not only from Arizona but from
all over the United States. Mike Miller does live in Kingman and
he too kindly offered to accept my payment for Tom's slice through
his PayPal account and then give it directly to Tom.

Thank you all
very much,

Bernd

[meteorite-list] I'm back !

2005-05-07 Thread Pelé Pierre-Marie
Hello to the List.

I'm back from my US trip. I have seen some of the
nicest landscapes I've ever seen : Grand Canyon,
Monument Valley NP, Arches, Bryce Canyon, Sequoia NP.

I invite everyone to visit these places.

I also hunted meteorites in dry lakes of the Mojave
Desert, in Franconia, Gold Basin, Death Valley.

No real meteorite finds - in fact, one or two stones
have to be checked a bit more - and I've to make
analyzed the strange greenish stone some of you think
it could be a fine-grained eucrite and that I found in
the Gold Basin strewnfield.

I have to thank all the Meteorite List members who
gave me hints and advice to prepare my trip.

You'll be able to read my trip notes (in french sorry)
and view pictures from may 12th on :
http://www.meteor-center.com/usa2005

Best regards,

Pierre-Marie PELE

Adam,

Shut down, get out and treasure hunt. Your attempt at logic had me going until
you lost control and used the word tactics. Submit a brain sample to an
authorized institution upon your ultimate demise, if they'll accept it.

Uh, it's May, spring on Earth (but not for Norbert, Jeff and Rodrigo) and
please not the number war again!
Hey, there was this long (and for most list members I guess somehat boring)
argue, when people sold stuff under your number, whether it was the same
 material or not.that wasn't o.k..
But what do you want more in this case?
He made microprobe, if the values are sufficient for comparing and the same
like with yours, if it's from the same source and if it's the very same
 stuff -
to inflate the number mess would be contraproductive for collectors and
 science.

Come on, now. Especially where the desert gets dry, I have the vision, that
dealers will buy each one 150 stones, which are NWA 869 and even if the
values, the data (and for the crazy ones the microprobe) shows, that indeed
it's NWA869, they will make twothousand new NWA-numbers out of it, vulgo
 2000 new meteorites.
Would be that serious in your eyes?

 My two beers.

  Stan,

If it has been officially microprobed, why didn't you get your own number
assignment? I do not like your insinuations that NWA 1110 wasn't properly
studied. When making a pairing conclusion usually the first number in a
series is used. In this case that would be NWA 1068 not NWA 1110.

I feel you are trying to create bad will here. I do not understand why
 you
feel the need to compare your material to ours. Last week it was a
Ureilite, before that it was a primitive achondrite, now a Martian piece.
Let scientists make pairing conclusions. Submit samples and have the work
done. I am not questioning the authenticity of your pieces, just you
  tactics.

[meteorite-list] NHM - Paris

2005-05-07 Thread MARSROX
I am in the process of writing the conclusion to The Fall in France, part
one being in the current issue of Meteorite.

It would be helpful for me to know if anyone has had the opportunity to
privately view the Natural History Museum's historic meteorites, L'Aigle,
Chassi
gny, Orgueil, Ornans, Barbotan etc., that have not been publicly displayed
since 1996.

Further, if anyone can come up with a translation to English of the clause
representing this museum's official legal policy regarding the exchange of
material (I have been informed that all state sponsored museums in France are
equally bound to the same policy) this would be terrific.

Please do not post this information on the m-list and instead message me

I am sure there are people on the list that would like to get your
giveaways, but why don't you put nice cards with your give aways and take them
down to the local school and give them to the science teacher. The teacher
will be happy because he will have some give aways to motivate the kids. The
kids will be happy to get a real space rock, maybe it will even start them on a
science career. You'll be happy because the teacher and students will give you
the attention you crave. Even the list will be happy because you will have
one less reason to post to the list.

[meteorite-list] AD: Pedigree specimens for sale - Zeitschel Week at Martins' !!

2005-05-07 Thread Martin Altmann
My Dearest Folks,

at the moment I'm cashing a collection for a friend and remembering the
recent Haag hype, may he live long and prosper,
I think I have something very interesting for the pedigree specimen
collector to offer:
Some Zeitschel-pieces with labels.

Walter Zeitschel, who must be now in his mid-70ies, is one of the most
important meteorite collectors in history.
Starting in the early 1960ies he collected, hunted and gathered together
with more than 300 plane trips his meteorites and assembled the largest
private meteorite collection in existence, conatining almost 800 locations
(and not NWA 1256-2049), which he sold in 1988 to the National Polar
Research Institute, Tokyo.
It was him from whom little Martin bought his very first meteorite - it must
have been in 1981, when also Bernd acquired his first specimen, also from
Zeitschel and funny enough, my one was a little Mundrabilla too!

Nininger, Monnig, Huss, Haag, King for sure a place in that famous row
is due to Walter Zeitschel and certainly his labels and the specimens of his
provenience are special collectibles!

The first one I listed on ebay, ending tomorrow, for you to see, how the
labels look like:

Hi List, I always loved meteorite times and still do, but I was truly offend
by it tonight! I was just looking around like I always do, and got to the
meteorite people section. I noticed something I had missed before. There
are a number of great people on there, people that made great contributions
to the meteorite community, then I saw it, a thief who's only interest in
meteorites was to melt them down, ya, you guessed it, Daniel Moreau
Barringer.
That mans name is not even worthy of the Blog, but there he is on a page
about collecting. Keep in mind the Barringer family will have you arrested
if you try to COLLECT meteorites on there property, they would rather see
them rust away! Ya, a real meteorite person, let's melt them down so I can
get rich off the Nickel. What no main mass, best not tell the government,
they are going to give me this land because I plan on mining the main mass,
but not all is lost, I can make people pay to see the crater!
I am sorry list, I can not see his name with out going off into the deep
end, I have no respect for thieves!

Hi List, I always loved meteorite times and still do, but I was truly
offend
by it tonight! I was just looking around like I always do, and got to
the
meteorite people section. I noticed something I had missed before. There
are a number of great people on there, people that made great
contributions
to the meteorite community, then I saw it, a thief who's only interest in
meteorites was to melt them down, ya, you guessed it, Daniel Moreau
Barringer.
That mans name is not even worthy of the Blog, but there he is on a page
about collecting. Keep in mind the Barringer family will have you
arrested
if you try to COLLECT meteorites on there property, they would rather see
them rust away! Ya, a real meteorite person, let's melt them down so I
can
get rich off the Nickel. What no main mass, best not tell the government,
they are going to give me this land because I plan on mining the main
mass,
but not all is lost, I can make people pay to see the crater!
I am sorry list, I can not see his name with out going off into the deep
end, I have no respect for thieves!

Actually, no, anyone who knows me knows that I would not compromise my
morals for money or anything else for that matter! (probably why I am broke)
He was given the land for mining, there was nothing to mine, he knew it,
but did not tell the government about it, he just let them give it to him.
Even if he did not know, an honest man would of gave it back when he found
out.
I would love to own the crater, hunting parties every week end

Hey, let the poor man rest in his grave.
You can't judge something done 80 years ago by todays standard.
You have to take into account the society and mindset of that time
and my impression was that he tried to find the main mass until
he ran out of money and investors.
A good advice is don't write emails when drunk, you'll regret it.
Not saying that you are drunk, but it's still a good advice.

Dear Tom and List,
Another question is why did`t the National Park
Service force the sale of the land so that it would
have become an National Park? Doesn`t the crater
deserve status as a national treasure? Perhaps
politics within the state of Arizona and Bar T Ranch
play a role? Dirk...Tokyo

[meteorite-list] Meteorites with Impacts

2005-05-07 Thread thetoprok

Hello List,
I'm a bit late on this subject, but I didn't see any mention of the
tiny Franconia irons. Some of them also have very distinct impact pits.
I'll try to photograph them and put them on my webshots site.

Actually, no, anyone who knows me knows that I would not compromise my
morals for money or anything else for that matter! (probably why I am
broke)
He was given the land for mining, there was nothing to mine, he knew it,
but did not tell the government about it, he just let them give it to him.
Even if he did not know, an honest man would of gave it back when he found
 out.

Hi Tom.

Does this mean you'll be giving your recent Franconia find to the
Smithsonian? After all, it really belongs to the people and not you
individually.

Just curious,
Frank

Hey Frank, don't get me started on the Smithsonian! The majority of the
meteorites are not on display, so they do the people no good. Besides they
are rotten thieves too, refer to the story of the Old Woman meteorite and
there attempt to steal it!

Tom,
Actually Barringer devoted a substantial amount of time and effort to
recover the main mass. Probably more than many of us would ever be capable
of disposing. You would consider that an admirable attribute, wouldn't you?

Trick question, as a member of the meteorite community, NO, he devoted a
lot of time to find the main mass so he could melt it down for the Nickel.

As a miner out to make a buck, sure it is admirable.

[meteorite-list] SSteve Arnold, Chicago!!!!

2005-05-07 Thread DNAndrews
Dana,
The only reason SSteve gives his specks away instead of selling them
on eBay or giving them to class rooms is simple. It's to draw attention
to himself. How much attention on the list would he have if he gave them
away to a local school? None! It's simple to see. If you knew him
like we know him, you'd know what we are talking about. It's all for
attentionLook at me! Look at me! What I saw from list members
was not bashingmerely suggestions for SSteve.

Ebay feedback is not the sole criteria for judgement. Actually, he's
been lucky in that department...eh, Howard?

Dana,
The list does not need a mother telling everyone what
to do, we already have a few thqnk you.
Your post to the list is not within the rules and
guidelines set up by the list owner.
I think it's fine if Stwvw wants to giveaway some of
his microspecks, but he doesn't need to remind
everyone about his unique services every day. Since
you're a supporter of Steve, you must think it's okay
to ripp=off money from the Tsunami Relief Fund,
correct? If so, shame on you too.

failed.
I am still not sure what the wasted time was all
about
worth wasting.
Steve's business practices do not look all that bad
according to his ebay rating either.
Let he perfect in all areas of life spew the next

Hi List, I always loved meteorite times and
still do, but I was truly
   offend
by it tonight! I was just looking around like
I always do, and got to
   the
meteorite people section. I noticed something I
 had missed before.
 There
are a number of great people on there, people
 that made great
   contributions
to the meteorite community, then I saw it, a
 thief who's only interest
 in
meteorites was to melt them down, ya, you
 guessed it, Daniel Moreau
   Barringer.
That mans name is not even worthy of the Blog,
but there he is on a
 page
about collecting. Keep in mind the Barringer
 family will have you
   arrested
if you try to COLLECT meteorites on there
 property, they would rather
 see
them rust away! Ya, a real meteorite person,
let's melt them down so I
   can
get rich off the Nickel. What no main mass, best
 not tell the
 government,
they are going to give me this land because I
 plan on mining the main
   mass,
but not all is lost, I can make people pay to
 see the crater!
I am sorry list, I can not see his name with
 out going off into the
 deep
end, I have no respect for thieves!

Hey list, I am sorry about the post wow. These bloggers hide behind the
secrecy of the blog and say stuff like that. I posted it to the list in
hopes that someone knows who posted it, I know someone does and I REALLY

like Barringer, but that is no reason to be accused of molesting my kid.
Again, I am sorry to the list!!
