[meteorite-list] Tucson 2006....see you in one week

2006-01-25 Thread MARK BOSTICK

Hello Everyone,

A short note to those interested that I, like usual, will be arriving in
Tucson on Thursday 2nd and leaving on Monday 6st. Show six in a row for
me...not the double digits of some list members, but enough that should
qualify me as a Tucson veteran.

Was not sure if I could make it this year, having just moved into a new
house last month, but I think I have things worked out.

Looking forward to talking, dealing and trading meteorites...while enjoying
a cold beerand missing the Super Bowl. Never have seen a Super Bowl
game since playing with meteorites.

If you are going to the show and would like to meet uplike we won't all
mostly be at the Inn-Suites and the events...then e-mail me off list for my
cell phone number. I can usually be found wherever their are
meteorites...and a few places where they are not.

[meteorite-list] Roving Mars: New Lockheed Marting-Sponsored IMAX Film to Premier at National Air and Space Museum

2006-01-25 Thread Ron Baalke

Lockheed Martin Corporation

Media Contact:
Buddy Nelson, (510) 797-0349

January 20, 2006

ROVING MARS: NEW LOCKHEED MARTIN-SPONSORED IMAX FILM TO PREMIERE AT
NATIONAL AIR AND SPACE MUSEUM

Denver, CO -- Lockheed Martin today announced its sponsorship of "Roving
Mars," a Walt Disney Pictures film that will begin showing exclusively in
IMAX theaters around the country Jan. 27, 2006. The World Premiere of
"Roving Mars" will take place Jan. 26, 2006 at the Smithsonian National
Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.

"Roving Mars" follows the journey of Steve Squyres, lead science
investigator for the Mars Exploration Rovers and the NASA/Jet Propulsion
Laboratory team responsible for building and launching the rovers and
directing their investigation of the martian surface. It takes viewers on
an historic voyage of exploration of the "Red Planet," with a compelling
look at challenges and triumphs along the way.

"Lockheed Martin is enormously pleased to sponsor 'Roving Mars' because we
believe that exploration speaks to the fundamental human desire to
understand the nature of our Universe and inspires our finest efforts,"
said G. Thomas Marsh, executive vice president of Lockheed Martin Space
Systems Company. "Walt Disney himself was a true visionary who presented
the wonders of space exploration to the American public years before the
first satellite was even launched. We are proud to be working with the
company he created to bring this film to the next generation of
explorers."

"Roving Mars" continues the corporation's dedication to the goal of
educating and inspiring people of all ages about the fantastic wonders and
relevance of the last great frontier -- outer space. Beginning in 1985
with "The Dream is Alive" and followed by "The Blue Planet," "Destiny in
Space," "Mission to Mir," "Space Station 3D" and "Magnificent Desolation
-- Walking on the Moon 3D," Lockheed Martin and its film partners have
employed large format films to enlighten, educate and inspire more than
100 million viewers.

Lockheed Martin, in partnership with NASA, has been engaged in the
exploration of Mars for more than 40 years. Among the many missions in
which Lockheed Martin has played a significant role are these milestones
in Mars exploration: Launched the first Mars flyby of Mariner 4 in 1964.
Built the Viking landers in 1976. Provided aeroshells and heatshields that
protected the Mars rovers. Designed, built and operates the Mars
Reconnaissance Orbiter that will arrive at Mars this March.

Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin employs about 135,000
people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design,
development, manufacture and integration of advanced technology systems,
products and services. The corporation reported 2004 sales of $35.5
billion.

Dear List Members,

A month or two ago I posted to the list that I felt that Steve Arnold - IMB
and Phil Mani should be nominated for a Harvey Award for their Huge Brenham
Main Mass discovery and also Geoff Notkin for his tireless work on behalf of
the Hurricane Katrina Fund Raiser among other too-numerous to list
meteorite-related activities.

I know that Geoff and Steve originally set up the Harvey Awards where they
could not nominate themselves for an award. I would like all list members to
join me here on the list to nominate these fine gentleman for a Harvey Award
an encourage them to make a new category where they could receive an award
if enough of us voted "YES" to this. Maybe they could create a "People's
Choice" award or something along these lines.

Everyone in favor, send the list a resounding "YES" and lets acknowledge
their contributions and achievements in public.

Consider this my "YES" vote...

2006-01-25 Thread Michael L Blood
Hi All,
I am printing my catalog today, so, any entries in the future
will not be in the catalog and will be limited to truly outstanding
pieces.
Today I received a fabulous entry. See Lot # 50 that will blow
your socks off. It will have a minimum bid which will be announced
at the auction, but I am confident it will be minimal for what it is.
Also, a beautiful entry has been made by the U of A SWMC
(Lot # 107) and the sale will go to them as a donation & the buyer can
declare their winning bid as a tax deduction (According to the SWMC).
Check these beauties out at:

http://www.michaelbloodmeteorites.com/AuctionTucson06.html

Also - all absentee bids should be placed within the next 48 hrs.
Best wishes, Michael

I would like to add my whole-hearted approval to Greg Hupe's idea and

[meteorite-list] Guide To North American Meteorites Map

2006-01-25 Thread AstronomicalResearchNetwork
When I saw this on the listed I ordered the map , it came today .
Anyone interested in a good map of North American meteorites

might want to get this one ! It of course is not up to date but
it is a wonder wall map . The cost was $25 + shipping .
A real bargain I think .

[meteorite-list] Harvey Awards + Thanks to Greg and the List

2006-01-25 Thread Greg Hupe

Dear Geoff and List Members,

First, thank you Geoff for accepting The People's Choice Award on behalf of
Steve, Phil and yourself. Your peers have sure given you guys a thunderous
"Yes" vote. You all three certainly deserve it. Congratulations on the first
annual People's Choice Award!

Secondly, I want to personally thank everyone who voted. Without you, things
like this do not happen. It has been my pleasure to bring a fun project like
this to the table.

Take care,
Greg

Dear Friends:

I had house guests last night, so have only now had the chance to read
your many kind emails. Wow, what a response! As Greg wrote to me,
privately, "The List has spoken."

When Steve and I came up with the idea of the Harveys, quite some years
ago now, we decided that we, ourselves, would not be eligible. It would be
tacky to give ourselves an award, right? : )

However, we dare not ignore the wishes of our friends and peers. I have
spoke to Steve, and we will gratefully receive the People's Award this
year. I have not yet spoken with Phil, but I certainly hope he will
concur, and it is certainly well deserved. As well as being the person who
believed in Steve's Brenham mission, and made it happen, Phil has made a
truly Herculean behind-the-scenes effort to bring the big Brenham to
Tucson, so that many of you good folks will have the pleasure of visiting
with it in person. Phil is too modest a fellow to tell you this himself.

Steve is on the road, at the moment, which is why he hasn't had a chance
to reply.

So, Greg and I will figure out a way to do this. Thank you all for your
support and good wishes, both of which mean a great deal to us!

I have one request/suggestion: let's make the People's Choice an annual
event, so that each year, you can all vote for some deserving person(s)
for a Harvey.

Thank you again, and I am looking forward to seeing many of you here in
sunny Tucson, this week and next week.

Sincerely

Geoff N.

Re: [meteorite-list] The most beautifull fresh and oriontedpallasiteever seen

2006-01-25 Thread MexicoDoug
Images: #36, #44, #48, #53 (53-flow lines, leading edge, and/or wire brush?)
seem to show a minimal orientation to me, if you compare the leading faces
to the flattened back.

Could there be a weak argument for some signs of orientation? Still, I'd
agree in principle with Mike, there are far better examples of orientation out
there! BTW, 'oriented' isn't exactly the word used to describe it: maybe it
is only claimed to be from the constellation of Orion? :-) Hey, if she
happens to be the most beautiful girl ever seen, but is she crying?
crying.? (crying=lawrencite) Just as Mike has a beef with oriented
exaggerations,
I believe many specimens' freshness is exaggerated. A slice of bread with a
small amount of mold isn't fresh just because it still hasn't rotted away
(it still should at least have its crust or for stonys fresh breaks). Where
is
the trademark bluish patina or coloration of burnt steel for a fresh iron?

We get to see truly beautifully oriented Sikhotes, as text-book examples of
oriented specimens. I wondered whether the low altitude they exploded at,
combined with the large crystal bandwidth helped preserve more of the bullet
and shield shapes. A larger incoming mass maintaining its integrity has a
great chance to develop deep regmaglypts which could theoretically "disorient"
the bolide by disrupting the aerodynamic flow. Not only might the Sikhote
Alin
fall have experienced more uniform ablation due to the greater uniformity
and size of the Iron-nickel crystals, and lack of inclusions, but it exploded
at what might be considered an optimum altitude to dissipate a lot of energy
and expose the fragments for just the right amount of time in a denser
atmosphere where the burnishing was probably as incredible as it was quickly
damped.
This could not have happened with smaller pieces entering from higher
altitudes, they might turn into cinders before reaching the ground. Maybe
someone
could comment on whether regmaglypts develop on leading faces of oriented
masses after long, energetic reentries, or whether regmaglypts solely are the
result of smoothing out crevices and irregular shapes in disoriented
reentries.

Is a classification of orientation only for two possibilities, presence or
absence? So if it is not oriented, then is it supposed to be disoriented? A
randomly tumbling mass might have no symmetry at all, but in nature wouldn't
there be a subjective distinction, when you get possibly parallel or not,
one, two, or three principal axes causing symmetry?

Back to Mike's thoughts, I would agree with his opinion that if you have to
work hard to find evidence for the axes of orientation, while it is a fun
specimen to study, it is really not something personally that would be
especially interesting or more valuable for where's Waldo type of
"orientation", but
rather for its other impressive attributes...

Saludos, Doug

Wrong! :-)

The second Neuschwanstein find was almost rectangular, but on one of the two
small sides, there were superb radial flow lines like a star or sund rays.

What about this light-yellow points on crust
http://fr.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/azizhabibi/detail?.dir=c584&.dnm=ba2fre2.jpg&.src=ph
It can be just sahara dust inside of regmaglyptes or inclusions. This still
can be silicate iron. Its little difficult to see from outside. I just dont
want to make states. It should be seen under loup.

So then we have only few oriented meteorites in the world with Adamana and
Baszkowka on the "nose cone" side.
OK, lets say its specimen with orientation instead of oriented specimen.
Here You have some of rollover lipping
http://fr.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/azizhabibi/detail?.dir=c584&.dnm=38fare2.jpg&.src=ph
Not soo perfect but they are here.

thats perfect oriented. With the same thinking, specimen with 95% of crust
we can't name as complete specimen :)

Lol, ok :D

For me, conservative as I am, with an oriented meteorite one should
reckognize easily, where the front and the back is.
I'm still missing a publication, where the aerodynamic processes of
sculpturing such oriented shapes are explained - smth like that series for
orientation at tektites we had in the meteorite magazine.
It would be highly necessary to instruct all these, who praise their
specimens as oriented, which have only accidentally similar shapes to an
oriented piece (often they haven't even that).

Does somebody knows of such an article, paper, book?
My "oriented shapes"-Nininger I donated away.

Re: [meteorite-list] The most beautifull fresh and oriontedpallasiteever seen

2006-01-25 Thread Michael Farmer

I understand, but you sent it, and I replied to it.
There is like .0001 % chance of that iron being pallasite. He shows one
inclusion that could be a crystal, but looks like a white or yellow crusty
thing, not a pallasite crystal.

On orientation, too many people try to pawn everything off as oriented.
Different regmaglypts, flat surface, or different crust do not make
orientaion. SHAPE does. Is there a nose? Are there flow lines from front to
back? Is there a rollover rim?
Habibi's has none of those things, just a very nice shape and nice deep
regmaglypts, nice iron, not the slightest hint of orientation though.

http://209.238.151.128/sa9.htm
These are oriented, not the nose, flow lines going from the front to back,
rollover lipping, concave backside.

That is oriented.

sure
Iron. There should be photos with bigger resolution than offered by Yahoo
to

see all details.

it is an iron. Second, it IS NOT ORIENTED.

I think You are wrong. It is highly regmaglypted from one side and flat,
from another. It can be oriented. Have 2 verry different crust surfaces.

It is a beautiful iron, it is not a pallasite, and it does not show the
slightest sign of flight orientation, but it does show nice regmaglypts.

Hola list & those, who stayed home!

Remember the Canyon Diablo Cohenite Bomb?
http://www.spacerocksinc.com/Jan23.html

Very rare one finds so much cohenite worms and so nicely arranged in a
Canyon Diablo.
Look down to the left, there is a schreibersite inclusion too.
Interesting enough, despite the fine orientation of the cohenite worms, the
original Widmannstaetter pattern
(Thompson Structure) is dispunged.

In browsing the web, you'll find this fine explaining page:
http://home.earthlink.net/~capricorn89/rim.htm

Well, we asked our chunk, whether it is a RIM specimen, but it answered only
"carbonados are eating the Bohemians in their soup - can't you see, that
that is the very same stuff!".

Hence. We had sliced the whole specimen, where the Pic of the Day slice
stems from and we have left about 30 similar fullslices between 30 and
80grams,
which we could etch for you, if you're interested.

And as little consolation for those, who couldn't come to Tucson,
we thought to give the slices away not at 2$/g, but at 1.25$.

So if we should prepare for you a slice, just email and how many gram it
should approximately have.

Buckleboo!

YES from Pomona in Australia, good idea Greg.

Finding a meteorite like the new Brenham main mass probably represents the
dreams of a majority of the list members.

How about "Keeping the Dream Alive" as a category? (borrowed from a gravelly
voiced radio personality here in Aus, don't know where he got the idea from)

Truly is a remarkable achievement.
