[meteorite-list] Re: Lets VOTE !
Dear Marcin and All: Last year (as previously mentioned by Adam), the owner of the Meteorite List, Mr. Art Jones, asked for feedback from all subscribers regarding what sort of advertising policy the List should adopt. That was the time to make comments to Art. I did, and I'm sure many of you did as well. Art listened. He instituted the one ad per week/per person rule as a result. So, in a sense, there already has been a vote. In the past, a couple of extremely unpleasant people have been thrown off the List for failing to observe the few, simple, reasonable guidelines. Art is a very patient person and it takes a lot to get thrown off, but it DOES happen! Personally, I'd be pleased if it happened a little more often : ) Okay, now how about some more of those hilarious TV ads featuring meteorites? This what I am talking about all the whining and petty bickering . I don't give a hoot how many ads or discussions go on as long we could all stop complaining . If you don't like the ad hit the delete key . If you don't like the person hit the delete key . Stop festering over these kid like topics . I hope we all don't whine and cry like this in the rest of our lives . I got my hand on the delete key Good Night and have a Wonderful Day tomorrow PS this is not an ad but I have a wonderful shipment of New Meteorites that should be here next week . That is if they don't lose it like FedX did 2 weeks ago . Spent 2 days on the phone with the Vice President of FedX , they found my package in Mexico with my correct address still on the package ! Ken My Friends I would rather read and delete 10 ads than read one more complaint , whining and petty bickering . My kids don't cry and complain 1/10 this much . Not even when they were babies ! On Steve AD;s there is nothing to see except name, weight and "I wait for offers" and then he not even send You reply to Your exchange/purchase offer. So for me its just annoying spam. But AD's from more serious dealers like Hupes or Farmer (or others more rarely seen) You can enjoy not only alot of rare types but also big, high quality photos !! I have not buy from Mike or Greg/Adam nothing from months becouse their stuff not fit my offer (and I don't make my collection bigger now), but I can read their ads every day if they will bing from lab new stuff. Ads on the list don't bother me. They used to, but I figured if they don't bother Art - and apparently they don't - then they don't bother me. In fact, I would like to see MORE ads, from those dealers who have nice material but rarely, if ever, place ads. I get tired of seeing the same old "begging for bids" on ebay type ads from same dealers week after week. Hi folks, thanks for all the feedback re the SOHO video. There were more failures than success. I guess it comes down to codecs. What a bugger. I used windows movie maker to glue the clips together, I could not stop it from changing the aspect ratio. It seemed the best at leaving the resolution alone. Does anyone know of a good movie clip joiner that is free ?? I'll try again, as well as placing the original NASA SOHO files online. Cheers, Kevin. VK3UKF. ORIGINAL FILE COMPLAINTS Hi Kevin, It comes into Netscape as a text file. Chauncey - It doen't work for me, I just get various strange letter characters. I usr Firefox though so that could be the problem. When I use IE my Real Player loads and I see the sun but the movie only plays about 1/10 and quits. David Kevin, I manually saved the .wmv file to my hard drive (9K file). Attempted to manually play video, with no success. Given my previous attempt, it may be that the file downloaded OK, it just didn't play. Dave Hi Kevin, It does not download for me (obvious, it doesn't play since it hasn't downloaded). Regards, Dave Hi Kevin, download works fine, and it plays OK, but it´s a bit too fast playing to recognize details. And I didn´t figure out how to slowmotion it yet. Greetings Stefan All I got was a very long page of html-like jibberish code...like chinese writting. Dave F. Hello, Downloaded the file fine. Double-clicked onthe file, which launched WinAmp (version 5.2). Showed the sun in blue. The slide moved to the right as if the movie was being played, the the image didn't change until the very end when the image when very splotchy with large square blocks similar in texture to the sun, but scattered randomly around the image. Double-clikced the file again, and this time it seemed to run normally with spinning blue sun, spinning yellow sun, spinning orange sun, and the the masked-out sun showing the coronasphere which showed a couple of "puffs" on the left just before the end of the movie. Every time I run it now it works fine. Only had a problem the first time I ran it. Hope this helps. Mark Abbott Kevin, It seemed like it was loading but Windows media player would not play it. Well said, Adam. Second, let me add my $0.02. As a new collector, I'm continually looking at the people in this community to determine who the players are. I'm especially careful to analyze the people I buy meteorites from. Is he/she reliable? Does he/she have integrity? I do so, because as you all well know, a collector had better have faith in anyone selling him or her meteroites or you might just as well go out and buy that $3M "Martian" rock that was classified via a "vision". This list is a great place to evaluate people. Adam keyed in on one such evaluation item (for me at least) i.e. "breaking a promise". This list has rules. Most of the list members follow them. Those that don't, at least in my eyes, have lost major integrity points. It's bad enough that people submit multiple ads, however, replying to an ad with an apology and then following with yet more info about your ad is, to my military mind, a biggest ploy to insert yet another ad --- NO CLASS If you can't follow a simple rule like placing an AD only once a week, why should I or any other buyer EVER think that you would be straight forward with me in any sale? A rhetorical question - How many other members of this list either conciously or subconciously feel the same way? Those of you who can't or won't follow the rules may want to think about that. FWIW, just my opinion. After asking for input from subscribers, he set the rule realizing the List would soon turn into a spamfest without it. If he thought it was important enough to make this rule, then users who post to this List should abide by it, after all, it is Art's creation. As members of this Forum, users agreed to post advertisements only once a week. Those who post ads more than once a week are going against something they agreed to, breaking a promise. How can people who break promises ever be trusted to do the right thing? Please show some respect to Art and those involved in the consensus. There are probably 20 different users posting ads once a week with a couple thinking they are above the rules posting two or more. If everybody posted three to seven times, then 60 to 140 ads would have to be waded through each week, a true spamfest! Over advertising in this type of environment will only serve to turn off the audience nullifying the affect. If those who break this rule think they are somehow special, are above everybody else and these rules do not apply to them, let them gain permission from Art otherwise they should be called on breaking a promise. Re: [meteorite-list] enough already
I have to say that I am finding this "sucking up" to art and talking about "respect for him" and such is very amusing. By publicly spamming the list with complaints rather than complain to art in private I am suspicious that certain individuals are trying to make themselves look "holy" rather than trying to solve an actual problem. This is especially amusing given that last year before the one a week "Big steve and matteo" rule came into effect art publicly said that he didnt care and only put the rule in place after more complaint emails were received than Steve and matteo sent in the first place. That being said there comes a point where enough sale postings is enough. After all, do one really need to advertise ebay auctions 5 times a week to the same people (And Steve, think about it, you are offering the same rocks twice a day - are you really getting enough sales on each new posting to make it worthwhile - and at the same time compensate for the ill will you are generating and lost sales because of that). Before this new "Big Steve and Matteo" rule came into effect things went nicely. People who regularly sent a lot of sale postings (A group that includes myself, farmer, the hupes, cottingham, blood, bob and others as well as people who post less regularly) did send regular sale postings and while certain people didnt like it (Steve shooner comes to mind) nobody was really upset at the number of sale postings. It was only after Steve and matteo went a bit (OK, more than a bit) overboard that people started complaining. This whole thing is an isolated problem. However, the one a week rule (Assuming one religiously followed it) causes new problems that affects not only dealers but other list members. Everybody (Except Steve and Matteo) made postings that were spread out and not overly irritating and was often done to announce new offerings. For example, me and other dealers who get moroccan stuff would make more postings after trips, Blood makes more marketing postings before Tucson about his auctions ect but then you rarely hear from him. Even matteo announced a new martian a couple times. These sale postings are more than sale postings (Sometimes) and many list members are interested in these new announcements even if they are not nterested in buying. For example if some dealer announces a new lunar or achondrite having a sale with the announcement makes sense. And if somebody reading the announcement and looks at the new pictures of a new meteorite (And many dealers make stunning photos of their meteorites which interests a lot of people) it would be considered normal in almost any industry to have to sit through an ad to learn about it. You have to sit through an ad to watch a video on cnn.com or on TV for example. Is it really fair for example to limit blood to one ad a week before a major meteorite event in february (when he needs a dozen postings as he asks for submissions, updates to the sale, logistics on how to submit auctions or find the venue ect) when you rarely hear from him (With sale postings) the rest of the year? Before I left Canada I had a lot of postings as I was liquidating stuff (Including once a "Third day in a row" sale which ironically drew complaints of spamming from matteo) and dealers coming from morocco or after tucson, munich or ensisheim advertsiing new things that they acquired. Many list members are interested in these postings. And many are also interested in new ebay listings. The delete button is very useful and deleting an extra 4 pieces of spam a day when you usually get dozens is not such a big hassle. But the new "One a week Big Steve and Matteo rule" is making this more difficult if everyone if religiously followed and reduces the overall value of the list. Matteo said earlier today that he "Prefers 2 a week". I am sure nobody would complain if it was indeed "2 a week". He probably does that now anyway and nobody complains or even notices. I would also expect more sale postings made around the time of the big shows. Of course this is Arts list and he can make whatever rules he wants but the new rule was made due to lots of complaints about big steve and matteos dozens of postings and more than the dealers making the postings are suffering. Art has pretty much ignored this violation and unless somebody groosely violates it (Like steve this week) I doubt Art cares to much. But if one wants to complain complain to art - not to the other 600 members who dont have the power to change anything anyway - postings that has alraedy generated more hard feeings than steves postings ever did. What do you expect to acompolish by complaining to the other 600 list members anyway? I suspect that one is trying to make themselves look "holy" as complaining to Art would be the actual intelligent thing to do. Hi List, The list of addresses could be a subset of our original list of meteorite dealers. But bots collect all addresses on a page, not just some of the addresses. http://www.meteorite.com/dealer_list.htm The addresses did not come from our new Meteorite Dealers YellowPages because not all have added their sites yet. http://www.meteoritetimes.com/meteorite-dealers.htm This on one of the advantages of the Yellowpages because each dealer is in control of their listing and can decide if they want their e-mail address listed or not. Re: [meteorite-list] An unusual spam post
That is interesting Ron. I dont know if its somehow related but I have recently been receiving an unusually large amount of spam of this sort lately (Although more often trying to steal ebay or paypal passwords). I have noticed a HUGE increase the last couple weeks and am running well over 100 spam messages a day. Probably a lot more than that. I get about 25 a day from ebay user precisionlaptops4u asking for the postage cost to a certain zip code for example. On a completely different note one of my customers told me a month ago that he made a posting to the met list in november and he was afterwards swamped with a lot of spam. It might have been coincidental but he dont post anymore. You think somebody might be singling out meteorite people to harass with spam? Thats a very suspicious list that you have there. However the address on the list for me is not one that I use to post to the list so if it is its a list that was put together in a very time consuming way and not a robot taking emails of the web. Like somebody took the email of meteorite related people off websites. I believe Jim Strope is good at tracing isp codes so maybe we should ask him if he can trace where the email actually came from although there are still ways of faking that. I used to have some extremily good software for this that would show bounces all over the world but lost it when I reformated my hard drive once. Sincerely DEAN --- "R. N. März 2006 19:07 An: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Betreff: [meteorite-list] Spamfest 2006 Dear List, Art carefully thought about the direction of this List and asked for a consensus before making the once a week advertisement rule. Re: [meteorite-list] Spamfest 2006
Dear Adam and List, First... [meteorite-list] Spamfest 2006
Dear List, Art carefully thought about the direction of this List and asked for a consensus before making the once a week advertisement rule. AW: [meteorite-list] Empty quarter expedition
Hi Joseph, List, I don't appreciate Professor Albert Matter's assertion about Oman: "Collectors though, he said, had robbed the desert of its heritage simply for money and not for scientific research." Bad style. The "collecors" always did an excellent fieldwork there, meticulously recording and documenting all find data, different from the NWA-situation. With the retrieved coordinates strewnfields could be mapped (also that, where the Suisse team found their Mars later), innumerable samples of exotic and common types were made accessible to labs, and that at no costs, all in all an invaluable gain for research and science. The private hunting teams did all this without any financial support and with high financial risks. Until 2 years ago, the Omanis demonstrated no increased concern in their meteorites at all and issued export permits for the stones too. If Prof.Matter took exception to other teams hunting there, he should have earlier cared for the restrictions to become operative, which should have been possible as the Suisse universities are working together with the Omani for more than 30 years. Though, if this would have been a service rendered to science and research, I personally strongly doubt. I haven't the data of the Suisse finds (anywhere a list available?), but I read that all their expeditions from 2001-2003 resulted in a mere number of only 200 different meteorites. The parallely hunting private teams were ways more successful. If I take a look on the score card for lunaites from Oman, I find there the SaU 169 found by the Suisse expeditions with 206 grams, while the depredators recovered 11 different Moons in Oman with a total weight of 3956 grams, meaning that with the for the classification required deposit material, they made available for research 3 or 4 times more lunar material from much more different falls than the Suisse teams did and this again at no costs. The records for Martians: Suisse teams: 1 - 233g; Private teams: 3 - 12,084g (I chose Mars&Moon as examples, because they were highlighted on the websites in Switzerland, but I guess with other rare types the ratios will be similar). Unfortunately the publications database of the University of Bern is out of order ( http://www.geo.unibe.ch/english/scientificworks.htm ), but in past they had there no remorse to carry out research and analysis on such "robbed" "heritage" like NWA-meteorites (e.g. NWA 031, NWA 773, NWA 176, DaG 262 or even stones from Oman found by commercial hunters like e.g. Dhofar 081.) Also in the collection of the Natural History Museum of Bern, are found several specimens fitting to Prof.Matter's accusation, as there are held samples of Acfers, NWAs, DaGs and from Oman SaU 005 and Dho 378, all not found by the Suisse teams. (Btw. Prof.Matters seems to have no concerns about commercialism, when he's publishing in the GeoArabia journal, which is sponsored by such corporations like BP, Shell, Chevron, ExxonMobil, Total, Saudi Aramco.) I can understand, that Prof.Matter is furious about the hunters, who nowadays don't respect the newer legal situation in Oman, but this justifies not to disavow and to criminalize the hunting teams, which were active before, with such an undifferentiated statement in public. He should rather demonstrate the respect, which is due to the other teams with their enormous quantity and quality of finds, which they made accessible for research. I don't want to impute petty jealousies to him, that the other teams were much more successful or that because of the long cooperation between Suisse and Omani institutions he might tend to think that all finds should have been researched by the university of Bern, really not, and I'm sure that if he looks a little bit back in the history of meteoritics and also to other countries than Oman in present, then he will recognise, that with exception of the Antarctic meteorites practically all meteorites where brought to light and were delivered to science almost solely by private individuals and initiatives. I thought that this hollow and artificial conflict about private hunting vs. institutional research was negotiated long ago, and I really wonder that this issue is rehashed again. But perhaps he was misquoted (I can't imagine, that a professional meteoricist with his knowledge and insights would launch such a silly statement)? In this case my mail here would be of course unfonded and meaningless. If I were in the place of Prof.Matter I gladly would invite professional hunters, who demonstrated in past, that they are better trained and skilled than the Suisse team members in finding and recognizing rare types in the field, to join the Suisse expeditions. This would be the most promising solution. The Suisse team's finding quota would raise remarkably, the found meteorites would be completely reserved to research and as the hunters should be remunerated by contracts, they wouldn't have to throw away their finds below costs as it happe
