Re: [meteorite-list] International shipping isssues

2006-04-02 Thread Göran Axelsson
This is mostly from my memory so spelling and details could be wrong but
this is as close I get without spending a lot time searching the net.

I have bought a lot of minerals and meteorites from a seller in Spain
and the time it takes to send a parcel from Spain to Sweden is remarcable.
The Spanish post offers two services Rapido and Economique. I had
five parcels sent all in all under a period of one and a half year.
Every time it took the same time, five weeks that was Rapido and
the delay was all inside Spain according to markings on the parcels.

It was also stated at the website that the fast alternative would take
five weeks. The economic alternative would have taken three months. I
never opted for it but I have no doubt that it would take any less than
three months. It seems the Spanish postal system is very reliable...
they keep their promises every time. Very reliable but veeerr slooowww.

 :-)

The longest delay for a parcel from USA to Sweden is seven weeks. That
was a lot of 13 kg NWA meteorites. When it finally arrived It was like a
rock fell off my heart... or should that be a meteorite fall.

Usually I avoid sending packages and letters between Sweden and USA
during december and january unless it is registered. I have had several
ordinary letters dissapearing during the holiday season.

Re: [meteorite-list] A little bit of a Deep Impact article

2006-04-02 Thread Larry Lebofsky
Hi Darren:

There were 5 or 6 articles that were released early by Space Daily. It is
not unusual for an article to be sent to the press, but embargoed until after
the journal comes out or the paper is given at a conference. It gives the
press time to do a little of their own background searching in case they want
to add something to their own article or do an interview prior to the official
release of the news item. This was the case here. So, it has nothing to do
with the quality of the results, it was just that Space Daily jumped the gun
in releasing the article.

2006-04-02 Thread MexicoDoug
Hola Darren,
Looks like someone at Space Daily didn't realize it is Space Weekly when
dealing with the unionized press corps. It says it was an error and implies
anyone promulgating it not a nice person, until the sindicated embargo Tuesday
night is lifted. I guess we are only bottom feeders in the knowledge chain:)

Thanks to you, now I'll be blue in the face waiting to see if this is hot air
or cold fusion:

Mercury's Formation Impact Splattered Earth With Material
Leicester, UK (SPX) Mar 31, 2006 - New computer simulations of Mercury's
formation show the fate of material blasted out into space when a large
proto-planet collided with a giant asteroid 4.5 billion years ago.

http://www.spacedaily.com/reports/Mercurys_Formation_Impact_Splattered_Earth_W
ith_Material.html

which was another boo-boo by Space Daily that self destructed in the
cache...until de-embargoed at the same time...

Saludos, Doug

2006-04-02 Thread Michael Farmer
Steve, I am a tad confused. Two days ago you listed the number of meteorites
in your collection, and said that NONE of them would ever be traded or sold.
24 hours later, you are trading one of them. Please stop making those
statements since you and we all know they are not true. It is a waste of
time for us all. You are free to do with your pieces what you want, I would
never question that, just tired of hearing the same old things day in and
day out.
