[meteorite-list] Offers pour in for Didim rock
http://www.voicesnewspaper.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=490 Offers pour in for Didim rock Posted on Saturday, February 10 @ 17:54:57 EET by editor COLLECTORS from as far as America have offered astronomical prices to get their hands on the famous meteor of Didim. The meteor was claimed by Abdullah Arýtürk when it rocketed to earth and landed at the Green Park complex, in Yeþilkent, last Thursday, after scores of people across the Bodrum Peninsula reported to police a ball of fire across the sky. Since the story broke, first by Voices, across Turkey and the rest of the world, Arýtürk has been overwhelmed with offers for a part of the meteorite. Arýtürk, not eager to part from his meteor of which he thinks to be a present from God, solved the problem by splitting it into two. He now will keep one half of the meteor in a special cage made for it; and the other half is for sale! American collector Robert Wesel, who read the news in Voices has offered Arýtürk 1,800 dollars. Another American collector Stephan Grossman offered 500 dollars to buy the meteor. We interviewed Abdullah Arýtürk at his house. Arýtürk said that he slept with the meteor at nights and that it was a present from God. Arýtürk stated that he would evaluate the claims but because he could not part with his beloved meteor he had split it in two. He said: I will have a special cage made for this meteor and keep it there until my last breath. A lot of people around me have told me to sell it, but Ý am unable to spare it. Ý wanted at least half of it to stay with me. The drama unfolded when a substance resembling a ball of fire was seen in the sky above Bodrum Güllük Gulf and Didim. The gendarme and police were overwhelmed with notification calls and the worried farmers had waited outside for hours. The Astronomy and Space Sciences Department of Ege University made an announcement stating the possibility of this being a meteor and later it was certainly determined as that. The news published on the front pages of the national papers had caused great excitement and fear all over Turkey. Following the news being released first in Voices and then in national press, Arýtürk started getting astronomical bids for the meteor that in the end, he finally turned his phone off. Cheap talk? Re: [meteorite-list] TUCSON AUCTION BID RESULTS
Dear list members, Due to interest in auction results, a lack of resistance to same on the part of dealers and in the interest of accuracy, the on line catalog now lists ALL FINAL BID PRICES. (The list is just below the catalog photos and listed items). I am human and there could be errors, but I believe all the prices listed are accurate. I will leave the results up through February. Re: [meteorite-list] www.venusmeteorite.com - what are your opinions on this claim
Hi Randall and the List, This guy has spent a lot of time testing his rocks. His samples look very terrestrial to me. I do not recognize any flight markings. He states that the escape velocity of Venus is less than Earth, but he does not explain how an impactor makes it to the surface through the very dense atmosphere on Venus. He also does not explain how the Venusian material is accelerated enough to get back out through that same very dense atmosphere. Looks pretty unlikely to me from an engineering perspective. I would be interested in hearing from others more versed in astronomy, geology and meteoritics. When you are working behind the scenes at an auction it really is rather intimidating. It becomes readily apparent that there are any number of situations that could occur that could have an adverse impact on the auction. On the other hand, it was truely amazing to see the processes and controls Mike has in play to counteract these potential threats and ensure a good auction. Mike does make the auction process look easy, but that is due to his professionalism and hundreds of hours of hard work on his part both before, during, and after the auction. Please don't ever think that putting together and managing any auction is easy. It should be noted that one of the things I mentioned may have been at play in Al's auction "results" is that he apparently did not mention the absentee bids at the auction, itself. This apparently contributed mightily to the inaccurate reports of prices, including Mike Farmer's report. In my own auction I always "bid for" the absentee bidder or have someone else do so, so the crowd in the room can bid against him (and they usually outbid him). In any event, the final price is always declared at the auction and the bidding number for absentee bidders is always in the 200s, making it clear to anyone awake that the winner was an absentee bidder. Someone commented to the effect that putting together a well organized auction of 100 pieces was child's play. They obviously have never put together an auction. In any event, I will be posting results in the immediate future, since I do not want false results posted and there has been a lack of negative response to this issue. Personally, I always would have preferred to do so - though I saw negatives in doing so, the plusses outnumbered the negatives - and in light of recent events and inaccurate rumors of prices, it is the thing to do to be clear to everyone everything is on the up and up. (I can only be responsible for my own auction, of course). Re: [meteorite-list] meteorwrong stories
Hi Pamela and list, Interesting stories. Thanks, Pamela. Here is one from China. One guy told me that he found a meteorite and wanted to sell it to me. I answered him Ok, but required him to make an identification first. The identification needed a cutted slice weighted 30 grams or so, then the man said, he said: the testing must be free for him and besides, i must pay $500 first for the testing slice. Jesus, i declined. Best to all Miss Ma Lan Beijing China Ma Lan 113 South Building No.5 Yongan Street Xuanwu District Beijing, China 100050 Food fight? Enjoy some healthy debate in the Yahoo! [meteorite-list] TUSCON AUCTIONS
Dean said it best. I've been around auctions since I was a kid as well. The terms of any auction should be clear in advance. If you don't take the responsibility of educating yourself you're asking for trouble. The shame on me thing. This by no means gives the auctioneer the right to sock you. Lang is accused for the first time I've heard, of jerking people around, other than the lang/hupe/garza stuff and Lang never bothered to tell his side of that here. The Hupes have jumped him pretty well for obvious reasons. All auction results are public in most states. If an auctioneer doesn't want to share results, you write them down and record it yourself. You can't be restricted from doing so and sharing the results. The Langs post public ADS here all the time. I expect them to at least answer these questions in public. One more thing. What is the big deal about running an auction with a little over a hundred lots? I don't care what the quality may be. Anyone that can screw up an auction that small is challenged.
