[meteorite-list] AD - New NWA 4679, Carbonaceous CK4, Special Sale

2007-02-16 Thread Gi-po Meteorites
Hello List,

we would like to introduce our new Meteorite NWA 4679.
It's an rare CK4, very interesting and beautiful material. The
classification
of it is in progress, but it's for sure that it's an CK4.

Here are the data we have:

Name: NWA 4679 (provisional)
Class CK4
Shockgrade: S2
Weathering: W3
TKW: 735g.

More data will follow, we will publish them later at our website.

The meteorite shows nice big clasts, probably of a higher petrological
type, CK5.
Some slices we offer show big barred chondrules, not often seen in
carbonaceous chondrites!

Today we start a special sale of this rare material, the price is
between $15-$18/g. This is only for this
special sale.

All slices are cut very thin, big surface in relation to the weight!

Take a look here:

http://www.gi-po.de/ebayfolder/shop/carbopre/carbo.htm

Don't miss this one!

Thanks for looking.

Carsten.

Re: [meteorite-list] Mesosiderite?

2007-02-16 Thread dean bessey
It could be the mesosiderite that is floating around
morocco and sold under lots of different NWA names but
its hard to tell from your photo which is a bit
blurry.
See my ebay auction #190083328614 and 190083293199
which has better photos that you can compare yours to.
The second one of my auctions is an unusually nice
specimen of this mesosiderite and most are like the
first photo. You occasionally find big chunks of metal
also.
If you have a strong rare earth magnet you will notice
that the mesosiderite is much more strongly magnetic
than an H chondrite also. So much more strongly
magnetic that you wouldent really mistake one for the
other.
Hope this helps
Cheers

[meteorite-list] Just a thought about NWA classification numbers

2007-02-16 Thread STARSANDSCOPES
Hi list, Naming meteorites after their fall/find location seems to be
working well. If a new find is made in the location under most circumstances,
it
is accepted as being paired to the previously found material. It is quite
different with the numbers assigned to NWA finds.

The total NWA numbers have come to represent not the separate find locations
and thus the different material types but rather, some where between the
total finds and the number of stones collected. NWA 2965/2828/4295 and at
least
ten more numbers is a good example. No one knows what is paired with what
any more and to make maters worse, some dealers look at the assigned NWA
number as their private property. If they get let's say 25 kilo out of a 250
kilo
find and have their pile classified, there is resistance to accepting the
other material of the find is even the same. You go get your own number and
promote it your self is the line all secondary persons are meet with. It is
my understanding that the assignment of NWA numbers was not developed to
protect individual dealers exclusionary ownership rights.

There is not an adequate system for correction of information on NWA finds.
If I were to have material, seemingly paired to an existing NWA number,
let's say it's distinctive in some way and wanted the weight included under
the
already existing number. Labs refuse to retest what is likely just a pairing.

To pair a meteorite by the original classification lab is not as involved as
a new classification. If a lab performed the initial classification, it
should come with an obligation to acknowledge or discount pairing questions.
This would go a long way to help clean up the great NWA stone count.

[meteorite-list] To all my past Mesosiderite purchasers: NWA4576

2007-02-16 Thread dean bessey
Since gary had a mesosiderite question I thought that
it would be an opportune time to inform everybody who
bought my mesosiderite that I now have a name. My
apologies for this posting to those who never but
there must be at least 3 or 4 dozen or more list
members who have bought the un-named mesosiderite from
me over the past several years. Like pretty much all
dealers I have been selling the mesosiderite for
several years and I have been promising everybody that
I would get them a name although never got around to
doing it. Most people I assume either got their own
NWA name, used another or just plain dont care as
everybody knows that all the NWA mesosiderites are all
paired.
Anyway, as promised if you bought a mesosiderite from
me you now have an official name to call it by. It
will appear in the next met bulletin as NWA4576 and
you can use that name. TKW will be listed as around 30
kilos but of course everybody who is not trying to lie
about the TKW knows that what they are selling is part
of around 200 kilos in total TKW and in reality the
entire fall should be known by one NWA number anyway.
Cheers

[meteorite-list] Steve Schoner's Potter TS + 1.2 gr slice

2007-02-16 Thread bernd . pauli
Hello List,

I'm glad that Steve's Potter, Nebraska (L6 with L5 components) thin section
has finally made it across the Big Pond and through the German Customs net.
It took only three weeks ... oh well, sigh!

I can highly recommend Steve's thin sections. My Potter TS is accurately ground
to 30 microns so that the olivines and pyroxenes display the proper interference
colors.

The quality of the glass Steve uses for his thin sections is better than what
we sometimes get from professional labs and I mean professional!

I love such combos: meteorite + meteorite TS. The 1.2-gram slice is of
exactly the same shape as the TS itself making for interesting comparisons.

Looks like an H chondrite. Maybe an H-5 or 6.
Could do a thin section of it to tell which type.

Hey Gary, with regard to your meso-question that is really a good idea. Why
not send specimen material to Steve and have a thin section made. This would
surely clear things up and shed light on your high-metal meteorite!

Thank you, Steve, for this TS and keep up the good work!

Best wishes,

Bernd

[meteorite-list] Carsten's amazing new CK4 NWA 4679

2007-02-16 Thread bernd . pauli
Whenever I tell myself or promise my wife no further meteorite purchases
in the near future, another exotic, unique, must have critter from space
descends on me and shatters such solemn promises.

This CK4 is unique in at least two respects:

- it features dark subrounded clasts virtually devoid of chondrules
- some slices show what seems to be a conspicuous BO chondrule.

So far, so good, NWA 1560 and NWA 1563 have well developed BO
chondrules, too, ... but: their diameters range from 0.5 to 2 mm, whereas
this BO chondrule in NWA 4679 has a whopping diameter in excess of
10 mm! This is what J.C. Bridges calls a macrochondrule ( 5 mm in diameter)

Whadda a meteorite! The 8.0 gram slice is mine :-)

Cheers,

Bernd

Gang,

It'll be fun to see who can type fastest when it is
posted with a $0.01 Buy-it-now!!

Regarding the fusion crust, I have been shopping for a
nice Tatahouine, and I have been surprised at how many
little fragments actually do have tiny patches of
fusion crust. It's mostly at a hand-lens scale, but
more often than not, there is a bit present.

Cheers (and fast typing!)

Good evening list. After finally taking time to
 really
look at my new 62 gram tatahouine,I see it is
 covered
with 50% black fusion crust. It is simply amazing.I
have seen many sizes of tatahouine in the last 5
years, but NEVER have I seen a beaut with this much
fusion crust.I think I got a GREAT DEAL and somehow
this one just got away.I wish my camera could take
real close up's of this beauty, but the one on my
website will have to do for now. This piece is just
amazing.Oh and please ignore the last post. That one
 got away from me.

It is rare to find any crust on Tatahouines.
But it does happen, and then the crust is not black but ash-gray.

[meteorite-list] EL3 Fossil Image

2007-02-16 Thread Adam Hupe
Dear List,

Here is a link to an awesome image provided by the
scientists responsible for classifying the fossil EL3
meteorite. They encouraged me to post this to the List
so that all good see how heterogeneous this meteorite
really is. This meteorite is so variable that every
piece is appreciated and helped to tell the complete
story. Without dealers sending in so many pieces for
pairing purposes, the true importance of this
meteorite may not have been realized. I was also told
that no pieces were ever turned away by either the
University of Washington or NAU for classification or
pairing purposes.

Best Regards,

Adam

Good Evening Folks...

Last night I set-up a temporary website and added a few lovely pieces to the
gallery. Although I am still having some issues with the the site itself
(sizing, ect), it will suit my basic needs until I can design something more
spectacular. Please take a look at your leisure at let me know if anything
interests you. Perhaps we can set up a deal.

[meteorite-list] Ad Illinois Meteorites

2007-02-16 Thread Bill
Hi all,

Interesting for those of us that care about Illinois meteorites. Joe certainly
works hard. I never really thought about how difficult it is to buy a specimen
from Illinois until I tried. I can't find any offerings for anything other than
PF.

The latest fireworks in SW Central got me all worked up.

Anybody got a piece? Offline of course ;)

Bill
