I heard on the news tonight that the residents had a 20 minute warning to seek
shelter. If they didn't have an early warning system, or it happened a few
hours later while everyone was asleep, I think that there would have been a
thousand dead people and not around a dozen. I'm shocked by how little loss of
life there was, seeing how total the destruction was.

Hi All,

this is really devastating.
Poor people in Greensburg!
I am sure this group will make a difference by helping out in whatever way
one can.

This is truly a great community!

And to the meteorite, this is a story to be told after all this tragedy is
over.

Has it been found yet?
It looks to me also that it sits right next to the stand on the image.

With best regards,

[meteorite-list] Greensburg, Kansas Update

2007-05-06 Thread MARK BOSTICK

Hello all,

Greensburg was closed off from it's residents again today, while workers
started the process of cleaning up and continued the search for bodies. The
weather did not let up, raining hail on the rescue workers.

The residents were told they would be able to enter the town today but
officials changed their mind because of debris spread about during last
night's storm.

To enter the town tomorrow you must have proof of ownership, although others
can come with you.

This may be why the meteorite is lost, no one has been allowed to find it
where Steve noted it may be, on the flooralthough I have not heard that
the meteorite is missing on KAKE, despite perhaps 40 hrs. of local news
coverage.

The rain has been a problem and another storm is forming and coming up from
Oklahoma. Kansas is starting to have some flooding problems, which if there
is a bright side to that, I do not think Greensburg is in any trouble in
that regard.

I am confident we will rebuild Greensburg.

I think you're right about that lower object. And another brown blob just
behind and to the right of the stand could be the buffalo skin:

2007-05-06 Thread Sterling K. Webb
Hi, All,

Maria Haas's original post on relief efforts had
a message from Steve Arnold appended to it that
hasn't appeared separately on the List.

In it, he says:
"On a side note, if you go here:
http://www.kansas.com/static/slides/050507tornadoaerials/
In photo #12, is the picture of the twisted water tower,
and the Big Well building that housed the 1,000 pound
meteorite. You can see what I think is the oak stand
(about 2 feet high and 3 feet wide, possibly tipped
over) that the 1,000 pound meteorite had sat on (in
the center of the frame, about 1/6 of the way up
from the bottom). If I am not mistaken, I think
the meteorite is the brown object on the floor just
to the right of the stand."

I can't of anybody more qualified to recognize
a big Brenham, so maybe it hasn't gone very far.

I wouldn't expect theft-- yet. A chaotic situation known about only minutes

and transportation (even if only a engine-block lifter and a big pickup)
doesn't

(from a meteorite perspective, not to belittle all the other human an

which
would be much more easily lost and much harder to find.

Speaking of, anyone have photos of the other meteorite collection, as

[meteorite-list] Greensburg Fundraiser - IMPORTANT

2007-05-06 Thread Notkin

Dear Listees:

The international Meteorite Community joined together in the fall of
2005 to raise an amazing $12,437.49 for victims of the Hurricane
Katrina tragedy. All of those funds were donated to the Red Cross for
disaster relief work in and around New Orleans.

As you well know, the small Kansas farm town of Greensburg was largely
destroyed on Friday evening and we're asking you to join in and help
us, once again, with another fundraiser.

Greensburg isn't just any town. Steve "Brenham" Arnold has (or had) a
home there, and he and his colleagues have made many real friends in
the area. Greensburg is the nearest sizeable town to the Brenham
strewnfield, and it was our temporary home while filming the "Cash and
Treasures" and "Wired Science" TV shows. For decades it has been home
to H.O. Stockwell's mighty 1,000-lb Brenham meteorite find, a charming
local museum, and many hardworking rural farming families.

Kiowa County has been very good to Steve, myself, many of our
colleagues, and to the meteorite community, and we intend to help them
now in their hour of need. To that end we are putting together a
fundraiser and are looking at some form of charity raffle. We will be
asking for donations of meteorites and meteorite-related items for that
raffle. Donations and contributions are tax deductible.

We are also asking for cash donations, and those donations will count
towards raffle tickets, or similar. The people in Greensburg need help
NOW and so we ask any concerned parties to send what they can today and
we'll work out the details (raffle tickets, etc.) later.

Maria Haas, who impeccably managed our fundraisers for the Schiff
family and the Branch family will once again be handling all of the
finances. You can PayPal funds to her now at: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

. . . or email her at the same address to request her mailing address
if you wish to send a check or money order.

Our man in Wichita, Mark Bostick, is coordinating locally and -- along
with Steve -- looking at the most effective ways to get funds into the
hands of people who need assistance. I will be putting together a
comprehensive web page with donated items for the raffle and other info
related to the effort.

We already have over $500 pledged, and that was just from the first
three people who stepped up (thank you Sonny and Chicago Steve). Please
contribute anything you can to Maria, and send donations (meteorites,
etc.) for the raffle to me -- or better yet, take a nice photo and
email that to me. We'll let you know where to send the actual item(s)
later.

More details as we get them.

Yours respectfully,

Greensburg Fundraiser 2007

[meteorite-list] 2007 WGMS Rock Show Recap

2007-05-06 Thread MARK BOSTICK

Hello all,

Thought I would post a little recap on how our local meteorite themed rock
show went.

Show attendance was an all-time record, beating the last high by over 500
people. Attendance to programs where 4-5 times the normal, Steve's was the
most packed, standing room only, while the Kansas Meteorite Society
presentation was a close second. We filled all the seats, Steve just had an
overflow. Usually only the first couple rows of seats have bodies in them.
The common belief in the upped attendance, meteorites.

I sat as an expert during Steve’s and the KMS presentation, the later I was
wearing my Renaissance costume, barely made it back in time, which seemed to
entertain the general public. I took my sword off ahead of time.

The McPherson Museum had a very nice display, and their curator, a man
excited about meteorites and Nininger in his mid 20’s, was a pleasure to
meet. I am sure we will work with them in the future.

John Schooler and his wife had an extremely large selection of hard to find
macro and micro mounts, as well as many fine minerals and fossils. He also
set up a very nice educational display. Check out his website if you have
the time. (www.schoolersinc.com)

The Big Well was at the show the first three days. We formed a partnership
with them to help make peridot from the pallasite meteorite the state
gemstone. The museum had since been collecting signatures and according to
an e-mail dated the evening of the tornado (to fellow KMS member Jerry
Calbert), everything was going well on their end. I have not heard from
anyone since and hope no one was in the building when it was hit.

At the show we put a ballot box on our table, and were interviewed by a
local television network, which made the evening news.

The Lake Afton Observatory , brought a nice collection of different Kansas
meteorites along with samples of basic meteorite classes. There program went
well.

Don Stimpson had a small display and sold samples of his meteorites. He
also had two meteorite postcards he made which I know will interest some of
you, such as Mike Jensen. These had a circle on them like an old popular
Meteor Crater postcard where Don put a piece of the meteorite….prices
varied.

The KMS had a display including the Wichita meteorite.

In fact the show was such a success that we are likely going to squeeze
meteorites into the next show as well. We are thinking of going with the
peridot gemstone theme for it….meaning could change anytime.

The Wichita Gem and Mineral Society in general has turned us into some of
it's star members, we have led or have been a part of pretty much all public
programs, advertisement, press releases and the like, since joining them.
With the WGMS connections, the Kansas Meteorite Society has had a larger
radio and television appearance, so this has been a win-win combination.

Thanks again to those that helped a little behind the scene and thanks to
those that attended..

[meteorite-list] Tornado snatches 1, 000 pound pallasite meteorite

2007-05-06 Thread Mike Fowler
It could be tough to find. If a dense rock like that was in a field
and a
tornado went directly over it, it probably would not have moved at
all.
However, it was suspended in a building of comparably much lighter
material

with a large surface area. Collectively, when the building was ripped
apart, it could have been launched a considerable distance. Having
virtually
no aerodynamic properties It is most likely within a 1/2 mile
radius of
where it was originally housed. It may even be embedded in the soft
earth.

I agree with Charlie. I don't think it would be moved much, if any.
I think a wind greater than the terminal velocity of the object in
free fall would be needed to lift it, and that would be several
hundred miles per hour. If it is truly missing, I would be willing
to bet on theft.

2007-05-06 Thread Michael Farmer
In reading the article, it is clear that it is not a
meteorite, but some sort of gas explosion. It says the
school was engulfed when a ball of fire fell on it,
causing a massive explosion which threw debris all
over the area. A meteorite will not do that.

Hello all,

Rescue workers are back at the scene today. The weather still does not look
good, but we are no longer in full time weather coverage. More heavy
thunderstorms on the way in the Greensburg region, and other portions of
Kansas, which makes flooding a big threat at the moment.

Mal Bishop asked "My question is; how should I ask people to donate, or
where to send

donations? Could someone set up a special PayPal account to collect funds
for the relief, or should we just send donations to one of the list members
such as Maria, Mark, Steve, Geoff, or someone else?"

Interesting choice of names. The four of us, and others have been bouncing
e-mails.

Maria Haas noted: Our intent right now is to get some funds down there
quickly. In the next day or so we will finalize the details and let you know
about a fundraising raffle we are planning. It will be similar to the one
Geoff did for Katrina. Those of you who donate funds prior to us working out
the details will be included in the raffle.

msn.com. For those of you who prefer not to
use PayPal, you can send donations to me directly: Maria Haas, 410 Spring
Street, Saline, MI 48176."

So, we are going to have a Meteorite Community Greensburg Raffle. I will be
launching a web page shortly. Donations can besent to Maria, who will later
send out the items to the Raffle winners.

Sonny added "I would offer some slice of new Nevada meteorites for the
auction and a cash donation. We could have Steve and Mark place the money as
needed to the residents of Greensburg."

I am not sure if Steve will make into Kansas within the next few days or so.
I can, of course, make my way over. Currently the place is I believe
somewhat locked up, and it was a ghost town yesterday except for resue
workers. A curfew was inforced until 9 or 10 this morning.

Anyway, I would like to thank everyone for their help with this, especially
our charity expects, Maria Hass and Geoff Notkin. As well as Sonny for
helping spur us together.

Stay tuned for more updates

An update from Steve follows:

Sent: Saturday, May 05, 2007 8:47 PM

Hello All,

It has been a strange day. I have been scouring the internet to try to
get a glimpse of my house in Greensburg in pictures and aerial videos.
Not to sound selfish, but if my house is gone, there would be less of a
need for me to get up there right away... or then again, their might be
more of a reason to get up there.

My hope has been that since I haven't seen it in any of the really bad
pictures, that is a good sign, as the media likes to show off the worst
of things.

If my house is intact, enough that people could live in it, there is no
need for me to be in the house long term, when someone else could
occupy it, someone that totally lost their home, or someone involved
directly in the relief effort.

If anyone cares, my home (or at least the lot) is at 302 S. Maple,
Greensburg Kansas 67054. Go to:

www.mapquest.com

and you will see the street lay out of Greensburg. Then go here:

http://www.kansas.com/static/video/050507greensburg/

Watch the video, and at the 46 second mark, the street corner nearest
the bottom right corner of the frame is Cedar and Wisconsin. My house
is one block to the East (right) from that corner, on the south east
corner (Maple and Wisconsin).

The camera breaks, without panning any further East. My house should be
less than a 1/2 block off the screen. The houses start to look better
and there are even green leaves on the trees a block from my house.

So there is a bit of optimism that my house might be ok. I have some
very nice neighbors all around me, one in a mobile home, which is
always of greater concern during tornados.

As for the fundraiser, I want to support it, 100%, but before I commit
to doing anything specific with my time and efforts, I would like to
get up there and see what is going on and find out if I can help on
site. If someone else could handle the coordination of running the
fundraiser and let me make inputs and suggestions, that would be best
for now.

My suggestions at this point as to how we could help, lean in two
directions.

First, Barclay College hosted the Meteorite Festival, and now they are
the Rescue Shelter for most of Greensburg's families. Of course much
of the supplies and volunteers that will help there will be supplied by
other people and groups such as the Red Cross.

Barclay College is a religious institution, and as such some people
might be more inclined to want to route funds that way as they are an
on site not-for-profit that - trust me - is giving 100% to this effort.
On the other hand, some people might not want to route funds through
them because they are religious in nature. In any case, that is one
suggestion I would highly make as they would know exactly where to put
the funds to the best use.

The other might be a little more close to home with some of us. I
don't know the situation that Bob and Florence Peck are in, as they are
not yet listed on the Red Cross's Safe list. (There is no list of
deceased or injured people made public, go figure!). The Peck's live
on the north side of Greensburg, as Steve Schoner mentioned, on 308 E.
Pennsylvania, and by the video, odds are very good their home took a
direct hit.

Bob Peck is the son of Ellis Peck, the author of "Space Rocks and
Buffalo Grass" and when he was 18 years old, the job of actually
digging the famous 1,000 poun

lives back together which admittedly is, I feel, not a priority as just
making one day to the next their overwhelming challenge at present.

I spoke with my 8 year old son, Gabriel, regarding the destruction, and he
came up with the idea of writing a letter to his school principal,
teachers, and classmates regarding this
tragedy and asking if they wouldn't mind donating whatever they can to help
the good people in the Greensburg area. I'm also planning on emailing
family and friends to ask them

if they would do the same.

My question is; how should I ask people to donate, or where to send
donations? Could someone set up a special PayPal account to collect funds
for the relief, or should we just send donations to one of the list members
such as Maria, Mark, Steve, Geoff, or someone else? I know they could send
their donations to the Red Cross of course, but does anyone have a more
direct ( i.e., more personal and maybe more efficient) way of sending funds
to hopefully/possibly be of more immediate help to those in greatest need?

With warm regards to all,
Mal

[meteorite-list] Fwd: Sorry Direct Link for CNN survey for $2 donoted to charity of your choice

2007-05-06 Thread drtanuki
Dear List,
I have tested this link since the last link did not
work. If you live OUTSIDE of the US (Asia and Europe)
you may participate in a CNN online survey (takes
about 3 mins) and CNN will donate $2 to a charity of
your choice, Red Cross, Unicef or WWF.
This is an easy way to help out to benefit someone
in need such as the people in Greensburg.

http://survey.euro.confirmit.com/wix1/p55853314.aspx?cnn=1

If you have already taken this survey or if something
happens while you are taking it you will need to
delete your cookies from this site.
Thank you all for taking 3 mins to reach out a make
a difference. Please forward this offer on to friends
and family. Even 600 people can generate $1200 for
aid. Their offer expires May 13th. Thanks
  Best Always, Dirk Ross...Tokyo

Incredible, what happened there. The tornado meanwhile is in European
headlines as well.

Wish all of you all the best. Take good care.

Hello list,

As many, other then just Steve Schoner, where interested in the Peck
family, I thought I would post a message that Robert posted on the Red
Cross website.

"Family and I are safe and well.
Currently at friend/family member/neighbor's house."
