For years this topic has come up regularly as people
try and get cubes for size.
Whats wrong with using a coin in your photo for size?
Everybody knows what the size of a USA 10 and 25 cent
coin is but if not I am sure somebody would send you
one or you could get one at a local coin store or when
travelling. Everybody knows somebody from the USA.
Then you could get a collection of a half dozen EU and
australian coins to compare if somebody really wants
to take sizes into account so as to cover all bases.
Or if that is to much why is a centimeter cube somehow
better than a centimeter ruler? (Which everybody
already has).
This centimeter cube fetish thing is a solution
looking for a problem. Save yourself hassle and use a
ruler or a coin. People will get the idea of the size
of whatever it is that you are selling.

Hello all

I have a couple kilos of Chinga slices that need to be tuned up. If anyone

Re: [meteorite-list] Centimeter Cubes

2007-06-09 Thread Drake

Good point, and I agree. But, I have a slightly different motive. I have
wanted to get one ever since I saw one in the news papers when they
announced possible fossilized bacteria in the Mars rock. (ALH1983??)
This was years before I started collecting meteorites.

I do failure analysis and many of my papers are peer reviewed. Placing a
quarter or a scale (AKA ruler) on or near a fracture/failure has always
been my MO. But, it's always looked, well, kind of cheap. ...at least
for a paper that is being published. Having a centimeter cube will add a
bit of professionalism to my profession.

The other thing it does (in my profession) is that if I want to show the
bottom or particular side of the failed object, I can orientate the cube
with the position of the object. Hence, my need for the T, B, N, S, E,
and W. This helps with the lay-person reading my papers. Most
non-scientists only read my conclusion and look at the pictures.

Picture Caption:
Failed bolt pictured next to centimeter cube. Catastrophic overload
bending moment is in the W direction. Fracture origin is at E

I did find one and it's being shipped now. However, I became so
frustrated in my search that I sent out an RFQ to several gauge makers.
I'm going to have a bunch of them made for my peers and give them out as
Christmas presents.

Oh, yeah, The work for meteorites too. :-)

Chunk of Meteorite Stolen from Russian Museum

9 June 2007, Saturday

A chunk of a meteorite weighing over 7 kilograms has been stolen from a museum
in the remote Magadan Region in Russia's Far East on Saturday.

A local Interior Ministry spokesperson explained the thieves broke into a
history museum in the village of Seimchan at night and stole a part of the
meteorite named after the residential place.

It is supposed that the offenders have been inspired by a recent TV program,
which discussed the high value of meteorite pieces on Russia's black market.

The Seimchan meteorite was found in 1967 near the Seimchan gold mine in the
Magadan Region.

The local police authorities are still investigating the case.

Hmm, what they mean Russia's (meteorite) black market ?
Selling meteorites in Russia is illegal ? I hear that only exporting is
forbidden. Black market meteorites can't be more expensive than specimens
legaly owned and for example Seymchan is not very rare (read difficult to
buy), so that person must be very desperated or he not think long about this
where he will now sell his new specimen.

Interesting, if it's true, then one can see, which effects can be yielded by
the often so hopelessly exaggerated figures about the value of meteorites
the laypeople in media or even some scientists from time to time are
hawking.

If the thieves would have known, that such a piece would cost let's say
3000$ only, then maybe they would thought twice, whether it would be worth
to break into that museum.

risk their lives cutting power lines just for a few dollars worth of copper to

[meteorite-list] Water you talking about?

2007-06-09 Thread Darren Garrison
http://space.newscientist.com/article/dn12026-mars-rover-finds-puddles-on-the-planets-surface.html

Mars rover finds puddles on the planet's surface
15:33 08 June 2007
NewScientist.com news service
David Chandler

http://space.newscientist.com/data/images/ns/cms/dn12026/dn12026-2_283.jpg

A new analysis of pictures taken by the exploration rover Opportunity reveals
what appear to be small ponds of liquid water on the surface of Mars.

The report identifies specific spots that appear to have contained liquid water
two years ago, when Opportunity was exploring a crater called Endurance. It is a
highly controversial claim, as many scientists believe that liquid water cannot
exist on the surface of Mars today because of the planet’s thin atmosphere.

If confirmed, the existence of such ponds would significantly boost the odds
that living organisms could survive on or near the surface of Mars, says
physicist Ron Levin, the report's lead author, who works in advanced image
processing at the aerospace company Lockheed Martin in Arizona.

Along with fellow Lockheed engineer Daniel Lyddy, Levin used images from the Jet
Propulsion Laboratory's website. The resulting stereoscopic reconstructions,
made from paired images from the Opportunity rover's twin cameras, show bluish
features that look perfectly flat. The surfaces are so smooth that the computer
could not find any surface details within those areas to match up between the
two images.

The imaging shows that the areas occupy the lowest parts of the terrain. They
also appear transparent: some features, which Levin says may be submerged rocks
or pebbles, can be seen below the plane of the smooth surface.

Smooth surface
The smoothness and transparency of the features could suggest either water or
very clear ice, Levin says.

The surface is incredibly smooth, and the edges are in a plane and all at the
same altitude, he says. If they were ice or some other material, they'd show
wear and tear over the surface, there would be rubble or sand or something.

His report was presented at a conference of the Institute of Electrical and
Electronics Engineers, and will be published later this year in the institute's
proceedings.

No signs of liquid water have been observed directly from cameras on the surface
before. Reports last year pointed to the existence of gullies on crater walls
where water appears to have flowed in the last few years, as shown in images
taken from orbit, but those are short-lived flows, which are thought to have
frozen over almost immediately.

Speedy evaporation?
Levin and other reasearchers, including JPL's Michael Hecht, have published
calculations showing the possibility of micro-environments where water could
linger, but the idea remains controversial.

“The temperatures get plenty warm enough, but the Mars atmosphere is essentially
a vacuum, says Phil Christensen of Arizona State University, developer of the
Mars rovers' mini-Thermal Emission Spectrometers. That means any water or ice
exposed on the surface evaporates or sublimes away almost instantly, he says.

But, he adds, it is theoretically possible to get liquid water within soil, or
under other very special conditions. The question is just how special those
conditions need to be, and whether they ever really are found on Mars today.

If there were absolutely no wind, says Christensen, you might build up a
stagnant layer of vapour above a liquid surface, preventing it from evaporating
too fast. “The problem is, there are winds on Mars… In the real world, I think
it's virtually impossible, he told New Scientist.

Simple test
Levin disagrees. He says his analysis shows that there can be wind-free
environments at certain times of day in certain protected locations. He thinks
that could apply to these small depressions inside the sheltered bowl of
Endurance crater, at midday in the Martian summer.

He adds that highly briny water, as is probably found on Mars, could be stable
even at much lower temperatures.

Although the rover is now miles away from this site, Levin proposes a simple
test that would prove the presence of liquid if similar features are found: use
the rover's drill on the surface of the flat area. If it is ice, or any solid
material, the drill will leave unmistakable markings, but if it is liquid there
should be no trace of the drill's activity.

Levin’s father Gilbert was principal investigator of an experiment on the Viking
Mars lander, which found evidence for life on the planet, although negative
results from a separate test for organic materials led most scientists to doubt
the evidence for biology.

liquid water ponds on the Martian surface (2007 IEEE Aerospace Applications
Conference Proceedings, paper #1376, to be published in IEEE Xplore)

Hi, Paul, List,

Thanks again to Paul for pointing this out. ALL
of Vol. 256 is worth having; at least I thought so. It
contains some very interesting pieces about Tektites.
Also, take a look at 1998's Vol. 140 (edited by
Monica Grady) entitled Meteorites: Flux with Time
and Impact Effects, also worth having all of.
http://sp.lyellcollection.org/content/vol140/issue1/

Apparently, The Geological Society, London
is putting themselves on line, all of their history of
publication, all their books, etc. It will cost you
to use it, but they are testing (or advertising) the
site as they build it, by allowing free access up
through June 18. Yes, there IS a free lunch, at
least for a while.

I've been making a pig out myself at the free
food tables: four books, over a gigbyte, but had
one bandwidth enough and time, there seems to
be a library of many more gigabytes. For example,
if you interested in fossils (and I know there are
fossil-people on the List), Vol. 217 is Evolution
and Palaeobiology of Pterosaurs. Vol. 199 is on
The Early Earth.

I would feel bad about urging the looting of
of a temporarily free resource, but the day that
any real damage is done by the frantic stampede
to acquire knowledge is probably a day none
of us will ever live to see.

Re: [meteorite-list] Queensland post from down under

2007-06-09 Thread Michael L Blood
Hi everyone,
I got the following from Bob Walker who is
apparently having trouble posting to the list:
--

Done a biggish update to the QMIG website

http://www.members.optusnet.com.au/qwalkra2/
http://www.members.optusnet.com.au/qwalkra2/

Can you do me a favour and post to the list that there is a update with
main mass pictures and thin section pictures of the Birdsville Seven - ie
the 7 new finds from Birdsville (Queensland AUSTRALIA) - next update should
have piccies of the cut faces of the Birdsville Seven

I have also put up a piccie of the cut and etched face of GLENORMISTON

Next update should be better pictures of the new seven from the Tenham
strewnfield - JCU has kicked off the project to put these thru nomcom and
hmmm prob a month before I get thin section piccies of these tho prob more
piccies of the stones and cut faces earlier

Can u let the list know I'm getting damn close to getting all the
Queenslanders - some of the last few I am missing will be swapped/traded in
return for lodgement of type specimens

WHITULA CREEK is the only one that is eluding me - surely one of the listees
must have some and be willing to swapntrade or even just provide some photos

The pocket-guide on Queensland meteorites should be out by the end of the
year - it will focus on photographs and short articles with a particular
focus on thin section pictures - I'd like to think that Whitula Creek would
be in the book but if not so be it but a shame nevertheless

Re: [meteorite-list] Global Warming - Scientifically proven or a farce

2007-06-09 Thread Michael L Blood
Hi Rob,
I am usually able to waylay any strong feelings posts
might arouse in me. However, when talking about the survival
of not only everyone I love, but of the majority of life forms on
the planet it becomes a little more difficult for me to keep my
feelings in check. However, I will try.
I strongly suggest that if you have ANY belief in the
scientific process at all that you examine the following:

1) The history and current movement WORLD WIDE by
the vast majority of scientists as expressed in the United
Nations After years of denial of scientific evidence, finally
a treaty was negotiated in Kyoto, Japan in December 1997.
Of the 173 recognized countries on the planet, only 3 were
and continue to be hold outs - of course, under King George,
the US is one of them.
(Clinton was guilty in spite of the urging of his vice
president, as he always, always, always pursued the action
that was politically most favorable)
From this you can see that 98.3% of the various countries
have chosen to head the warnings of their scientists on this matter.

2) Do at least a LITTLE research on the scientific reports that
were requested by and sent to the current administration - and
then ALTERED by said administration the number of former
advisors who have resigned as a result of the bull headed refusal
of the administration to accept the truth, even when research
was conducted by their own scientific advisors.

3) See Burk's Before the Warming (Made in the early 1990s,
it is scary how exactly, as scientifically predicted, the results
of global warmiing have progressed thus far.

4) See An Inconvenient Truth.

I am confident that you are intelligent and sane enough
that, once having reflected upon the above, any reluctance to
see the evidence in this matter will be gone.
If, after reviewing the above, anyone remains unconvinced,
I suggest they buy an ostrich ranch as that way they will be
among those who are equally like minded and scientifically
aware.
Sincerely, Michael Blood

Re: [meteorite-list] Global Warming - Scientifically proven ora farce

2007-06-09 Thread Michael Farmer
Why would you say it is not man-made? Lets see,
Phoenix, HUGE city of millions of poeple, 30 miles
across, and now during the summer it ofter stays ABOVE
100 degree F as the nightly low! The endless asphalt,
millions of cars, etc, make huge brown clouds that
cover Tucson, 100 miles away often. The temps there
have risen dramatically over the last few years,
coinsiding with massive population growth and
unrestrained grading of the desert to put up more
strip malls. If you think that these actions can do
anything but change the weather, you are wrong.

Global warming is man-made, and only a true idiot
would stand there and deny what he can see in front of
him. Only right-wing nutjobs deny the facts and
spout crap like Left-wing liberal to make a point.
How is that guy Bush doing these days, it seems that
he is in the leper colony right now, with an approval
rating lower than that of the historical piece of crap
criminal Nixon, so I am not sure I would bring up
politics on here, just science and facts please.

It isn't as clear cut as that. First off, I'm not claiming to be an expert on
the Sahara desert, I'm just tossing ideas around. But if there was a heating of
the Sahara 13k years ago, that'd be local warming (even though it is a fairly
big location) and wouldn't necessarily say anything about global temperatures.
Plus, desertification could mean not changes in temperature, but changes in rain
patterns-- 13k years ago, the Sahara could have been a 100 degree grassland that
became a 100 degree desert. Humans could have cut down trees and burned off
ground cover, allowing soil to blow away and moisture to no longer be held in
the ground. And once a desert starts, it tends to grow, with blown sand
covering bordering vegitation, killing it, slowly expanding it. And you could
even theorize desert expansion with a COOLING atmosphere-- cooler air holds less
moisture and evaporates less from ocean/lake surfaces, so there is the
possibility of dryer areas in the world with a cooling trend (and the
theoretical possibility of global warming making some areas of the world greener
with increased rainfall). So desert formation may or may not say something
important about overall warming trends, and it may or may not say something
about human causes.

Look at the US dust bowl, which, because of human farming practices, was pretty
darn close to desertification:

[meteorite-list] AD - 238 Gram Libyan Glass

2007-06-09 Thread David Kitt Deyarmin
I won this on ebay and hopped it would be big enough to make a 50mm sphere
but unfortunately it wasn't

So I figured I would offer it for sale to this list before I tried to
re-ebay it.

I am asking $100 plus shipping for it which is very close to what I paid.

This is a very nice piece of glass, it has great anatomy and it displays
well, if I collected whole specimens I would keep this one.

Here are 4 pictures of it
