Re: [meteorite-list] lunar meteorites from the farside

2007-07-26 Thread Randy Korotev

At 20:53 24-07-07 Tuesday, you wrote:

Thank you David. I didn't want to sound so
skeptical. Remote sensing suggests is what I was refering to.
I definitely want to believe that farside rocks
are in my possession. Just need some returned specimens for confirmation.

Jerry, and list:

To the best of my knowledge, about half of the
lunar meteorites come from the farside and the
other half from the nearside. (And, with a bow
to Jim Strope, that means that half come from
DARK side and the other half from the not-dark
side.) I have heard no arguments that strongly
challenge the assumption lunar meteorites come
from randomly distributed locations on the Moon,
except for the one below. That one is irrelevant
to us in that any point on the Moon is in the
trailing half half half of the time. [If I
misunderstand this, please let me know.]

On the basis of dynamical modeling calculations,
Gladman et al. (1995) make the following
statements [with my comments in square brackets]:

The earth should be uniformly covered with lunar
meteorites [!], and there is no bias for or
against Antarctica on dynamical grounds [!!]...

We thus conclude that the discovery location on
the Earth imparts no information as to where on
the Moon a lunar meteorite was
launched. Nevertheless Fig. 4 demonstrates that
objects launched with high velocity (more than
2.6 km/sec [lunar escape velocity is 2.4 km/sec])
have an extreme bias toward coming from the
trailing half of the lunar surface if those
particles are delivered to Earth without ever
escaping geocentric orbit. [Some lunar
meteoroids meteorites go into heliocentric orbit, however.]

If the 4[pi] CRE [cosmic-ray exposure] of an
object could be shown to be only a few days [it
can't] (so that the meteorite arrived via
direct transfer), then one might be able to
deduce more, especially if the ejection velocity
and angle were known... Since such information is
unlikely to be available [correct!], we must
conclude that dynamics can do little to narrow
down the source regions of lunar meteorites.

So, theory doesn't help us.

It has become fashionable, if not expected, in
scientific papers about new lunar meteorites to
speculate about where on the Moon a meteorite is
likely to have originated. I've done it
myself. The truth, however, is that we do not
know with certainty where ANY given lunar
meteorite comes from. All of the statement in
the literature by geochemists and geologists are
based on a few observations and some assumptions:

1) The high-thorium region of the Moon (the
PKT) is on the nearside. There are no high-Th
regions on the farside, although the SPA (South
Pole-Aiken) region is a bit enriched in
Th. Therefore, if a lunar meteorite has high
concentrations of Th, then it most likely comes
from the nearside. I'd say this assumption has a
99+% chance of being correct for SaU 169 and NWA
4472/4485. Gnos et al. (2004) speculate about
the exact crater for SaU 169, but it is just
speculation. We have studied samples from the
Apollo 12 missions that are indistinguishable
from SaU 169, and that site is 450 km from the
crater advocated by Gnos et al. (They still might
be right, however.) I used to think that
Calcalong Creek originated from the PKT, too, but
now that we've obtained our own analysis of
Calcalong Creek (which is not the focus of
abstract, below), we note that it and Dhofar 961
have some funny geochemical characteristics
that suggest to me that they ARE NOT from
anywhere near the Apollo sites, which were all on
the nearside. That makes it more likely (but
hard to quantify) that they come from the SPA
area and, therefore, the farside.

http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meetings/metsoc2007/pdf/5257.pdf

2) There are more maria (the dark eyes or
seas) on the nearside, and the maria are rich
in iron because the maria consist of basalt. So,
a given basaltic lunar meteorite is most likely
to come from the nearside than the
farside. However, there are also maria on the
farside, so maybe one or two of the basaltic
meteorites originates from the farside.

The first lunar meteorite, ALHA 81005, was low in
iron and thorium. That led me (for example!) to
state The low LIL [large-ion-lithophile, like
thorium] element concentrations of 81005 are
consistent with an origin distant from the
KREEP-rich Imbrium-Procellarum region [PKT,
Apollo sites], possibly on the lunar farside
(Korotev et al., 1983). Others said the same
thing (it wasn't really a profound observation)
and have continued to say so about new lunar
meteorites because the statement sounds
neat. Now, about half the lunar meteorites are,
in fact, feldspathic and low in iron and thorium.

http://meteorites.wustl.edu/lunar/chemclass/chemclass.htm

Because a larger fraction of the farside real
estate is low in iron and thorium, more than half
of the feldspathic lunar meteorites probably DO
come from the farside. We just

Betreff: [meteorite-list] Cali, Colombia meteorite tidbit

I am up now at 5 am, preparing to leave Colombia in a
couple of hours, typing with my broken glasses on, so
forgive any typos please, it is hard for me to see
this morning. My glasses I use when my contacts are
out got stepped on in Sweden and I never did get time
enough at home to repair them.

I should make it home tonight if I can make tight
airline connections, as I changed my ticket, and so I
would expect tomorrow to being having photos uploaded
and a page began. I have hundreds of photos and maps
to try and deal with, so bear with me on that one.

As of now, 22 days after the fall, there are only 7
stones found. I do not expect much more if any to be
found, as the streets (like in Park Forest) would be
pretty much the only places suitable for hunting. We
did that for hours yesterday and unfortunately due to
torrential rains and spotty street sweeping, most are
already lost to the sewers. When it rains in the
jungle, let me tell you, it pours!
The total weight recovered is barely 300-350 grams. I

know that there are likely many kilos on the ground,
but when I post the maps, you will understand that it
is all in the canefields and garbage dump. And
considering that terrain, absolutely impossible to
hunt, and the danger to life and limb there, forget
it. I think some more might be found in the streets,
but that chance dwindles by the hour as rain and
cleaning dump them all in the sewer, and that area
that is populated is where the strewnfield began, so
only small stones there.

Here is a list of stones with estimated weights (I
left in such a rush that I forgot my scales, but then
again, in the drug capital of the world, scales might
be viewed as something of interest for the customs
agents).

Cali 001 ~80 grams, roof smasher, sold to a Spanish
scientist.

Cali 002 ~40-50 grams, roof smasher, I have the main
mass and the metal roof which Robert and I cut out.
Much of the stone was lost as police took some

fragments and no report, and one week of attempts to
locate that material were in vain.

Cali 003 ~40 grams, complete stone, ~99 % crusted.
Roof smasher and fridge denter, now owned by Robert
Ward.

Cali 004 ~120 grams, roof smasher, ~70% complete, some
frags missing from impact with roof and top of cement
wall. I own this one and some of the damaged tile
material. The hole was large and the tile panel over 1
meter long. We were attempting to get it last night,
but absolutely impossibe to get within 5 miles of that
neighborhood at night and it did not work out.

Cali 005 ~12 grams, 90% complete stone, found in
street a few days after the fall.

Cali 006 ~6 grams, fusion crusted fragment, found very
close to Cali 0005 in the street gutter, same day as
that stone.

Cali 007, complete stone, ~85% crusted with chips from
being run over by cars and some slight oxidation from
rainfall. Found 8 days after the fall in another
street. Robert and I bought this one last night, for
the highest price I have ever paid for a chondrite.
Astronomical like the Astronomy Clum member who found
it. But well worth it.

That is it folks, we were hoping that the publicity
would bring others forward, and thankfully it did,
that is how I got the Cali 004 stone yesterday, they
saw offers of cash and finally spoke up. After 8 days
of non-stop tv, radio and newspaper interviews, I
think that even that time is passing. Anyone who had a
stone should have already tried to sell it. Of course
calls and emails came pouring in but for junk and
pieces which amazingly fell the same day in FARC
strongholds hundreds of miles from Cali.

More later, but I have a flight to catch, this should
tide you over for a day right?

This morning's newspaper.

This should underscore a problem with personal internet profiles. If
one is known to have money, or a large collection of meteorites which
are very valuable. And if one goes to a dangerous area such as
Columbia, cocaine capital of the world, and internet savey, they put
themselves a great risk for exactly what Michael outlined below.

Just think of what could have happened if the gunmen succeeded? They

It takes a lot of grit to go down there and do what they are doing, but
it is probably best to go there with a low internet profile.

Better yet, get contacts down there to assist you. The police

Well, only hours after writing about how unsafe it is
here in the Cali meteorite strewnfield, I now must
write that only two hours ago I had a gun pointed at
me and my friends in an attempted robbery/kidnapping.
Robert and I were with a local astronomy group, in the
barrios where the meteorites fell, and we spent the
morning with two groups of news reporters, one for the
El Pais newspaper, and one for a Colombian national TV
station. We were warned several times to leave the
area by the locals. After doing some interviews and
photo ops hunting and talking with people, we got into
two taxis and left to meet at a place for lunch. I was
with two of the Colombian astronomy club members and
as we tried to drive through a barrio just near where
one of the stones was found, a man ran at the taxi
with a large gun scraming at us to stop. I saw the
people in the front of the taxi duck down and then saw
the gunman running at us. The driver hit the gas and
we swerved around him, but the gun was about 1 meter
from my head.
He did not fire thank god, but what a scare, we
quickly tried to get out of the neigborhood and told
police who ran to the place but we have no idea what
happened later. We just fled.
We are done here, it is clearly not safe enough to
stay, Robert and I both have collection pieces, and
having a gun near your head is enough to know when to
call it even and go home.
I am a little shook up right now, will write more
about the meteorite later today or tonight. I already
have a flight home tomorrow morning and plan to get
out of Dodge as fast as possible. Those of you who
don't hunt meteorites should appreciate the danger
that those of us who do hunt, face in some of these
countries.

[meteorite-list] NASA 'Sabotage'

From Orlando Sentinel

NASA reports sabotage of computer by worker who cut wires
Marcia Dunn
The Associated Press

July 26, 2007, 4:51 PM EDT

CAPE CANAVERAL -- A space program worker deliberately damaged a
computer that is supposed to fly aboard shuttle Endeavour in less than
two weeks, an act of sabotage that was caught before the equipment was
loaded onto the spaceship, NASA said today.

The unidentified employee, who works for a NASA subcontractor, cut
wires inside the computer that is supposed to be delivered to the
international space station by Endeavour, said Bill Gerstenmaier,
NASA's space operations chief. The worker also damaged a similar
computer that was not meant to fly to space.

The sabotage occurred outside Florida. Gerstenmaier did not identify
the subcontractor or where the damage took place.

NASA's inspector general office is investigating.

NASA hopes to fix the computer and launch it Aug. 7 as planned aboard
Endeavour. The computer is designed for use aboard the space station,
not the shuttle, and the damage would have posed no danger to either
shuttle or station astronauts, Gerstenmaier said.

Re: [meteorite-list] Cali, Colombia meteorite tidbit

2007-07-26 Thread Alexander Seidel
My Spanish is poor (3 yrs at school, but then again this is more
than 35 yrs ago!), so I tried an Altavista Babelfish translation
from Spanish to English, and got an idea of what the Colombian
newspapers wrote this and the other day.

Thank you, Mike, for the messages, and have a good and safe trip
home with your companion Robert Ward. I bet your families will be
more than glad to see you back home again!

que oscila entre $500.000 y $2.500.000 cada una.

Is this a hint to what any later commercial offers might be..?? :-)
Well, just kidding. Welcome home, as you read this - you may be on
a plane right now at this moment,
