I agree with Keith. This cube is a wonderful specimen that shows
better than ordinary (not that meteorites are ordinary) slices. The
real shame in meteorite specimen processing over cutting. This cube
could have been cut into several slices but some one decided to
preserve it as a cube.

[meteorite-list] A few nice pieces for sale

2008-02-04 Thread Jeff Kuyken
G'day all,

I need to pay some bills and also help fund a project I'm working on at the
moment so I'm offering a few of my more favourite pieces for sale. I never
had any intention to sell these but they're first on "the list"! ;-) The
pieces are:

*NWA 2892 (H/L3): "The Chondrule Conglomerate" - 5.52g Complete Slice.
*Pallasovka (Pallasite) 700g Partslice. (Was actually "Monthly Favourite" a
few months ago.)
* NWA 2734 - 277.2g (Unclassified Main Mass + Sliced Type Specimen For
Study)

Please email off-list for any questions or queries.

Cheers,

Good Morning All,

Dave you are so right and so new! ;-)
We had many back and forth squabbles on this list and many of us just moaned to

But at the end we are all still on it, well some got tired of them I guess, but
at the end we are still all here and keep on staying and reading the good

So I guess at the end we do all appreciate each other and this is wonderful.
If you were to go to Tucson you would see how friendly every one is and how

I think even Matteo from Italy would have a few friends. ;-)

Have a nice day,

[meteorite-list] Cape York / Re: Keith's Tucson Meteorite of the Day

2008-02-04 Thread Darryl Pitt

Hi,

I feel a need to "weigh-in" here.

--Keith has (gratefully) embraced the role of the posting of images
which enthrall. This is not about Keith---pro or con---it's about
whether a Cape York cube should exist.

--While i nearly always disagree with Matteo's perspective (and I am
about to do so once again), I understand his concern about cubing a
meteorite. It would seem that such concerns should be applied on a
case by case basis, and I believe should not be applied in the case
of Cape York.

For starters, there are how many TONS of Cape York represented in how
many masses?

Moreover, last month I had the pleasure of visiting the Geological
Museum at the University of Copenhagen, and there are multiple ingots
of material which have been subdivided by scientists at the Museum.

I personally believe this is a non issue and a gorgeous representation.

And what about those Giants?!;-)

Obviously true, Christian. And also true in John's note that cubes are
better than slices in some cases due to less kerf waste. I'd imagine most
(if not everyone) who have commented on the 3D aesthetic values also love
spheres for similar reasons. No need to expand on that...

Thanks for all of the insight, and to you, Keith, for getting all of this
rolling with your terrific pictures!

I started this little banter because of a personal attack (one is not

2008-02-04 Thread Dave Gheesling
Your points are right on the money, Martin. I very much agree, and it
surprising to see that there is little-to-no market appreciation in terms of
perceived economic value for this work with irons, particularly slices.
I'll assume that perhaps you would second my point below re: stones, and we
can leave it at that (in fact, a little marketing machine is being ramped up
as we type for a beautiful stone which no doubt will be rolled out to
slaughter in short order, and it will be pathetic to watch).

The only part of my original note that started volleying back and forth was
the point about cutting meteorites and waste. My point had more to do with
the larger picture outlined in the list Policies: be courteous and
professional, no personal attacks, identify ADs properly and limit them to
once per week so as to avoid spamming the group, etc. All good points. All
frequently ignored.

Best regards,

Dave

[meteorite-list] Keith's Tucson Meteorite of the Day

2008-02-04 Thread David & Kitt Deyarmin

As some of you may you I only collect Meteorite Spheres.

Most people seem to appreciate my collection but I've run across a few
people that have demonstrated utter disdain about how I choose to collect.

Personally I think that it's up to each individual to collect in a way that
works for them.

I have no problem with someone not liking my collection but there's a point
when subjective criticism become rude and obnoxious behavior.

IMO, Matteo's comments about this cube tend to be more toward the rude end
of the spectrum.

[meteorite-list] M.C.'s Babb's Mill (Blake's Iron) on EBay

2008-02-04 Thread bernd . pauli
Hello All,

Here is another American classic I couldn't resist yesterday. Well, I had been
watching it for several days already and I had tried to ignore it after I had
recently bought a 0.95-gram partly crusted SNC individual from Marcin and
that terrific SNC slice I got on Ebay from Jim Strope. See here if you haven't
seen it yet:

http://www.rocksfromspace.org/January_19_2008.html

In vain did I try to ignore Babb's Mill, which is also known as Blake's Iron and
not to be confounded with Babb's Mill (Troost's Iron). I had read so often about
these two ataxites, I had seen a picture of the cigar-shaped main mass of
Blake's
Iron in one of my very first books on meteorites (Heide's Kleine
Meteoritenkunde,
1957, p. 80) that I did not want to miss out on an iron I have never before seen
offered (if I remember correctly) since I started collecting meteorites about 25
years ago.

Babb's Mill (Blake's Iron) has a nickel content of 11.8% Ni whereas Troost's
is richer in nickel (17.5%). As the meter-long cigar-shaped mass of Blake's
Iron had been dug up not far from Troost's Iron and as they are both of them
ataxites, Brezina assumed they were one and the same iron. Maybe Christian
or Alex can post a picture of this "cigar" which now resides in the Vienna
collection (weight: 128.7 kg).

The German meteoriticist E. Cohen [hence the name "cohenite" for the carbide
(Fe, Ni)3C] and his coworkers were the first to notice there was a noticeable
difference between both irons in nickel content.

Berwerth (1918) even concluded that Blake's Iron was an artificial product and
thus not meteoritic. But Vagn Buchwald restored its good reputation and showed
that Blake's Iron was definitely of cosmic origin (and completely different from
Troost's Iron).

According to Buchwald, "etched sections display an homogeneous ataxitic
structure
without visible inclusions of troilite, schreibersite, graphite or silicates"
and
"high magnification reveals a polycrystalline mosaic of kamacite and taenite
grains."

But, why don't you look for yourselves if interested. There are still 3
specimens that
Michael Cottingham is offering on EBay. My 0.45-gram slice should now be on its
way
across the Big Pond.

BUCHWALD V.F. (1975) Handbook of Iron Meteorites, Volume 2, pp. 284-285.

Ataxitically yours,

Bernd

Re: [meteorite-list] Being courteous

2008-02-04 Thread Rob McCafferty
In response to Moni's posting

I post here when I want to ask a question.
I've always found the responses well measured and
reasoned. The ONLY exception was my fault and vowed
not to do it again.
Today I pontificate.

I find people as I recieve them and this list has
given friendships, despite never having met the
persons I converse with.

Despite the barriers of nationality, culture and
language, a little courtesy makes it all possible..
Some, it seems, don't care for courtesy. What
difference does it make?...well, let me tell you.

As a predominantly US list, some enthusiasts in the UK
call the the BSL ("Big Scary List").
So far, I can answer any lay question I'm asked but
many UK list enthusiasts are more knowledgable* than I
.
Scaring these people off deprives us of rich variety
and free interpretation.
Exchange of ideas drives knowledge. To be privvy to
the ideas even if we do not make the links is a
priveledge. Let us not admonish the free minded by
creating an atmosphere of contrition.

This great list can be more so.

2008-02-04 Thread Jan Bartels

Listoids,

With very few comments here on the list I also feel the need to respond to
this "cube" story.

It doesn't matter how many slices are added for sale of Cape York,
collectors always love them and pay plenty bucks for them. Now we start
nagging about a cube..?
If this sucker would also be sliced up we probably again will oooeehh and
aaahh about the beauty of them.
Now for those folksjust look at it as a very thick sliceHappy again?

Look, I'm frustrated also for not making it to Tucson this year but at
least I still have a life(can't believe I really said that)

Have a good on you all. Especially for all the jerks who made it to
Tucson, rrrgggrrr..

Hola Bob, E.P., All,
Hardly - the stuff they sell at the Meteor Crater store is shale.
They don't sell real meteorites on-site, though you can find freshly
dug-up irons on ebay from hunters for an average going price of
~$0.30/g.
You'd probably be best-off buying some Odessa nuggets or a lot of
those "Campo crystals" from Hans or another dealer who might have them
for cheaps; those, at least, would be real meteoric iron, and not just
oxide.
Or what about Sikhote shrapnel? That tends to be fairly cheap...
Best of Luck,
Jason
