Re: [meteorite-list] Scame Safety Rules for the Meteorite Collector

2008-02-17 Thread Martin Altmann
Or for those to lazy to learn many rules:

Rule: Look for an IMCA-label in the auction,
if you don't know yet, who the reputable dealers & sellers are.

The chances to get an unauthentic piece from an IMCA-seller is extremely
low, if any problems will appear, IMCA will solve it in a fast, satisfying
and unbureaucratic manner, even if you aren't a member.

Btw. Have you noticed, that it's meanwhile extremely difficult, if not
almost impossible, to find an authentic Nantan offered on ebay by
non-IMCA-members?

Rule 6: don't believe that the firm called ebay will help you, they don't
care, whether an auction is fraudulent or not.

Rule 7 for sellers: If you are forced to use Paypal, never let a penny on
your Paypal-account, it is not safe. Paypal is notorious for acting
illegally.

(At present in Germany thousands of accounts are illegally blocked under
false pretences, and the clients are prompted by Paypal to divulge to Paypal
Ltd. data of third parties (customers, suppliers ect.), hence Paypal is
trying to prompt the account holders to break the actual data protection
laws. These data will be distributed by Paypal to roughly 30 other firms. If
the account holder would hand in these data to Paypal, he risks a fine up to
250,000Euro (367,000$). Therefore don't give Paypal these data, don't
discuss, but tell that you'll file charges and immediately your account will
be unlocked again.)

 Best!
Martin

Betreff: [meteorite-list] Scame Safety Rules for the Meteorite Collector

Hi List. I understand that we as collectors are looking for that "DEAL of a
Lifetime on EBay" Unfortunately there are always that Unforeseen "Pothole",
"Bump in the Road" "Snake in the Grass and that "SCAM of all SCAMMERS" that
we may encounter as Meteorite Collectors, especially if we don" keep our
"GPS" on at ALL TIMES. As a collector/Dealer for many years I will pass on
some no brainier Rules that if you follow them, they may help many of you
(especially novices) avoid that SCAMMER or MISREPRESENTED Deal of a
Lifetime Meteorite!

RULE 1)--- Low Feedback of a Meteorite Seller equals Inexperience! PERIOD!.
My Motto---Less then 100 your gonna get BLUNDERED!

RULE 2)---Stay with the Tried and True. This means Deal ONLY with the those
Top Dealers-Remember their names and their EBay names PERIOD! Don't get me
wrong here. I understand we will have those collectors that occasionally
sell their meteorite (s) so as to upgrade to a bigger piece or who have run
into a financial dilemma. It happens. If that's the case---then--- if no COA

(Certificate of Authenticity) or Proof of Past Purchase from a reputable
source (Original Identification Card, Paperwork ect.) DON'T BID. PERIOD!.
Move on.

RULE 3)--- ASK QUESTIONS! Email the individual. Ask for proof. Ask who they
purchased that piece from. Ask for solid conformation that the piece they
are selling is a confirmed a Meteorite. Have them email/fax a copy of it. If

they can't SUBSTANTIATE-- DON'T NEGOTIATE!!

RULE 4)--- PATIENCE, PATIENCE, PATIENCE. Don't ever feel that this is the
last chance to get a meteorite for that LOW once in a lifetime PRICE!!
Remember "You Get What You Pay For" Shop around! Check out the different
"REPUTABLE METEORITE SITES" and compare prices. It is very easy to fall into

the "Red Flag I'm with Stupid Club" If something seems FISHY-- IT IS!

RULE 5)--- We here on the List are Family. We take care of our Family. If
you see something NOT RIGHT ***REPORT IT*** We have some excellent people
here on this LIST that can smell a Fart in the WIND 4 Miles away!! So Use
this Resource. PERIOD! That is why we are here. If you choose to IGNORE --
Then your cash is out the DOOR!

So in Closing--Keep your eyes open, follow your instincts, and keep that
wallet closed until you know all is legit. Most auctions last 6 days. More
then enough time to research or contact the List to warn and or to avoid a
trip down the road with STUPID and his twin brother STUPID!! If you decide
to join the STUPID CLUB that's your choice. Just don't put that piece of COW

CHIP you purchased back on EBay as all EYES will be watching YOU!!

Sincerely
Don Merchant

I wouldn't trust that as proof. Unless you are a document and handwriting
expert, I'd think a decent fake document printed on a cheap inkjet or color
laser would fool most people. The bar for being able to forge documents is very
low with modern technology.

I believe there is a cluster of falls in late Febuary and also in mid
to late April but I am relying on memory and did this research 10
years ago.

Be it remembered that 3:pm would tend to captuer slower total
velocities comeing away from it's solar pass.

[meteorite-list] an odd inclusion - anyone seen anything like this?

2008-02-17 Thread Phil Morgan

Hello everyone,
I was exploring an unclassified chondrite this afternoon and found this odd
inclusion. Not as bizarre as some of the things Tom finds ( as as good a
picture), but it's a lot bigger :-)

The bright spot is a blob of metal.

It looks like this at 20x
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c57/pkmorgan/share/IMG_2035.jpg

And here it is a bit closer
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c57/pkmorgan/share/weird.jpg

Any ideas or observations?

Regards,
Phil

Re: [meteorite-list] The SkyRock Cafe

2008-02-17 Thread Joe Kerchner
Dave,
I am (The SkyRock Cafe is) offering other topics of interest, Also
a forum to ID stones found while hunting, you can show of hunting
finds rites or wrongs, you can ask questions with out being belittled
by people like you. A few members started out on my site and have now
found authentic meteorites, one in Brazil and one in Australia. and a
few in Az. What do you offer? beside talking shit? Many people
compliment me about the SkyRock Cafe, it is only about once every 6
months I have a jack ass like you trying to bring it down. Why would
you even ask me a question like that? We have many active members,
some who are there everyday, many more are there a few times a week.
So if you do not want to join than just stay away, we will not miss
you, One thing that is not aloud on the forum that always goes on here
on the list are people like you who say things which are meant to
disrespect another meteorite collector/hunter, we have a laid back
atmosphere where you do not need to worry about being disrespected by
jerks like you, that is what the SkyRock Cafe offers that the list
does not.
Best,
Joe Kerchner

[meteorite-list] Fwd: The SkyRock Cafe

2008-02-17 Thread Darryl Pitt

joe, you were respectfully asked a fair question---and in response
you refer to the questioner as "a jackass""a disrespectful jerk"?

it feels as if you misinterpreted the sincerity of what was being
asked. you may also wish to become reacquainted with the notion of
"laid back."
