Re: [meteorite-list] Good By Bush - the nightmare is over

2009-01-21 Thread Sterling K. Webb
Hi,

Knowing full well that it would be wiser to steer
clear of a spot (the List) which is one of the few
places in the United States where a certain good
feeling is not in evidence tonight, I foolishly plunge
right in. I say "good feeling" if for no other reason
than to celebrate a peaceful and lawful transfer of
power that has continued unbroken since 1788,
something rare in the last 220 years of history for
most nations of this Earth.

> violated the Geneva Conventions (emphasis removed)

The Geneva Conventions apply ONLY to the uniformed
armed forces of a nation as well as to members of such
militias or volunteer corps that form part of those armed
forces in a declared war. Do we even have declared wars
anymore?

The Taliban is not a nation. Neither is Al Qaedah. Their
forces are not uniformed. They are not organized by
ranks under superior officers. They do not conduct "their
operations in accordance with the laws and customs of war."
All of these are requirements for the Convention to apply.
Moreover, the nation of which they might be the armed
forces (if there were one) must be a prior signatory to the
Convention. (Afghanistan, even before the Taliban existed,
was not a signatory nation.)

True, a certain President pledged to treat these prisoners
according to the Convention, but I strongly doubt he even
understood what he was saying. The Convention requires,
among other things, that they be "allowed to receive by
post or by any other means individual parcels or collective
shipments containing, in particular, foodstuffs, clothing,
medical supplies and articles of a religious, educational or
recreational character which may meet their needs, including
books, devotional articles, scientific equipment, examination
papers, musical instruments, sports outfits and materials
allowing prisoners of war to pursue their studies or their
cultural activities."

The only thing missing from that list is hi-speed internet
access. The only reason it's missing is that the Conventions
are a century old, are utterly out of touch with reality, have
always been out of touch with reality. However, since the
prisoners currently in question were not uniformed soldiers
of a nation engaged in "lawful war," the whole point is moot.

No soccer uniforms for Al Qaedah, no trombones and violins
for the Gitmo Band and Orchestra, no scientific equipment
and how many pounds of ammonium nitrate was it that you
needed for these science experiments?

Attempting to apply the Geneva Convention to the real
world generates nothing but absurdities. As long ago as
WWII, it was completely out of touch. A spy behind
enemy lines who was not wearing his uniform (and who
would?) could and would be shot summarily, as would
an escaped POW in a civilian suit. Resistance fighters
were terrorists. But the world is not like that anymore.

How does an 18-year-old girl wearing a bomb vest into
a mosque in Iraq fit into the underlying conceptions of
the Geneva Conventions? Or a Saudi grad student highjacking
an airliner and flying it into a building? What does the
Geneva Convention have to say about cutting off hostages'
heads with comic opera swords on video?

As a charge, the issue of the Geneva Convention is entirely
irrelevant. The question of what should have been done, of
what was done and why and how it was done, and how to
resolve it are all vital concerns, but the Geneva Convention
is neither here nor there in that matter. The question of our
policy has to be resolved on its own merit or lack thereof.

And lastly, the Geneva Convention is not a Law; it is a
Treaty, or more precisely a Contract, between the signatory
nations. There are no penalties for "violating" it, and any
nation that is a party to it can withdraw at any time. The
full text of the Convention on Prisoners can be found at:
http://www.unhchr.ch/html/menu3/b/91.htm

Ironically, if the Geneva Convention had been in force in
1776, it would NOT have applied to a rebellion or insurrection
or other treasonous activities carried out within the lawful
territory of a nation (that is, the British Empire) by various
malcontents and purveyors of radical subversive "democratic"
doctrines. In fact, George III declared American combatants
traitors in 1775, denied them any POW status, and ordered
their execution.

Initially, these American terrorists were simply hung, but
once there were British prisoners of the Americans as well,
instant executions stopped. The British solution to the POW
problem was put captured American forces on damaged
or disabled naval vessels anchored off shore and then forget
to feed them. The treatment was sufficiently bad that the
vast majority of all American POW's died of starvation
or disease, in numbers far greater than those killed in actual
combat.

Guantanamo is not good, but it's a lot better than that. In
1782, just before the war ended, American prisoners were
declared legal POW's by the British Parliament. Possibly
this was only because WE captured an entire B

Re: [meteorite-list] Good By Bush - the nightmare is over

2009-01-21 Thread Jason Utas
Hola All,

I think the point of the pro-Obama's is that the (supposedly
quiet/innocent) Bush supporters in this case are simply being
hypocrites. They're telling people to stop posting their opinions and
then including little pro-Bush bits in their messages.

In almost every post, that's been the case. The Obama supporters say
their bit, and then the Bush fellows come out and say "you're wrong to
bring your political views to the list - by the way, you're an idiot,
Bush was good."

Come onare we all kids on here? I'm probably the only one posting
who can lay any claim to that, and I think I'll refrain from the same
rubbish. Hmmm - I will say this, as one who voted - either way, only
time will tell.

   Howard,

I keep reading about how this list is supposed to be just "all about
meteorites", then someone like you prints something hateful and strictly
political and almost no one says a word. I've never been partial to
hypocrisy, so every time I see an email that has *nothing* to do with
meteorites and everything to do with hate, I call the individual on it.
Tell me, Howard, what did your email have to do with the subject of this
list...namely meteorites?
Perhaps it would be OK if once a week or so I were to bring up things of a
political nature that I'd like to air out. Would you like that? Is that OK
with the rest of the list?

[meteorite-list] Don't Feed The Trolls!

2009-01-21 Thread Eric Wichman

/Hi list,

/Though we all do at time respond to idiocy and hypocrisies with logic
in the hopes that somehow they will listen, we forget that they don't
"want" to listen but only deviate topics for their own selfish reasons
and cause hurt feelings, arguments, and all around distasteful remarks
that are terribly off-topic. The old cliche that misery loves company
comes to mind.

Trolls are all about drama and have NOTHING better to do than to create
controversy by being totally vulgar and inappropriate to topic for one
reason. To satisfy their incessant and pathetic obsession for attention
and their addiction to debate. They're lonely, opinionated people who
have been self-ostracized by their own beliefs and relish the attention
their comments receive.

Again...

Don't Feed The Trolls

Jeff, see "Sonny" above.

There's a lot to not like about Dubya but his popularity rating is not as

allocate and approve the money for everything from wars to welfare to
wocket ships to the moon. If they had had any balls, they could have
easily reined in the so-caller criminal regime, but nooo. Even for the
last 2 years in a Democrat controlled congress they couldn't take any
action. Pussies!

Before you all start flaming my mailbox about being off-topic, know that
this post is about meteorites, i.e., space rocks, or, simply, rocks, which
many listees seem to have between their ears.

Get over Bush. Get over Obama. Look forward to getting screwed, blewed,

Re: [meteorite-list] Apology to the List

2009-01-21 Thread Walter Branch

Hello Bernd,

I think it is fairly safe to say that you have nothing to apologize for.

The day of the 9-11 attacks? You were among the first to post what I
thought
was a thoughtful and sympathetic post. Many people did. That post wasn't
meteorite-related but it was appreciated.

I remember a few years ago a certain list member went off on some diatribe
(as he usually did) and after your response, he stopped posting. You did
the list a service then, as you usually do. That post wasn't
meteorite-related either, but it was appreciated.

Nothnig to apologize for. I understood your post for what it was intended
to be, wishing a country well.

Hello All,

Phew, what a shock it was when I read all those mails. I did not
expect to polarize listees and listoids into pro-XY and anti-YX.

"Just don't do it on a List that's devoted to meteorites."

"It only takes *one* to correspond to start the ball rolling"

That *one* was me and I now see I shouldn't have posted that mail.
It was not meteorite-related and presidential elections are a far cry
from meteorites. I just shouldn't have brought it up!

Please, accept my apologies!

I have to second Walter here.
Bernd, you did nothing more than wish our nation well, and I appreciate that.
It was not you that made a political remark, but others and it snowballed.
Too bad that just wishing a country and it's new president well must be taken
and twisted.

[meteorite-list] Reflecting

2009-01-21 Thread Darryl Pitt

Reflecting this morning.

I regret matters spiraled out of control on the list last night, and I
deeply regret my contribution to having inadvertently stoked the
coals. I never imagined such an outcome. When I saw Bernd's warm
congratulatory note to America and Americans, I thought I might
attempt to provide a glimpse of a remarkable aspect of the inaugural
which was entirely non-partisan.

For many Americans, Inauguration Day is the one day of the year that's
not about politics, it's about something so much bigger and it's for
each and every one of us; it's a day where politics should stop and
we can bask in the wonder of our remarkable country.

The most important thing I've learned from seasoned lawyers and
politicians is their ability to be respectful of those who do not
share their point of view. I loved Rick Warren's invocation for its
emphasis on civility---a marker of a true civilization---a marker
which seems to be in want, and not only on our beloved list.

That was all I was really attempting to convey in my post, my having
been witness to a surreal degree of civility.

May it last and grow.

Hello Darryl, Bernd , -

I think both of you have to regret nothing in regard to your posts to the
list from last night.

Darryl, in a spontaneous reaction I've told you how inspiring I found your
report. Of course your lines were off topic. But it was so far more
interesting and moving than so many meteoritically focused posts dedicated
to cause trouble between collectors and dealers, Moroccans and Americans
etc. etc.

Well, and all the following ballyhoo, transforming your enthusiasm
surprisingly into a new battle between "red" and "blue" was "as needless as
a goiter" (German manner of speaking ;-) in such a historical moment -
especially what concerns the new President of the USA who underlined
emphatically the necessarity of non-polarization.

My best,

Bush was not the greatest president. Granted! Very disappointing to say the
least.
But Obama is the greatest thing since sliced bread? So far all I've seen
is that he has great speech writers, he's a good speaker and he knows how to
play the public's emotions.
We will see over the next few years just how good he is for freedom loving
people. Could be he might even be worse then Bush. Who knows for sure? We
will see how great he is for science and space exploration, and the economy,
foreign affairs etc.
We will see how much he is on the side of Freedom, or if he is more of an
authoritarian. I have my suspicions when I see the people he has associated
with in the past, and a few of the people he is appointing to positions of
power.
Is Barack Hussein Obama going to do as much as he can to take America
down the road towards Socialism?
Anyways, here's an interesting story about his family. I hope that
since Obama is a President, he might now help some of the closer relatives
out a bit.

Actually, Mark (Bowling), you're entirely missing *my* point.
I'm not saying that they (viz. the Obama supporters) are right in
posting their views. But they're not doing it and then telling the
Bush supporters to shut up. The Bush supporters are the ones bashing
on people for their views and then saying that posting views at all is
wrong. Then the Obama supporters defend their views, etc.
All you're doing now is pointing your finger and saying "they started
it." But you're just as wrong for replying in the way that you did.
As your mother would undoubtedly say, 'two wrongs don't make a right.'
(And the fact that they hit you first doesn't entitle you to hit them
back.) My point was that maybe you should (or someone should) take
the high road next time. Or you can just say they hit first, and in
so doing, choose to perpetuate the cycle.

[meteorite-list] Ad: Duck pond sale!

2009-01-21 Thread Jeff Krosschell
Hello list,
I am sorry for going off topic last night. My joy had nothing to do with
donkeys or elephants.
I have the most perfect daughter a father could ask for. If I could have
asked for everything I wanted in a child, it still wouldn't have come out as
perfect as she is.
She is the only black person in our family. All of us have spent the last 13
years working to make sure she never feels different. I have been over
protective making sure she is only put only in diverse environments, never
all white, never all black.
A couple months ago we moved her out to the desert in Laughlin, NV and sent
her to school. She came back and nothing. The next day, the same. Today,
she has all the friends a girl could want and never anything about feeling
different or outcast.
Last night my white mother called in tears, my white mother-in-law called in
tears, my father-in-law the same. My wife and I are still overjoyed. But
our daughter doesn't seem to really grasp why.

This list is the best thing since sliced bread!

I have listed over 50 auctions many at .99 cents.

[meteorite-list] OT: New meteorite find

2009-01-21 Thread Stefan Ralew

Dear List,

I`m sorry for posting something meteorite related here on the list.;-)

Please let me show you two pictures of a really amazing new find from the
Sahara, a small single stone with a nice orientation and a fresh black crust
(very light-weight stone). I had to think for a while whether I should cut
this beautiful piece or not. But cutting was worthwhile because the result
was much surprising. The cut surface shows two lithologies, which have a
very sharp border. Its definitely a chondrite, and probably a carbonaceous
chondrite. Enjoy:

The uncut main mass:

The cut surface:

I really like this piece because I suppose that it could be something new.

Awesome specimen. This reminds me of an Allende I had a few years ago that had
two distinct lithologies separated by a melt vein.

Really beautiful Stephan! We can even see through the fusion crust that
there must be two different structures, which of course is clearly shown on
the cut section. The darker side looks like a CV3, but the fair grey one ? I
wonder... Anyway, a great find!

[meteorite-list] Delightfully On-Topic - Re: New meteorite find

2009-01-21 Thread Michael Gilmer
Hi Stefan!

What a wonderful surprise! :)

Every meteorite is like an Easter Egg - there may be a treat inside.
And in this case, the inside is even better than the outside. I can
understand your reluctance to cut it - the crust with it's delicate
textures are lovely enough on their own. Please keep us updated on
the eventual classification of this specimen. I am curious what it
turns out to be. :)

I have a 110gram UNWA that is a whole oriented stone with relatively
fresh crust, but it's so beautiful that I can't bring myself to cut
it. Now I am rethinking that reluctance! ;) LOL

Best regards,

MikeG

[meteorite-list] Update regarding recent fireballs over Scandinavia and Barents Sea

2009-01-21 Thread Thomas Österberg

Hello list!

Apparently, two large bolides have entered the atmosphere over Scandinavia
and Barents Sea in a matter of two days in mid January!

According to a recent newsletter from the Swedish Institute of Space Physics
(IRF), an even larger event took place January 15, over Barents Sea, in an
area between Spitz Bergen and Norway.

Rick McGregor at IRF, would like to suggest a connection between the two
fireballs and the Delta Cancrid- meteor trail. See:

http://www.irf.se/Topical/Other/?newsid=7&group=P2

Below you can find some information regarding the Swedish -Finnish network
of Infra Sound Detectors IRF uses to track incoming meteors and re-entering
rockets over Northern Scandinavia.

Good luck!

[meteorite-list] New meteorite fall Morocco

2009-01-21 Thread Aid Mohamed
Hello list,

I have been to the place the new meteorite fell and I was lucky to find some
pieces myself, you can find pieces from TOURJDALE to OUED AACHIR, the big piece
I can say 20 kg, it was fragments and the nomads were there first and pick it
up, each one has a piece, and I estimated a 20kg largest piece. you can find
small holes in the trajectory of the fall, in the big one we find the sand
burned and mixed with the very small fragments.
You can beleive me, because I was there and these are the photo:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/34600...@n07/
I don't lie or pretend milligrams or hundereds of kilos, more than 50 per cent
of this meteorites are small fragments without crust or have some. I learned on
this list more than 500kg were found, and tents kilos were offered for sale,
and I'm asking for photos of even 500g.

Thank you
 Aid

Re: [meteorite-list] Good By Bush - the nightmare is over

2009-01-21 Thread leandro.sarac...@oacl.net

Hello Bernd and List,
in any civilized group of people, either a Nation or a list, or even a
little sports or social club, I see no reason a gentleman wishing well
to other people must feel the need to apologize for his kind words, if
his words are sincere. They shouldn't irritate anyone who has caught the
right meaning of democracy, even if he/she is on the "loser" side. As to
whether off topic political comments should enter the list, my little
valued opinion is that politics is first of all passion, just like any
other genuine human activity, meteorite
collecting/hunting/selling/studying among the others, so isn't it
forgivable to offer a few lines of our precious internet space to such a
non-meteoritical but rather important event like the USA presidential
election? (sorry in advance for any capital letter I may have missed).
Does it happen sometimes that people in a fishing club do not speak of
the biggest fish and chat about politics? Just a comment or two, to let
us remember that we are still "social animals" able to transfer thoughts
and emotions through the speech, possibly a polite one.
And Mr. Swartz... "idiot" is a moral judgement if you apply it to
evaluate someone's opinion, and moral judgements are something about
even thoughtful philosopher are still pondering. Please remember that
Cynism was not used as a privileged position to offend people.

Just personal opinions, of course. All the best to everyone.

[meteorite-list] AD : Vintage Martian Meteorite Postcards (not reproductions)

2009-01-21 Thread Michael Gilmer
Hi Listees!

My pre-spring cleaning continues

I have 10 (ten) vintage meteorite postcards. These were printed sometime in
the 1980's, but are undated. All of these cards are in
near-mint condition and have not been marked or mailed. These are
perfect for display or framing.

The meteorite shown in the color photo is Elephant Moraine A79001.
At the time of the photo, it did not have it's final classification.
It is a 7.9kg Martian Shergottite. The Met-Soc Bulletin entry can
be found here :

http://tin.er.usgs.gov/meteor/metbull.php?code=10002

On the reverse side of the card is a short paragraph as follows :

"Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas. Meteorite at JSC believed
to be of Martian origin. A meteorite in a dry nitrogen cabinet
undergoes study in the meteorite processing lab at Johnson Space
Center's planetary and earth sciences laboratory. The sample,
designated 79001, was discovered in 1981 by an Antarctic meteorite
recovery team and is thought to be of possible Martian origin."
(official NASA photograph)

Here are 2 photos of the postcard on my Photobucket account :

http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj24/Meteoritethrower/martian-postcard-1.jpg

http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj24/Meteoritethrower/martian-postcard-2.jpg

I am asking $6 each shipped - this price includes shipping to anywhere
in the CONUS. Asking price is $8 for Canadian or Overseas buyers.

There are 10 of these cards available. If someone wants to buy all
10, I will sell them for $48 shipped in the CONUS, or $50 shipped
to Canada/Overseas. Buyers from the Orion-arm are responsible for
paying their own pan-planetary trade tax.

PayPal preferred.

I have to run some errands, so I might not reply right away. But I
will respond to everyone tonight. :)

Thanks for looking!

[meteorite-list] Stefan's New Find

Hello Fred, Stefan and List,

"The darker side looks like a CV3, but the fair grey one?"

The uncut main mass: http://www.chladnis-heirs.com/carb-ungesch.jpg
The cut surface: http://www.chladnis-heirs.com/carb.jpg

Ever since Stefan first showed me this unique specimen in November 2008,
I've been wondering and brooding what this might be. My very first idea was
that this might be a CK-like chondrite, then I thought it might also be some
kind of E-chondrite and from there, it was just another (hypothetical) hop
to the assumption that this could be a Kakangari-like chondrite (???)

What do you think?

[meteorite-list] Apology to the List

2009-01-21 Thread Metorman46
Hello Bernd;

Apology accepted here for one.Meteorite collecting, and the discussions that
are spawned from it is a fabulous thing, hopefully the list will get unwound
and continue on meteorites.Tucson is coming up and i am sure all
meteoriteophiles that will be involved in it are all wound up and need an
outlet.Who knows
it may be a good thing that you opened that outlet for them, time will tell.I
think. The list members are amazing and the list seems to endure all manner
of trials stay in existence, which is good, for us members that really enjoy
the discussions and sales offers and such.I think.

Keep up the good work and get some good deals on meteorite secimens,i hope.

Best Regards;Herman Archer IMCA # 2770.

Re: [meteorite-list] New meteorite fall Morocco

2009-01-21 Thread Pete Pete

Great pictures, Aid!
That is a rocky terrain I've never experienced.

Questions: "Burned sand"? I'd like to see some pictures of that, if possible,
or a detailed verbal description.
Any pictures of impact pits/craters before they were disturbed?

Also, is this the same fall that was described earlier as mostly in
snow-covered mountains?
Is it permanent snow at high altitudes, or thaws in Spring?
Is there an update for the size of the fall area?

Best,
Pete

2009-01-21 Thread John higgins
I  Second that Mike!
There are many meteorites that have such beautiful fusion crusts,  I too have
been reluctant to cut them, and whenever I do get around to cutting them, I am
usually surprised to see that they are even more beautiful on the inside. And
then I always ask myself, why didn't I cut this sooner? Look at what I was
missing out on all that time!

Guess the old saying is true

I have a 110gram UNWA that is a whole oriented stone with relatively
fresh crust, but it's so beautiful that I can't bring myself to cut
it.  Now I am rethinking that reluctance! ;) LOL

Best wishes,
Stefan

Re: [meteorite-list] New meteorite fall Morocco

2009-01-21 Thread tett

Aid,

These look like nice meteorites and I don't doubt that these are
genuine. I do find it hard to believe that the small craters were
formed from these stones. The craters look dug and appear too large and
deep for the little rocks your are displaying.

Am I missing something?

[meteorite-list] Ringwoodite

2009-01-21 Thread Pete Pete

Greetings, all,

In the experience of the chondrite-cutters, how common are you finding
ringwoodite in shock melt veins?

Personally, I've only seen (what I believe to be) ringwoodite in two stones out
of the dozens I've cut.

How about size? In mine, the largest area is ~ .5 mm.

For such an outstanding indigo blue colour in a generally brown matrix, I'm
surprised there isn't that much information about the mineral in meteorites on
the internet or my books.

Cheers,
Pete

[meteorite-list] AD - Tucson Show and Much More

2009-01-21 Thread Impactika
Hello List-members,

While you were all feeding the ducks, or the trolls, I have been working!

And I just acquired Craig McDonald's collection.
A lot of very nice stuff in there! Some you haven't seen in a long time,
like Buschhof, Canon City, Chateau Renard, Clark County, Flandreau, Gaylord,
L'Aigle, Mayo Belwa, Ornans, Oxford, Sand Creek, Shergotty, Valkeala, Winona.
And Yes, of course, there is Claxton and Peekskill and Pasamonte and Weston!
And if the Postal Service does not fail me, I will even have them with me in
Tucson.

Warning!, Geoff, our room in the InnSuites is going to be absolutely jammed
paced with great stuff.
But I am sure we will manage to make room for some wine and nibbles. Right?

See you all there.

[meteorite-list] AD: Beautiful Tafassasset slice

2009-01-21 Thread tett

List,

I have a beautiful part slice of Tafassasset for sale. 4.2 grams with
huge surface area. Professionally cut very thin and measuring a
whopping ~36mm x ~52mm. I have purchased a larger piece and now have
this beauty available.

Tafassasset is an exciting meteorite with dual classification of CR
Chondrite or Primitive Achondrite. Just do a search in the Met.
Bulletin http://tin.er.usgs.gov/meteor/index.php .

Also, there have been some hints that exciting new information is coming
out on this meteorite. Perhaps the classification will become even more
unique.

Price is $120 and 5$ for shipping in Canada or the US or $10 for over
seas. Paypal preferred.

First off, many thanks to everyone (the several dozen of you) who
requested details about the contents of my collection.

Also, the pieces Anne lists below are just a sampling of the ones she
requested I pull out in order to have them in time for Tucson. I
believe there are about 35 pieces currently on the way to her. There
are about another 135 still here, to be shipped after she returns from
the showincluding a lot more "good ones".

Again, thank you to everyone who expressed an interest, and I wish
those of you who may acquire any of these pieces, at least the same
amount of enjoyment that they brought me over the years.

Sincerely,

Craig

Tell me about it!

I just received a shipment of lovely historic American chondrite
slices, all with museum labels, plus an old collection from Texas with
some beautiful pieces purchased back in the 1990s, and there are some
serious irons on the way from Europe. Maybe we'll have a fire sale.

But yes, for sure, in our room there will always space reserved for
wine and snacks -- that is very important business : )

Regarding Michael Chamberlain's question yesterday:

Yes, the interstate (I-10) still has all local Tucson exits closed
downtown and midtown, much the same as last year. Some driving tips --
whether you're headed west/south from Phoenix/California or east/north
from the airport/Texas/New Mexico -- can be found here:

. . . along with links to Arizona Department of Transportation pages
with the latest details.

Anne, see you and the gang next week. It was lovely here in Tucson
today -- definitely shorts and flip-flops weather.

Re: [meteorite-list] Ringwoodite

2009-01-21 Thread Mr EMan
Hello Pete: Off the top of my head -- I don't recall ever hearing of "indigo"
blue in a meteorite. I do know that ringwoodite is barely translucent with a
pale purple-over-brown tint especially visible to the eye under a low power
loupe. Perhaps it is just semantics.

When the list last visited ringwoodite veins, I believe they were almost always
found in L chondrites but this could have been from paired finds. I say this
suggesting that the bulk of ringwoodite veins observed/sampled on earth might
have come from the same disrupted parent body-- but have nothing other than
vignette evidence to support it.

I believe your discovery is about right regarding ringwoodite abundance. I have
seen swellings of ringwoodite veins to about 3-5mm but 1mm is normal.
Ringwoodite veins are likely injection veins along existing fractures/lines of
weakness. The purity of the veins does not suggest the veins occur as flash
melts.

About 8 years ago there was a run of ringwoodite bearing slices being sold but
I believe it came from a larger find of multiple stones--Sorry I don't have the
NWA numbers.

Please send a photo when /if you can.

Elton

Dear Pete, Elton and List,
I have several kilos of individual stones of the Sahara 98222?? with
Ringwoodite (haven`t confirmed the # - from my memory- will have to check). I
purchased them from the Labennes about 8-9 years ago. They are an L chondrite.
If you require more information I will locate it. Best, Dirk Ross...Tokyo

[meteorite-list] Wow, what a memory.

2009-01-21 Thread STARSANDSCOPES
Hi all, I was just going through my meteorites and their back up
documentation.

I found an unpleasant reminder of Sept. 11, 2001. Greg Hupe had a 99 gr end
slice of Zag that he had started a week earlier. I had bid several days
before the end of the auction.

When it ended on the evening of the 11th and I won the auction I sure wasn't
thinking of meteorites and I don't think Greg was either.

It seems like the whole world shifted on that day. Kind of like a Sliders
episode. Any one remember that SiFi show? It sure doesn't feel like were
back in the proper dimension yet.

Let's hope this new economy allows for our chosen science/hobby to still
flourish.

Stefan:

That sure is a beauty; this is one of the reasons I collect meteorites; finding
hidden treasures of rare beauty.

Could it be perhaps a CM chondrite? Or part CV and CM? Could account for the
low SG.

In any case it's a prize.

Congrats and thanks for sharing.

[meteorite-list] Caldwell, KS impact melt breccia AD, sort of

2009-01-21 Thread MeteorHntr
Hello List,

The Caldwell, Kansas Meteorite Story.

For 16 years or so, I have been chasing after the Caldwell, Kansas
meteorite. The 1986 version of the BMNH Catalogue (my original treasure map)
listed
this meteorite as being found in 1961, being 12.9 kg TKW with only about 50
grams represented in all collections world wide.

This discrepancy in weights made the treasure hunter in me say "Hu..."

My hunch was that someone had found this meteorite and sent Nininger or Huss
a chip off it. It probably was determined that it was indeed a meteorite,
but the finder, for whatever reason, didn't want to sell it back then. This
scenario, while very rare, did happen at least one other time that I know
about in the past century. Both Nininger and Huss were known for being
persistent at getting specimens the located out of the field and into the lab.

In the case of multiple finds from a strewnfield, the need wasn't as great
to get ALL of them, but in the case of single specimen finds, there was a
logical case that could be made that science needed to study the new finds, and

thus, not many of those got away.

So for a couple of years, I tried to find who had this rock. I would ask
around the Caldwell area when my field trips took me to that part of Kansas,
all with no luck.

One day I decided to write to Margaret Huss (daughter of Nininger and widow
of Glen Huss) in Colorado and I asked her what the old AML records might have
on the Caldwell meteorite. In her gracious and helpful way, she responded
by giving me the name of the finder, Vernie Havorka. Their records showed
that the AML did get a piece of this meteorite, but that was all.

Some research on my part showed that there was no longer any Havorkas in the
Caldwell area. A little more detective work and eventually I located the
original finder in another city. I paid a visit to Vernie's home and we
struck
up a great conversation and a friendship was formed.

He showed me his meteorite, and told me about the find. Nothing dramatic,
just that he had hit it with the plow on his family farm outside of Caldwell.
He mentioned that both Nininger and Huss had paid him a couple of visits
over the years, but that he never really wanted to part with the rock.
Although
he had given one of the men a piece for testing and verification.

When I asked if he would want to sell it now, he told me that it was in his
Will, designated to go to his son upon his death, and that it wasn't for
sale.

Vernie was a part time pastor of a small country church and he had taken
quite a few missionary trips over seas. He was full of stories of exciting
trips to exotic places. We would talk, sometimes for hours about far away
places. One trip I remember him talking about was going to the U.S.S.R.
before
their break up. It was an interesting story, one that I used as a spring
board
to think about what it would be like to go to Russia and travel to the
Sikhote Alin site on a "missionary" trip of my own to "save" some of those
lost
rocks.

Early on, I had mentioned to Alan Rubin at UCLA about finding the Caldwell
finder, and Dr. Rubin asked if there was a way I could get him just a little
piece of the rock for some more detailed testing. So, the next time I was in
Kansas, I popped in on Vernie, and made the request, and he obliged by
letting me take off a small piece around 20 grams.

I got the fragment to UCLA and they were able to determine that the rock was
indeed an L-impact melt breccia. The portion he got from me was of the
impact portion, so a more detailed classification wasn't forthcoming.

While I took Vernie at his word, that he didn't want to sell his specimen
that he treasured, over the years I would still pop in on him. I remember
showing him, in his driveway, the 280 pound "Rediscovery Stone" I found at
Brenham in 2005, that was just a few days before I ended up finding the
Brenham
Main Mass. That was one of several finds I had showed him over the years when
I had a good excuse to stop in to see him again. We would talk about various
things and I would eventually get around to half heartedly asking if he was
sure he didn't want to sell his rock yet?

The answer was always the same.

This last fall, I was passing near Vernie's home on the way out to shoot the
Discovery TV meteorite segment at Brenham, when strangely there wasn't an
answer at his door. I left him a note saying "hi" on my business card and I
went on. Several weeks later I received a phone call from Vernie's son
informing me that Vernie had passed away very near the time I last stopped by
and
left my last note.

The conversation with his son veered around different topics, including how
much Vernie enjoyed his meteorite. I mentioned to the son that Vernie had
indicated that while he was alive, he didn't want to part with the meteorite,
but that it wo
