[meteorite-list] New NASA Images Indicate Object Hits Jupiter
http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.cfm?release=2009-112 New NASA Images Indicate Object Hits Jupiter Jet Propulsion Laboratory July 20, 2009 [Image] Jupiter This image shows a large impact shown on the bottom left on Jupiter's south polar region captured on July 20, 2009, by NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility in Mauna Kea, Hawaii. Credit: NASA/JPL/Infrared Telescope Facility Scientists have found evidence that another object has bombarded Jupiter, exactly 15 years after the first impacts by the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9. Following up on a tip by an amateur astronomer that a new dark "scar" had suddenly appeared on Jupiter, this morning between 3 and 9 a.m. PDT (6 a.m. and noon EDT) scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., using NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility at the summit of Mauna Kea, Hawaii, gathered evidence indicating an impact. New infrared images show the likely impact point was near the south polar region, with a visibly dark "scar" and bright upwelling particles in the upper atmosphere detected in near-infrared wavelengths, and a warming of the upper troposphere with possible extra emission from ammonia gas detected at mid-infrared wavelengths. "We were extremely lucky to be seeing Jupiter at exactly the right time, the right hour, the right side of Jupiter to witness the event. We couldn't have planned it better," said Glenn Orton, a scientist at JPL. Orton and his team of astronomers kicked into gear early in the morning and haven't stopped tracking the planet. They are downloading data now and are working to get additional observing time on this and other telescopes. This image was taken at 1.65 microns, a wavelength sensitive to sunlight reflected from high in Jupiter's atmosphere, and it shows both the bright center of the scar (bottom left) and the debris to its northwest (upper left). "It could be the impact of a comet, but we don't know for sure yet," said Orton. "It's been a whirlwind of a day, and this on the anniversary of the Shoemaker-Levy 9 and Apollo anniversaries is amazing." Shoemaker-Levy 9 was a comet that had been seen to break into many pieces before the pieces hit Jupiter in 1994. Leigh Fletcher, a NASA postdoctoral student at JPL who worked with Orton during these latest observations said, "Given the rarity of these events, it's extremely exciting to be involved in these observations. These are the most exciting observations I've seen in my five years of observing the outer planets!" The observations were made possible in large measure by the extraordinary efforts of the Infrared Telescope Facility staff, including telescope operator William Golisch, who adroitly moved three instruments in and out of the field during the short time the scar was visible on the planet, providing the wide wavelength coverage. JPL is managed for NASA by the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. Re: [meteorite-list] Classification of the Arizona Fall
Hi Greg, 1933 deserves the moniker as the "Year of the Fall". I counted 18 falls worldwide and with six falls occurring in the US. Both numbers include Williard (b), a possible witnessed fall. The US falls are Pasamonte, Cherokee Springs, Athens, Williard (b, Sioux County, and Malaga. Pasamonte, Williard (b), and Malaga all fell in New Mexico. So a few more falls have to occur in 2009 to for the record to be broken. In second place is 1868, when thirteen falls were recorded worldwide. In 1938, four falls were recorded in the US for that number two position. Re: [meteorite-list] NOT AN AD: Being Hacked Sale!!!
Hey Greg, MikeG, List I've tried tracing this through SSH with netstat and lsof and lots of other linux commands and nothings is working. I can't seem to find out where the vulnerability is. Oh and my server is a Virtual Dedicated Server, meaning I am the server admin. This is NOT normal hosting, or hotlinking bandwidth leeching. If it were that would be a simple fix. My server vendor will NOT help me with this. It is not their problem as the vulnerability MAY have been installed by me on the server using a third party script like my Wordpress Blog software written in PHP. Warning to Geoff Notkin and anyone else out there that uses Wordpress, Zen Cart, OS Commerce, PHP Pro Bid, Wikimedia, or any other third party PHP script that uses a MySQL database, please check your systems. This is happening to me now as I write this, but it could happen to you too. Regards, Eric Greg Catterton wrote: Hey, I used to have some experience in this field and may be able to lend a hand. This sucks Eric, but your host should not be charging you for this - it's their security that was breached. They should bear the burden of the bandwidth charges. [meteorite-list] NOT AN AD: Being Hacked Sale!!!
Hi everyone, I am dealing with a hacker on my server (ALL 40 of my websites are up and down and email is spotty) as I am writing this email! I am currently being hacked and this sale is only because of this because it will cost me $1 per GB of bandwidth overage usage fees as soon as it reaches my bandwidth limit. Every minute that goes by is costing me money I've spent the last 4 to 5 days trying to stay one step ahead of this hacker, and he keeps leeching the bandwidth off my server. I've done everything I know how to do and spent hours on the phone with my server vendor, but they are of no help as it seems the extent of this hack extends into the legal realm. In other words the hacker is breaking the law by essentially causing a DoS (denial of service) by using up all my server memory and bandwidth and can be prosecuted if we are able to determine where this hack is coming from! The money generated from this sale is going to bandwidth overage fees, upgrading of services through my vendor, and to hire a network systems administrator, and attorney. I will be seeking legal action and prosecuting to the full extent of the law possible! If anyone out there has is a system administrator or can refer me to one that might be able to help I would greatly appreciate it. This must stop now. The bandwidth being used is in the hundreds of Gigabytes per day! Multiply that by $1 per GB and this can get very expensive VERY FAST! Again, if anyone out there in meteorite land is a sys admin or knows someone who might be able to help I would be forever grateful. I'm a webmaster and web design artist/photographer. I can run servers, install server related software, and run 40 websites at a time, but I'm not hacker, and this is beyond my knowledge level. Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide. [meteorite-list] Yet more gleanings from the MAPS abstracts -
Hi List, In the July 2009 MAPS supplement, I ran across a few more interesting abstracts - "CR54 Isotopic Anomalies in the Tagish Lake and Orgueil Carbonaceous Chondrites." In this study, samples of Tagish Lake and Orgueil were examined using stepwise dissolution. CR was released and then measured. The results, quoted below say it all - "We report here the highest CR54 excess found so far in a silicate fraction of a meteorite. This occurs in Tagish Lake and reinforce the fact that this meteorite is made up of very pristine material (the most pristine of all according to this study) and strengthens suggestions that Tagish Lake may have originated from a comet or a type-D asteroid in a cold region beyond the asteroid belt, where it's components could have conserved their pristine signatures." ... Another fascinating abstract, that left wanting more detailed info, was this - "Six Models for the Formation of the Earth's Atmosphere" In studying the source and formation of planetary atmospheres, six different models were used to simulate the formation of an Earth-type atmosphere. Model #1 is the volcanic atmosphere as defined by W.W. Rubey. Model #2 is the atmosphere released by geysers and fumaroles contaminated with surface water. Model #3 is outgassed Hawaiian volcanoes, sourced from a degassed upper mantle. Model #4 is atmosphere expected by a purely cometary impact. Model #5 is a "steam" atmosphere from a CI-type asteroid impact. Model #6 is a pure meteoroid atmosphere from sustained bombardment. Guess which model came closest to producing Earth's atmosphere? #6. Only the #6 model fits the measure composition of Earth's atmosphere. Also of note is that the very low Ne mixing ratio invalidates the 5th model completely. So, perhaps we owe the water we drink and the air we breathe to meteorites. :) That's all for nowmore gleanings later Best regards and clear skies, MikeG -- . Mike Gilmer posted: Is anyone still combing that strewnfield? (or is it all cultivated farmland by now?) Dear Mike: When Lisa and I were hunting the Buzzard in late April, the landowner told us that the ground would be planted "within a few weeks." They grow canola in those fields, and he told me the stalks get quite high and are densely packed. Rob Wesel and Mike Bandli were there shortly after us, and those guys are no slouches : ) In addition a very friendly eight-person team from the University of Edmonton were methodically gridding all 800 acres. They told me they would continue hunting every weekend for as long as they could. So, I would imagine the field has been quite thoroughly searched by now. There was additional land south of us, but that had been tied up by one of the other Canadian universities. I noticed in one of the university bulletins that student volunteers were wanted for additional hunting during the summer, so I wouldn't be surprised if hunting is still in progress on uncultivated land. Re: [meteorite-list] WHO IS THE BEST AND MOST SUCCESSFUL METEORITEHUNTER OUT THERE?
Hunters & gatherers All the same. >hunters and those who do it for Science That's a very common misconception - who says that the not officially appointed hunters wouldn't serve science? To a private hunter or dealer it doesn't matter, whether he sells to a private collector or to an university. In fact they serve science very well, in delivering the deposit and type specimens of their finds for free, making other donations too; in offering a larger diversity and quantity of finds than e.g. all scientific campaigns together had found so far, and that at enormously lower costs than science would have to bear to find that pieces by their own, even allowing them to cherry-pick the most interesting material, while with the official searchs you have to pay also for the main load, the weathered chondrites, where nobody is interested in. So a certain service to science can't be denied. >those who recover meteorite for a living A very few can maintain (an often very modest)living standard with their finds only, cause they sell that stuff so cheap. Btw. that protectionist debate has even some social implications. In principle many of the most successful hunters on the planet, do have to look for a new job now, since it's forbidden to search in Oman. Well for them and for other hunters or also for the NWA dealers of the first world, if then Morocco as last free Sahara country will be closed, that will be easier than for all the nameless local NWA-hunters in the Sahara countries, to whose we and science owe many more recoveries and in total also more important recoveries than Antarctica ever yielded. The foundation of their existence will be destroyed. (If I look in the publication records, it's astonishing that some, who shout loudest for banning private hunting, had the highest profit of the excellent work of these NWA-people. For my taste, that is morally abhorrent.) Ah Pierre, is it theoretically possible, that the expert hunters could take part in an Antarctic field trip as official members or are there formal obstacles? Would be perhaps promising, if those who proved to have the best skills in spotting meteorites in the hot deserts would try their abilities there once too? At least I'd guess, that the one or other would immediately shake in on such an opportunity. Imagine, for them it must be like a holiday. To be free of that pressure to succeed to find something better than an OC or an EUC, to get the expedition costs refinanced. Salary carries on coming in, to be insured. Not to have to care and to pay for transportation and equipment, Not to have wait for the classification, no preparation, polishing, cutting - and not to have to care for selling that stuff Aaand most important: to take part in that ADVENTURE !! Perhaps "to search" sounds more academic than "to hunt", and the most of the searchers in Antarctica are (at least some kind of) scientists... ;- take care, pekka s beer hunter who likes movie Deer Hunter (not enough of bears here in Finland to hunt, so we are also "moose-hunters" (not mouse) Martin Altmann kirjoitti: Maybe those in Antarctica are searchers and those in the desert hunters? Juli 2009 13:27 An: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Betreff: [meteorite-list] WHO IS THE BEST AND MOST SUCCESSFUL METEORITEHUNTER OUT THERE? Dear list I saw Jeff Grossman rightfully mentioned Antarctic search leaders on top of that contest, but the point was dismissed, someone even suggesting that collecting meteorite in Antarctica is not "hunting" but "fishing"; myself I hunt and fish animals and I have collected meteorites both in Antarctica and hot deserts. Recovering meteorite in Antarctica is not like going to Tucson show, it requires a lot of walking, and expertise is spotting the right rock (the story about a single black stone among a 100% pure ice surface is only a small part of it). Even when done on snowmobile, that is not such a fun when the skin of you face fell frozen or when you risk ending in a crevasse. It requires also a personal engagement (who is ready not to have a shower and fresh food for months?) that is not equaled by tours in hot deserts. Remember that the Japanese are out of there home for more than one year when they go for meteorites. So definitely Antarctic recovery expedition is "hunting", unless you disqualify as "hunters" people being paid by governments to collect meteorites. No virus found in this incoming message. [meteorite-list] WHO IS THE BEST AND MOST SUCCESSFUL METEORITE HUNTER OUT THERE?
as a response to Martin, yes one could consider that those who recover meteorite for a living are hunters and those who do it for Science and academic carrier are searchers, but this leaves apart those that are not academics but do this as a passion and live on another job. Moreover the activity is the same, the only difference being the source of money on the personal bank account. I hunt animals for fun, not for feeding my family; still I consider myself as a hunter in that activity. -- Pierre __ http://www.meteoritecentral.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
Re: [meteorite-list] WHO IS THE BEST AND MOST SUCCESSFUL METEORITEHUNTER OUT THERE?
Maybe those in Antarctica are searchers and those in the desert hunters? Note that some scientists use the term "hunter" with a pejorative connotation. More with the meaning treasure hunter or even poacher. -Ursprüngliche Nachricht- Von: meteorite-list-boun...@meteoritecentral.com [mailto:meteorite-list-boun...@meteoritecentral.com] Im Auftrag von roche...@cerege.fr Gesendet: Montag, 20. Re: [meteorite-list] GPS Device located on my car!
Well, Mike, it is known quite well that Ruben, taking into consideration the dessert conditions, prefers to work quadrupedly lowtech - so you'd better pay attention if you see something like this http://www.knipz.de/images/gameimages/255/simple/f792eabb-b4e7-4042-8000-3824cf0a647b.jpg close to your car ... I demand a full IMCA investigation. Today while preparing to depart for field operations in southern Arizona, Greg Hupe discovered an illicit GPS tracking device placed under my car! Ruben, I know it was you! This is an outrage, I feel so violated that the trauma may keep me out of the field for a few days. Sadly this will lead to the loss of inmportant data. Below is a photo of the object discovered. Anyone with any information on this object please call me ASAP. http://meteoriteguy.com/ebayauctionstockphotos/tracker.JPG My wife will now be dropping us from her airplane into the hot zone. Looks like very hi-tech and professional equipment, perhaps the Secret Service of Bulvania or some hostale force from the outer space... best, pekka s michael cottingham kirjoitti: Dude, I bet there are finger prints on it?
