Safely. As of this writing..it appears we are talking about East of Granite Mountain in an area that would be accessible using State Highway 174..the Brush Road and the old Granite Ranch Road (Pony Express Route). Depending on the plotted trajectory...and I'm getting a few phone calls returned that indicate the heavier material could of fallen well West of the Dugway Range Boundary. I need more info. One of my friends at a cattle camp in the are swears he heard sonic booms that were multiple and too close together to be supersonic low level aircraft. Which frequent the area all the way to Sevier Lake. Usually they project a single boom. These he claims were sharper and at least three close, but seperate. He was sheltering from the wind so did not see any visual phenomenem. [meteorite-list] Gauteng: State declares ownership before meteorite is found
One really wonders if this approach offers sufficcient incentive to initiate recovery efforts: Eyewittness News: Meteor belongs to the state Gia Nicolaides The Astronomical Society of South Africa said on Wednesday a meteor had no monetary value and belonged to the state where it landed. Dozens of people claimed the meteor spotted over Gauteng at the weekend landed on their property. The astronomical society's Tim Cooper said even if it landed on someone's property, they did not own it. By law in this country any meteorite which hits the ground belongs to the state. So it will be given over to the universities to study its origins and its characteristics, after that it will become property of the state so somebody who finds this object will not be able top keep it, said Cooper. Some highlights are: COVERT. last available slice (unless you want to buy the main mass) Amerikanite - Colombianite. A nice transparent specimen. These use to be considered tektites but recently tested to be terrestrial so now they are pseudotektites Benguerir. 17.8g fragment with a large crusted area. This came from my collection specimen, It has a natural? fissure and I split it with my hands. Starting at $0.99 I can't believe it still have no bids! Kem Kem 33, another of the very limited numbered Kem Kem. this one splitted by M. Casper over 10 yeras ago, with a nice fusion crust. Both halves included in the auction. Yes Svend...profound ignorance in one of its highest forms. So phenomenally presumptive! All of these stories read similarly to the below ...any meteorite which hits the ground (sic) belongs to the state...it will be given over to the universities to study...after that it will be come property of the state... THE PART BETWEEN IT HITTING THE GROUND AND THEN GOING TO UNIVERSITIES AND A DUSTY SHELF OF THE STATE AFTER THAT -- THE ACTUAL LOCATION/FINDING/RECOVERY OF THE EFFEN THING -- JUST SEEMS TO HAPPEN AUTOMATICALLY TO THE, WELL, PROFOUNDLY IGNORANT. Pathetically sad, and a trend that should be forestalled with every bit of energy that genuine meteorite enthusiasts across the globe can muster... [meteorite-list] ALH84001-- the death of it's rumors greatly exaggerated
Martian meteorite surrenders new secrets of possible life BY CRAIG COVAULT SPACEFLIGHT NOW Posted: November 24, 2009 Compelling new data that chemical and fossil evidence of ancient microbial life on Mars was carried to Earth in a Martian meteorite is being elevated to a higher plane by the same NASA team which made the initial discovery 13 years ago. Sources tell Spaceflight Now that the new data are providing a powerful new case for the Allen Hills Meteorite to have carried strong evidence of Martian life to Earth -- evidence that is increasingly standing up to scrutiny as new analytical tools are used to examine the specimen. The latest findings are the product of new research using more advanced High Resolution Electron Microscopy than was in existence when the initial findings were made and announced by NASA and the White House in 1996. Those laboratory sensors are being focused directly on carbonate discs and associated tiny magnetite crystals present inside the meteorite Allen Hills ALH 84001. Sources tell Spaceflight Now that the more detailed data on magnetite crystals and carbonate discs now available largely counter a wide range of opposing theories as to why the finding should not be supported as biological in origin. Now, 13 years after the Martian meteorite life story emerged, the science team finally feels vindicated. Their data shows the meteorite is no smoking gun but is full of evidence that supports the existence of life on the surface of Mars, or in subsurface water pools, early in the planet's history. The new data are expected to be addressed publicly within days by NASA Headquarters in Washington, where they could become part of the political debate on future NASA mission directions. The findings have already emerged within the scientific community in the form of an extremely detailed 46-page paper provided to Spaceflight Now on new Mars life findings. The document is part of the November issue of the respected journal Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, the journal of the Geochemical and Meteoritic Society. Its authors are Kathie Thomas-Keprta, Simon Clement, David McKay (who led the original team), Everett Gibson and Susan Wentworth, all of the Johnson Space Center. Keprta is the principal author. Although led by a Johnson Space Center team, the additional evidence for Martian life in the Allen Hills meteorite has been an open topic for the last several weeks in astrobiology division halls at the NASA Ames Research Center near San Francisco and at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena. It's hot news. The new work centers on so-called magnetic bacteria that on Earth, and apparently Mars as well, leave distinctively-shaped remnants in the rock. In addition the features test with a high chemical purity more like a biological feature than geological. These are just like the magnetite-related life forms found in the meteorite believed to represent Martian life forms, says Dr. Dennis Bazylinski, who peer reviewed the new findings. He also studies such Earth life forms in his laboratory at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. I think the paper is really excellent. I have no trouble with the paper, Bazylinski told Spaceflight Now. I work on magnetic bacteria, and one indication there was life on ancient Mars are these particular magnetite crystals in the meteorite that look like they came out of magnetic bacteria. At first [when the data was reported in 1996], I thought there might have been an error. I have no doubt about that now. I know there is no error, Bazylinski stressed. The big question is can these things [magnetite crystals] be reliable magneto fossils, and that is a matter of debate. But it turns out that the magnetic bacteria make some very unique shapes of magnetite crystals. And one of the organisms we work with on Earth makes particles that look virtually identical to what we see from Mars in the meteorite. Scientists say micro-fossils of bacteria are nested with tiny crystal magnetites that provide additional evidence for life. Credit: NASA Another noted researcher in this field who has peer reviewed the new paper, and is supportive of the findings, is Dr. Joseph L. Kirschvink of CalTech. Unfortunately, as the new information was about to be announced by NASA, he was on a freighter hoping to survive a crossing the treacherous Drake Passage between Cape Horn and Antarctica, where he will do studies during the Antarctic summer. But posted on his Web site is a message about the Allen Hill Meteorite work: One of the most interesting debates involving magneto fossils concerns their use by Dave McKay [and the Mars meteorite team] as biomarkers in the ALH84001 Martian meteorite. This is clearly the most interesting and innovative use of potential magnetosomes as a biomarker, said Kirschvink. For years after the Martian meteorite data were first presented, opponents of the life theory argued that the same shaped features and associated chemical purity

[meteorite-list] Meteorite - new issue - Lovina ungrouped iron
Today the current issue of Meteorite arrived. While I haven't found time yet to read through the articles, I had a post card fell from inbetween pages, showing a brilliant and most exciting photo, which I'd like to point your kind attention to. The photo shows the surf-sculpted mass of the Lovina ungrouped iron, a 1981 find from Bali Indonesia of a 8.2 kg meteoritic iron. Ever since I heard from its discovery and classification I wondered how it might look like. Particularly as I walked the very beach where it was found repeatedly in 2004 and 2008. Well, it is not exxagerated to say, that the specimen's appearance has nothing in common with iron meteorites as we know them. The anthrazite colored mass displays a beautiful and striking three dimensional crystallization pattern which reminds one on the stepped roof architectures of Balinese temples - or on colonies of polyhedral Pacific barnacles clinging to rocks in the surf. The iron is of such striking plasticity that one is tempted to doubt, that the structures present are indeed revealed by nature and not by a very gifted sculptor. Perhaps our fellow list member and author of this world class photo, Darryl Pitt, is so kind to provide a link. For those who might not receive Meteorite, or think, they have seen it all its really worth a look. Hi all - No surprise. The distribution of the PHA's pretty much nailed it from the start. I interviewed the fellow who did the scans while we smoked cigaretters outside the first news conference. BUT you have to ask yourself, which find is more significant, ALH 84001, or the Shiva Crater? Oh, and by the way , what this new work means is that the back contamination hazard just increased to the point where manned Mars flight will not be possible for many many years to come... if ever. In other words, for many people, manned Mars flight just became as popular as swine flu... so don't go planning your budgets on that basis. E.P. [meteorite-list] ESA's New SOHO Science Archive Now Online
http://sci.esa.int/science-e/www/object/index.cfm?fobjectid=45900 ESA's new SOHO science archive now online European Space Agency 23 Nov 2009 Access to data from the ESA-NASA SOHO mission has just become easier with the launch of a new SOHO science archive with enhanced capabilities for searching and visualising the vast SOHO data archive. This is the first in a new generation of science archives under development at ESA's European Space Astronomy Centre. Since operations began in 1995 the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) has been transmitting data from its twelve scientific instruments back to Earth at a rate of 1 Gigabyte per day. Analysis of this data has resulted in ground-breaking scientific results which have included the first images of a star's convection zone and the structure of sunspots below the photosphere; the most precise measurements of the temperature structure, interior rotation, and gas flow in the solar interior; the discovery of new dynamic phenomena such as coronal waves and solar tornadoes, and the discovery of more than 1600 comets. The recently launched ESA SOHO Science Archive allows for seamless access to the complete archive of science data sets from the 12 instruments as soon as the data are processed. A Graphical User Interface, based on state-of-the-art technology, provides both the expert and layman with access to a wide variety of data including helioseismic measurements of the centre of the Sun, full-disc images of the solar atmosphere in different wavelengths, and measurements of the solar wind filling the interplanetary media. The ability to generate on-the-fly sequences of images facilitates viewing in minutes processes that take days or months in real time. This type of tool has contributed to discoveries of new solar phenomena, such as the aforementioned coronal waves, solar tornadoes, and even new comets. Innovation and interoperability are key to the new archive One of the challenges in developing the new archive was to find a way to provide a quick response to queries of a complex database of more than 2 million solar observations. The complex relations between the data fields resulted in slow responses when using traditional database searches. This was overcome by applying the Dijkstra graph theory search algorithm to database searches. By generating table joins on-the-fly, database searches are improved resulting in better response times when compared to the traditional approach. A simple query of all observations within the SOHO science archive, for instance, takes less than a second to return results, a response that could not be achieved using the traditional methods. Enhanced functionality in the archive is provided by the 'Time Animator', a platform-independent tool that instantly generates video sequences of the Sun. Several imaging instruments can be selected at one time to create parallel video sequences. The new archive has been developed in compliance with protocols defined by the International Virtual Observatory Alliance (IVOA). In addition, scientific requirements from the community have been gathered by the Archive Scientists and converted into functionalities within the archives. These two factors along with the ability to interface with standard analysis tools that are also VO compliant renders this archive an essential tool in solar research. Preserving the legacy of the ESA science missions The SOHO science archive is the first in a series of new generation scientific archives being developed and implemented by the Science Archives and Virtual Observatory Team at the European Space Astronomy Centre in Spain. These archives will contribute to preserving the legacy of ESA's science missions by conserving and providing access to data from all of these missions. http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.cfm?release=2009-179 No Wheel Stall in Diagnostic Drive Jet Propsulsion Laboratory November 25, 2009 On Sol 2095 (Tuesday, Nov. 24), Spirit performed a set of diagnostic actions related to a stall of the right-rear wheel on the previous drive, three days earlier. The diagnostics showed a fully functioning wheel free of obstruction. The rover was commanded forward with 1.5 meters (4.9 feet) of wheel spin. The rover moved 2.1 millimeters (0.08 inch) forward, 1.1 millimeters (0.04 inch) to the left, and 0.3 millimeters (0.01 inch) down. The cumulative results from Sols 2088 to 2095 (Nov. 17 to 24) are 8.1 meters (27 feet) of commanded motion, 15.7 millimeters (0.6 inch) of forward progress, 9.9 millimeters (0.4 inch) of movement to the left, and 4.8 millimeters (0.2 inch) of sinkage. The plan for a drive during the long holiday weekend is another two-step drive, with each step 2.5 meters (8.2 feet) of commanded wheel spin. All wheels will be straight and run at the same speed. Results of this commanded drive will be analyzed Monday, Nov. 30. __ http://www.meteoritecentral.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Re: [meteorite-list] Metal detector Question
Hi Erik and List, A gold machine can find all targets. But without a discriminating coin machine, you have to dig each target to find out what it is (be it foil, pull tabs, nails, etc.). If you only have an hour to hunt a park, that could mean the difference between recovering 30 coins with a DFX, or 5 with a GMT (with a lot more junk recovered). While a DFX can find gold/meteorites, all the folks I know will leave the coin machine at home. Dean, if you spend most of your time in a city, you would probably be best served with a coin machine as there are a lot of sites within easy reach. Since I bought a coin machine, I've done a lot more detecting because the gold/meteorite fields in my area require at least a day trip. I can fill a hours time now (or even less) and find some coins/jewelry. Good luck, Mark --- On Tue, 11/24/09, Erik Fisler erikfw...@msn.com wrote: From: Erik Fisler erikfw...@msn.com Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Metal detector Question To: meteorite-list meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Date: Tuesday, November 24, 2009, 5:05 PM A good gold machine can find coins, a good coin machine can't necessarily find gold. White's Goldmaster series VLF detectors are great, Fisher's Gold Bug 2 is GREAT, and Minelabs 2100's are simple and great! or you can dive deeper into minelabs detectors and buy some really expensive detectors that are HOO on gold and meteorites but have tons of interference and pinpointing issues... I can take my GMT to the park and it's like shooting fish in a barrel... depends on if you are looking for small targets with low metal, or deep metal targets... happy hunting! A machine for all around hunting usually lowers the performance of the machine in those different styles of hunting. So many detectorists choose to own 2 machines (one for gold/meteorites and one for coins). For hunting gold in Australia I would go with the Minelab because they were developed in Australia in order to combat their heavily mineralized ground. They also make good coin machines. They may have a multi-use machine that does a good job. The newer multi-frequency machines would be something to look at. But again, 2 machines is better. Having a deep seeking gold machine, along with a coin machine better suited to finding shallow, small targets would increase the probability of success. I'm in the states and my Whites serves me well. I also have a coin machine that can hunt gold, but I always put it down and use my dedicated gold machine instead. Good luck, Mark B. Re: [meteorite-list] Don't Check My Bag if You Please....
Hello All, Sorry for the late reply to the topic, but I'm currently in Oakland International waiting to board with a 3.5kg stone in my backpack. I planned ahead, anticipating some scrutiny from security (got here with a few hours to spare), but they only held me up for about ten minutes. I think my age may have had something to do with it, but the factor that seemed to sway them the most was the specimen card that accompanied the rock. To be honest, it seems like dubious security work to me - label or not I suppose I could use the thing as some sort of a weapon (if they would otherwise have not let it on, a label seems a poor excuse), but...I'll not complain. To that end, I'd say that if one's worried about getting onto a plane with meteorites, just...bring some labels or literature - some sort of evidence that suggests that you're not planning to use it for something illegal - and be prepared to take it out and explain what those little circles or the funny patten is... Thinking back, though, my favorite incident involved security agents at Charles de Gaule. We were trying to check a stone, and the thing I remember most clearly about the ordeal (I was around eleven years old at the time) was their asking us if the Gao in question was a bomb... They took some convincing, but let the stone through in the end. Happy Thanksgiving, Jason On Sunday, November 15, 2009, Kevin Kichinka mars...@gmail.com wrote: .. Thanks to list members, Adam, Darryl, Robert, and two Dave's for sharing their experiences while hand-carrying mets on-board domestic and international flights. After my trips to the Tucson show (last visit- sadly way back in 2002), I'd return to Florida loaded with hand-grenade-size chondrites and cannon-ball-size Irons in my hand-carried without a worry of raising threat levels of terrorists tendencies to Code Red. But in 2009, I figured that the times they are a-changing (Dylan). Since 2003 I've made thirty (30, yes) round trips to my home here in Tambor de Alajuela, Costa Rica. I know the rules well (subject to change without notice) even if American Airlines only emails me frequent-flyer spam offers of Jamaican vacations but can't tell me when they change a baggage allowance. If I be gellin', it's packed in a checked bag. I fly out of FLL (Fort Lauderdale) after driving two hours across Alligator Alley in a rental car from Fort Myers. There's no easy home return for disallowed items, i.e. bunker-busting meteorites. As I learned last June when I tried (and eventually succeeded) in bringing aboard a new quad-processor PC, even the metal-framed box used to determine the acceptability of one's carry-on bag varies airport-to-airport forget what's on the American Airlines website. And nothing orally represented to you on the phone means anything at the check-in counter. The computer in its flimsy box was not a carry-on weight problem, and three inches less than the 45 cubic allowance, but of the wrong height dimension. Even if I paid $100 for checking a third bag, it was impossible to check without the baggage-handlers destroying it. We worked it out when I gave my day bag to a carry-on-free passenger to hand to me once we boarded. I carried on the computer. It wasn't my idea, the American Airlines check-in lady told me to do it that way. It's not the heat, it's the stupidity. Based on list members experiences, I don't believe one can routinely transport meteorites on a plane without the threat of loss or serious hassle so 'll have to settle for visitation rights back in Florida. Or I guess I could hire DHL. Thanks for the info. Re: [meteorite-list] (meteorobs) A new video of Utah's Meteor is impressive.
Larry and List, Thank you for your video post. I found two more videos that I think I have not posted. One is from the Utah State University, Logan, Utah; and the other is from Friedman Memorial Airport, Hailey, Idaho. http://lunarmeteoritehunters.blogspot.com/2009/11/utah-bolide-meteor-of-18nov09-idahoutah.html Hope we soon get some good reports about meteorites being found.
