Re: [meteorite-list] Remembering Park Forest (Images)
Hi Steve and all, I made a dozen or so trips over there. I remember that one trip as I was leaving, it began to hail severely to the point of my wondering if the windows were going to hold out. Several cars parked under some lumber buildings to escape the ice. I only had a couple of dings in the roof and hood after it was all said and done. Hopefully a meteorite didn't fall at that time :-) with the ice. Best! --AL Mitterling Quoting Steve Witt stelo...@yahoo.com: Al, Glad you enjoyed the photos. If memory serves me correctly, I believe every slice shown in those photos was cut by you. You did an amazing job. I remember when Bob Haag first got to town and he said you've got slices already? [meteorite-list] AD - Sweet Sale - 25% OFF - Exotic NWA's, Rare Falls, Recent Falls, Exclusive Displays
Greetings Listees, Collectors, Lurkers, Dealers, Hunters, Scientists, and assorted Gentlefolk, There has been much gnashing of teeth and tearing of beards lately over eBay's fee increases, with some sellers passing along those fees to their buyers. That's understandable, because that is how eBay works. It is a sprawling corporate monolith that must sustain itself, so as time goes on, their fees will climb ever higher, a few cents at a time - because their operating costs are never going to decrease and their revenue goals will always increase (break rooms *need* expresso machines and board members *need* private jets). As an eBay member since 1999, I have watched the atmosphere that made eBay special slowly vanish as the management de-personalizes the experience and community there. And I have watched the fees increase again and again and again. I started phasing out my eBay selling presence over a year ago when I first opened my HighWire eCommerce store. I pay a small flat fee every month, regardless of how many sales I get. So I have no escalating costs to pass on to the buyers who use my stand-alone store. I have now said goodbye to eBay as a seller and I couldn't be happier. And to show my gratitude, I am offering a 25% OFF SALE this weekend that is good on everything in the store with no minimum purchase or exclusions. This is a SWEET DEAL, so the coupon code for this sale is sweet. Use the coupon code at checkout to get the discount on your entire order. So, as a meteorite collector you have a choice - go to eBay and help pay the seller's increased fees, or come to Galactic Stone and get an increased DISCOUNT. You decide. ;) I have over 60 different falls and finds in stock and available for purchase. New offerings and highlights include - olivine diogenite chunks (1gr and over), Sikhote Shrapnel, Thuathe, LDG, exclusive NWA 6026, carbonaceous chondrites out the wazoo (CO3.3, CV3, CK5, and more!), UNWA whole stones, big Campo iron meteorites, trinitite displays, Moon Rocks, Mars Rocks, Collector Kits, and more! Re: [meteorite-list] Apollo 13's Booster Impact
This probably isn't even a crater in the usual sense, but more of an impact pit. From low lunar orbit, where the Apollo craft were inserted, the impact speed will be less than 2600 m/s- probably not even close to what would be considered hypervelocity in the sense it is used for cratering, given the nature of the lunar surface. So you just do a kinetic energy calculation, and get 4.7e10 J or about 11 tons TNT equivalent. The crater (or pit) size seems pretty reasonable for that. [meteorite-list] NWA 5980 Iron-rich Winonaite
Hello Finally, I finished first few slices of my new/old Winonaite, paired to NWA 4024. Specimen was purchased in 2007 as iron meteorite. Then in 2008 I saw identical looking meteorite in Ensisheim classified as winonaite. I could not belive that I have the same material. Specimen was send to classification in 2009 and Ted Bunch confirmed that my sample is paired to NWA 4024. So there it is. Yeah, I just saw that Jerry. What a beauty! I figured it was from Michael's own collection. I know he has some very nice individual irons. Re: [meteorite-list] No nickel-free iron meteorites
Thanks Paul, Man those are some technical files. Beyond the understanding of mere mortals such as myself. I would recommend a book by James Kaler, Stars, in which nucleosynthsis is touched upon, along with stellar evolution in general. A readable book for the non-technical person (me). Kaler has written a number of good books on well, stars. -Walter Branch - Original Message - From: Paul H. oxytropidoce...@cox.net To: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Sent: Saturday, March 27, 2010 6:38 AM Subject: [meteorite-list] No nickel-free iron meteorites Walter wrote: “Hi Rob, .nucleosynthesis...
