[meteorite-list] Sun Eats Another Comet -Slight substitution

2010-04-11 Thread Kiera McD

Hi List,

Thirteen years ago SOHO caught these and ESA/NASA used the Subject title,
Sun Bags Another Comet. Every few days it was updated and circulated on
astro related lists.

When I stopped observations around 2000 the Sun had bagged 102 on record.

They are magnanimously keen on showing how many thousand NEOs whiz past each
day (the fear factor at work again), yet I surmize from the posts that they
stopped counting or are not advising very frequently on the Sun's dietary
habits as in the past.

ESA did offer an awesome screensaver of SOHO images that updated live
every 15 minutes showing sunspots, CMEs, comets being bagged, etc. all thru
color-filtered masks. I tried to find it a couple of years ago, but it was
no longer offered. Perhaps..

Best wishes,
Kiera

It's always happened. It must have happened much more at times in the past
when the comet influx was greater. As you note, we're just catching more
now because we have instruments continually monitoring the Sun.

Question: Is this something new? Or has this been happening since the
beginning of our solar system and we're just now tuning in to the show?

Hi All,

Chris wrote:

While Kreutz sungrazers constitute a recent population in geological
terms,

it seems highly likely that there have always been sungrazer
subpopulations.

I agree completely. The best reasoning is that it hardly seems likely that
a burst of sungrazers would occur at precisely the time (in geologic
terms)

that we have developed the technology to detect them. The more realistic
conclusion to draw is that episodes of such activity are the rule rather
than the exception.

Consider, also, that the Kreutz family isn't the only sungrazing comet
family currently making appearances. There are also the Kracht, Meyer
and Marsden groups.

Chris added: And of course, there will always be sungrazers that aren't
part of any subpopulation- sporadics, if you will.

Quite so -- SOHO has observed dozens of non-group sungrazers over the
last 13 years.

(I don't think it has been confirmed that this was a Kreutz comet,
although it seems most likely.)

In this case, it was definitely a Kreutz. Correct location and direction
of motion in the SOHO LASCO fields of view, as well as the correct
velocity.

Best,
Rob

[meteorite-list] AD- Muonionalust End Cut, Gold Basin, Taza, Admire Nuggets

2010-04-11 Thread Keith and Dana Jenkerson
Hello, Everyone!

We have been working away to finish up some things in the garage,
or Slave Cave, as Keith calls it, and wanted to let everyone know
what is new. We have a large Muonionalusta end cut; some larger Gold
Basin specimens, nice, smaller Taza pieces, plus some additional
awesome Admire Nuggets available now. We also have a limited supply of
small vials with Admire Peridot Crystals available, and more will be
coming soon. If you would like the Admire crystals in different sizes,
just let us know.
In case you missed it, we still have some stunning Fukang
available, as well as Admire, Brahine, Imilac, and that amazing
Glorieta Mountain Pallasite Slice. This slice will only be offered for
a little while longer for sale, then it is going back into collection!
We don't deal a lot with NWA's, but we do have some really nice
pieces available that we are offering for a friend of ours; and a few
other odds and ends such as a very nice Murchison and Pena Blanca
Springs.

Thanks for taking a look - we really appreciate it!

Cheers,
Dana

That means the average sized meteorite/fragment found at the Grove Mountain,
Antarctica site weighs only 10.5 grams. I think if we counted every fragment
from the hot deserts, the recovery number would be near 500,000 by now. I have
over 15,000 individuals/fragments in my inventory alone weighing just over 200
kilograms averaging about 13.3 grams each.

Interesting,

[meteorite-list] Meteorite rings - Nickel Content

2010-04-11 Thread Richard Kowalski
My fiance' recently (and with no encouragement by me) came across rings made of
meteoritic iron and asked me if I would be interested in such a ring for my
wedding band. She had never seen them before and I of course hadn't even
considered bringing the idea up, but since she thinks its a great idea for my
ring, who am I to object?

My concern is the possibility of my developing a nickel allergy. AFAIK, I'm not
allergic to the metal, but she certainly is.

My preference would be to have my ring made of a solid billet of the Iron used,
but of course one that has in inlay of the Iron might be a better choice to
limit exposure.

It appears that the most commonly available rings are made using Gibeon
Seymchan and some use Tambo Quemado. I'm just curious which of these three have
the lowest Nickel content?

Thanks

order. The nickel/meteorite will never touch your skin since they are
mostly on top of the rings.

Have fun viewing.

Subject: [meteorite-list] Meteorite rings - Nickel Content

My fiance' recently (and with no encouragement by me) came across rings
made of meteoritic iron and asked me if I would be interested in such a
ring for my wedding band. She had never seen them before and I of
course

hadn't even considered bringing the idea up, but since she thinks its a
great idea for my ring, who am I to object?

My concern is the possibility of my developing a nickel allergy. AFAIK,
I'm not allergic to the metal, but she certainly is.

My preference would be to have my ring made of a solid billet of the
Iron

used, but of course one that has in inlay of the Iron might be a better
choice to limit exposure.

It appears that the most commonly available rings are made using Gibeon

Seymchan and some use Tambo Quemado. I'm just curious which of these
three have the lowest Nickel content?

Thanks

Hi Warren and List,

Fakes are not rare.

However, a man who walks the railroad tracks looking for rocks to
spray paint, is rare. ;)

[meteorite-list] Workshop and Field Excursion: Damage to Target Rocks During Impact Cratering

2010-04-11 Thread Ron Baalke

http://folk.uio.no/stephaw/cdws.html

Damage to target rocks during impact cratering
Oslo, Norway
Workshop: June 6-8, 2010
Field Trip: June 9-11, 2010

MEETING LOCATION AND DATE

The workshop will be arranged at PGP (Physics of Geological Processes)
http://lux.uio.no/pgp/ at the University of Oslo http://www.uio.no/,
June 6-8, 2010, with an immediately following excursion to the Ritland
impact structure, southwestern Norway on June 9-11.

!
Please, be aware that June is high touristic season in Oslo, and it can
be difficult to find (inexpensive) housing. Make your bookings as early
as possible!
!

SCIENTIFIC FORMAT

The workshop will be organized in plenary sessions of presentations that
focus on:

1. Distribution and characterisation of rock damage measured in specific
craters

2. The process of rock failure itself - how do current models
incorporate rock mechanics and what are the pros and cons of different
methods?

3. Meso-/micro scale damage e.g. shatter cones (length scale meters),
planar deformation features, broken crystals, and pore space destruction

4. Local scale - fracture-fragmentation zone near crater-origin

5. Regional scale - the influence of pre-existing fault patterns on the
crater shape

6. The relationship between fragmentation of rocks in the vicinity of
impact craters and their observed geophysical signature.

We intend to have oral presentations and workshop/discussion sessions.
The detailed program will be announced later.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

We invite you to send your contribution in LPSC-style
http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meetings/lpsc2010/lpsc2010.templates.html
abstract format. Please send your abstracts and the registration form
WSCDregistration.doc to Stephanie.Werner(a)fys.uio.no . There are no
fees for the workshop itself.

*ABSTRACT DEADLINE is April 15th*

FIELD EXCURSION TO THE RITLAND CRATER

The excursion will take three days (June 9-11, 2010). This event
includes one day travel from Oslo to Hjelmeland near Stavanger (9^th of
June), one full day in the field (10^th of June) and the return to Oslo
via Stavanger on the 11^th of June. The costs for the excursion will be
about 3300 NOK, depending on the number of participants. The amount
should cover transportation, two nights in a hotel (breakfast included),
two dinners and a field-lunch on June 10^th .

[meteorite-list] What sex is your meteorite

2010-04-11 Thread Shawn Alan
Hello Listers,

I have been meaning to ask people what sex they would consider their meteorites
to be and if the names of the meteorite would be the final factor in
determining sex? Or is this a silly question for me to ask in the first place?

Why I ask this question is because alot of times I hear people refer to a
classic car as a female, like look at her she's a beauty. I have even caught
myself referring to some of the meteorites I own as a male of female.

For instance, I would consider Almahata Sitta as female because the way
Almahata Sitta sounds has this romantic feel to it when I say her name. Or the
Weston, I would definitely call it a male meteorite because just the word
sounds bold and strong when I say his name.

Which sex are your meteorites and what determining factors could dictate which
way this would go?
