[meteorite-list] ebay

2010-04-15 Thread James Balister
Tod and Julie, Yup!  I did.  They only asked $1.  I wanted to be the first.  I
did not even look at the pic.  But after I did I also see it is a fake.  It 's
not even black.  They should be kicked off of ebay, and probably will!  But
their town Boscobel is in the target area.

For those who might get a chance to interview witnesses near the
(hopefully found) strewnfield, please check to see if anyone in the
path of the meteor recalls hearing pinging of small particles (on the
order of 1 to a few millimeters or so) upon their houses/buildings, or
if anyone finds tiny pieces of rock (same sizes) around their
properties (such as sidewalks, porches, etc.).  This occurred with the
Park Forest meteor, so it'd be nice to see if any further occurrences
of this phenomena happen.

Re: [meteorite-list] Fireballs & Known Meteor Showers

2010-04-15 Thread Chris Peterson
Meteor showers can, and sometimes do, produce massive fireballs. So if a
fireball occurs during a known shower, it isn't surprising to see some
reference to that in news reports. I always check the radiant of fireballs
against known showers to rule out the possibility that the fireball is a
shower member.

That said, fireballs from showers occur quite high and don't produce sonic
booms. Once multiple camera views are integrated to come up with an
atmospheric path for this event, it will be apparent that the meteor is not
connected with a shower.

Subject: [meteorite-list] Fireballs & Known Meteor Showers

I've been studying meteorites/fireballs for 3 years, but from everything
I've studied the general consensus is that BIG fireballs are not
associated with regular meteor showers... Here's the deal, everyone
"knows" that big fireballs have nothing to do with known/famous meteor
showers... right? So why is it every time there's a BIG fireball people
tend to associate that fireball with a peak in the current meteor shower?
Is it a coincidence that the peak of the Gamma Virginids was supposed to
be these past two nights, and coincidentally a HUGE fireball lights up the
night across 7-10 states during that peak? Is it that these fireballs are
part of the meteor showers, or is it because people are actually looking
at the sky more during the regular meteor shower events and when a
fireball happens they associate it with the shower?

The reason is that during my investigations, and fireball chasing, many a
meteorologist have ask me if these fireballs are associated with regular
meteor showers and I've always told them no, that the "general consensus"
is they are not related. Am I telling them wrong information?

The Livingston area seems reasonable. It's located between Platteville

and Avoca. Both Plateville and Avoca have reported booms and shaking
although there have been interesting reports from further south.
Here's what a fellow in Jesup Iowa said,

"A little after 10:00 last night my bedroom window lit up and when I
looked outside the entire night sky was nearly as bright as day. Every

inch of my yard was visible (was pitch black dark prior) and I thought

an explosion had occurred. I ran into the family room to tell my
parents and they looked at me like I was crazy."

[meteorite-list] Livingston, WI fall

2010-04-15 Thread JoshuaTreeMuseum
Livingston looks like the perfect search area, nothing but farm fields all
around. The problem is the tilling of the soil is in full swing and most
farmers I know are averse to strangers traipsing around in their fields
while they're planting corn and beans.
If this is where it fell, I think Mike Hankey took the correct approach in
PA by distributing flyers, contacting landowners, etc. If there are stones
there, they're being chisel plowed, disced and harrowed up, as we sit at our
computers.

[meteorite-list] Fireballs & Known Meteor Showers

2010-04-15 Thread JoshuaTreeMuseum

Hi Eric,

Of course they're not related, as the fireballs are from the asteroid belt
and the meteor showers are from the tails of comets.

Phil Whitmer

I've studied the general consensus is that BIG fireballs are not
associated with regular meteor showers... Here's the deal, everyone
"knows" that big fireballs have nothing to do with known/famous meteor
showers... right? So why is it every time there's a BIG fireball people
tend to associate that fireball with a peak in the current meteor
shower? Is it a coincidence that the peak of the Gamma Virginids was
supposed to be these past two nights, and coincidentally a HUGE fireball
lights up the night across 7-10 states during that peak? Is it that
these fireballs are part of the meteor showers, or is it because people
are actually looking at the sky more during the regular meteor shower
events and when a fireball happens they associate it with the shower?

The reason is that during my investigations, and fireball chasing, many
a meteorologist have ask me if these fireballs are associated with
regular meteor showers and I've always told them no, that the "general
consensus" is they are not related. Am I telling them wrong information?

Eric Wichman

The Livingston area seems reasonable. It's located between Platteville
and Avoca. Both Plateville and Avoca have reported booms and shaking
although there have been interesting reports from further south. Here's
what a fellow in Jesup Iowa said,

"A little after 10:00 last night my bedroom window lit up and when I
looked outside the entire night sky was nearly as bright as day. Every
inch of my yard was visible (was pitch black dark prior) and I thought
an explosion had occurred. I ran into the family room to tell my parents
and they looked at me like I was crazy."

Aside from the fires, her report was still interesting as it included
descriptions of a fireball lighting up the sky, the house shook, big boom and

Graham and List,

Thank you for some encouragement. Yes...it is the even diameter of the raised
rim and the fact that there are definitely two concentric rings.

I plan to make a day collection trip to the site within ten days. If any
geologically experienced parties are interested in joining me, please contact
off list. There would be the opportunity to hunt meteorites on good ground on
the way there and back. The suspect site is just under three hours from Las

This seems to have been seen over as large as or even over a larger area
than Park Forest. St. Louis up to Iowa/Minnesota, Wisconsin. Just a helpful
fyi, Rockford, Illinois is 83 miles from downtown Chicago and it about
150,000 people, much bigger than Park Forest. Madison WI is about 3 1/2
hours from Chicago. You have to take the "Highway from Hell" as we often
call it, I-90 The Northwest Tollway from O'Hare. Rush hour time is now 45
minutes to O'Hare from downtown Chicago, 20 mph. That's only 15 miles from
downtown to O'Hare. We're dealing with a large suburban area, then further
out farms and woods.

Weather today, Sunny and 83, thunderstorms after midnight, Friday high 66,
Sat and sun highs 53-59.

Anyhow hear of any people actually finding a meteorite yet? It's a large
area from the cameras on the Sheriff's car along the Iowa/Minnesota border
to downtown Madison, WI and then to Northern Illinois.

Happy hunting to everyone. I should meet you all at O'Hare. ;-)

Re: [meteorite-list] Impact Crater - Nevada?

2010-04-15 Thread Jeff Kuyken

Hi Count,

Interesting feature. There actually appears to be 4... maybe 5 of them
running in a line in an almost West to East direction and graduating down in
size. I don't know if this eliminates one origin over another. I guess both
meteoritic and volcanic origins could do this but I'm certainly no expert in
crater formation.

Cheers,

Jeff

Gentlemen and Ladies of the List,

Especially those of you interested in, or experienced in impact craters. I
came across this feature yesterday while planning a field trip to a nearby
area. I have been on the ground in this location several times, but wasn't
aware of it's circular and elevated confirmation until looking on Google.

Hi Count,

Looks to me like you could be on to something there. When you look at it in 3d
elevation and spin around it in google earth it seems to have a raised rim and
possibly even a double ring structure from further out. Perhaps worth
collecting some rocks and have someone look for shocked quartz.

Good luck,

Graham, UK
