Hi Dirk and List,

Thanks for the update on this fall. My memory is lacking, so I don't
recall the fireball event associated with this fall/find.

Two questions :

1) is this new meteorite a fall or a find?

2) what is the classification and official name? (assuming this in
the works or already done)

Best regards and happy huntings to the Wisconsin met hunters!

MikeG

PS - you Wisconsin folks get busy, because the rains are coming!

Re: [meteorite-list] Livingston hunt

2010-04-20 Thread mlangen
I just got word that I will be undergoing some medical procedures Friday
morning that could sideline me for awhile. Thus, I would really like to
make an effort to get out tomorrow, Thursday or both.

I haven't had any luck to date, and am worried about continuing to spin my
wheels and being yet another aggravation to landowners who have likely been
nearly pestered to death already. So, for efficiency's sake, I'm hopeful I
could arrange to tag along with someone who is now actively hunting this
fall. I am certainly not out to undercut or interfere with anybody who
makes his or her living doing this; I'm just a collector seeking that
once-in-a-lifetime chance to find a piece of a fall I was lucky enough to
actually witness.

Anybody?

Thanks,

I am a long-time collector now living not far ESE of Livingston (saw the
"light show" Wednesday night).

While this certainly seems to be a once-in-a-lifetime chance to become
involved in the search for a fall I actually witnessed, I just don't think
I have sufficient hunting experience to go it alone. But I am retired,
know the area and know what to look for. So, if any of you working this
strewnfield might need another set of eyes in the field, please give me a
call.

Congrats Jim!

The big one looks like it has a nice roll over lip. Is that what I see?

Cheers!

[meteorite-list] Remarkable Photos of Natural Shock Waves

2010-04-20 Thread countdeiro
Listees,

These photos are the believed to be the first taken of shockwaves cause by the
acceleration of terrestial material by natural forces. They speak to an
associative comparison with man made explosions and of course those that might
be created by an impactor. Fascinating. No?

[meteorite-list] Thanks for the congrats! Lots of Fun!

2010-04-20 Thread gmh...@htn.net
Hello Everyone,

Thank you everyone for your wonderful congrats! We all thought that with such a
huge fireball that the WI event would have produced an equal
amount of meteorites as Buzzard Coulee, boy were we wrong. The meteorites are
far and few between. The terrain is not difficult, but the
amount of miles hiked per recovery are a lot. The weather has been awesome,
along with the locals with warm hearts and welcoming smiles, but
it looks like the show will be dampened starting Thursday night due to a rainy
forecast, time to change my flights once more...

I will send more personalized emails once I return home within a week, I am
borrowing a laptop computer that I am not used to so replying is
painfully slow, along with no cell service for my out-dated phone is very
frustrating!

Never know what tomorrow will bring...

Greg

[meteorite-list] Wall Street Journal & Meteorite Hunting

Hey Everyone,

Now you know the world is watching when the Wall Street Journal flies out to
interview meteorite hunters, pretty cool!

[meteorite-list] Thanks for the congratulations

2010-04-20 Thread James Baxter
Thanks to all the list members who sent congratulations.

Wow! What a rush it is to see that first meteorite ever, especially when it's a
fresh fall. After striking out (other than Mike's generous gift of one if his
stones) on my one day of looking in West, Texas, I flew out here with some
trepidation. I expected to enjoy the thrill of the hunt and to see some pretty
countryside but to come away empty handed. I was truly lucky. As Greg pointed
out the stones seem to be far more sparse than they were in West.

I can't thank Mike Farmer enough for his help. He encouraged me when I
expressed the crazy idea of coming out in the face of reports of the difficulty
of hunting this fall and introduced me to a site where stones had been found
and where I could pay a fee to search.

Regards,
Jim Baxter

[meteorite-list] Training dogs to hunt meteorites

2010-04-20 Thread Melanie Matthews
First off, congrats to Greg Hupé and to everyone who managed to find some
stones from this most recent fall! How much has been recovered so far?

As you know a dog can be trained to sniff out anything, and with that said I
think they could also be trained to ignore meteor-wrongs! Especially highly
intelligent and tractable breeds such as German Shepherds, Labradors and Golden
retrievers.. this could be done by introducing the dog to a wide range of
meteorites - stones, irons and stony-irons and teach the dog to react in a
certain way (such as sit or pawing at the ground).. Dogs have been shown to be
able to sniff out cancer in people. Also, it is possible that Brix can sense
that his owner has a passion for
meteorites - it isn't uncommon for dogs to actually take on
traits/desires of their owners..

My best

[meteorite-list] ground track estimate for Wisconsin fireball

2010-04-20 Thread Mike Hankey
For fun I worked out an estimated ground track for the WI Fireball. I
don't think its totally accurate, but I'd be interested to compare
notes with others who have worked out solutions.

Congratulations to all the folks in the field making finds and good
luck to everyone else.

[meteorite-list] Not the Wall Street Journal, but very cool article anyway!

2010-04-20 Thread Ruben Garcia
Congrats to Mike farmer and Crew!

The Wall Street Journal article is more proof that we are (when all is
said and done) doing something right.

Rob Wesel, Mike Bandli, Jim Schwade and myself interviewed with the
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel for several hours today. The article which
will be a front page feature in tomorrows paper can be seen here
online. The reporter promised several pictures in the printed version
- so it should be good.

Re: [meteorite-list] Attention ART & all List Members

2010-04-20 Thread Michael Blood
Hello all,
A web search brought the following web site to my attention:

http://cosmictusk.com/just-like-old-times-fireball-repost-of-the-meteorite-l
ist-coverage

It should be noted that list posts are being transposed INCLUDING
PERSONAL EMAIL ADDRESSES, (unlike the List Archives in which list
Member email address are not available to potential spammers, etc.)
This is the first action I have seen that seems to me should
definitely be one of the list rules - not to transpose list posts without
the permission of each list member posting.
What do others think?
