matters is that they donate something at all.

Hi Werner,

Exactly my thoughts. Can't say something nice then keep it to yourself.
The're trying to buy material to give to a school. Joe has offer
material and will be willing to take a loss, making the specimen both
available and less costly by the donations of others being given.

Can't blame Joe for not wanting to take a full loss on the item. At
least he is dontating and not complaining. Nuff said. Best!

Hi Matt, Joe and all,
Huge thanks to Ron Hartman and a $100 pledge (not yet received)
By Robert Matson and all those who have donated to date.
We now have $260- with another $100 pleadged by Robert.
This would be a 3.6g stone at the going rate.
If anyone has any small stone(s) they are willing to sell, even if
it is at the going rate of $100/g, I would very much like to hear from them.
Further $ donations will be much very appreciated.

[meteorite-list] AD - Wisconsin Meteorite Micromounts : $10+

2010-05-18 Thread Galactic Stone Ironworks
Greetings Listoids!

Ok, so I have some tiny pieces of Wisconsin for sale. These are
intended for the budget-limited collector. You will surely find
bigger or nicer specimens of this fall for sale, but you will have a
hard time finding one that is less expensive than my $10 micros.

These $10 micromounts are not sold by weight. I have a glass vial
full of small cutting fragments and I put one of these fragments into
a labelled gemjar. Earliest buyers get the best pieces. These are
not specks or dust - these are solid little crumbs. If you
absolutely have to know the weight or see a photo of the exact
fragment you are getting, then contact me via email. I'll be home all
day, slicing and polishing meteorites. I'll check my email
frequently, so I will get back to you with a photo and a weight. Some
of these fragments have black fusion crust on them, some show metal
fleck, but none are large enough to clearly show the brecciated
lithology of this fall.

http://www.galactic-stone.com/product/wisconsin-meteorite-micromount-livingstonmifflin-fall-04142010

If you want a larger specimen of this fall that does show the
brecciated lithology, I have a nice part slice with black crust around
the edge and it shows this fall's distinctive brecciation. This part
slice is 1mm in thickness and has a lot of surface area for a small
specimen. It weighs 780mg and is unpolished. This is the only
large specimen I have, so once this one is gone, that's it.

http://www.galactic-stone.com/product/wisconsin-meteorite-slice-livingstonmifflin-meteorite-780mg

Your purchase will include a labelled 1.25 gemjar, specimen ID card,
and provenance information. Which BTW, the provenance on these
specimens is solid.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me off-list.

Thanks for looking and happy hunting/collecting!

[meteorite-list] Presolar grains from meteorites: Remnants from the early times of the solar system

Presolar grains from meteorites: Remnants from the early times of the solar

Received 5 October 2004; accepted 4 January 2005

Abstract
This review provides an introduction to presolar grains – preserved stardust
from the interstellar molecular cloud from which our solar system formed –
found in primitive meteorites. We describe the search for the presolar
components, the currently known presolar mineral populations, and the chemical
and isotopic characteristics of the grains and dust-forming stars to identify
the grains’ most probable stellar sources.
Keywords: Presolar grains; Interstellar dust; Asymptotic giant branch (AGB)
stars; Novae; Supernovae; Nucleosynthesis; Isotopic ratios; Meteorites

Introduction
The history of our solar system started with the gravitational collapse of an
interstellar molecular cloud laden with gas and dust supplied from dying stars.
The dust from this cloud is the topic of this review. A small fraction of this
dust escaped destruction during the many processes that occurred after
molecular cloud collapse about 4.55 Ga ago. We define presolar grains as
stardust that formed in stellar outflows or ejecta and remained intact
throughout its journey into the solar system where it was preserved in
meteorites.

The survival and presence of genuine stardust in meteorites was not expected in
the early years of meteorite studies. In the 1950s and 1960s, models of solar
system formation assumed that the matter from the presolar molecular cloud was
processed and homogenized (e.g., Suess 1965, see also Fegley 1993). Most of
this matter accreted to the Sun and less than about one percent remained to
formthe planets, their satellites, and other small objects (asteroids,
Kuiper-Edgeworth-belt objects). During collapse and accretion of matter towards
the cloud center, gravitational heating vaporized presolar solids, and it was
generally assumed that this process resulted in a relatively homogeneous solar
nebular gas made of evaporated presolar solids and presolar gas. Upon cooling
of the solar nebula, new condensates appeared which accumulated to form the
solid bodies in the solar system (Fig. 1). In this very simplified picture, all
matter from the presolar cloud would
be chemically and isotopically homogenized, and no record about the mineralogy
of presolar solids would remain.

[meteorite-list] WHERE ARE THE NANODIAMONDS IN PRIMITIVE METEORITES? PRELIMINARY TEM RESULTS

2010-05-18 Thread Shawn Alan
Tom, List

I am happy your enjoying the nanodiamond series. As for the electronic diamond
detector which band do you have? I hear and have read that the
Gemoro ULTRATester II Diamond Moissanite Sapphire Tester with ULTRAdock is a
great diamond detector.

I can see how graphite might trick a diamond detector in thinking its a diamond
cause its a carbon base element. I bet graphite too is a good conductor with
heat.

Here is something I just found on graphite from this website
http://www.galleries.com/minerals/elements/graphite/graphite.htm

Definition and write up from the link:

Graphite: is a polymorph of the element carbon. diamond is another polymorph.
The two share the same chemistry, carbon, but have very different structures
and very different properties.

* Diamond is the hardest mineral known to man, Graphite is one of the
softest.
* Diamond is an excellent electrical insulator, Graphite is a good
conductor of electricity.
* Diamond is the ultimate abrasive, Graphite is a very good lubricant.
* Diamond is usually transparent, Graphite is opaque.
* Diamond crystallizes in the Isometric system and graphite crystallizes in
the hexagonal system.

write up from the link:
Somewhat of a surprise is that at surface temperatures and pressures, Graphite
is the stable form of carbon. In fact, all diamonds at or near the surface of
the Earth are currently undergoing a transformation into Graphite. This
reaction, fortunately, is extremely slow.
All of the differences between graphite and diamond are the result of the
difference in their respective structures. Graphite has a sheet like structure
where the atoms all lie in a plane and are only weakly bonded to the graphite
sheets above and below. Diamond has a framework structure where the carbon
atoms are bonded to other carbon atoms in three dimensions as opposed to two in
graphite. The carbon-carbon bonds in both minerals are actually quite strong,
but it is the application of those bonds that make the difference.

It may seem strange that one of the softest minerals (and a very slippery
lubricant) is the high-strength component in composites used to build
automobiles, aircraft, and of course golf club shafts. It is the weakly bonded
sheets that slide by each other to yield the slipperiness or softness. Yet
when those sheets are rolled up into fibers, and those fibers twisted into
threads, the true strength of the bonds becomes apparent. The threads are
molded into shape, and held in place by a binder (such as an epoxy resin). The
resulting composites have some of the highest strength-to-weight ratios of any
materials (excluding, of course, diamond crystals and carbon nanotubes).

Graphite can only be confused with the mineral molybdenite which is metallic
bluish silver in color. However, molybdenite is much denser and has a silver
blue streak.

Most graphite is produced through the metamorphism of organic material in
rocks. Even coal is occasionally metamorphosed into graphite. Some graphite is
found in igneous rocks and also as nodules inside of iron meteorites.

But this might be different from presolar graphite too.

Here is something else I found about the origains of presolar grains and where
they come from:

http://iopscience.iop.org/0004-637X/631/2/976/pdf/0004-637X_631_2_976.pdf

Abstract from the link:
The chemical, isotopic, and microstructural

information preserved in these grains can be extracted with TEM

and NanoSIMS analyses and used to form a more detailed and

accurate picture of grain condensation in stellar outflows. The isotopic

compositions of individual presolar grains often permit inferences

as to the types of stellar sources that produced them, such
as asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars and supernovae.

I would have to agree that graphite and the nanodiamonds could set off a
diamond detetor, it would be interesting to take that detector and test it with
some Tagish Lake and see what happens. Why I suggest that is because Tagish
Lake has the highest amount of nanodiamonds present in the meteorite then any
other meteorite out there. One other note to add, Canyon Diablo is know to have
diamonds included in it.

Shawn, Once again, a very interesting post. I like this series you have

similar to chemical vapor deposition at moderate temperatures got me
thinking of the unusual shape of Carbonado Diamonds.

This current post gets me thinking of the enstatite fossil meteorite NWA

[meteorite-list] Contamination during cutting - what impact does it have on analysis?

2010-05-18 Thread Galactic Stone Ironworks
Hi List,

I was wondering, while waiting for some freshly-sliced meteorites to
cool in the oven, what kind of contaminants does cutting add to the
meteorite? I am very careful and I only use distilled water as a
coolant - to prevent chlorine contamination of the specimens. But I
am sure that distilled water alters the specimens in some ways. Also,
I use a diamond-coated blade during cutting, so might this impart some
tiny diamond particles into the meteorite matrix?

Let's assume an unclassified meteorite is sliced for classification -
if the analysis detects diamond, is it easy to discern if the diamond
was present prior to cutting or is it a contaminant from the cutting
blade?

On a molecular level, I assume that stainless steel is shed from the
blade as well. Could this throw off elemental metal results? Besides
cutting, consumer polishing also imparts particles from the sandpaper,
buffing compound, rouge, or whatever else is used.

I would imagine that NASA would use a sterile cutting tool and
environment, but most meteorite collectors and dealers don't. So what
exactly is in the prepared meteorite specimen you receive?

Best regards,

MikeG

Re: [meteorite-list] Contamination during cutting - what impact does it have on analysis?

2010-05-18 Thread Ryan Weidert
Hi Mike,
I just was reading last night about how they cut the Antarctic
meteorites and they did a study on what is imparted to the meteorite
from the blade (they don't use any coolants while cutting). Diamonds
and some of the metal does smear and stick to the meteorite. Here's
the link to the article (half way down the page).
http://www-curator.jsc.nasa.gov/antmet/bandsaws.cfm

The study also found traces of organic compounds that were
contamination due to the plastic bags they used. Everything at some
level is a contaminant, but I'd think certain obvious things are
noticed and disregarded. NASA uses a nitrogen cabinet to store and cut
their meteorites to prevent oxidation. Yes, they are more concerned
about contamination due to the 'pristine' nature of their meteorites
(no or little contamination from air pollution etc), but it still
happens.

I agree that water must do something to the chemistry, but not a clue what.

-cheers,
ryan

[meteorite-list] meteorite magnetism contamination

2010-05-18 Thread GeoZay
The discussion about the concerns of meteorite contamination while cutting
has jiggled a little bell. A few months ago I was talking with Rainer Arlt
about meteorites and he mentioned that he was involved with a project that
measured residual magnetism contained in fresh meteorites. I'm not sure
what that information would tell you, but he was concerned about meteorite
hunters sticking a magnet to a meteorite for testing and mess this
information up. The residual magnetism from a magnet would leave a residual
presence
within the meteorite as well.

Hi all,

Hopper and I had barely returned from Wisconsin when we were asked to
film a segment for the local news.  Although, we didn't find anything
we had great time filming. Later that day we interviewed with the
largest newspaper in the state. The video showed here locally but the
actual article still hasn't hit the stands. From what I hear it will
be a large article in the Arizona Republic and should include my good
friends Laurence Garvie and Marc Fries.  (I hope it includes them,
otherwise it won't be very good...lol)

to the hundreds that clicked on the link and watched the video.

If you haven't seen it, here's the link again
 http://www.mr-meteorite.net/rubenhopperinnews.htm

I still haven't been able to download the actual video (obviously, I
was able to embed it) but I want to download it. I keep all her clips,
articles etc... I think that one day many years from now when we (me
and Hopper) are hunting meteors (not meteorites) with Norton, Kriegh
and Nininger someone down here will want to see them. So, here's my
 question:

Does anyone know how to download a blocked video like this? Any help
 would be appreciated!

we had great time filming. Later that day we interviewed with the
largest newspaper in the state. The video showed here locally but the

Hi All,

Just wanted to let everyone know that I received a VERY nice (overwhelming,
really) package from Michael Cottingham in today's mail. In it were copies
of four separate Dodgeville and Platteville papers containing stories about
the big fall in Livingston/Mifflin -- mementos that I wish I had taken the
time to chase down while I was there a few weeks ago.

But the BIG surprise in the package was a very generous 4+ gram slice from
Michael's latest 105.1-gram find there a little over a week ago! I don't
think Michael has discussed this discovery on the list yet, so I'll leave
the details of that story for him to share. But I will say that it took a
bit of a leap of faith on his, Greg Hupe's, and Eric Wichman's parts to
search in an area I recommended to them (based on radar), given that it was
over 3 miles from the nearest prior find.
(Psychologically, it is much easier to hunt with confidence when you are
searching an area surrounded by other known finds.)

Bottom line is that this find ended up being a significant strewn field
extender, and I'm thankful to Michael, Greg and Eric for diverting valuable
time they could have spent in more productive areas in an attempt to
validate my interpretation of the NEXRAD data. I am quite relieved that
their efforts were not in vain! Their success alone was most gratifying from
a theoretical analysis standpoint; to actually be sent a slice from that
find was (in the words of MasterCard) ...
priceless.

A VERY BIG THANK YOU!

Re: [meteorite-list] Contamination during cutting - what impact does it have on analysis?

2010-05-18 Thread Michael Blood
Hi Michael,
I use the cutting rust preventative by Bill Mason that you
Mix with distilled water (just a little goes a long way, making
It very inexpensive). Bill is the developer/inventor of all the
Paleobond products, but then got into meteorites. He knows
His stuff.
After slicing I put the slices in 96% alcohol (I can get it in
Mexico). Regular rubbing alcohol is like 30% water - you want
As little water as possible, as the alcohol soaks up the water, then
Rapidly evaporates.
I then set them on a paper towel on a plate which
I put in the over to be super dried by the pilot light. Be sure
They are very dry before removing. Otherwise, you will likely
Be protected form rust due to the rest preventer, but your specimens
Will weigh out heavy and then get lighter as they dry out.
This time can be just a couple hrs for thin slices and 4 or 5 hrs
For very thick slices - more for end slices thicker than 5 or 6mm.
To get this cutting agent see BILL MASON near the

Interesting idea Steve. I think Vicky Olds could co-ordinate the hunt. Brian

2010-05-18 Thread Greg Catterton
Any such attempt would have to be worded very carefully and clearly to avoid
any possible disputes that would arise and also have an established system in
place to resolve such disputes.

A comment such as a new law where any meteorite found becomes the
exclusive property of the finder. scares me really bad.

I own my land and would have major issues with someone finding a meteorite on
my property and trying to keep it under such law as stated.

I believe it is time to lobby
congress for a new law where any meteorite found becomes the
exclusive property of the finder. This law would reduce any
litigation on meteorite finds end encourage hunting on
 public lands.

Hi All,
Robert mentioned his 22.61 kg oriented nose cone below, but it's actually
Dhofar 1433 (not 1431). On the one hand it's hard to believe he'd forget
the number of this spectacular piece, but on the other hand he's found so
many meteorites I'm sure it must be hard to keep track ;-) Anyway, I was
fortunate enough to acquire an end section from one of the three smaller

Hello Sonny, List, As per Art's request I will not discuss the Nevada issue,
but I am happy to address Sonny's request that I disclose the agreements I
have in regards to the shares on my hunts. On desert hunts the finder keeps
all of his common chondrites, we do split rare achondrites, lunars,
carbonaceous chondrites, rumurutiites, ect. The thought of my 22.61 kilo DHO
1431 oriented nose cone having been cut in half so that my partner could get
his share is unimaginable to me.
Also, if one finds a broken individual and your partner finds the other
piece, let's say ten feet away, that piece belongs to the original finder,
and that person calls the shots on how the strewn field is hunted from that
point on. All of our agreements are made before we even step foot on an
airplane, this prevents any misunderstandings. As far as Glorieta Mountain
is concerned, every person I have hunted with that has found meteorites kept
their finds, Patrick Hermann, Robert Haag, myself, Shauna Russell, Jim
Strope. I feel that if you work for it, it was meant for you. On large scale
projects such as Springwater we do split equally, but this is a mining
project essentially, we all have a lot of money invested, and all open
ground gets covered, the 'luck of the hunt' is not such of a factor, it was
simply in your grid area. Sonny, I hope this public statement answers you
questions. May I suggest you have a contract in writing with your partners,
and the land owners in the future to prevent these
recurrent problems.Regards, Robert Ward.

Re: [meteorite-list] Photo color issue update - colored scale cubes

2010-05-18 Thread Meteorites USA

Hi Mike, Greg, List,

A few people have asked me what lights to use for photographing
meteorites. I like to simplify and spend less cash on solutions so I use
a simple desk lamp.

This is the one I use...
http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/135512/Magnifier-Lamp-Black/

This one should work too... Not what I have but should work if it's full
spectrum (daylight bulb)...

http://www.staples.com/VisionMax-Black-Adjustable-Full-Spectrum-Magnifying-Clip-On-Desk-Lamp/product_612507

Full spectrum means WHITE. It's the closest thing to daylight you can
get indoors without actually going outdoors or buying a daylight bulb
from your local photo store.

These work, but then you have to buy the lamp too...
http://store.tabletopstudio-store.com/lightbulbs.html

The point is a white background, and the whiter the light the better
your meteorite photos. One day I'll get around to writing that article
on meteorite photography. ;)

Enjoy...

Regards,
Eric

It all depends on how you use your camera, if it's an SLR or a Point
Shoot. I don't flash at all, rather I like using a diffused full
spectrum light. $20 at your local Office Depot. Oh yeah and a plain
white piece of paper for the background. Simple. Everyone likes simple.

As for white balancing. Your camera's built in light meter reads
everything on average at 18% gray and white balances accordingly to
how bright or dark the subject/background/foreground is collectively.
A quick trick I use is to point the camera's focal point at the shadow
created by the meteorite while pressing the shutter button halfway,
thereby forcing the camera to use the gray to white balance. Wait for
the beep, this means it's focused, then while still holding the button
halfway I re-frame the meteorite in the center of the photo and fully
depress the shutter button.

Works every time... http://www.meteoritesusa.com/meteorite-photos/

Enjoy!

Re: [meteorite-list] Photo color issue update - colored scale cubes

2010-05-18 Thread Impactika
Sorry, Eric, I have to disagree.

A stark white background is ...well...too white. It makes for harsh shadows
and contrast. I much prefer a cream/ivory or photo-gray background. It
makes for a softer picture. And Never, Ever black, it is too strong a color,
it overwhelms whether you are taking a picture of.

And Yes, natural light is best. I always take my pictures in day-light,
even in Colorado, in winter. I am lucky enought to have a sun-room with full
south exposure. And a slightly hazy day is best.

And I use a Nikon.

Hi Mike, Greg, List,

A few people have asked me what lights to use for photographing
meteorites. I like to simplify and spend less cash on solutions so I use
a simple desk lamp.

This is the one I use...

This one should work too... Not what I have but should work if it's full
spectrum (daylight bulb)...

Full spectrum means WHITE. It's the closest thing to daylight you can
get indoors without actually going outdoors or buying a daylight bulb
from your local photo store.

These work, but then you have to buy the lamp too...

The point is a white background, and the whiter the light the better
your meteorite photos. One day I'll get around to writing that article
on meteorite photography. ;)

Enjoy...

Eric

Re: [meteorite-list] Photo color issue update - colored scale cubes

2010-05-18 Thread Meteorites USA

Hi Anne,

Thanks for your input... Personal preference on background color is just
that. I personally like white. Been selling online for over 10 years and
a white BG is the #1 rule for retail internet sales. Now if you're
talking about art, or a more elegant tone, then I would agree with you
that a less contrasting color works just fine. Perhaps I should have
been more clear in my explanation about why I use a white BG.

No disrespect intended of course.

Regards,
Eric

Sorry, Eric, I have to disagree.

A stark white background is ...well...too white. It makes for harsh shadows
and contrast. I much prefer a cream/ivory or photo-gray background. It
makes for a softer picture. And Never, Ever black, it is too strong a color,
it overwhelms whether you are taking a picture of.

And Yes, natural light is best. I always take my pictures in day-light,
even in Colorado, in winter. I am lucky enought to have a sun-room with full
south exposure. And a slightly hazy day is best.

And I use a Nikon.
