[meteorite-list] List Member Darryl Futrell (+2001, Aug 13)
Hello List, + Darryl Futrell - gone but not forgotten + Sun, 16 May 1999, Darryl sent me these lines: "I have been a rock collector since I was a kid and that bug finally provided me a car that would take me most anywhere in North America in my search for rare rocks. Over the next two and a half decades, I drove my Beetles and related vehicles about 1.5 million miles on trips to Canada, Mexico, twice to Kentucky, twice to Georgia, about 10 times to eastern Texas, and several times to volcanic sites way up north. Also included were dozens of week-end trips to Southern California deserts to hunt meteorites on dry lakes." Hi Barry, for big uNWAs Dean Bessey is the man to talk to. deanbes...@yahoo.com Cheers Werner Schroer I've seen several ugly large stones but for my brother's office, I am trying to find 3 to 8 kg stones with a great exterior. [meteorite-list] Perseids.
I stayed up all night to watch the Perseids. I laid back on a chaise lounge, put my IPod on, and looked up. I live in Prescott Valley AZ. which is about 5100 feet elevation, so the sky was dark and crystal clear. Well, it's now 5:00 in the morning and the eastern sky is starting to lighten, so I came in. All kidding aside, the Nininger toliet chip sounds like a very unique item. Mementos and artifacts associated with Nininger are very collectible. And if this chip came from the old museum, then I bet Twink has already had some offers on it. I'd be interested in hearing it's story. :) On 8/13/10, Ed Deckert wrote: > > I understand that this fragment has some good crust... > > - Original Message - > From: "Sean T. Re: [meteorite-list] Perseids.
We had clear skies here in southwest CO. I was out watching starting at about 9 PM. Saw an eyepopper of a meteor at about 9:15. Long tail, orange tint to it. I'm certainly no expert on meteors but sure looked to me like this one made it into dark flight. I've seen a daytime fireball and watched the big one that went over to California a while back at night but the first one I saw last night was by far more spectacular to see. Last night, I also watched several that were multiple pieces of 3 or more traveling side by side. They went pretty much directly overhead going north to south. For the last few years we had clouds during the Persieds. Nice to finally get to watch some of the shower. Re: [meteorite-list] 1993/94 Perseids---The Night of Lights!!
Hi All, I remember the ULTIMATE barrage of Perseids in 1993 I believe, or was it 1994wayyy up North at the boundary waters in Canada. We four guys got back from some night fishing and got set-up to watch the show. The skies were just crystal clear and black as any night I have ever seen! It was the most spectacular thing I have ever seen---indeed it was "The Night of Lights." Because we were so tired from a day of paddling, portaging and fishing though, we only watched for a little over an hour, and believe me, it was no more that 70-75 minutes MAX. In that time though, we counted over 125 confirmed meteors. At one point early on we were seeing 1 meteor every 10 seconds!!! Soif you compute 125 meteors in 70 minutes time, that is like 100 meteors per hour!! We saw many that left incredible trails too! This was seen by ALL 4 of us too---so it for sure can be corroborated!! It was just amazing! I'm not sure if we can ever top that again!! [meteorite-list] Selling a piece of the Berthoud Colorado meteorite
Hello list members, We have recently acquired the Berthoud, Colorado eucrite. Many of you remember this event on October 5, 2004 when a gorgeous 960 gram single mass landed just 96 feet away from Megan Whiteis moments after she stepped out of her house. Megan told me that she and her son heard a whooshing and whistling sound sort of like a sky rocket and she remembers seeing something black falling from the sky as they ducked for cover, startled by the sound and movement. She saw dirt fly up from the ground and a puff of dust where it landed in what is now their vegetable garden. A short walk to the site produced this amazing achondrite. This is one of only 8 witnessed, U.S., eucrite falls; very sexy and extremely rare. We need to say that we don't know where this stone is going to end up. It may go into museum collections. This piece is from the first cut. After classification and thin sectioning there is only a 900 gram mass remaining. We are offering a 1.8 gram partial slice with fusion crust on one edge for: $3000.00 If you have interest in this specimen please email us off list at: etmeteori...@hotmail.com Thanks very much, Edwin and Patrick Attached are a couple of links to Berthoud meteorite information. http://www.cloudbait.com/science/bermet.html http://www.colorado.edu/news/releases/2004/304.html __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

This may have been 1993 which was heralded as "1993: Year of the Perseids". Here's an excerpt from an article by Peter Brown and Jürgen Rendtel in the Sky & Telescope issue of January 1994, p. 34: The Perseid meteor shower last August was by far the most publicized in history. Television, radio, and newspapers devoted exceptional attention to the possible approach of a rare meteor storm. Twilight on August 11th saw traffic jams along country roads and at entrances to state parks, as thousands of people left light- polluted cities in search of dark skies. In Los Alamos, New Mexico, authorities prevented traffic problems by turning off city lights so residents could watch the show from their own yards. Astronomy club members everywhere found themselves in front of cameras and microphones explaining what they thought, or hoped, would happen. The Perseids themselves cooperated only in part. The shower did display an unusually intense peak of activity just a few hours after the time predicted. Counts made from western Europe, the Canary Islands, and eastern North America indicate the maximum zenithal hourly rate (ZHR) topped out at more than 300 around 3:30 Universal Time on August 12th. This time fell during late evening on August 11th for the eastern United States. (The ZHR is the standard based on continuous observing by a single person, an unobstructed view, naked-eye limiting magnitude of 6.5, and the shower radiant overhead.) This rate was far below meteor-storm levels. But by any other standard it was excellent, giving many experienced meteor watchers the best display of their lives, and leaving at least some of the public - those favorably placed under decent skies - happy with what they saw." -- Best wishes, Bernd __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
[meteorite-list] Meteorite hunting improves vigour and vitality in the aged. Also, The Perseids
The weather is clear and I'm all set up on my roof this year for the Perseids. I just finished rebuilding the whole deal. Soffits, fascia, removed two layers of asphalt shingles, replaced 16 pieces of 4x8 sheathing, etc. Not an easy task, Chicago weather has been hot and humid, but after all the complaints from the wife about meteorite hunting this spring in lieu of house and garden work I decided to impress the family with my new found vigor, gained by power walking through Wisconsin several times, and tackle the most fearsome household DIY job an out of shape 59 year old can contemplate. A comment from my daughter-in-law about me enjoying my twilight years was the last straw, lol. I survived but do not recommend this kind of work without your doctors permission. [meteorite-list] STOLEN meteorites - from Allen Shaw
Hello everybody, I have just received this email from Allen. Please read, and do let me know if you know anything. PS: for those of you who do not know Allen, he has found many meteorites, including: Independence, Delaware, St. Augustine, Hope Creek,.. and many more. Hello Anne, Has anyone by the name Marylin or Robert Wright approached you to sell some un-named meteorites? They are in possession of about ten of mine that were stolen from me back in 2006. One is a Pultusk with a photocopy of the original lable. The others are slices. I have tried to get back on the meteorite central list so I can announce it to everyone, but I guess it takes a while for Art to get around to it. Can you ask around and see if anyone else you might know has been approached by them? If so let them know that they were stolen from me almost 5 years ago. Re: [meteorite-list] 1993/94 Perseids - The Night of Lights!!
I know that the only thing that was really missing from that night of the Perseids in 1993 was that all four of us left the wives and girlfriends home during the fishing trip. Kirk wrote: "I remember the ULTIMATE barrage of Perseids in 1993 I believe, or was it 1994--wayyy up North at the boundary waters in Canada...The skies were just crystal clear and black as any night I have ever seen!...we counted over 125 confirmed meteors." This may have been 1993 which was heralded as "1993: Year of the Perseids". But by any other standard it was excellent, giving many experienced meteor watchers the best display of their lives, and leaving at least some of the public - those favorably placed under decent skies - happy with what they saw." -- Best wishes, Bernd __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

[meteorite-list] AD-Rumuruti, Howardite sales, ebay auctions
Aloha listoids, Due to economical constraints (partially imposed by the delay from Nomcom to approve several of my subs), I am prepared to offer some new material that is in the pipeline for classification, but not yet approved. * NWA x possible rumurutiite A 155g stone was purchased from Morocco in July 2010, and appears visually to be an R-chondrite with well defined chondrules and exotic clasts set in a mustard brown matrix. Pre-release sales are priced at $30-$35/g for this material, but I'll take another 10% off for metlist members. All slices come in a quality labeled display box with COA, and once approved a new COA with label will be mailed at no extra cost. http://bigkahuna-meteorites.com/NWAxRum.html * NWA x possible howardite A 485g lot of six stones were purchased from Morocco in July 2010, and appears to be a howardite, with stunning matrix with plagioclase-pigeonite clasts. Hi Gary and List, That is a gorgeous rumuruti stone. Classification might still be pending, but there is little doubt what that stone is by looking at the matrix. Hi Jeff, Marcin and List, Yes, that is a beautiful meteorite. I must have missed the first announcement of it. [meteorite-list] Ad - FREE DaG 476 Martian Shergottite, Sulagiri, and 30% off Big Irons
Greetings collectors and East Coast US nightowls, I put an asterisk (*) next to the post title, because there is a slight catch to this free offer. I have several specks of DaG 476 Martian shergottite left over and they are not big enough for me to use in a display and not big enough to keep in my personal collection. Together they probably weigh about 1mg or 2mg. It's not much, but it's green Mars "sand" and I can't bring myself to discard it. Heck, when lunars and martians first hit the market, a couple of milligrams of specks was a big deal. So, the next person who places an order through my online store will get a labelled gemjar containing these DaG 476 specks. There is no minimum order or other catches - just be the first person to place an order after I send this email to the list. I also have some left over dust and specks of various meteorites that are too small to sell or keep in my collection, so I will include these as well too. This includes some Bensour, Kilabo, a few NWAs, and some others that I cannot recall at the moment. (at least 5 or 6 different). The first buyer will get these as well. Don't forget to use coupon code "metlist" at checkout to get a 20% discount on your entire order - and yes, you can use this in combination with the free Mars offer. :) Also, for this weekend only, I am offering 30% OFF select large iron meteorites in my inventory - this includes all Campos over 1kg. Contact me off-list to get the discounted price on these irons. I have some nice pieces of Sulagiri that are fresh off the saw. One is a nice-sized chunk that could be further cut down into small part slices with a trimsaw. http://www.galactic-stone.com/product/sulagiri-witnessed-fall-ll6-chondrite-from-india-2008-slice-27g http://www.galactic-stone.com/product/sulagiri-witnessed-fall-ll6-chondrite-from-india-2008-slice-18g Talk of Nininger's toliet came up lately. Re: [meteorite-list] Marcin's new NWA 6256 diogenite (oddball)
I agree Mike. I've always found it amazing how different one Diogenite can look from the next. After recently researching the Vestan meteorites I personally find NWA 6256 to be an especially interesting one. I guess in some respects you could say that this is what a Diogenite "should" look like with its large, brecciated, coarse-grained crystals.
