Volcanic areas, estuaries, karst, doline, morin, marshes ... these areas are ungrateful to crater hunters. Anyway, meteors of any size can hit any place on Earth from the distant past or recent past. Apparently the end of the Pleistocene appears to be related to increased heat in the atmosphere, destabilizing global climate, caused by meteoritic impacts, and starting a new order of climate, the Holocene. Geologically recent -- I've been focusing my research on this period. The shallow, elliptical and aligned scars are possibly associated with the cyclical impact of meteoroids originating from a prehistoric fragmented comet. These elliptical craters can be found anywhere. Field studies and geological surveys are key in finding the first clues! Re: [meteorite-list] Cutting/Polishing services
Aloha list members, Sorry the original post slipped by me, but wanted to concur with Steve that Mike Gilmer's cutting and polishing services are top notch. He puts extra care and consideration in his work, which shows in the quality of the material that leaves his shop. Many of my offerings on ebay and the Big Kahuna website have been prepared by Mike and I've received many compliments from my customers, but ultimately the kudos should go to him. gary On Aug 21, 2010, at 7:39 PM, Steve Witt wrote: > Greetings List, > > Just a quick reply from someone who's used Mike's services. Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Museum update - call for help
Thanks for the interest, I am more then happy to answer questions and provide information about this. Yes I am using my collection to make up the bulk of the museums meteorites. However, several have been kind enough to offer samples on loan for display and there will be written agreements and the owners can pick them up, or ask for them to be returned at any point they wish. Loans will remain under the owners 100% control, while displayed safe and secure at the museum. Those that wish to donate samples to the museum and if it fails... While that is not something I have been thinking about too much (trying to keep positive) I have a basic plan in the case this was to happen. 1. I would first offer to return the sample to the donators. 2. If they did not want them back, I would give them to Appalachian State University to go into the schools collection where they would have a very nice permanent home. 3. I would keep the samples until another suitable location is found (up to the person who donated the sample) My collection is far from the largest or most impressive, but its something I am proud of and rather then have it sit in my living room I would like to share it with others. Thats the main thing that has driven me to do this, and the hope that it does well and others will do one in their area. (something I am more then willing to help and advise with) I am having security and full insurance done - that covers a good portion of risk. This is a learning project for me, its uncharted water and an uphill challenge... Thats something I have known from the start. As much as I hope this will do well, I do understand there is a chance for it to fail. That said, I feel this is something that needs to be done, and I also understand there is a good amount on the line. As long as I try my hardest and do what I feel is right, I will be able to accept whatever the outcome of this happens to be. As for an update... $365.00 of the $2600 has been raised so far. I want to send many thanks out to the people that are helping to support this vision... Hi Richard and List, What is the maximum apparent visual magnitude of this object? Is there any chance it could be glimpsed with a large amateur telescope? And while we are at it, what about 3467 Bernheim which is named after Robert Burnham Jr.? Best regards and clear skies, MikeG PS - we had one of those wicked Tampa lightning storms a few nights ago. Re: [meteorite-list] (meteorobs) Iranian Large Fireball During Perseids
Dirk reports large fireball over Iran. Well, chances are it wasn't a meteor. It was more likely the terminal stage of an Isreali MIRV. How's that song go? Re: [meteorite-list] Jack Horkheimer "Star Hustler" passes away
I agree---I always enjoyed his Star Hustler segments. I remember seeing him a lon time ago on a very old UFO documentary. He was bald then, and was interviewing an "abductee" under hypnosis. I think that is how he got started on TV.
