COSMOPIER has left a new comment on your post "Dennis Cox sees both holocene
impacts and ancient ...":

Hello to All

Yes, the region in Africa is fantastic -- excellent scenery for a science
fiction movie.
Volcanic areas, estuaries, karst, doline, morin, marshes ... these areas are
ungrateful to crater hunters.
Anyway, meteors of any size can hit any place on Earth from the distant past
or recent past.
Apparently the end of the Pleistocene appears to be related to increased
heat in the atmosphere, destabilizing global climate, caused by meteoritic
impacts, and starting a new order of climate, the Holocene.

Geologically recent -- I've been focusing my research on this period.
The shallow, elliptical and aligned scars are possibly associated with the
cyclical impact of meteoroids originating from a prehistoric fragmented
comet. These elliptical craters can be found anywhere.

Field studies and geological surveys are key in finding the first clues!

See a possible example below:

http://maps.google.com.br/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=pt-BR&geocode=&q=-7.957474,+-14.377563&sll=-8.167993,-13.930664&sspn=7.259659,9.832764&ie=UTF8&ll=-7.957492,-14.377584&spn=0.028391,0.038409&t=h&z=15

[ quick notes by Rich Murray ]

His impact-craters site has remarkable Google Earth and on the ground views
of many shallow oval craters:

http://maps.google.com.br/maps?hl=pt-BR&ie=UTF8&ll=-9.079934,-42.626299&spn=0.006759,0.009602&t=h&z=17

"The Capivara 0001 palaeolagoon where (2009) some siliceous clasts rocks,
possible impactites, were found.

Silliceous clasts rocks found on palaeolagoon Capivara 0001and Capivara
0004, possible impactites, in Sao Raimundo Nonato, Piaui (2009), Brazil.

The Quari palaelagoon, in Sao Raimundo Nonato south town, where (2004) a
layer of silliceous clasts rocks were found on the bottom layer of the lake,
at about 12,900 BP old sediment over a crystalline base rock, points to its
End-Pleistocene genesis."

I've found many similar porous, white, foamy rocks at shallow craters in New
Mexico.

http://ags.ou.edu/~bweaver/Ascension/ai-geol.htm

[ Barry Weaver gives many photos with detailed comments ]

"Pyroclastic deposits

Mafic and silicic pyroclastic deposits are distributed across much of
Ascension Island.
Most of Green Mountain is composed of pyroclastic deposits, both scoria and
pumice, and many of the lava flows in the western part of the island have a
thin pyroclastic veneer.
There have clearly been some very violent explosive silicic eruptions on
Ascension.

Many of the pyroclastic deposits show evidence of having been reworked by
water, suggesting that Ascension's climate was substantially wetter in the
past.
For example, Darwin recognized that the pyroclastic deposits which fill the
central depression in Devil's Riding School were deposited in a lake."

http://ags.ou.edu/~bweaver/Ascension/sa_geochem.htm

Comparitive composition of volcanic rocks from Ascension, St. Helena, and
Tristan

[ Precision elemental and isotopic studies were used. ]

"So not only are the sources for Ascension, St. Helena, and Tristan magmas
separate and distinct from each other, they also are separate and distinct
from the upper mantle that is the source for mid-ocean ridge basalt magmas."

Re: [meteorite-list] Cutting/Polishing services

2010-08-22 Thread Gary Fujihara
Aloha list members,

Sorry the original post slipped by me, but wanted to concur with Steve that
Mike Gilmer's cutting and polishing services are top notch. He puts extra care
and consideration in his work, which shows in the quality of the material that
leaves his shop. Many of my offerings on ebay and the Big Kahuna website have
been prepared by Mike and I've received many compliments from my customers, but
ultimately the kudos should go to him.

Hi All,

Yet another confirmed flash on Jupiter:

http://www.skyandtelescope.com/observing/home/101264994.html

Whatever it was, like the June 4th event earlier this year, no
residual trace (from UV to near-IR) has been found in the Jovian

[meteorite-list] Flattest Complete Meteorite

> Wow, that's what's called a flat one! The Hupés sell 'em?

There are actually two Al Mahbas pieces in my collection, one of these
came from John Birdsell and it is an endcut weighing 5.926 grams.

The other piece is this flat individual with a large olivine crystal that
I acquired from the Hupés. Maybe it is a flat, weathered piece that once
was part of a larger specimen.

I just recall another, extremely flat individual from my collection: Veevers,
IIAB,...a small, lenticular (or kidney-shaped) individual weighing 4.2 grams
from Eric Olson and measuring a mere 1.86 x 1.26 x 0.62 cm.

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Museum update - call for help

2010-08-22 Thread Greg Catterton
Thanks for the interest, I am more then happy to answer questions and provide
information about this.

Yes I am using my collection to make up the bulk of the museums meteorites.
However, several have been kind enough to offer samples on loan for display and
there will be written agreements and the owners can pick them up, or ask for
them to be returned at any point they wish. Loans will remain under the owners
100% control, while displayed safe and secure at the museum.

Those that wish to donate samples to the museum and if it fails...
While that is not something I have been thinking about too much (trying to keep
positive) I have a basic plan in the case this was to happen.

1. I would first offer to return the sample to the donators.
2. If they did not want them back, I would give them to Appalachian State
University to go into the schools collection where they would have a very nice
permanent home.
3. I would keep the samples until another suitable location is found (up to the
person who donated the sample)

My collection is far from the largest or most impressive, but its something I
am proud of and rather then have it sit in my living room I would like to share
it with others. Thats the main thing that has driven me to do this, and the
hope that it does well and others will do one in their area. (something I am
more then willing to help and advise with)

I am having security and full insurance done - that covers a good portion of
risk. This is a learning project for me, its uncharted water and an uphill
challenge... Thats something I have known from the start. As much as I hope
this will do well, I do understand there is a chance for it to fail. That said,
I feel this is something that needs to be done, and I also understand there is
a good amount on the line. As long as I try my hardest and do what I feel is
right, I will be able to accept whatever the outcome of this happens to be.

As for an update... $365.00 of the $2600 has been raised so far.

I want to send many thanks out to the people that are helping to support this
vision...
Dave Gheesling, Greg Hupe, Ron Hartman, Jerry Armstrong, Ray Watts, Carl Wong,
Rex Scates, Eric Wichman, Mike Gilmer and others who have sent emails of
encouragement... THANK YOU!

Here are some of the NWA meteorites available for sale to help fund this:
The weight is from left to right. I am asking for best offers on these.

415g (very nice with massive "fault" that is fusion crusted inside the crack
and not weathered. Kinda of looks like a rubble pile.

8kg - AWESOME stone, shows just how deep these things can hit and sink into the

Re: [meteorite-list] Jack Horkheimer "Star Hustler" passes away

2010-08-22 Thread Galactic Stone & Ironworks
Hi Richard and List,

What is the maximum apparent visual magnitude of this object? Is
there any chance it could be glimpsed with a large amateur telescope?

And while we are at it, what about 3467 Bernheim which is named after
Robert Burnham Jr.?

Best regards and clear skies,

MikeG

PS - we had one of those wicked Tampa lightning storms a few nights
ago. It felt like "shock and awe" outside the house.

Dirk reports large fireball over Iran.

Well, chances are it wasn't a meteor. It was more likely the terminal stage of
an Isreali MIRV. How's that song go? "Bom Bom Iran". :-)

2010-08-22 Thread Becky and Kirk
I agree---I always enjoyed his Star Hustler segments. I remember seeing him
a lon time ago on a very old UFO documentary. He was bald then, and was
interviewing an "abductee" under hypnosis.

I think that is how he got started on TV.
