Hi Dirk and all, btw. the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin has a good meteorite collection - and they do really a lot for education and public outreach. For example the lectures: "Mad about Meteorites" http://www.astronomy.ie/lecture200908.html That lecture is also available on DVD, if you want to add it to your collection (7€ are 9$) Uuuh I urgently have to order one! Re: [meteorite-list] Possible Ireland Meteorite Fall?
That's some good news that we don't have to wear those heavy lead suits anymore... ;) This is especially wonderful when you walk 10-20 miles a day in the 110 degree desert heat. Many people mistakenly think meteorites are radioactive. It's one of the more common misconceptions, and a question we all get from new meteorite enthusiasts and curios types. I hope this is Ireland's newest meteorite fall! Eric On 9/4/2010 7:27 AM, Robert Woolard wrote: Mike and List, Part of the news quote stated: " People can pick it up. That's going to make things so much more comfortable! Why didn't someone tell us this before? But, Mike, seriously thanks for the post. I do hope pieces end up being found. [meteorite-list] Possible Ireland Meteorite Fall?
Everyone have a good weekend. Mike http://www.herald.ie/national-news/hunt-for-meteorite-that-could-be-worth-euro100k-2323271.html Hunt for meteorite that could be worth €100k By Michael Lavery Friday September 03 2010 THE HUNT is on for a meteorite that could be worth more than its weight in gold. A fireball blazed across the night sky on Wednesday, leading astronomy experts to believe it came down somewhere here. Astronomy Ireland chairman David Moore said the discovery of a meteorite would be very rare -- only three meteorites have been found in Ireland in the past 200 years. A meteorite was last found in Ireland in 1999 when a Carlow woman found a handful of shattered meteorite pieces on a country lane near Leighlin Bridge. The collector who bought the fragments valued them at €100,000. Jammed Astronomy Ireland says its switchboard has been jammed with calls from members of the public who had witnessed the meteor shower. It says it should be able to pinpoint its general location within a week. "The meteorite will stand out because it has a burnt, smooth exterior," Mr Moore said. "People can pick it up. There is no kryptonite or any crazy substance that would poison or radiate a person." The group is urging those who saw the latest shower to visit www.astronomy.ie and fill in a Fireball Report Form to allow experts trace its path and identify possible landing sites. __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
