[meteorite-list] UA Catalina Sky Survey Discovers Possible Extinct Comet (596 Scheila)

2010-12-23 Thread Ron Baalke

http://uanews.org/node/36262

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA

December 23, 2010

Contact information follows this story.

UA Catalina Sky Survey Discovers Possible Extinct Comet

The extraterrestrial rock is tumbling through space alongside
thousands of similar objects in our solar system's main asteroid
belt, roughly between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.

An asteroid discovered more than 100 years ago my not be an
asteroid at all, but an extinct comet that is coming back to
life, according to new observations.

The night of Dec. 11, Steve Larson, senior staff scientist with
the Catalina Sky Survey, was searching for potentially hazardous
asteroids when he came across what looked like a comet: a faint,
wispy tail surrounding a bright, star-like core. Four images
taken over the course of 30 minutes revealed the object was
moving relative to the background stars.

Its brightness of a total magnitude of 13.4 visual, which is
about 900 times fainter than the faintest star you can see in a
clear, dark sky, led me to suspect that it was a known comet, but
I checked the comet database and got nothing, Larson said.

According to Larson, comets are thought to be a major source of
Earth's water, and extinct comets may be useful resources for
space exploration.

Further investigation revealed that the object was a known
asteroid called (596) Scheila, discovered in 1906. The
extraterrestrial rock is tumbling through space alongside
thousands of similar objects in our solar system's main asteroid
belt, roughly between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, out of the
ecliptic plane in which most planets and asteroids travel.

Catalina Sky Survey team member Alex Gibbs checked previous
images in the survey's archives but found no activity until Dec. 3.
At that time, the object appeared brighter and slightly diffuse.

Previous analysis of (596) Scheila's color indicated that it is
composed of primitive carbonaceous material left over from the
formation of the solar system and might be an extinct comet.

After the discovery was announced, the astronomical community
responded by pointing many of the world's largest telescopes at
the object to obtain images and spectra to determine if its tail
consists of ice and gases spewing out of the body or if it is
dust left behind from a collision with another asteroid.
Preliminary spectra of the outburst show that the coma surrounding
the asteroid is composed of dust, but more observations will be
needed to understand just what is happening with (596) Scheila.

Most asteroids are collision fragments from larger asteroids and
display a range of mineral composition, Larson explained. But
a fraction are thought to be former comets whose volatile ices
have been driven off by the sun. If the activity in Scheila
proves to be cometary in nature, this will be only the sixth
known main-belt comet, and about 100 times larger than
previously identified main belt comets.

In 1998, Larson founded the Catalina Sky Survey, a NASA-supported
project to discover and catalog Earth-approaching and potentially
hazardous asteroids. It operates two telescopes in the Catalina
Mountains and one in Australia and is currently discovering 70
percent of the world's known near-Earth objects, including one
that fell in northern Sudan in 2008.

Re: [meteorite-list] Carbonaceous Comet

2010-12-23 Thread Rob Matson
Hi Eric/List,

It is still unknown whether main belt asteroid (596) Scheila is a
long-dormant main-belt comet, or if it was simply an impact victim
by a much smaller (and therefore uncatalogued) asteroid. Actually,
these two hypotheses are not mutually exclusive, but I tend to
favor the latter explanation, given that Scheila has been observed
for a century and never exhibited comet-like behavior in the past.
Furthermore, one would expect a cometary outburst to occur closer
to perihelion, which Scheila won't reach for another 17 months.

It would not be the first time (even this year!) that a collision
caused a minor planet to temporarily appear comet-like:

http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/hubble/science/asteroid-20100202.html

The spectral studies of Scheila's coma so far indicate dust rather
than volatiles, lending further support to the impact hypothesis.
The morphology of the evolving coma may provide clues as to its
origin, and continued spectral analysis of the coma may reveal
ices, which would tip the scales back in favor of the dormant
comet theory (though quite possible a dormant comet that was
HIT by a much smaller uncatalogued object).

[meteorite-list] Mars Exploration Rovers Update - December 15-21, 2010

2010-12-23 Thread Ron Baalke

http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status.html

SPIRIT UPDATE: Spirit Remains Silent at Troy - sols 2471-2477,
December 15-21, 2010:

No communication has been received from the rover since Sol 2210 (March
22, 2010).

The project continues to listen for Spirit with the Deep Space Network
and Mars Odyssey orbiter for autonomous recovery communication from the
low-power fault case. The project is also conducting a paging technique
called Sweep Beep to stimulate the rover in the case of a
mission-clock fault. The period of peak solar insolation (energy
production) is not until mid-March 2011.

Total odometry is unchanged at 7,730.50 meters (4.80 miles).

OPPORTUNITY UPDATE: Rover Explores Santa Maria Crater -
sols 2451-2456, December 16-21, 2010:

Opportunity has arrived at the 80-meter (262-foot) diameter Santa Maria
crater, a stop on the way to Endeavour crater. The rover has begun
taking long-baseline stereo imagery.

This is part of a larger campaign that also includes in-situ (contact)
science, which is likely to extend through Solar Conjunction (through
early February 2011). In addition to a sophisticated wide-baseline
stereo imaging survey from several positions halfway around the crater,
the rover will explore minerals located around the southeast portion of
the crater using the instruments on the end of the rover's robotic arm.

Opportunity drove several times in the last week with drives on Sols
2451 (Dec. 16, 2010), 2452 (Dec. 17, 2010), and 2454 (Dec. 19, 2010), to
get into position for imaging. Another morning Ultra-High Frequency
(UHF) relay pass was sequenced and executed successfully on Sol 2456
(Dec. 21, 2010), returning 71 Mbits of data.

As of Sol 2456 (Dec. 21, 2010), solar array energy production was 595
watt-hours with an atmospheric opacity (Tau) of 0.727 and a solar array
dust factor of 0.6407.

Total odometry is 26,467.74 meters (26.47 kilometers, 16.45 miles).

[meteorite-list] Opportunity Studying a Football-Field Size Crater

Opportunity Studying a Football-Field Size Crater
Jet Propulsion Laboratory
December 23, 2010

On Dec. 16, 2010, NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity reached a
crater about the size of a football field-some 90 meters (295 feet) in
diameter. The rover team plans to use cameras and spectrometers during
the next several weeks to examine rocks exposed at the crater,
informally named Santa Maria.

A mosaic of image frames taken by Opportunity's navigation camera on
Dec. 16 shows the crater's sharp rim and rocks ejected from the impact
that had excavated the crater.

Opportunity completed its three-month prime mission on Mars in April
2004 and has been working in bonus extended missions since then. After
the investigations at Santa Maria, the rover team plans to resume a
long-term trek by Opportunity to the rim of Endeavour Crater, which is
about 22 kilometers (14 miles) in diameter.

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute
of Technology in Pasadena, manages the Mars Exploration Rover Project
for the NASA Science Mission Directorate, Washington. For more
information about the mission, see http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov .

[meteorite-list] Barwell, the Christmas Eve Meteorite

2010-12-23 Thread bernd . pauli
Happy Birthday, Barwell!

Bernd (in Germany at 00.35 local time ;-)

--

On December 24, 1965, a Christmas present of sorts fell to the ground around
16:20 hrs, when a brilliant fireball swept across southern England from a south
-southwesterly direction and landed in Barwell accompanied by a tremendous
explosion caused by the exploding meteorite that went down in history as the
Christmas Eve meteorite.

The bolide must have been extremely bright. Some eyewitnesses say it was
brighter
than the sun, others say it was almost twice as bright as Venus. There are also
reports
of color changes during atmospheric descent.

Local residents noted a large explosion, the sky suddenly lit up, a whizzing
noise was
heard, there was a loud roar, a low rumbling noise, a screaming sound from a
low-flying
object directly overhead, a loud rustling noise after the explosion, a sudden
thud as
something hit the ground, a terrible crack, and also electrophonic phenomena.

When one local picked up a strange-looking stone about as big as his hand, he
immediately
threw it down again because it felt warm. This stone had even left a small
crater in the
asphalt road.

Another Barwell resident found a dent in the hood of his automobile and a
white stone
on the ground weighing between six and seven pounds.

News of the actual fall was slow to spread but when it did, hell broke loose
because
the British Museum had promised financial rewards for each and every find.
Several
larger fragments and innumerable small stones were located by field parties and
local
residents.

While initial disruption occurred at an altitude of about 25 miles, final
disruption probably
occurred at a very low altitude above Barwell.

The Barwell L5 chondrite has a gray interior, numerous FeNi specks and grayish
chondrules
that give it a mottled look. Interestingly, some of the fragments at Barwell
came in from slightly
different directions - maybe due to strong winds high up in the atmosphere
because a distinct
smoke trail rapidly disappeared.

A 17-pounder made a perfectly vertical hole in sandy loam soil to a depth of 27
inches.
A 14 ½ ounce fragment penetrated the roof of a local factory.
A 7-pound piece lay in an 18-inch hole.
A 6-pound chunk was found in a factory backyard partly buried in a cinder heap!

threw it down again because it felt warm.

 Several
larger fragments and innumerable small stones were located by field parties
 and local
 residents.

While initial disruption occurred at an altitude of about 25 miles, final
 disruption probably
occurred at a very low altitude above Barwell.

The  Barwell L5 chondrite has a gray interior, numerous FeNi specks and
 grayish chondrules
that give it a mottled look. Interestingly, some of the fragments at Barwell
 came in from slightly
different directions - maybe due to strong winds high up in the atmosphere
 because a distinct
 smoke trail rapidly disappeared.

A 17-pounder made a perfectly vertical hole in sandy loam soil to a depth of
 27 inches.
A 14 ½ ounce fragment penetrated the roof of a local factory.
A 7-pound piece lay in an 18-inch hole.
A 6-pound chunk was found in a factory backyard partly buried in a cinder
 heap!

[meteorite-list] OT: Some humor for your holidays

2010-12-23 Thread Rob Matson
Hi All,

At the slight risking of offending any Scrooges w/o a sense of humor,
I forward the following Christmas observation.

Happy Christmas/Festivus/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa/Winter Solstice to All!

May Santa put a nice lump of coal (a CI/CO/CK/CM/etc. qualifies!)
in your stocking...

The Illegal Immigrant Amongst Us

Every December 24, the illegal immigrant known as Santa Claus crosses
the border without a passport, carrying concealed packages, which he
presumably sneaks into the U.S. in order to avoid tariffs and inspection
by Customs. What's really in that huge sack? Homeland Security has never
asked and habitually turns a blind eye to this invasion!

Look at how this international fugitive gets around: Santa Claus flies
in a custom-built sleigh that hasn't been inspected by the FCC nor
cleared by Air Traffic Control. He flies beneath radar and never files a
flight plan. He has no pilot's license, and he flies in the dark of
night with just one tiny bioluminescent red light to guide him - a clear
violation of safety regulations!

Imagine those pulling Santa's heavy sleigh: Eight tiny reindeer, a
protected species being put to hard labor. None of these reindeer have
their required inoculations, and Santa's never gotten these
genetically-engineered animals registered and licensed. He keeps them
penned outside his workplace in below-freezing temperatures, in a clear
violation of animal protection laws. Where is the ASPCA while all this
is going on?

And the conniving, crooked Claus harms more than just animals; he's
hurting hard-working people, too. Santa's Workshop is a clever
cover-up for a sweatshop, where non-union employees make less than
minimum wage and apparently get no overtime holiday pay. Add the fact
that no one has ever been allowed to inspect the place, and it's obvious
that you have a Third-World elf-exploitation operation.

In addition, he maintains a data base of personally-identifying
information about our children! Names, addresses, ages, photos,
behavioral tendencies. Incredibly, parents appear to be complicit in
perpetuating this cultural phenomenon; Child Protection Services has yet
to be informed of these offenses.

The bottom line is that Santa has been allowed to maintain a monopoly
over a massive toy distribution industry; he's cornered the Christmas
Eve gift market. Santa dares to give away his products for free in a
sinister attempt to crush all competition - just like Microsoft's
Internet Explorer. There has been no Antitrust Lawsuit, yet it's clear
that Santa Claus is the Bill Gates of Christmas.

However, it might be tough sledding for Jolly St. Nick this Christmas,
if someone points out this oversight to our legislators. After all,
Santa Claus is honest, reliable, and gives us something to look forward
to every December 25th. Considering the gifts bequeathed to us on April
15th, it's a Christmas Miracle that Santa's still in business.
