Re: [meteorite-list] NASA's Kepler Mission Discovers Its First RockyPlanet

2011-01-10 Thread lebofsky
Hi Everyone:

An update. Geoff Marcy gave an invited talk this evening at the meeting I
am at (American Astronomical Society). The density of the "new" planet is
8.8 +/_ 2.5 g/cc (iron meteorites are 7-8). The large uncertainty (not bad
given the size of the object) implies that the planet can be anywhere from
a more compressed "Earth" (similar composition, but denser due to greater
mass) to an object made up of 75% iron (closer to Mercury in composition).

I find that interesting given that the star it orbits (and thus the star
system) is iron poor relative to the Sun. There is something new every
day!

[meteorite-list] PayPal Shipping Labels - Anyone else having problems today?

2011-01-10 Thread Galactic Stone and Ironworks
Hi List,

All day long (since noon today), I have been trying to print shipping
labels through PayPal, but when I try it says "PayPal shipping is not
available, we apologize for the inconvenience."

Has anyone else been having this problem today?

This is really aggravating, because I have a stack of packages that I
need to mail out, but I obviously can't since I cannot print shipping
labels. Yes, I know, I could take them up to the post office, stand
in line for an hour, and ship them the old fashioned way, but I am
spoiled on printing my own labels and putting the packages in my
mailbox.

I just tried again, and I keep getting the same error message. I
guess if this isn't resolved by tomorrow, I'll have to drag my
happy-ass down to the post office and stand in line. For those who
are not familiar with the Lutz Florida post office, you have not seen
incompetence and inefficiency until you have seen my local post office
branch. That is why I dread going there.

Best regards,

MikeG

2011-01-10 Thread Robert Woolard
Thanks for making these posts, and congrats to Paul and Larry. Great story,
Ruben.

I've never had the pleasure of hunting with Paul, but I can attest to Larry's
pure determination! His wild enthusiasm is contagious out in the (strewn)field.
( He almost started to do handstands when he found his first Mifflin stone, and
probably would have, if he hadn't already logged so many miles that day. ) Very
enjoyable person to hunt with.

Good luck, guys, on future finds!

Sincerely,
Robert Woolard

[meteorite-list] Free Moon Trip

2011-01-10 Thread J Sinclair
Here is a link to Dr E. A. King's book "Moon Trip: A Personal Account
of the Apollo Program and its Science"

It's a free download from The Lunar and Planetary Institute's website
http://www.lpi.usra.edu/publications/books/moonTrip/index.shtml

Dr. King was a Harvard graduate and a geologist at the University of
Houston who specialized in meteorites. He trained Apollo astronauts
and was the first curator of the Lunar Sample Laboratory while working
at NASA.

Chapter IV is a fun read on Tektites and Meteorites

Here is an excerpt:

“….While unsuccessfully searching for a meteorite fall close to
Crosby, Texas, I heard on the car radio about a very bright fireball
witnessed in southern New Mexico, Texas, and northern Mexico. I
returned to my office and asked my secretary, who was fluent in
Spanish, to place some phone calls for me. I first contacted a news-
paper editor in Chihuahua City. We had a lengthy conversation about
the phenomena accompanying the meteorite fall but no speci-mens had
fallen near Chihuahua City. Finally, I asked him the right question:
"Do you know anyone who has any pieces of the meteorite?" "Oh yes," he
said, and suggested that I call the newspaper editor in Hidalgo del
Parral, much further to the south. My secretary located Sr. Ruben
Rocha Chavez, editor of Correo del Parral. He recounted how a
brilliant fireball had broken apart with a loud explosion in the
middle of the night and had showered fragments over a large area near
Parral. Chavez had several pieces of the meteorite on his desk and
described them to me. There was no doubt- he had fragments of a
freshly fallen stony meteorite! He invited me to visit Parral to see
his pieces and to collect specimens. I thanked him for the information
and his invitation and told him I would be there as soon as possible.
A quick check of airline schedules showed it was not going to be easy
to get to Parral……

….I was astonished when I saw the two big meteorite pieces on the
editor's desk. One weighed more than 30 pounds. The greatest surprise
was the meteorite type---a rare carbonaceous chondrite….

There are also additional books available for free -
http://www.lpi.usra.edu/publications/books.shtml

I haven't kept up with all the posts in a while - excuse this
duplicate if this was recently mentioned

[meteorite-list] Historic Kapoeta Howardite Thin Sections and 12 more Locations - AD

2011-01-10 Thread J Sinclair
Hi List,

I have a couple of thin sections that were recently made from the
last piece of the Kapoeta Howardite I have from the Dr. E A King
collection. I bought several epoxy embedded pieces of Kapoeta from
Meteorite Man Steve Arnold about a decade ago. These were part of
the pieces that supplied the thin sections that were used in multiple
research articles.

Here are links to some of those papers:

Kapoeta thin sections I sold to Jeff Hodges many years ago.

I also have some other thin sections I would like to get
moved to new homes.

2011-01-10 Thread Robert Verish
Hi Ruben,
That definitely IS a "funny" story because it had a happy ending.
(No doubt, Paul was happier the 2nd time he found his meteorite ;-)

Thanks for sharing another one or your many meteorite-hunting anecdotes.
Paul's success at Red Lake is one of those examples of a very talented
metal-detectorists having no trouble making the transition to drylake hunting
by eyeball-only. That's because the better hunters, like Paul, hunt with their
eyes AND ears while listening to their metal detector.

Larry Atkins is another hunter that can be included in that group. I'm sure
the story of his find is equally interesting, because Larry, never one to be
out-done, went OFF of the dry lake to find his meteorite!
Another example of "hunt where no one else would go" like when he made his
massive Holbrook find.

So many great stories...
Bob V.

Note that this new planet has a density of about 8, so not really
terrestrial as such, but more a VERY large iron!

[meteorite-list] Eating your way around Tucson!

2011-01-10 Thread John Teague
Fellow list members!

With Tucson fast approaching, I am already looking forward to the great food
available there! Below are some suggestions that you might try if you're a
first (or near first!) time visitor. This list has been put together with over
twenty years of attending the shows. These are my opinions (well, my wife,
Cookie, too!) only. I have no vested interest in any of these establishments,
no free food, etc! I just like good food! Maybe you will find my/our tastes
different from yours but all of these are worth a try!

One list member ask me for my favorites. I lost the e-mail. And I don't know
which list it was either. Thus, everyone must endure this!

* Pat's Drive In, 1202 West Niagara Street, 520-624-0891
I should not list this first, but I AM! I first read about Pat's in Arizona
Highways magazine. It is a tradition in Arizona! It is on a side street off
N. Grande Ave, between Speedway and St. Marys. It is near the condo that we
rent each year. I had driven within half a block of it for years and did not
know it existed! If you like the old drive in restaurants, this IS the place
for you! If you like greasy fries by the pound, this is for you! If you like
GREAT chili hotdogs, this IS the place for you, please note that they have
three degrees of heat for their chili!

We have three "favorites" that we think everyone should try at least once. In
no particular order:

* La Fuente Restaurant, 1749 N. Oracle Rd., 520-623-8659
REALLY good Mexican/Tex-Mex food. The lunch buffet is very good and very
reasonable. If you're there for dinner, be sure to order the Guacamole made
table-side. It is VERY GOOD!

* Silver Saddle Steak House, 6th Ave. & I-10 (310 E. Benson Highway),
520-622-6253
This place is near downtown and has some of the best steak that I've had in
Tucson. If you're going for dinner, it is best to get there early or be
prepared to wait 30 minutes to an hour. It IS worth the wait! I do not think
that they take reservations.

* Lil Abner's Steakhouse, 8501 N Silverbell Rd., 520-744-2800
This is a MUST for Tucson show visitors. I remember going there a lot of years
ago when this place was truly "in the middle of nowhere"! If you go this year,
you'll she how that has changed. It use to be a drive out into the desert!
Any of the show weekends will have tons of show folks there! The steaks rival
Silver Saddle but everything is served with a salad, beans, and bread! LOVE
the atmosphere there!

Other recommendations:

Breakfast recommendations:
* Blue Willow, 2616 N. Campbell Ave. Tucson, AZ 520-327-7577
If you want to take time for a nice, leisurely breakfast, this is THE place!
Food is great, prices are reasonable. It is in a house converted to a
restaurant.

* Los Betos Mexican Food, 914 E Speedway Blvd, 520-884-5291 and 32 N Campbell
Ave 520-628-7462 plus several other around town.
If you're looking for something that will keep you going through MOST of a day
visiting shows without having to stop to eat lunch, try the burritos at any Los
Betos! There are many breakfast burritos available and VERY reasonably priced.
Last year the one on Speedway was closed for remodeling. I hope it has
reopened as it is so convenient to several of the shows. Look for a Los Betos!

Fun evening choice:
* Chuy's Baja Broiler, 3100 E Speedway Blvd, 520-326-4969  plus several other
around town!
Good food, GREAT chip and salsa bar, but if you go, you MUST the pitcher of
Margaritas! Don't order a pitcher just for yourself IF you are driving! 'Nuff
said!

Tradition choices:
El Charro Cafe, Bar Toma! & Gift Shop, 311 N. Court Ave., 622-1922
This place has been in business since 1922 in Tucson! That says it all! The
restaurant is located in the original family home in the El Presidio
Historic District.

El Minuto Cafe, 354 S. Main Ave., 882-4145
This is my wife's favorite for Mexican food!

Mi Nidito Cafe, 1813 S. 4th Ave.; 622-5081
I have not visited this one but it comes HIGHLY recommended by locals. We
tired to get in a couple of times and the wait was between 1 and 2 hours!

I'm sure there are other great places to eat. We are open for suggestions! I
hope others will offer their suggestions!

Bon appetit! (Being from Tennessee, I'm not quite sure what that means ... but
it sounds good!)

Hope to see you in Tucson!

[meteorite-list] Eating your way around Tucson! ADDITION!!!!!!

2011-01-10 Thread John Teague
Sorry guys, but I would not forgive myself if I forgot to mention this place!
If you good home cooking, this is for you!

* Country Folks Restaurant, 1015 East Benson Highway, 520-622-8844
This is right next door to Marty Zinn's show at the Quality Inn on Benson Hwy.
They have a very reasonable priced buffet for all three meals! Good food and
plenty of it. We usually try to schedule a couple of days around Country Folks
for breakfast or lunch! Really nice folks! I must say that sometimes the
buffet is not up to par after the "regular" breakfast or lunch times. Other
times it is GREAT! And you can walk next door to or from the show!

Hope to see you in Tucson!

2011-01-10 Thread Ruben Garcia
Thanks for mentioning this Bob!

Believe it or not, this was Pauls very first find by sight alone. It
was kinda funny how it happened

I had just met him (and friend Mike Morgan) at Red Lake intending to
show them how to find meteorites by sight alone. After just a few
minutes of searching Paul walked over with this little beauty and
said, " Ruben, would you look at this, I doubt it is a meteorite."

I replied, "You have got to be kidding!"

Paul misinterpreted what I said and assumed that he was somehow being
ridiculous with his first attempt. Feeling frustated, he quickly
snatched it from my hand and drop kicked it as far as he could.

I screamed, NO PAUL, It's a meteorite!

After, retreaving the stone he was very happy, and now to have it
classified I'm sure he it doubly so!

Congrats, to Larry Atkins too! (I had nothing to do with his find, He
is very good!)

Re: [meteorite-list] NASA's Kepler Mission Discovers Its First RockyPlanet

2011-01-10 Thread Sterling K. Webb

This is the top item on a list of Kepler "hits" waiting
to be verified by ground-based telescopes. The list is
roughly 700 "hits" long and we can expect a minimum
of 500 to be confirmed.

There are more hits in the data being teased out,
so we can expect a flood of planets to be slowly confirmed
and dribbled out. Planet-O-Rama!

is very exciting. The amount I have read about this fall isnt much, but I
have been able to piece the write ups I have read and can conclude that

2011-01-10 Thread Galactic Stone and Ironworks
Hi Jim,

Wow, how the heck did this make the news? No offense, because it's a
fine specimen and the exposure will surely bring in some bidding. But
how is this different than the thousands of other meteorites sold on
eBay every day, for thousands of dollars each?

The media is a fickle mistress. LOL

Until further notice, I am suspending sales of anything from the asteroid belt.

Best regards,

Re: [meteorite-list] Bolide over Germany

2011-01-10 Thread Martin Altmann
Yes Sir!

The bolide was caught by a fireball camera (btw. a private one run by a
meteorite collector, as it happens outside the recording time of the
European Fireball Network stations).

Now the private collectorship here is already calculating and collecting
eye- and earwitness reports
and determined already a preliminary possible dropping zone and organizes a
team for searching.

To publish the photos, data here ect. we have to leave it to the list
member, who caught the bolide and who made the calculations.

Grateful we are to live in a civilized meteorite country and not in
Australia, Argentina or South Africa,
where such efforts can't be undertaken at all and won't happen.
Naturally the chances to find the meteorite are low, but s much higher
than in these countries, where such droppers would remain unrecorded,
unnoticed and where nobody would try to hunt them down, because nobody is
allowed to do so, but a very few, who don't do it.

...and therefore I think, Stuttgart definitely deserves a new fall so much
more than Perth ;-)

Let's be thrilled!
Martin

(PS: Gary, it's strange, that Argentina and Poland introduced such laws,
that's atypical for mainly catholic countries. An exception to my newest
thesis, that the Bevanism could be an extreme form of Ussherism).

Are there any metlist members who witnessed this, or have knowledge of it to
