2011-01-28 Thread al mitt

Hi Walter,

A non-scientist chiming in. A while back we had this discussion when someone
was promoting their material and used this as a possible selling point. I
believe in the end based on sited scientific papers it was mostly agreed
there is not any real proof of the angrite material coming from Mercury.

I have included some reference material for your and other list member's
reading by scientists on this subject.

Hello Everyone,

As the subject line indicates, I would like to know what the scientists on
the list think about the idea that the Angrites parent planet is the
planet Mercury. I would really like to know their opinion. Yes. No.
Maybe?

And why or why not? Characteristics of magnetism, oxygen isotopic ratios,
density, chemical composition? What have you.

What are the data to support your conclusion?

I would very much like to hear from scientists who have actually handled
this material. Not non-scientists (such as myself), scientist wannabes,
scientists spokespeople, name droppers, etc. Just scientists.

Re: [meteorite-list] The Most Interesting Meteorite Man in the World

2011-01-28 Thread Michael Gilmer
Greetings List Members,

Having just returned from another of my global expeditions, I thought
I would share a few more of the reasons why I am the Most Interesting
Meteorite Man in the World.

My list of meteorites won a Pulitzer prize.

Mike Farmer has nothing but good things to say about me.

The Catalogue of Meteorites is my biography.

I am the central uplift of every crater.

I once traded a slice of Old Woman for something younger and better-looking.

During the Tucson show, hotels scramble to reserve me.

The Labennes tried to conceal the coordinates of my summer home.

Best regards and happy huntings,

MikeG

[meteorite-list] The Most Interesting Meteorite Man in the World

2011-01-28 Thread JoshuaTreeMuseum

MikeG; excellent comedic writing, funniest stuff I've read in a long time.

--

Instead of pumice, my wife prefers to use nakhlite to exfoliate her feet. So
I'm down at the museum having the scientists cut a 400 gram block out of the
back of the Lafayette meteorite for her, when lo and behold, I spot the
world's first interstellar meteorite amongst the collection! The idiots had
it mis-labeled as a brachinite. After running a few tests, I determined it
originated in the asteroid belt of Proxima Centauri and was composed of pure
compressed cosmic dust. When my wife mentioned she was bored with her
regular mud pack of ground up Tagish Lake, the scientists insisted we take
half of the proximite to replace it. As we were leaving, a NASA guy gave us
a multi-kilo basalt rock picked up by Neil Armstrong on the lunar maria to
use in our aquarium. Then when I get home, I discover that the Danish
National Museum had installed the Agpalilik in the lobby of my mansion. They
explained they just had it sitting around outside and thought it might look
nice in my home, which is constructed entirely of NWA meteorites, each one
individually shaped by an Amish master stone cutter.

[meteorite-list] Tuscon help/info

2011-01-28 Thread Greg Catterton
Hi all. I am thinking of heading out for Tuscon either tonight or tomorrow.
Will be a 2 day drive, but I dont like to fly...

My wife has to work so I will be traveling with my 2 kids, one is 8 the other
turned 4 today!
Was planning on a stay close by, but it did not pan out, the only other option
is about 3 hours one way from the area of the show... Having my kids keeps me
from crashing in the car or camping out.

Anyone in the area... is there reasonable priced ($60 or under per night) rooms
within an hour still? Not looking to sell from it, only need it as a place to
lay our heads for the night.
Would anyone have a extra room or floor me and the kids could use for the 3-4
days I will be there?

2011-01-28 Thread cdtucson
Hello list,
I have been attending this Tucson Gem show every year since 1989 and today tops
them all.
Today at the Tucson Gem show I just saw the most amazing meteorite I have ever
seen before. ET has on display the main mass of D'Orbigny. I thought I'd seen
everything. Seeing this meteorite up close blew me away.
If their really is a *king* of angrites then D'Orbigny has got to be the *God
of Angrites*.Perhaps the God of all meteorites.
pictures don't do this thing justice. It is a must see. Absolutely amazing.
No need to even try to post a picture. You just have to see it in person. Huge
Pale colored opaque Olivine crystals. Yes Opaque olivine. And ET is one of the
nicest guys you'd ever want to meet.
