[meteorite-list] Meteorite crater found on mount Ararat?

2011-02-13 Thread Michael Groetz
http://www.sott.net/articles/show/223395-Meteorite-crater-found-on-mount-Ararat-

Tue, 08 Feb 2011 08:31 CST

Astrophysicists Vahe Gurzadyan from the Yerevan Physics Institute in
Armenia and Sverre Aarseth from the University of Cambridge in the UK,
discovered an unrecorded crater that raises the possibility that the
biblical mountain Ararat was struck by a meteorite.

A British scientific publication OBSERVATORY will soon publish an
article about the discovery. However, after appearing on the
University Cornell website it had already spread around the world.

Mount Ararat is an ancient, isolated volcano in eastern Turkey near
the borders with Armenia.

The northern and western slopes of the mountain are closed to public
but somehow the two physicists gained access.

At an altitude of 2100 metres, at coordinates 39˚ 47' 30''N, 44˚ 14'
40''E, they found a well-preserved and previously unrecorded crater
some 70 metres across. Gurzadyan and Aarseth think that it is the
result of a meteorite impact. They rule out a glacial origin on the
grounds that 2100 metres is well below the glacier line.

Gurzadyan and Aarseth publish their account with the intention of
attracting interest so that the crater can be properly classified.

2011-02-13 Thread karmaka

Hi

please do not do what the Russian villagers of Novo-Urei did on September 4,
1886.
They thought that the meteorite which had just fallen was 'Manna', some kind of
sweet gift from God, and ate fragments of it.
The effect of this cosmic cure is unknown...
Something similar happened in Uganda in 1992 with the Mbale meteorite.

DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME !!! ;-)

Get well soon!

Hello Listers,

I am doing this post because I am sick as a dog but also to see what funny
responses this post might get. I was wondering if I could use any of my
meteorites and place them on my body to make me feel better or if any Lister
have any funny stories about this topic. Where I used to work in Manhattan I
gave the manager a Tagish Lake meteorite fragment and he would always kid
around about the meteorite I gave him. He would say what I am suppose to do
with this meteorite NuShawn, rube it on my body if I am sick TOO FUNNY.
And I would say. yes... But till then I think these blueberry pancakes I
just made will have to do for now to make me feel better.

Here is a link I found meteorites for healing.

Aloha everyone,

Actually I believe that the power of the mind is a better tool for healing ones
illnesses. We still dont have the faintess idea of how much of the power in our
brains we actually use. Somewhere I think it is less than 10%, correct me if I
am wrong. The Japanese and Chinese use meditation as a form of self-healing and
I know that quite a few of the older Hawaiians do the same. Amazing things
happen if you Put your mind to work for you.

Aloha and God bless,

[meteorite-list] AD: Gemmology of Vesta - Blossoms of Planetary Poetry

2011-02-13 Thread Martin Altmann
Dear Passionates,

today we make something different than usual - curious as we are, we want to
test whether facebook could be something for us and launched our special
offer there.

For the impatient ones - here already the link:
http://kuerzer.de/VestaGems

But don't worry, if you're not familiar with or if facebook is suspect to
you,
just give us a note, and we immediately will send you a private email
with pictures prices of all available specimens.

For that experiment we chose quite the most fabulous material which was
readily prepared at hand.

A few of you will remember our NWA 5478.
That incredible eucrite with such a diversity of appearances, from a perfect
Moon mimicry, to patterns you rather would expect on the catwalks of Paris
or Milano,
up to picture puzzles of fine art:

http://www.chladnis-heirs.com/euc-face.jpg

We were lucky to gather a longer while ago a few marbles of this material
more.
Or to say it like it should be correct:
Some stones which we personally strongly believe to be paired to NWA 5478.

Of course they will be correctly classified and they will obtain an own
NWA-number.

In fact we rather would have waited until we got the number, before we'd
think about setting them on sale,
but when we showed that specimen:
http://www.chladnis-heirs.com/1_062gb.jpg

..the collectors urged us to offer them already in advance.

We always sincerely hoped to get one day a larger stone of that material,
without doubts such a specimen would be from the beginning on: legend.
Alas, three years waiting yielded nothing more than these few pebbles, less
than a small handful.
If you keep in mind, that on a find site or in a strewnfield always the
largest stones are picked up first and the smallest found last, we're not
confident that our dream ever will come true.
However.
As small as the marbles are, it is certainly one of the finest HEDs, the
deserts ever spat out.

23 specimens we have for sale.
All are true astonishing gems. All are polished half-stones.

The price per gram is higher than for average eucrites,
but because the weights of the gems are so small,
the overall-prices for the specimens are very comfortable.

They rank between 51$ and 180$ per piece,
two are larger and cost 500$ and 700$.

Only with the best specimen of the whole new series we will make an
exception,
and will have a kind of an private auction without hurry.
Highest bid will fetch it, increments are 10$,
Secret maximum bids remain secret and will automatically used only to that
extent necessary to hold the leading bid.
http://www.chladnis-heirs.com/1_062gb.jpg
And that, until nobody wants to bid more. With fair warnings.
Hence without battles in the last 10 seconds.

We're quite in the beginning at 90$ now.

Duration - a day will be enough, but also necessary, for the Japanese and
Australian collectors having a chance too.

So again,
Don't be shy to ask us for an email, if you don't like facebook.
Alone the pictures you HAVE to see, they are a delight.

Have all a fine and relaxing Sunday!

[meteorite-list] Public Outreach: Thanks and TRADE request

2011-02-13 Thread Richard Kowalski

Hello all.

Apologies for this cross post.

You may remember a request I put out before the Tucson Shows for meteoritic
material to be used for Public Outreach at the Catalina Sky Survey's telescopes
and for visitors to the meteorite lab at LPL.

We were the beneficiary of some unexpected generosity by a few people. I'm not
sure if they want their donations known publicly, so for now I hope they'll
accept my public thanks on these forums.

I will say that when I handed Dolores Hill the bags of meteorites for the U of A
meteorite lab's outreach, she too was overwhelmed by the generosity of the donors.

One of the donors also provided us with five CV stones totaling about 155g. I
also have three specimens that I purchase in the past year as well. In total
these 8 stones weigh in at 296.3g.

I am still looking for a single CV hand specimen for use with our PO programs
that is somewhere between 300 - 500g in size.. I would like to offer the 8
stones I already have as trade in whole or in part for a single hand sized specimen.

I'm willing to pay the difference in cost to obtain a single stone.

If you have a CV-type stone (my preference would be for a stone with a dark
matrix with colorful chondrules visible on the surface) that you are willing to
part with please contact me privately.

Thank you all for your consideration of this request and especially to those who
have already donated generously to our cause.

sides with great thumb printing, a bottom side with more of a rough/bumpy
texture, and a fractured back side w/slickenslides and some slight
 roll-over
lipping and secondary crust. Needles to say, a wonderful piece. I have

[meteorite-list] Looking to Buy. Trying to complete my type set

2011-02-13 Thread Richard Kowalski
Hello all,

Though I've been collecting meteorites on and off, my desires took over a
little over two years ago. Since then my primary collecting interests have
centered around building a meteorite type set. In the last two years I have
nearly completed the task, and am only missing a handful of types to make the
collection complete.

As such I'd like to put my want list out there and see if anyone might have
what I am looking for.

At the top of my want list are the types;

C4
CK6
EH3
EL5
EL7
R6

While I haven't quite finished the necessary research on the irons I need, for
completeness it appears I am missing these groups:

IC
IID
IIF
IIG
IIICD
IIIE
IIIF
IVB (Hoba)

I'm not looking for museum quality specimens, but instead I am looking for
pieces that range from a few grams to a few milligrams, depending on the per
gram price, to fill in the remaining holes in my collection.

If you have anything I need, I would really appreciate you contacting me off
list with availability and prices.

THANKS!

Between knowing where I was sitting, where I saw the bolide burnout and the

burst occurring over Granite Peak. Alas, that is deep inside Dugway Proving

arrange to get Steve and Geoff, herself and a film crew onto the proving

I live north of Tooele and saw it trough the window while seated at my desk.

Between knowing where I was sitting, where I saw the bolide burnout and the
time on my stop watch from when I saw the burst to when I heard it, I put the
burst occurring over Granite Peak. Alas, that is deep inside Dugway Proving
Grounds.

Re: [meteorite-list] Utah (Dugway) Bolide info?

2011-02-13 Thread Patrick Wiggins
Being the local go-to guy the local media calls anytime something happens in
the heavens I got a flood of calls and emails right after the fall, many from
folks media referred to me.

I was surprised at the number of out of town and even out of the country
hunters I heard from all saying they were going to get permission to hunt the
proving grounds.

I should add that some of those calls were from some very, shall we say,
interesting people. LOL!

So it would not surprise me to hear that Dugway has already been searched
(legally or otherwise).

But I'd be happy to help with any new searches in any way I can from offering
ground transport to low altitude fixed wing aerial searches.

Clear skies,

patrick

 Hello Patrick and List,

seriously disposed collector/hunters couldn't receive permission. Especially,
if all, or a representative sample, of the possible finds would be donated to
 designated public institution.

Perhaps Steve and Geoff could prevail upon her to give us some help, or
 provide contact info.

Re: [meteorite-list] Utah (Dugway) Bolide info?

2011-02-13 Thread Steve Dunklee
last time I was at Dugway was on a mission with 5th special forces group A.
Even having a CDIF clearance I was still escorted by two armed guards as is
required with the two man rule. In addition protective clothing was required
and decontamination after only walking on approoved paths. This is not my Idea
of a great place to look for any meteorite. The level of contamination from
nuclear.biogical.and chemical weapons is just too much. There isnt a blade of
grass. An inscect or anything alive for miles. The only expainition I will give
about government security clearances is to say that if anyone told you they had
a top secretclearance. They are full of shit. Have a great day and stop
trying to look for the meteorite at Dugway. I personaly would rather look for
one at Chernoble it would be safer. Cheers Steve Dunklee

[meteorite-list] More on the Moon's Core

2011-02-13 Thread Whitney Riner
Science Daily has an article on a recent re-analysis of data on the
Lunar interior in the journal Science:

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/01/110106144751.htm

Featuring a nice cameo appearance by a slice of NWA 5000

According to the team's findings, published Jan. 6 in the online
edition of Science, the Moon possesses an iron-rich core with a solid
inner ball nearly 150 miles in radius, and a 55-mile thick outer fluid
shell.
The Moon's deepest interior, especially whether or not it has a core,
has been a blind spot for seismologists, says Ed Garnero, a professor
at the School of Earth and Space Exploration in ASU's College of
Liberal Arts and Sciences. The seismic data from the old Apollo
missions were too noisy to image the Moon with any confidence. Other
types of information have inferred the presence of a lunar core, but
the details on its size and composition were not well constrained.

[meteorite-list] Auctions Ending Website Update

2011-02-13 Thread Matthew Martin

Hello fellow listees,

I have several dozen auctions that will be ending over the next three
days (beginning in about 11 hours). Pieces up for auction include
some beautifully oriented baby Sikhote-Alin's, a miniature specimen
with lot of miniature regmaglypts, a brand new CV3 I had classified
(provisionally NWA 6571), NWA 6159 (CV3), NWA 6160 (L6), Mount Egerton
(Aub.), Toufassour (Meso), Tatahouine, Chergach, Toluca, Admire, NWA
515, NWA 2948, NWA 869, Pallasovka, Mount Tazerzait, and a variety of
unclassified stones (whole, end-cuts, and slices). In addition, I
have extra small Rikers available as well.

After some difficulties with my website prior to going to Tucson, I
completely redesigned it (hopefully for the better). Currently it is
populated mainly with meteorite jewelry, however I will be adding a
variety of loose specimens in the coming weeks. You can see the new
site in action at www.meteoritetreasures.com

Here's wishing everyone traveling home from Tucson safe travels!
