Re: [meteorite-list] Strange Happenings

2011-05-23 Thread Count Deiro
Hi Adam,

Your triangle is an emergency landing area that was scraped out for use by
students from Luke, Kingman and Las Vegas air training facilities all the way
into the sixties. There are several in different areas of Northern Arizona,
Western California and Southern Nevada. The tip off is the length, width and
provision for six approaches no mattter what the wind. This one has held up
better than others I've seen.

[meteorite-list] Strange Happenings

2011-05-23 Thread Adam Hupe
Dear List Members,

Just returned from a field trip in Hassayampa Basin, Arizona while staying with
my uncle in Wickenburg.

There was some discussion on the List a month or so ago about finding strange
things in the middle of the desert. How about a perfect triangle with all
three
sides adding up to around 3 miles carved in the middle of nowhere? It kind of
reminds me of landing strip but there are no buildings or support services
anywhere near it.

My uncle did find a promising brown crusted stone about a mile away from the
mysterious triangle.

Google Earth image of huge triangle in the middle of the desert:
http://themeteoritesite.com/GoogleEarth_Image.jpg

Google link to same:
http://themeteoritesite.com/GoogleEarth_Placemark.kmz

Link to image of promising looking find:
http://themeteoritesite.com/Stone-a.jpg

It never fails to amaze me what odd things we always seem to run into in the
desert.

Happy Hunting,

2011-05-23 Thread Greg Catterton
While I wont buy a meteorwrong (would rather spend the $1-$5 per gram on real
meteorites) I do have a small collection I or others have found or I have been
given.
I find they work good in meteorite presentations to show what not to look for
and common wrong indicators. I will often put a right in with a pile of wrongs
and kids who pick the meteorite get a free meteorite.

To me, they just are not worth buying. They do help me teach kids, so they do
have some value...

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteowrongs - Collect?

2011-05-23 Thread Galactic Stone & Ironworks
Hi List,

I have built up a collection of wrongs by chance. Over the years,
when I'd find a wrong in a batch of unclassifieds, I'd toss it into a
box. Now I have a box full of weird rocks that I can bring myself to
toss out. Maybe one of them will turn out to be something rare one
day.

One of the only wrongs I have acquired intentionally is a 39g whole
slice of Shirokovsky. Fortunately, I was one of the later buyers who
knew it was a wrong when I bought it.

I do keep a few wrongs in my online store for collectors who like them
- some anorthosite lunar analogs, iron-silicate wrongs, and a piece of
copal that is a dead ringer for LDG.

Best regards,

MikeG

I have a few "wrongs" that I use for educational purposes at

[meteorite-list] AD : NWA 6352 new CO3.4-W1, Twin sister of Ornans Meteorite MAIN MASS

2011-05-23 Thread Fabien Kuntz
Hello List,

I propose here the Main Mass (1051g) of the NWA 6352 meteorite for sale...

Why this meteorite is the twinn sister of the famous historic Ornans meteorite :

On about 40 000 official meteorites, only 225 are CO3 (called the Ornans group)
On 225 meteorites on the Ornans group, only 5 are CO3.4, exactly like the
Ornans meteorite (include this first famous witnessed fall)
My NWA 6352 is the number 6, the second after Ornans (TKW 6Kg) in term of mass
(1.277Kg)
NWA 6352 is the more fresh CO3.4 after Ornans, with a weathering grade of only
W1!

Fun fact, I live in Besançon, a city about 20 km of the place where Ornans
meteorite fell in Jully 1868, and I am the main mass holder of its twin sister

: NWA 6352 !

http://www.wwmeteorites.com/NWA6352.html

Interesting in? Contact me! As a big specimen, good price... All offer welcomes

Re: [meteorite-list] Fusion crust on irons?

2011-05-23 Thread Gary Fujihara
Aloha Rob,

Thank you for those great links, and I like your pictures of your Sikhotes.
Svend's website is a great resource for information, and his article on fusion
crusts are no exception.

I have a couple of irons that exhibit fresh blue-gray fusion crust. Here is an
NWA 854 Ziz iron of 255.1g that can be seen here:
https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1971905062670.2120065.1394318075&l=874c7854a2

The best picture where the fusion crust can be readily seen is on this picture
where portions of the crust have mechanically worn off:
https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1971905422679&set=a.1971905062670.2120065.1394318075&type=1&theater

Here is a 203g Sikhote Alin, where you can see the fusion crust has flaked off
the surface in areas:
https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1699104082816.2098583.1394318075&l=f4318b09bb

Finally here is a 264g spaceship Sikhote with pristine fusion crust over its
entire surface:
https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1715927063380.2099696.1394318075&l=c9d8f5b787

I have others, but its sometimes very difficult to capture well
photographically (although easy to see in hand with your eyes). Hope this
helps.

[meteorite-list] Meteowrongs - Collect?

2011-05-23 Thread Thunder Stone

Hello Listoids and Listees:

I was wondering if anyone collects "meteowrongs?" I have actually thought about
it, but have thrown so many away, I feel it's not worth it at this point. It
would be interesting to see a large collection though.

Re: [meteorite-list] Latest comet data from NASA

2011-05-23 Thread E.P. Grondine
Hi Ron -

I'd go with option B: "Or did a hodge-podge of mini-comets come together to
form the core for a comet of substance?"

Before he makes a complete fool of himself, somebody there at JPL needs to tell
Don Yeomans that during the last centurythere was one sizable asteroid impact
at Sikhote Alin, but three comet fragmnt impacts: Tunguska, Rio Curaca, and
Rupunini.

These continued bogus impact hazardd estimates may make Ed Weiler happy, and I
know he cuts your paychecks, but they are not doing anyone else much good
otherwise.

[meteorite-list] AD: 1kg of "MendotaWrong" One of the world's best and maybe the most beautiful ever

2011-05-23 Thread Joe Kerchner
Sorry, I forgot to mention the price, It is $325 for 1kg and free shipping to
USA and I will split shipping outside of USA

Hello Fellow Meteorite Enthusiasts,
I have a kilo of one of the world's best "meteorwrongs". Unlike most other
meteorwrongs, all but 2(Skirokovsky & Putorano), this is very collectable and
is already in many collectors collections around the World.
So far, this material has only been found near Mendota, IL. hence the name
"MendotaWrong"
This kilo is mostly complete stones, with a few cut stones. This material
usually sells for between $1-$3 per gram. You will be able to keep some
beautiful pieces for your collection an be able to more than double your
investment.
This material has baffled many collectors and scientist to.

Here are a few links to see how beautiful and meteorite-like it is.

Re: [meteorite-list] Bigfoot and the "Nakhla Dog"

2011-05-23 Thread al mitt

Sorry list last post on this topic for me,

How long does one have to be in the meteorite world before they're no
longer considered a newcomer (noob) by you<

I'd say when you grow up and learn to respect other people's view points.
Not off topic posts. Also keeping your noise out of business that isn't
yours in the first place. Your not the authority here as you have tried to
appoint yourself and I'll post as I see fit.

You are accusing me of being arrogant? That's funny.<

Yes, your are very arrogant. Your need to try to show me up for a simple
request to respect other peoples believe systems. I feel this is a place for
everyone except for those who try to use it to their own benefits without
regards to others. Your one guy who simply can't keep your fat mouth shut
when you want to control what someone else is pointing out is wrong. Well
eric you can't do that with me.

Now for another petty shot at your magazine (your standards).

Truthfully, how many people have or haven't (more have than have not)<
received the magazine is none of your concern<

What a joke eric, you admit you aren't providing copies to people who have
them coming in the above statement.

I think fraud concerns everyone on this list when there are questionable
dealings. I saw a number of posts stating that after paying for their
magazines you had not shipped them for months. A number had not even
received their copies. That is what they said. Not me. I just got a couple
of emails saying they still have not received their copies yet. That should
concern everyone on this list if you are still not providing something that
has been paid for

I would suggest that if someone has not received their copy, and if the
magazine is sent in the mail, and if you paid for your copies in the mail,
to file a complaint with your post office, as they are always interested in
fly by night outfits using the mail for questionable means.

Aren't you also being a hypocrite by complaining about Mike's post being <
off topic, then slamming me publicly with something completely <
irrelevant to the topic at hand simply to save face <

Mike's comments were off topic to the theme of this list. The issues about
your magazine while not related to the original post were warranted, as soon
as you tried to control my simple post. Going back over your posts, I see
you do this. I feel there are a lot of people wanting this brought up so why
not here since you seem to think you are so much better than the rest of us
eric.

I'm sure you don't want me to respond to this publicly but since you asked
for it here it is. Your right I have not cared for the way you have handled
yourself on the list. Tried to pull people off here to your site. You are a
control freak. You think you can shut people up by posting private messages.
You remind me of a spoiled little brat that will do what ever they can to
get their way.

I usually don't send an email unless I mean it. I have been quite honest
while you are trying to sweep the issues of your magazine away and call me
dishonest. It is you who are not being honest with people who have paid you
money for your magazine and I think that speak volumes.

I am sure you will try to use every word against me as an attempt to control
as you always do. Be advised that I will hold you to things you say or put
in my mouth on this list.

I deleted the posts to save bandwidth and people can easily go and read the
thread post by post. They don't have to do that in our posts but forgot you
are trying to control again when nothing disingenuous was meant by that at
all and can't see that it was a big deal. I often clean up long threads and
address the post I am responding to. We don't need the thread repeated with
every response to a post. Go back to the archive and you will see that I do
this. Perhaps you are trying to smokescreen the real issues here.

Enough of this nonsense.

(sorry list for the harshness of this email, but this has been a long

Hi Al, Thank you for pointing out I'm a newbie in this arena.
Technically, I'm not a newbie anymore, at least I thought I wasn't since

point that out.

You are accusing me of being arrogant? That's funny.

Aren't you being rather arrogant yourself by implying you've been here
longer and know better than me the ways and working of this niche we
call the meteorite world? That is pretty conceited if you ask me. But
what the heck do I know? I'm an inexperienced noob.

As for your obvious and extremely petty dig on me and my magazine, I'm
very tempted to write a long string of profane and quite insulting words
to you, but I think your own careless knee-jerk post does a much better
job of showing your colors than anything I could write.

Truthfully, how many people have or haven't (more have than have not)
received the magazine is none of your concern, and completely irrelevant
to this topic. But since you you felt the need to drag me and my
magazine into a completely unrelated topic just to suit your personal
and petty satisfaction to embarrass me somehow (which it doesn't by the
way) I will say this ONE last time.

Everyone will get every magazine they paid for. I promise that. I've
always promised that and I've been keeping everyone updated on the
progress of the magazine. If you personally are too self centered and
lazy to go to my website and read what I've posted very publicly to
everyone, then that's your problem, not mine. It has nothing to do with
anyone else and goes to your own issue. You know nothing about what's
going on, you're not a subscriber, you never have been, and you've made
it clear you've been against my magazine from the start. You've never
supported me in anything (not that you should), and obviously have
always had some bone of personal contention with me for years Al. If you
deny that you're not being truthful (I have past emails which prove your
contempt for me), if you admit it, you simply prove your personal issue
with me because much of your previous correspondence to me has had this
same arrogant overtone.

For you to bring my magazine into this unrelated topic shows EVERYONE
reading this right now the kind of person you are Al, and that you care
nothing of the magazine really, nor of my subscribers, but only are
using it to embarrass me in some way. Basically a sucker punch when I
wasn't looking or expecting it. Only cowards take sucker punches.

Aren't you also being a hypocrite by complaining about Mike's post being
off topic, then slamming me publicly with something completely
irrelevant to the topic at hand simply to save face and take a cheap
shot to gain some kind of personal satisfaction at my perceived
embarrassment in your eyes, not realizing of course you're only making a
fool out of yourself, and everyone here knows it.

I would advise that you, starting right now, NOT respond to this
publicly with any other false statements. Choose your next response very
carefully, or do not respond at all, because I will use every word
against you.

Whatever Al...

Regards,
Eric

P.S. Since you neglected to change the subject line of the thread, and
deleted the thread posts before this one in a disingenuous way to focus
the attention on me and my magazine, I've been considerate enough to
repost the full thread [below] which you've attacked me in to show that
your cheap and obviously personal and contemptuous attack was completely
and utterly irrelevant to the topic that you were complaining about earlier.

Re: [meteorite-list] Bigfoot and the "Nakhla Dog" - what do they havein common?

2011-05-23 Thread al mitt

Eric,

Since your a new comer to the meteorite business and this list, I'll explain
this to you one time. First, the list has always been self policing. In the
old days I believe it was a bit more so. When we had people like you did,
scold scollars who's input on the list was well respected, list members
wouldn't mince words with them.

I've noticed that you like to challenge people when ever they don't post
something to your liking but yet you have the arrogance to challenge me for
the same. It boils down to two things. First respect for the people who
might have different views than Mike's and second, keeping the posts more on
topic as the list rules state. I personally like to see people of all walks
of life be on this list.

I respect Mike for the most part but any political or religious comments
don't belong on a list that is _suppose_ to be about meteorites. While I
agree with a number of things Mike said, posting such comments just fuel the
fire for others who have different beliefs and can start and off topic fight
like this one.

If Mike is allowed to post off topic on a senstive area then there is no
reason that I can't call him on it as I felt it was out of place here. While
you and Mike are being insenstive about others believes (and again this is
all off topic) and don' t see harm, I have received a number of emails
thanking me for my post.

Go back to stiffing people on your magazine sales and telling scollars to
poliltely shut up. I'd like to start and off topic post to see how many
people are still waiting on you to send them their printed magazine they
paid for.

LOL Now now boys... Calm down.

Al... I'll try to be as nice as possible. Can I see your Met-List Police
badge? Who are you to call people out for making an off topic joke?
Lighten up man. You're jumping all over Mike for expressing his opinion
and making a joke. Since you have the power to call people out, I guess I
do too right, as does every other person on this email list. Unless you
feel like you're above reproach. What if I call you out for trying to make
Mike to feel like crap for making a joke about the Rapture? It was
worldwide news, was on everyone's minds, and I thought is was clever of
Mike to bring Bigfoot into it. That's ok. It wasn't insulting at all.

Mike, Good for you for keeping an open mind. (you need not apologize for
your opinions).

By the way that Bigfoot Rapture joke was f***ing hilarious!

Regards,
Eric

[meteorite-list] The Aegospotami fall of 465 BC

2011-05-23 Thread Mark's Meteorites
Hi folks,

I've added a new article to my site, dealing with the ancient Greek meteorite
fall of around 465 BC. A stone "the size of a wagon load" fell, and was a
tourist attraction for at least 500 years.

Good morning list,
Do freshly fallen irons and stony-irons, have any kind of crust on them? if they
do, what does the crust typically look like on these meteorites?

Hi Al,

I'm sorry if I offended you or anyone else on the list. I was just
trying to make some humor, albeit in a poor manner apparently. For
the record, I am not anti-religious. I am a deeply spiritual person,
but not in the usual mainstream manner. I have compassion for my
fellow man and all living things on this Earth and a deep respect for
nature. What I don't like is insane old charlatans making statements
designed to create chaos and generate publicity and revenue.

Imagine the children in this situation. Mom and Dad suddenly go off
the deep end listening to this self-proclaimed messenger of God. They
sell off the house, quit their jobs, and drag the kids across the
country in a mini-van with the word "Rapture" plastered all over it.
At the end of the day, the child is now homeless and his parents have
no means to properly care for him. That is child abuse and the old
man who announced this "prophecy" should be brought up on criminal
charges or hit with a civil suit. One cannot yell "Fire!" in a
crowded theatre, and one should not be allowed to maliciously disrupt
the lives of countless families to the detriment of the children
involved. I don't feel sorry for the gullible sheeple adults who fell
for this nonsense, but their kids have no say in it.

I have a problem with BS and I have never been afraid to call BS when
I see it. The God of Moses will send the messiah like a thief in the
night and none shall know the day of his arrival.

I have read 3 translations of the Bible (also the Apocrypha) cover to
cover, and most of the world's major holy books, including the Koran,
the Bardo Thudo, the Bhagavad Gita, Book of the Mormon, the Classics
of Confucianism, Egyptian Book of the Dead, the Satanic Bible (a joke
and insult to the mind, but I had to read it to understand it), the
Tanakh and the Torah, and I could go on. In all, I have digested
about 2 dozen of the world's holiest books during my spiritual search.
So I am not anti-religious. I am anti-BS and this recent rapture
nonsense was exactly that - malicious BS designed to attract publicity
and profit. Or, it was the delusional ramblings of a self-aggrandizer
who should be medicated and placed in a treatment facility.

I was baptized, took communion, attended Eucharist, and meditated in a
Buddhist temple. I have also attended two Witches' Sabbats. I think
you get my point. I don't mean to offend, and I often stick my foot
into my mouth. And when I do offend, I always apologize and mean it.
I like you Al, always have. And I don't want you pissed off at me, so
I hope you can forgive my attempt at humor that started this.

Jesus was one cool dude, full of love, compassion, and wisdom. I wish
everyone could be like him - the world would be a better place.
Unfortunately, nutjobs like Harold Camping hijack the message of Jesus
for profit - and people like that should be firmly rebuked, IMO.

I was going to send this to you privately, but since you called me out
on the list, I am replying in public. But this will be my last post
on the list about this and if you want to continue the discussion in
private, we can. And I want to re-iterate, my apology to you is
sincere. :)

Best regards,

MikeG
