[meteorite-list] Ad - New Possible Olivine Diogenite, Rare Types (CO3.3, OC3), Translucent Indochinite Silver Necklaces, and Announcements.

2011-05-27 Thread Michael Gilmer
Hi Friends and Collectors!

I have just received some new meteorite specimens, and these include
some very rare types and achondrites. Before I get to them, don't
forget to use coupon code metlist at checkout to get a 20% discount
on your entire order. :)

First up is a very unusual meteorite - an unclassified and possible
olivine diogenite. What does this mean? It means this - these
samples were found in the same strewnfield as
NWA 5480 (a confirmed olivine diogenite), and I acquired them through
the same Moroccan source. These samples are identical in appearance,
texture and physical properties as NWA 5480. So for all intents and
purposes, these specimens are olivine diogenite, but this has not been
formally confirmed by lab analysis yet. Again though, let me
emphasize so there is no confusion - these specimens are unclassified,
but take a look at them yourself.

All of these samples have a polished face and natural unpolished side.

I am a type collector and I am always looking for unusual or scarce
types to fill holes in my collection. This week, I am offering a few
more of these.

The same lapidary artist (Jason Borst) who made the meteorite pendants
in my store has created some translucent Indochinite pendants. These
are natural one side and polished on the other. Each pendant has
areas that show an other-worldly greenish glow when held up to the
light. I only have 3 of these left. Each one comes with a sterling
silver chain. Like the meteorite pendants, these are unisex and they
look great on male or female aliens. ;)

Opals), see his website - http://www.opalandjasper.com/

Lastly, a few announcements :

1) I have a new storefront on Facebook. For you FB commandos out
there, you can now shop my entire inventory through the FB interface.
This application has a secure encrypted checkout and functions the
same as my website store. Even the coupon codes work. I post
exclusive discounts and freebie offers there that I won't post
anywhere else. So stop by and click Like to have a look -
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Galactic-Stone-Ironworks-Meteorites/218849894809686

2) I have put together an old-school Master Price List for my
collection. This is a text-only document that shows everything in my
inventory and pricing. I did this so people can simply scroll down a
plain text list to see everything that is available. I will be
updating this price list regularly as my inventory changes. It is
available for download here -
http://files.buyitsellit.com/15508/master-price-list.rtf

3) My injured finger is still bandaged up, but I have gotten much
better at typing with a mooked-up digit. So if you emailed me in the
last 2 days and have not gotten a reply yet, you will hear from me
today as I catch up on my correspondences. If you ordered something
and have not gotten it yet, don't fear - all outstanding orders are
being mailed out today and tomorrow. I have a couple of orders
running a few days late, and if you are one of those buyers then
expect some extra bonus freebies in your package. :)

4) I would like to clear out some of these non-meteorite items that
have been sitting in my Clearance section for a while now. These
include some old newspapers and magazines from the 1960's that have
coverage of the historic Apollo missions, including the first lunar
landing. These are like a time capsule from that period and are chock
full of articles about Apollo, the Vietnam war, and other world events
from that period. The vintage car and consumer product advertisements
are also fun. Make me an offer on these items, and you'd be surprised
how far I will drop the price. Make an offer

[meteorite-list] NWA meteorites

2011-05-27 Thread Peter Scherff
Hi,
What countries do NWA meteorites come from? The countries that I see
listed in the Meteoritical Bulletin are: Algeria, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco
Western Sahara. Are there other official countries? How about
unofficial ones, where you know or suspect that a meteorite found in
another country was said to have been purchased or found in an official
NWA country. What do you know or suspect?

Thanks,

Peter

[meteorite-list] Saluting Michael Gilmel

2011-05-27 Thread David Gunning

Hi Mike,

Couple of comments and a question.

First, foremost and most importantly, I'm glad you and your finger are on
the mend. Your unfortunate experience reminds me of why I don't trust
car jacks and carry around a small portable floor jack, whenever and
wherever I drive.

Secondly, the recent posting of your offered inventory is very helpful to
someone such as myself, a retiree subsisting on a modest fixed income.
It really permits to me gather my wits about me and carefully determine
and select the meteoritic products that most catch my fancy and benefit
my circumstances. You are a credit to your profession and a first rate
dealer and marketeer.

All meteorite dealers, from my view, would do well to emulate your
business model.

Finally, I'm developing a specific gravity data base for meteorite
samples. I'm wondering if you can provide total weights of some of your
meteorite micromounts upon specific request? Mostly I require samples of
no less than a carat for accurate specific gravity determinations.

Thanks for your time, energy and business acumen!

With best wishes for your speedy recovery.

David Gunning

Re: [meteorite-list] NWA meteorites

2011-05-27 Thread Jeff Grossman
The definition in the Nomenclature Committee guidelines is this: All
meteorites found, reported to be found, or purchased in Morocco and
adjacent parts of the surrounding countries.

Surrounding countries has been interpreted to mean the adjacent
countries (Western Sahara and Algeria), and the nearby, northern regions
of Mauritania and Mali. More distant countries like Tunisia and Niger
are not included, if we know that they are the source regions.

Two meteorites once did slip through the cracks, however: NWA 1241 and
1242 were both supposedly found in Libya.

[meteorite-list] ALERT--JERRY ARMSTRONG PAINTING MISSING

Hello All,

Sorry for this post but I need all meteoritical eyes on the lookout.

Around October 2009 Jerry Armstrong agreed to paint the nebula NGC 6302 for
me. http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/apo090910.html

He informed me that he mailed it to me on May 21.
He did not insure it nor signature required.

[meteorite-list] Holbrook 99th anniversary Meteorite Hunt

2011-05-27 Thread Ruben Garcia
Hi all,

July 19, 2011 will mark the 99th anniversary of the Holbrook fall.

In celebration of that monumental event I am considering leading a
hunt to the Holbrook strewn field – of course this depends on how many
are interested. I am considering one day on the weekend (not both)
prior to the anniversary – either July 16th or 17th. I am aware that
this close to July 4th weekend most people may be out of money but
it's worth a try.

Any and all are invited regardless of experience! If you are new to
meteorite hunting then this is your chance to meet at least one
professional meteorite hunter (who's found hundreds of Holbrook
meteorites)and learn. If you are experienced and would like to come
too, I would welcome the help, as there will likely be more beginners
than advanced hunters.

Typically when hunting the area I stay in the Motel 6 in Holbrook
where rooms are usually very inexpensive ($40-$50 per night)

Please contact me and let me know if you are interested in joining me.
It would be great to have a large turn out. After all, I get 100’s of
requests a year from people all over the country wanting to learn
about meteorite hunting.

Now is your chance!

Email and let me know if you are interested and which day works best:

Hello Gary and List,

Just a few minutes ago, Gary launched an EBay AD and one of his offerings

Hi Said,

I don't know what it is, but I a customer of mine sent me a small
walnut-sized stone to cut for him. The person who sold it to him said
it was an unclassified possible CV3. When I cut it open, it looked
exactly like the specimen in your photo. I don't know what it was,
but it was not a CV3. It had a hard, glassy texture to it. He was
supposed to get it analyzed, but I never heard what the results were.

 Hi all,

July 19, 2011 will mark the 99th anniversary of the
 Holbrook fall.

In celebration of that monumental event I am considering
 leading a
hunt to the Holbrook strewn field – of course this
 depends on how many
are interested. I am considering one day on the weekend
 (not both)
prior to the anniversary – either July 16th or 17th. I am
 aware that
this close to July 4th weekend most people may be out of
 money but
 it's worth a try.

Any and all are invited regardless of experience! If you
 are new to
meteorite hunting then this is your chance to meet at least
 one
professional meteorite hunter (who's found hundreds of
 Holbrook
meteorites)and learn. If you are experienced and would like
 to come
too, I would welcome the help, as there will likely be more
 beginners
 than advanced hunters.

Typically when hunting the area I stay in the Motel 6 in
 Holbrook
where rooms are usually very inexpensive ($40-$50 per
 night)

Please contact me and let me know if you are interested in
 joining me.
It would be great to have a large turn out.  After
 all, I get 100’s of
requests a year from people all over the country wanting to
 learn
 about meteorite hunting.

 Now is your chance!

Email and let me know if you are interested and which day
 works best:

[meteorite-list] NWA 869 - FYI: an L3-6

2011-05-27 Thread Bernd V. Pauli
Hello MikeG and List,

Was the previous classification a L4-6 regolith breccia, or just L4-6?

It was classified as an L4–6 fragmental breccia.

In 2008, there was a paper by the same author but different co-authors
and then already, these authors proposed NWA 869 should be called
an L3-6 regolith breccia. See here:

Metzler K. et al. (2008) The L3-6 Regolith Breccia Northwest Africa 869:
Petrology, Noble Gases And Cosmogenic Radionuclides (Lunar and Planetary
Science XXXIX, 2008, 1120.pdf).

In the 2011 MAPS article the authors point out that the variability of olivine
compositions ranges from Fa0 to Fa50 and that of low-Ca pyroxenes from
Fs0 to Fs35 to justify their proposal to reclassify this desert beauty.

Cheers,

Bernd

[meteorite-list] Certificate of Mailing

2011-05-27 Thread David Gunning

Hi All,

It's disheartening to read the post about the painting lost in the mails.
Here's a little tip I've utilized for many years to give me a little
piece of mind, a little extra piece of mind, whenever I mail something
with the USPS that I want to be able to document that was mailed. It's
called a certificate of mailing.

How it works is this: when an item is entrusted to the USPS I pay a
little extra something, less than $2.00, for a a piece of paper known as
a USPS certificate of mailing

It offers proof that I mailed something to so and so.

The person to whom a letter, padded parcel envelope, or whatever, is
mailed to does not know that I have this proof but if something is
lost in the mail the Certificate of Mailing covers my tush.

If anyone were ever to claim that something was maybe not mailed I have
certifiable USPS proof that it was.

Fortunately, nothing of mine has ever been lost in the mail.

Yesterday, for example, I sent off a possible meteorite to an expert for
an opinion of what may be a small slightly magnetic meteorite with a USPS
Certificate of Mailing. I anticipate no problem with the specimen
reaching it's intended final destination. But if there is a problem,
well, need I say more?

This little precaution may also help keep some people honest.

Best wishes to all.

[meteorite-list] Dawn Journal - May 27, 2011

2011-05-27 Thread Ron Baalke

http://dawn.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/journal_05_27_11.asp

Dawn Journal
Dr. Marc Rayman
May 27, 2011

Dear Dependawnble Readers,

Dawn remains healthy and on course as it continues to approach Vesta.
Thrusting with its ion propulsion system, as it has for most of its
interplanetary journey so far, the spacecraft is gradually matching
its solar orbit to that of the protoplanet just ahead.

As these two residents of the asteroid belt, one very new and one quite
ancient, travel around the sun, they draw ever closer. Vesta follows its
own familiar path, repeating it over and over, just as Earth and many other
solar system bodies do. Dawn has been taking a spiral route, climbing away
from the sun atop a blue-green pillar of xenon ions. With an accumulated
total in excess of two and a half years of ion thrusting, providing an
effective change in velocity of more than 6.5 kilometers per second
(14,500 mph), the probe is close to the end of the first leg of its
interplanetary trek. On July 16 Vesta's gravity will capture the ship as it
smoothly transitions from spiraling around the sun to spiraling around Vesta,
aiming for survey orbit in August. For several reasons, the date for the
beginning of the intensive observations there has not yet been set exactly.

Astronomers have estimated Vesta's mass , principally by measuring how it
occasionally perturbs the orbits of some of its neighbors in the asteroid belt
and even the orbit of Mars, but this method yields only an approximate value.
Because the mass is not well known, there is some uncertainty in the precise
time that Dawn will become gravitationally bound to the colossal asteroid. As
we have seen before, entry into orbit is quite unlike the highly suspenseful
and stressful event of missions that rely on conventional chemical propulsion.
Dawn simply will be thrusting, just as it has for 70 percent of its time in
space. Orbit entry will be much like a typical day of quiet cruise. That Vesta
will take hold at some point will matter only to the many Dawnophiles
throughout the cosmos following the mission. The ship will continue to
sail along a gently curving arc to survey orbit.

The bending of Dawn's path will depend on exactly what Vesta's mass is,
so navigators will continue to refine the flight profile as they measure
the strength of the pull it exerts. As a result, the exact date of
arrival in survey orbit will not be known until the mass is determined
more accurately. Indeed, although the altitudes of survey orbit,
the high altitude mapping orbit, and the low altitude mapping orbit
have been presented in previous logs, mission planners may target somewhat
different altitudes depending on what they discover Vesta's gravity to be.

There is another reason that the beginning of survey orbit cannot be
specified precisely. Ion propulsion tends to afford much greater
flexibility to missions than conventional propulsion does. One example
of that was evident in the original schedule for the mission. When the
first log (whose current price on the black market is reportedly well in
excess of 2.4 percent of its original price) was written, the launch was
planned for June 2007. Because of schedule changes, including those in the
preparation of the rocket and the inflexibility of another deep-space mission
(which did not use ion propulsion), Dawn's launch moved to September of that
year. This unique mission to Vesta and Ceres, ambitious
as it is, would have been possible with a launch on any day from 2005
through late 2007 because of the ion propulsion. A typical
interplanetary mission has a period of a few weeks in which it must
depart Earth.

In many cases, controllers use this flexibility to allow the dates of
key events to move based on details of the progress of the thrusting
and other subtleties of spaceflight. That choice permits Dawn to squeeze
still more out of the mission by, for example, spending a little extra
time at Vesta. So instead of pinning down the date of survey orbit
(assuming a particular value of Vesta's mass), they let it change as the
mission proceeds. This strategy also makes it easier to update the
flight profile as the spacecraft closes in on its destination.

Navigators steer the ship toward a survey orbit with certain geometrical
characteristics, such as its altitude (depending on Vesta's mass) and
the angle of the orbit relative to the sun. They do not choose a
specific entry point in the orbit when performing their trajectory
calculations; rather, they let the trajectory calculations determine the
arrival point. With each refinement, that location shifts slightly. The
survey orbit observations are designed to begin after the craft has
attained the correct orbit and then passes over the north pole,
traveling from the night side to the day side of Vesta. Regardless of
where the spacecraft arrives along the circle of the intended orbit,
controllers will program it to begin surveying at that moment. Because
