[meteorite-list] Thin section company/opinions

2011-08-21 Thread Jason Snyder
Howdy list,

I'm curious if anyone in the US has used National Petrographic Service Inc.
(out of Texas) for creating thin slices of meteorites? I have a few meteorites
that I would like a thin section of, but am not familiar with all the "extras"
involved for a specimen. Any and all suggestions are welcomed about obtaining
a thin slice specimen. Thanks for the help, Jason

[meteorite-list] Map, Sonic Boom; Canada to Ohio Event - Aug. 8, 2011

2011-08-21 Thread Shawn Alan
Hello Listers

I took a look at the Radar bounce backs and at 21 min section I did also see
three marks on the same time level. The first bleep if you want to call it that
is at 18km the second is 20 km and the third is 22km in the same frame. I have
been told and read that the flight of the meteor was SSE.

Here is the link to the radar return

http://www.flickr.com/photos/48262799@N03/6067811559/in/set-72157627101982105

But I am confused by the return, because the direction of the return is in an
east ward direction and the elevation goes up in that manner. Also I check
other elevations in that time section and no other returns. So I think that it
might be a glitch of could be the real deal but I am thrown off by the
elevation going up as it heads east. One would think it would go down and also
the direction of the flight of the meteor and the radar returns dont match up.
One is east and the other is SSE.

But again, I am not a scientist, but can say this, let pray that we have
meteorites :) and its a Lunar. And if thats the case, I wouldnt be buying any
cause that will be s much money, but will be fun to watch how much
people would be willing to pay.

Re: [meteorite-list] Shirokovsky - a paper on its manufacture

2011-08-21 Thread Richard Montgomery

Adam and List,
(Sometimes garbage tells a good story...just ask the identity thieves.) In
my case, I have a couple of Shiro pieces (bought as advertized as
meteor-wrong) for the sole purpose of shoe-and-tell (pun intended) and
educational purposes. Same with Putorano and Mendota...remember when Puto
arrived on the scene (can I really write it that way, again pun intended?)

This is, of course, to accentuate the true rarities and authentics of all
the real ones.

Let me simplify the formula a little bit:

1970's era Junkyard Ford Fairlane FE 390 Big Block + Olivine + Fraudsters +
High School Metal Shop = Shirokovsky

Here is the big block link in case you want to get your hands on your own
nickel-rich ataxite engine:

Sorry, couldn't help myself. I can't believe all of the talk over this
garbage,

Hi Bob and list

The analyses:
Metallic powder, olivine etc...
Iron: 78% Nickel:18.25%
A general structure close to a pallasite

The metallic powder structure shows that sintering was used (frittage)
The powder was produced by atomization under gas.

It is a manufactured "stone".
So they decided to reproduce that "stone".
They got something close to the Shirokovsky but didn't go further
because of the money needed etc..

Their conclusion:
manufactured product, mainly with metallic powder and sintering process

All the best
Michael B.

Hello All,
Greg is correct; unless the meteorites have been found in a demarcated
"dense collection area," they should not receive separate names. The
Nomenclature Committee's policies regarding serial naming are rather
clear -- and since the stones are apparently paired, I believe
Franconia is the perfect analogy. Per existing regulations, these
stones should not receive new names.

If I am to understand correctly, someone of questionable integrity was
involved with the recovery of the third stone.

Since you failed to answer my question in private, Diero, I'll ask you
here -- is that correct?

From the University of Nairobi scientific note:

"He says already scientists have so far concluded that it has
components typical to those of other rocks on the earth's surface."

Well - you might not think much of this comment, but you'd think if
chondrules were evident it might be mentioned. Remembering, of course,
that rocks on Earth's surface are essentially all achondrites as long
as your aren't near meteorite collections ...

PS there was a rumor going around that this was going to be as
plentiful as Gao ! But never heard much about that either ;-( I
didn't see much besides the 11 pound meteorite that landed in the
Kiumwiri cornfield.

Re: [meteorite-list] Shirokovsky - a paper on its manufacture

2011-08-21 Thread Adam Hupe

Let me simplify the formula a little bit:

1970's era Junkyard Ford Fairlane FE 390 Big Block + Olivine + Fraudsters +
High School Metal Shop = Shirokovsky

Here is the big block link in case you want to get your hands on your own
nickel-rich ataxite engine:
http://www.cartechbooks.com/cartech/contentfiles/11.pdf

Sorry, couldn't help myself.  I can't believe all of the talk over this garbage,

Michael B.

Re: [meteorite-list] Shirokovsky - a paper on its manufacture

2011-08-21 Thread Michael Bross

Hi Bob and list

The analyses:
Metallic powder, olivine etc...
Iron: 78% Nickel:18.25%
A general structure close to a pallasite

The metallic powder structure shows that sintering was used (frittage)
The powder was produced by atomization under gas.

It is a manufactured "stone".
So they decided to reproduce that "stone".
They got something close to the Shirokovsky but didn't go further
because of the money needed etc..

Their conclusion:
manufactured product, mainly with metallic powder and sintering process

All the best
Michael B.

[meteorite-list] Fwd: [2] Map, Radar Returns; Canada to Ohio Event - Aug. 8, 2011

2011-08-21 Thread MexicoDoug
The Video got over 50 views (up from 4) since I posted it a few minutes
ago ;-)

For anyone headed into the Youngstown OH area:

Hermitage, OH
N 41D 14M; W 80D 26.5M

Kinsman, OH
N 41D 26.5M; W 80D 35.5M

The map in the video shows the bolide cloud on radar (on the video at
0:25), that is more than enough to start the hunt.

Kindest wishes and best luck

Re: [meteorite-list] Shirokovsky

2011-08-21 Thread Galactic Stone & Ironworks
So, does anyone know exactly who made this stuff? If not, do we have
a general idea?

Can anyone speak authoritatively on the origin of this material?
Several veterans have claimed it was an intentional fraud, but nobody
has explained exactly where/when this material showed up on the
market, represented by whom, and what follow-up(s) were made to track
down the source. Was law-enforcement contacted? And were the
scammers publicly shamed/exposed for their crime?

If we don't know exactly who made it, then can we really say
(definitively) whether it was created as an intentional fraud or not?

How do we know Shiro is not some accidental slag that a scammer found
and then decided to fraudulently offer the material as a meteorite?

I'm trying to defend a fake, just trying to better understand the
story behind the material and what drives people to take such
passionate stances against it. I can almost hear the vitriol dripping
from Adam and Doug's statements about Shiro - I respect both of their
opinions and I am now very curious about this material and what makes
them so riled up about it. Do we know for certain it was
intentionally created solely for fraudulent purposes? Or were the
fraudsters merely being opportunistic when they chanced across Shiro?

Best regards,

MikeG

PS - all sales of pallasitic engine blocks are hereby suspended until
further notice. ;)

Wow. My innocent querry has really stirred up a hornet's nest! Interresting,
though, to see how passsionate some of you are about this, especially Adam. I
just wanted to see an etch and see if Iron and Nickle were thrown into the soup
as seperate elements, or as one piece of melted alloy. If the manufacturer had
claimed it was a terrestrial olivine-bomb, he may have got away with it.
