Also similar is the small rock he pictures in his post of May 29. ]

Re: [meteorite-list] UARS -- Alberta or Pacific fall?

2011-09-26 Thread MexicoDoug

So, where are the parts...

Hi Greg

I'm sure the Department of Defense knows whether it is at the bottom of
the ocean, but it is probably classified since any comment whatsoever
might hint on tracking and spying capabilities. They shot down a
satellite from orbit before, so observing sounds easier by comparison.

Can't they read a license plate from space? If there were any risk at
all that it would land in North America, one would think it was well
watched. But it would be cool if a listmember found it!

Kindest wishes
Doug

One more comment on Okotoks, Alberta, Canada for those of you who who

2011-09-26 Thread Robert Verish
http://www.ufodigest.com/article/possible-meteorite-strike-kills-one-destroys-homes-argentina

Translation (very approximate):

At dawn, there was an explosion that was heard for miles round Esteban
Echeverría, in the province of Buenos Aires. Authorities confirmed the death of
Silvia Espinoza Infantes, a woman of 43 years of Peruvian nationality. There
were also six people injured.

One person was able to photograph with her cell phone (see picture related)
what appears to be a meteorite of small size, while other neighboring Argentina
relied on the issuance of Radio 10 he saw a blue fireball falling from the sky.
Others said they felt a strong smell of gunpowder.

Local residents also indicated that, after the fact, several cars were not
working and said they suspected a celestial body, its electromagnetic charge.

The mysterious incident occurred in conjunction with the comet's passage near
the planet Elenin. On Tuesday September 27, be aligned with the Earth and the
Sun and other esoteric interpreters claim that could harness serious
consequences, such as earthquakes or even cause it to attract celestial bodies
toward Earth.

Comet Elenin also blames the fall of the NASA satellite, which fell last
weekend near Canada, but whose whereabouts are unknown. It is also linked to
the earthquake in Japan and other global catastrophes.

The causes of the explosion in Buenos Aires are still unknown, but while
conducting skills, growing catastrophe theory that began in the sky.

It seems to be a gas explosion.
the few witnessed are not consistent, speaking of blue fire. Some

In that area a real fireball big enought to make that crash should

Re: [meteorite-list] OT Argentina destruction to houses, killing one injuring 6

2011-09-26 Thread MexicoDoug

The useful words are these, though I don't have time to listen twice
and get it exact:

We saw a light and an heard a big explosion, dry explosion [Doug: I
think this might best translate to a 'hollow' explosion in American
English], it moved the bed and everything else. [Probably the woman
speaking wasn't in the house that was flattened, think she said she
lived a half block away, but says she was one of the first to arrive]

There was dark, very black, heavy smoke, although at first we thought
it was the cables [Me: I assume the electric service cables]

Kindest wishes,
Doug

PS, We have these tragedies all the time in Mexico with natural gas
explosions, look exactly like this, though it is claimed that the tanks
were where they were supposed to be, that just means a tank didn't
explode (assuming ALL are accounted for). For example if a valve was
leaking and hot cables nearby, a spark could be generated and easily
cause this tradegy.

NASA TO HOST NEWS CONFERENCE ON ASTEROID SEARCH FINDINGS

WASHINGTON -- NASA will hold a news conference at 1 p.m. EDT on
Thurs., Sept. 29, to reveal near-Earth asteroid findings and
implications for future research. The briefing will take place in the
NASA Headquarters James E. Webb Auditorium, located at 300 E St. SW
in Washington.

NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) mission, launched in
December 2009, captured millions of images of galaxies and objects in
space. During the news conference, panelists will discuss results
from an enhancement of WISE called Near-Earth Object WISE (NEOWISE)
that hunted for asteroids.

The panelists are:
-- Lindley Johnson, NEO program executive, NASA Headquarters,
Washington
-- Amy Mainzer, NEOWISE principal investigator, NASA's Jet Propulsion
Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif.
-- Tim Spahr, director, Minor Planet Center, Smithsonian Astrophysical
Observatory, Cambridge, Mass.
-- Lucy McFadden, scientist, NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center,
Greenbelt, Md.

Reporters unable to attend may ask questions from participating NASA
centers or by telephone. To participate by phone, reporters must
contact Dwayne Brown at 202-358-1726 or dwayne.c.br...@nasa.gov by 10
a.m. EDT on Sept. 29.

The event will air live on NASA Television and the agency's website.
For NASA TV streaming video, downlink and scheduling information,

The briefing also will be streamed live, with a chat available, at:

Subject: [meteorite-list] Named masses

All,

I'm compiling a list of all meteorites that have named masses. The two
well-known examples are Cape York and Campo del Cielo, which each have
many large pieces that are known by informal names, e.g., Ahnighito (CY)
and El Patio (CdC).

How many others can people come up with? This is a crowdsourcing
exercise for the MetBull database, where I'd like to keep track of such
names. I already have a long list of synonyms, but most of these are
not the names of masses; they are alternate names and spellings for the
meteorite itself (if you'd like to scan them to see if you can spot any
mass names, here is the long list:
http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meteor/MetBullSynonyms.php).

What I need are:

Meteorite name; mass name; weight; source of information; optional
descriptive text

Thanks to all who can help!

Jeff

p.s. I think I have most of the CdC and CY names already compiled.
