Re: [meteorite-list] Fully Documented Hammer?
Anita and List, (Sorry if this posts twice). Here's a link to some photos of the Benld, Il meteorite that I took while at the Field Museum in Chicago a few years ago. I think it meets all of your criteria. http://www.flickr.com/photos/stevewitt/sets/72157628543826203/detail/ Link to the Met Bulletin for Benld: http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meteor/metbull.php?sea=Benld&sfor=names&ants=&falls=&valids=&stype=contains&lrec=50&map=ge&browse=&country=All&srt=name&categ=All&mblist=All&rect=&phot=&snew=0&pnt=Normal%20table&code=5021 Also, the famous "Garza stone" from Park Forest was purchased together with a section of the roof that it penetrated, the shattered boards from the attic, the hole in the bedroom ceiling, the window, shades and window frames that it hit as well as the bedroom closet door (mirror) that it smashed. I don't know who now has possession of these items. Re: [meteorite-list] Fully Documented Hammer?
Hi Anita and List, It makes sense that the most recent hammers should be the best documented falls because of the proliferation of digital devices with cameras. There is also increased awareness of meteorite falls in more recent years, so we are seeing very solid documentation for hammers. A good example is Park Forest. Nobody can begin question the hammer status of Park Forest, because so many targets were struck. So, I'd take it at face value that all of the known hammers in the last ~10 years are authentic. Since the year 2000, we have had the following hammer falls - Apr 30, 2011 - Soltmany (L6 chondrite) : Poland Jul 17, 2011 - Thika (L6 chondrite) : Kenya Jul 11-12, 2011 - "Draveil/Essonne?" (unofficial) - (H chondrite?) : France Jan 18, 2010 - Lorton (L6 chondrite) : Virginia USA Apr 14, 2010 - Mifflin (L5 chondrite) : Wisconsin USA Feb 15, 2009 - Ash Creek (L6 chondrite) : Texas USA Mar 01, 2009 - "Cartersville" (unofficial) (ordinary chondrite) : Georgia USA Sep 25, 2009 - Grimsby (H5 chondrite) : Canada Apr 12, 2008 - "Zunhua" (unofficial) (L4 chondrite?) : China Feb 21, 2007 - Mahadevpur (H4/5 chondrite) : India Jul 06, 2007 - Cali (H/L4 chondrite) : Columbia Sep ??, 2007 - (exact day unknown) - Guadalajara (L or LL3 chondrite?) : Mexico Jul 14, 2006 - Moss (CO3.6 carbonaceous chondrite) : Norway Jul 17, 2005 - "Montney" (H6 chondrite?) : Canada Nov 08, 2004 - Orlando (Eucrite) : Florida USA Feb 01, 2003 - Hiroshima (H5 chondrite) : Japan Mar 26, 2003 - Park Forest (L5 chondrite) : Illinois USA Sep 23, 2003 - New Orleans (H5 chondrite) : Louisiana USA Feb 03-14 2002 - Alby sur Cheran (Eucrite) : France Feb 20, 2002 - San Michele (L6 chondrite) : Italy Jul 21, 2002 - Thuathe (H4/5 chondrite) : Lesotho That is a total of 21 hammer falls in almost 11 years now - or about 2 per year on average. This year we have been a perfect 3 for 3 on recovered hammered falls. So we are seeing one of two things - a statistical increase of hammer falls (due in part to the proliferation of digital cameras), or Mother Nature has improved her accuracy. You can also figure that the human population and footprint increases each year, so the more of us walking around, the more likely we'll something get hit or be struck by something. It another century, the majority of falls over dry land will likely be hammers. The number of well documented falls drops off sharply in the previous century and most falls from antiquity can be considered anecdotal. The number of well documented hammers prior to the 21st century may be less than the number of hammers we have seen in the last 11 years. Think about that for a moment Best regards and Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, or Happy Saturnalia. :) MikeG -- * Galactic Stone & Ironworks - Meteorites & Amber (Michael Gilmer) Website - http://www.galactic-stone.com Facebook - http://tinyurl.com/42h79my News Feed - http://www.galactic-stone.com/rss/126516 Twitter - http://twitter.com/galacticstone *** On 12/23/11, wahlpe...@aol.com wrote: > Hi Anita, > > I would bet Michael ( Hammer Man ) Blood would know. : ) > > Sonny > > > -Original Message- > From: Anita Westlake > To: Meteorite List > Sent: Fri, Dec 23, 2011 2:49 am > Subject: [meteorite-list] Fully Documented Hammer? > > > Does anyone know about how many hammers have been fully documented that > have in one place/collection:1. Re: [meteorite-list] Fully Documented Hammer?
Hi Anita, I can't speak for falls outside the US, but there are 5 or 6 US falls that might fit your parameters. You are obviously familiar with Cartersville, GA (2007) I'm sure. It fits all your requirements except classification which will come soon I'm sure. The display is at the Tellus Science Center. Others are: Benld, IL (1938). I believe most pieces of the impacted auto and most of the H6 stone are in the Field Museum, Chicago. The small H5 stone and aluminum shed roof of the Centerville, SD (1956) are on display at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City. I believe the Field Museum also has a "holed" floor board of the Kilbourn, WI barn that was impacted by a H5 stone in 1911 and a small piece of the stone (and maybe a cast of it??). The Denver Museum of Nature and Science has the impacted roof and dry wall boards of the Canon City, CO (1973) H6 fall. It has at least a large fragment of the stone in its collection. There are a also a couple of private displays of Park Forest impacted artifacts (printer and stone) I believe. Peekskill might not fit your criteria, but I believe there is a cast of the whole meteorite that goes with the car. Hope this helps a bit, Frank - Original Message From: Anita Westlake To: Meteorite List Sent: Fri, December 23, 2011 7:49:50 AM Subject: [meteorite-list] Fully Documented Hammer? [meteorite-list] Mars Rover Opportunity Update: December 14-22, 2011
http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status.html#opportunity OPPORTUNITY UPDATE: Wheel Passes Checkup After Stalled Drive - sols 2805-2812, December 14-22, 2011: This period began with a campaign of using the Microscopic Imager (MI) and Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS) to examine a target called "Komati" on the "Saddleback" outcrop. After two days of collecting APXS data, a drive was planned for Sol 2808 (Dec. 17, 2011) to rotate the rover in a way that would bring a different target into range of the robotic arm (instrument deployment device, or IDD). During this turning maneuver the right-front wheel experienced elevated electrical currents, which tripped a fault response and stopped the drive. Telemetry suggested that the elevated current was due to the wheel's orientation with respect to the terrain (causing it to work harder than expected) and not an actuator failure. To verify this, diagnostics were performed on Sol 2810 (Dec. 20, 2011). The diagnostic tests confirmed the actuator's continued good health. A small drive of about 1.2 inches (3 centimeters) in the opposite direction was planned for Sol 2812 (Dec. 22, 2011) to clear the wheel from obstacles, if any existed, that may have hooked the wheel. This drive was also successful, further confirming the health of the actuator. With the success of this smaller drive, we are now comfortable proceeding with a larger arc that should give us additional wheel-current data and allow us to image the Sol 2808 stall point. This drive is likely to be of the magnitude of 6 inches (15 centimeters) and occur on Sol 2816 (Dec. 26, 2011). As of Sol 2812 (Dec. 22, 2011), solar array energy production is 297 watt-hours with an atmospheric opacity (Tau) of 0.645 and a solar array dust factor of 0.469. Total odometry is 21.35 miles (34,361.13 meters, or 34.36 kilometers). __ HAPPY HOLIDAYS!! Re: [meteorite-list] Tucson lodging advice help ??
Richard, I stayed in Marana last year at the Motel 6 that Ruben mentioned on Ina Road. The prices did not increase for the show and it was an "ok" Motel 6. It's a 10 mile easy freeway drive to the show and not much of a problem at all. I am staying there again this year. I booked months ago but if I remember right it was under $70/night and they do accept AARP cards for discounts. Mike's description of the prices was spot on. A room worth $70/night or less gets about $180 to $250 per night for the show closer to town. Way out of my price range. I'll be there the weekend of the bash and auction doing some filming with Ruben. I'll also be running around during the show filming and if anyone want to be filmed or show your rooms to the world, I need to kinda get an idea. This will be on MTV (Meteorite TV) at some point during the show (at least that's the plan right now!) There maybe two streaming feeds this year, but Ruben and I will work that all out and come up with a schedule of sorts, should be fun! Hello list! I enjoy the banter betweeen everyone! Ruben vs. Anne...should become a TV show! ...as well as Capt. Blood's stellar work for the upcoming auction, I need some advice from anyone who will chime in: It'll be my first-time Tucson visit. I'll be driving from Davis, CA.; hopefully arriving the last week of January and staying at least until SkyBar and the auction...(fortunately I have a pick-up)...and I need some advice for accommodations. While I'm up for camping, I do enjoy a nice clean-up and would rather plan for a comfortable / affordable room with no special ammenities, SAVING my money FOR METEORITES !!! So, who can steer me in a good direction? Where-o-where? Should I make a reservation (duh!) and is it too late to secure something worthy (thinking Super 8 kinda place)... (I knew that would invite some advice!) Please chime in! Sincerely, Richard Montgomery __ HAPPY HOLIDAYS!! Re: [meteorite-list] Tucson lodging advice help ??
You had better hurry, rooms expensive even for crap at gem show time, if you have the ability, best to try and stay in casa grande or benson both about 30-40 minutes away and 70% cheaper room wise, with your own vehicle it is easy to do. Book ahead or you might have to sleep out or pay $200 night for some flea-bit dump.
