Hi Diane,

Yes, that exhibition looks very interesting. A few members of BIMS
(British Irish Meteorite Society) are hoping to visit soon. Very
interested in seeing the Danebury meteorite as well of course as the
 Lake House stone.

[meteorite-list] 93 Kilo Druid Meteorite

Large Meteorite Likely Found in Druid Burial Site
Britain's largest space rock -- excavated 200 years ago by an archaeological
dig -- was preserved by the Ice Age.

a.. In a new exhibition, the 205 pound meteorite is on display, along with
its mysterious story.
b.. The space rock was likely found by druids to build a burial chamber
and later unearthed by archaeologists near Stonehenge.
c.. Scientists believe that the meteorite was preserved by the onset of
the Ice Age.

With a weight that rivals a baby elephant, a meteorite that fell from space
some 30,000 years ago is likely Britain's largest space rock. And after much
sleuthing, researchers think they know where it came from and how it
survived so long without weathering away.

The giant rock, spanning about 1.6 feet (0.5 meters) across and weighing 205
pounds (93 kilograms), was likely discovered by an archaeologist about 200
years ago at a burial site created by the Druids (an ancient Celtic
priesthood) near Stonehenge, according to said Colin Pillinger, a professor
of planetary sciences at the Open University.

ANALYSIS: Forget Space Beer, Order Meteorite Wine Instead

Pillinger curated the exhibition Objects in Space, which opened Feb. 9 and
is the first time the public will get a chance to see the meteorite. The
exhibition will explore not only the mystery that surrounds the origins of
the giant meteorite, but also the history and our fascination with space
rocks.

As for how the meteorite survived its long stint on Earth, researchers point
to the ice age.

The only meteorites that we know about that have survived these long ages
are the ones that were collected in Antarctica, said Pillinger, adding that
more recently, some ancient meteorites have been collected in the Sahara
Desert. This rock came from neither the Sahara Desert nor Antarctica, but
rather the Lake House in Wiltshire.

Britain was under an ice age for 20,000 years, Pillinger told LiveScience,
explaining the climate would have protected the rock from weathering.

At some point, the Druids likely picked up the meteorite when scouting for
rocks to build burial chambers. They were keen on building burial sites for
[the dead] in much the same way the Egyptians built the pyramids, Pillinger
said.

SCIENCE CHANNEL: Meteorite Men Videos

Then, years later, an archaeologist with ties to other, famous
archaeologists, likely found the rock while excavating the Druids' burial
sites, he said. The archaeologist then brought the rock back to his house in
Wiltshire, where its more recent residents took notice and alerted
researchers.

The men whose house this was found at spent a lot of time opening these
burial sites 200 years ago for purposes of excavating them, Pillinger said.
Our hypothesis is that the stone probably came out of one of those burial
chambers.

WATCH VIDEOS: FROM METEORS TO ASTEROIDSThe meteorite is called a chondrite,
a group that includes primitive meteorites that scientists think were
remnants shed from the original building blocks of planets. Most meteorites
found on Earth fit into this group.

ANALYSIS: Farmer Finds Rare Meteorite

Other objects on display include a much smaller meteorite, weighing about an
ounce (32 grams), and excavated from a grain pit where ancient peoples of
the Iron Age stored their crops. It was discovered in the 1970s at Danebury
Hill Fort in Hampshire, though it wasn't until the 1980s when scientists
analyzed metal in the walnut-size object did they realize its
extraterrestrial origin.

The exhibition will also include a Damien Hirst spot painting, which
features the famous Beagle 2 spacecraft as its center spot. In addition,
part of Newton's apple tree will be on display.

The story of how researchers are uncovering the origins of these impressive
specimens will astonish and delight visitors to this remarkable exhibition,
which also contains letters and books charting the history of scientific
interest in meteorites.

The Royal Society's London headquarters will house the exhibit through March
30.

Hi Phil and List,

The smaller Danebury stone is in the Met Bulletin. The larger stone
is not. I'm curious if the institution holding the larger stone has
any plans to get it classified and approved by NonCom?

Second question - did the Druids have any idea this stone was from the
sky? Or did they just find a heavy rock and keep it?

Best regards,

sitting on a crate of these.

Re: [meteorite-list] 2nd Report from Strewnfield in Edgewood Texas

2012-02-11 Thread Brian Cox

Hello Mexico Doug and List,

Yes, I agree with the information about the hunt and the chase and the fun
and perils of wild animals and wild and crazy people. I wrote before to
Mexico Doug last night and I was confused and there was a misunderstanding
on my part about a quote of Doug's about me, and I understand now and
contacted him last night and all is well and now I understand he was
agreeing with me on the things that we are all concerned about while trying
to hunt for meteorites and everything involved.

All the best to Mexico Doug and the list.

Brian

Hi George, Eric Guido

I generally agree with Count Guido; in the thick hammocks surrounded by
rich swampland where you see the panthers in Florida, the light can get
very tricky and towards animals all tend to black. I'm sure Eric saw
what he said, was definitly no wuss, and frequently footprints in the
sandy soil can be very difficult to dimension and size also vary
concordant with that besides the size/weight of the animal so that
really isn't a very reliable indicator although whatever he mentioned
he knows best...

...Speaking only for myslef, as I tend to hunt insects more than big
cats, that is. Really in Florida the only danger I ever worried about
wasa coral snake. But here's a panther in Florida on youtube,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_uxO79138CQ#t=2m27s

lucky catch, but if you spend enough time in there you are bound to run
across these guys. Unless threatened, they will do exactly what you
see here and to say an experienced hiker in the 'Glades would be scared
is really not likely. Probably there are more food resources
everywhere here so they don't become irritable for food and break
people's neck's often (never that I heard). Plus the posting of the
Big Bend, TX incident was a 6 year old kid. Don't know the details but
I get the idea that the parents ought to have kept a better eye on him
no matter what is said. People get so bent out of shape over risk.
One swimmer gets bit by a shark and there is pandemonium. More people
get killed going to the beach in their cars ... same concvept with the
poor cats at work. But I guess if I were the unlucky one I'd be
whistling a different tune. So better jusdty to take normal
precautions and not do anything stupid, and respect the wildlife. I've
lost count of all the wild boars, large snakes and weird reptiles and
animals I've seen hunting in Mexico and so far keeping one's distance
with respect and everyone peacefully co-exists. Oh, but I can get the
crap scared out of me, too, don't get me wrong, all alone at night when
a cow moos the hell suddenly beside my tent and starts peeing on it and
you can't see your hand in front of your face. Then there's the
coyotes, I love 'em. But they can get into groups and start wailing
like a devil being exorcized and they don't quit. Yeah, I admit those
noises can be scarier than swimming with Great Whites, and you know
coyotes 99.9% of the time put their tail between their legs and take
off.

Kindest wsihes
Doug

Re: [meteorite-list] Allende Meteorite and Pancho Villa's Beautiful Saddle sold for a record in Mesa, Arizona last week.

2012-02-11 Thread Brian Cox

To Mexico Doug and list,

Speaking of Allende and Pancho Villa, here is a link to his beautiful saddle
that sold in Mesa, AZ last week for $718,000.00 US Dollars and it gives a
little history about Pancho and how he was honored by both America and
Mexico and how his head was stolen from his grave and has never been found.

All the best to the list and Mexico Doug, and to the memory of Pancho Villa
