[meteorite-list] Bryan Scarborough still at it!
List, I would like to give my opinion regarding Bryan Scarborough a.k.a, lonestar*meteorites. I try to give everyone the benifit of the doubt and after hearing the questions about John/Bryan's Tissint listing I had to go and look at his listings for myself. While doing so that I noticed he had a 27.2g Oum Dreyga slice he was selling that looked an awful lot like an unclassified slice I purchased from him a couple years ago. It was the next slice after mine so I recognized the inclusions and shape immediately. I can honestly say my slice is not Oum Dreyga as similar as they look. Oum Dreyga has twice the metal flakes as mine and I'm positive, as his. Mine is much more likely an L-chondrite, not an H. Though very similar at first glance they are indeed different and I've spent the last half hour verifying my claim. I would not trust one damn thing this guy sells! This is now the second stone he is selling which I know first hand isn't having both his specimen and the actual specimen he is representing it as. He is still up to his old game and now I am positive! Buyers still beware! Just thought I would share my 2¢. Re: [meteorite-list] Bryan Scarborough still at it!
Hi Brandon and List, Thanks so much for this warning and going public with it. You are doing a valuable service to the meteorite community as a whole. I have noticed a DISTURBING trend in the meteorite world lately, and that is secrecy involving members who have fallen from grace by offering bogus specimens. Without Jason Utas coming forward and going public, non-IMCA members would have never known that their collections were compromised by Scarborough-Esparza bogus Mifflin affair where NWA chondrites like Chergach/Bassi were being sold as Mifflin. To all of the watchdog groups out there who are supposedly safeguarding the integrity of the market - STOP BEING SECRETIVE about the wrongdoings of your members. By sweeping their misdeeds under the rug, you are doing to entire community a disservice and acting as accomplices in the destruction of the integrity of collections of non-members who are not privy to the internal business/wrongdoings of the group. The entire community, members or not, have a RIGHT to now if their collections are comprised by your members. Stop trying to salvage the damaged reputation of your group by hiding the crimes of disgraced members. This secrecy is backfiring because many of us are informed collectors who are not pushovers or fools - we know what is going on, despite the best attempts to cover it up. It's only making the group worse than it really is. The next time one of the members of these groups engages in criminal or unethical activity, do not limit the announcement to your own members - TELL THE PUBLIC. We have a right to know. If not, informed collectors are going to start taking their business elsewhere. [meteorite-list] HELP PLEASE - PECULIAR METEORITE DISCOVERY....
Folks, I need your help; there is a problem here---I'm just not certain as to its nature. A seemingly honest fellow from Sandy Hook, NJ came to my office late today in the hope I could verify what he was told could be a meteorite---and it is. This fellow said that just after he moved in a year ago, he found it on the embankment of his backyard just beyond which is a 75 foot escarpment. The wife said she tried to throw the rusty thing out a couple of times and both times he rescued it from the garbage. It is a medium octahedrite which weighs 4.236 kg. How do I know it's a medium octahedrite? I could make out a feint pattern underneath a veneer of rust on the cut face. Yes, roughly speaking, this fellow found a cut and prepared meteorite in his backyard. The fellow left the specimen in my possession and agreed to allow me to have a sample removed and forwarded for analysis. I advised him there could be a problem here that could be readily determined---and he didn't seem fazed. While I've been accused of being naive, I nonetheless genuinely believe he and his wife are honestbut I just don't get it. Any thoughts here? Northeastern New Jersey. End piece. Re: [meteorite-list] Bryan Scarborough still at it!
I guess what is most shocking of all this is his 100% feedback. Even more bizarre and no offense to anyone, is that if you click his feedback (feedback left as a Seller) there are many familiar names of Buyers in the meteorite collecting community who should no better then risk taking a chance purchasing any specimens, especially after this Seller has been targeted for questionable authenticity of meteorite specimens in his auctions. * What scares me most is that the many specimens this Seller has sold over time will someday make their way back to the collecting community and most likely via future eBay auctions. These Buyers/Collectors of lonestar meteorites auctions, may eventually re-sell these specimens either to acquire a bigger piece or different specimen thus tainting (most likely unknowingly) other peoples meteorite collections by selling a specimen that was not what it really is. * Here again I can only express as I have done over and over again (sounding like a broken record) either on my Website, my eBay auctions or this List, the importance of PROVENANCE! I fully understand that sometimes provenance can get lost in time with paper work...it has happened to me but not very often. The importance of keeping RECORDS and your paper work of the sale, such as the Seller's name, the COA if one is supplied and the ID card etc should be first and foremost and only takes a few minutes of time! You need to have this in order to protect yourself and especially if you re-sell your meteorite. These meteorite specimens just don't grow on trees in peoples backyards! They have to have come from somewhere, someone. Ask a Seller for this specimens history information. Demand some kind of Provenance or COA, at least an ID Card and have them sign it before you even consider to bid or buy. Protect, Protect, Protect yourself and your ass-etc.! Most importantly protect your fellow meteorite collecting community from the wrongful misrepresentation of specimens being sold by speaking up and warning others such as this List the IMCA and other meteorite organizations, so we can get rid of these type plagues. Re: [meteorite-list] It's about time!
Greetings again, Yep, mr. curry picked on the wrong guy from the same state and Blaine was waiting for the right opportunity. There are some people you just shouldn't mess with and I believe Blaine is one such person. He's the nicest guy in the world and as fair as they come but he won't tolerate people like that who cause untold damage in our community and to himself!! Thanks for the kind words Greg! Scam. Sent from my iPhone On Feb 13, 2012, at 8:45 PM, Darryl Pitt dar...@dof3.com wrote: Folks, I need your help; there is a problem here---I'm just not certain as to its nature. Re: [meteorite-list] Bryan Scarborough still at it!
Hi Brian. Thank you for the reply and I am very well aware of who you are and Lonestar Meteorites. I understand your concern and apologize for not putting in the * between the name when I mentioned lonestar*meteorites seller on eBay. I believe that this name similarity was explained here on the List but agree that it needed to be explained again as you did. I hope that forwarding this reply back to you and the Met List clarifies any confusion to you and your Buyers/Patrons and anyone reading this posts. Hello Don, My name is Brian Barnett. I have been a collector of meteorites since about 1968 and a dealer operating under the name Lonestar Meteorites since the late 1990's. I am licensed under that name by the Texas Comptrollers Office and by the county where I live. I was informed last night that a person using the Ebay name lonestar*meteorites existed. After reading your posts to the list this evening, I wanted to clarify that we are not one and the same. The posts I am reading cause me some alarm as my usual customers may read them. With that said, I do not sell meteorites on Ebay but only at Texas gem mineral shows. I appreciate what you are trying to do but felt it necessary to clarify that my company Lonestar Meteorites is not advertising on Ebay under the name lonestar*meteorites. I guess what is most shocking of all this is his 100% feedback. Even more bizarre and no offense to anyone, is that if you click his feedback (feedback left as a Seller) there are many familiar names of Buyers in the meteorite collecting community who should know better then risk taking a chance purchasing any specimens, especially after this Seller has been targeted for questionable authenticity of meteorite specimens in his auctions. Protect, Protect, Protect yourself and your ass-ets.! Most importantly protect your fellow meteorite collecting community from the wrongful misrepresentation of specimens being sold by speaking up and warning others such as this List the IMCA and other meteorite organizations, so we can get rid of these type plagues.
