RELEASE: 12-387

NASA'S CURIOSITY ROVER PROVIDES CLUES TO CHANGES IN MARTIAN ATMOSPHERE

PASADENA, Calif. -- NASA's car-sized rover, Curiosity, has taken
significant steps toward understanding how Mars may have lost much of
its original atmosphere.

Learning what happened to the Martian atmosphere will help scientists
assess whether the planet ever was habitable. The present atmosphere
of Mars is 100 times thinner than Earth's.

A set of instruments aboard the rover has ingested and analyzed
samples of the atmosphere collected near the "Rocknest" site in Gale
Crater where the rover is stopped for research. Findings from the
Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instruments suggest that loss of a
fraction of the atmosphere, resulting from a physical process
favoring retention of heavier isotopes of certain elements, has been
a significant factor in the evolution of the planet. Isotopes are
variants of the same element with different atomic weights.

Initial SAM results show an increase of 5 percent in heavier isotopes
of carbon in the atmospheric carbon dioxide compared to estimates of
the isotopic ratios present when Mars formed. These enriched ratios
of heavier isotopes to lighter ones suggest the top of the atmosphere
may have been lost to interplanetary space. Losses at the top of the
atmosphere would deplete lighter isotopes. Isotopes of argon also
show enrichment of the heavy isotope, matching previous estimates of
atmosphere composition derived from studies of Martian meteorites on
Earth.

Scientists theorize that in Mars' distant past its environment may
have been quite different, with persistent water and a thicker
atmosphere. NASA's Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution, or MAVEN,
mission will investigate possible losses from the upper atmosphere
when it arrives at Mars in 2014.

With these initial sniffs of Martian atmosphere, SAM also made the
most sensitive measurements ever to search for methane gas on Mars.
Preliminary results reveal little to no methane. Methane is of
interest as a simple precursor chemical for life. On Earth, it can be
produced by either biological or non-biological processes.

Methane has been difficult to detect from Earth or the current
generation of Mars orbiters because the gas exists on Mars only in
traces, if at all. The Tunable Laser Spectrometer (TLS) in SAM
provides the first search conducted within the Martian atmosphere for
this molecule. The initial SAM measurements place an upper limit of
just a few parts methane per billion parts of Martian atmosphere, by
volume, with enough uncertainty that the amount could be zero.

"Methane is clearly not an abundant gas at the Gale Crater site, if it
is there at all. At this point in the mission we're just excited to
be searching for it," said SAM TLS lead Chris Webster of NASA's Jet
Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif. "While we determine
upper limits on low values, atmospheric variability in the Martian
atmosphere could yet hold surprises for us."

In Curiosity's first three months on Mars, SAM has analyzed atmosphere
samples with two laboratory methods. One is a mass spectrometer
investigating the full range of atmospheric gases. The other, TLS,
has focused on carbon dioxide and methane. During its two-year prime
mission, the rover also will use an instrument called a gas
chromatograph that separates and identifies gases. The instrument
also will analyze samples of soil and rock, as well as more
atmosphere samples.

"With these first atmospheric measurements we already can see the
power of having a complex chemical laboratory like SAM on the surface
of Mars," said SAM Principal Investigator Paul Mahaffy of NASA's
Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "Both atmospheric and
solid sample analyses are crucial for understanding Mars'
habitability."

SAM is set to analyze its first solid sample in the coming weeks,
beginning the search for organic compounds in the rocks and soils of
Gale Crater. Analyzing water-bearing minerals and searching for and
analyzing carbonates are high priorities for upcoming SAM solid
sample analyses.

Researchers are using Curiosity's 10 instruments to investigate
whether areas in Gale Crater ever offered environmental conditions
favorable for microbial life. JPL manages the project for NASA's
Science Mission Directorate in Washington. The SAM Instrument was
developed at Goddard with instrument contributions from Goddard, JPL
and the University of Paris in France.

Re: [meteorite-list] meteorites and TAXES

2012-11-02 Thread Mark Bowling
Hi everyone,
I'd be interested in learning what a tax accountant says about the question.

I think the numbers mentioned below might be accidentally mixed up.  According
to CBO numbers for 2010, Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid are the items
that add up to 42% of spending.  The military is 20%.  And if you don't base it
against spending and compare to actual tax revenues received, military spending
is 30.4% of taxpayer dollars (and SS & the other two use 64.9% of taxes paid).

If anybody does learn if newly found meteorites (or gold nuggets/old
coins) mean taxes owed, please let us know.

Increased taxes never seem fair if your income is fixed or your salary
drops...  but as Michaels said, I'd rather have my taxes go up if it means I
had a bit of luck in the field.

Hoping that we all have plentiful windfalls this hunting season,
Mark

Michael,

Taxes are fine, excessive taxes are not.  Wasting taxpayers money is
disrespectful to the hard working people who employ these public servants.

As the old saying goes; at least a drunken sailor is wasting his own money not
the taxpayers.

My slogan has always been "Save Earth, It Is The Only Planet That Serves Beer!"

Greg & all,

Whew!  That is really bad news.  I was beginning to think Jenniskens was a good
guy.

What would his Sutter's Mill database look like if we eliminated all but the
academics?  Rogue private meteorite hunters made it happen.  So sad.

Jenniskens, if you are reading this, let's hear your defense.  We all
understand
misquotes.  Is this one?  I surely hope so.  If not, your stock just went to
zero.

Cheers,

Bob,

I respect your 'protected' stance on this subject, however when you say this
was
a, "missed opportunity [for outreach]...", was in fact part of Jennisken's
grand
plan as quoted in the article and stated by the 'private citizen' getting the
'free ride' on "The Blimp". I will quote here for one's direct assessment...

"Jenniskens invited Rivera to join him and another scientist on the airship
ride
over Novato and parts of unincorporated Sonoma County, following the trajectory
of the Oct. 17 fireball. Rivera said he took an oath not to tell what they saw
for fear that rogue meteorite hunters — eager to sell galactic collectibles on
eBay — might pounce on new potential meteorite locations and rob scientists'
ability to research more rocks."

I personally take issue with his entire paragraph! It insults the dedication
from us, "rogue [private] meteorite hunters", actual meteorite scientists and
the average enthusiast at large! What a slap in the face from an media-hungry
astrologer to make against us who have committed our lives to the world of real
meteorite recovery, science and sharing through the expansion of actual
knowledge to the entire world! We, as private citizens, have donated more to
the
study and knowledge of meteoritics than anyone really knows. Most contributions
are made by private individuals who donate because they can and want to without
the hype or the huge mug shot photo opp!!

It scares me to think that an individual who is not even knowledgeable about
the
most simplistic aspects of a meteorite is out there representing our national
treasure, NASA! What a let down if this rogue astrologer is allowed to continue
his personal slime campaign against the private sector!! Shame, shame!!

Hello All,

Given that it was a "free ride", I think Petrus missed an obvious outreach
opportunity.  BEFORE the airship took off, he should have submitted articles to
the Sonoma County newspapers soliciting the local residents to look for black
space-rocks in their yards and driveways.  Mention could have been made in
advance that an airship would be incorporated in the search effort. Would make
an interesting article for the local papers.  The airship flying over Sonoma
would have been free advertising for meteorite recovery.
We've done a good job of saturating the media in Marin County, but nothing
directed towards Sonoma residents.
We need to stretch the strewn-field into Sonoma County and we're going to need
a
lot of cooperation from the residents.

Re: [meteorite-list] Video - Manchester Meteorite Day

2012-11-02 Thread Martin Goff
Excellent video Luther, really captures the atmosphere of the day. I
think the saying that the camera adds 2 pounds to your weight is wrong
though, as in my case it's clearly added at least 10 pounds! ;-)

Great record of a fantastic day :-)

[meteorite-list] NASA/SETI missed opportunity + OT: tax strategy

2012-11-02 Thread Matson, Robert D.
Airship = publicity

I don't think taxpayers are on the hook for any measureable amount of
revenue spent on that "joy trip". Is it scientifically useful?
Absolutely
not. Is it cool to get to fly around in an airship? Sure -- it's
fabulous! (I've had the pleasure of doing so in a LEGITIMATE work
capacity many years ago.)

That said, like Bob Verish I believe NASA/SETI missed an opportunity
for public outreach in their zeppelin flight: they should have taken
out newspaper/TV/radio ads warning people in advance that live under
the ground track that an airship was going to be flying overhead on a
such and such a day. If anyone saw the airship high above their horizon,
then *THEY* were in the strewn field!

OT: Mike, on your question to Adam about tax strategies, you asked:

"Adam, are you taking full advantage of your allowed deductions? For
example, if you have an area in your home that dedicated to your
business, you can deduct tax burden based on the square footage of the
home office. They actually assign a dollar value to each square foot
of your office, so take advantage of that."

While legally true, this is a VERY BAD idea if the tax savings you
are talking about are no more than a few thousand dollars. It is a
major red flag for IRS auditors, so if you decide to claim home use
as a business, the rest of your tax return better be squeaky clean.
In most instances, the tax savings are not worth the risk of an
audit.

Best,
Rob

Re: [meteorite-list] meteorites and TAXES

2012-11-02 Thread Adam Hupe
Hi Paul and List,

Good question.

The problem is that the new tax laws, hidden and partially due to the
Affordable Health Care Act have not yet been fully decoded so nobody knows
where they stand. My accountant can't even advise me of what to expect in 2013.
The laws are so complicated that I can no longer calculate my own tax
returns.   I was appalled at all of the surprises on my last return which
included sending out 1099s to friends that help you out if you pay them over
$600.00.  I only thought this applied to businesses which was repealed.  You
will be fined $100.00 for every one these 1099s you don't send out.  Pretty
soon everybody will have to 1099 the newspaper boy, the kid that mows your lawn
or a neighbor who sold you some personal belongings to make ends meet.

The best advise is to talk to an accountant with superhuman skills that can
decode the new hidden taxes that are not even referred to as taxes.

I think is time to change the subject and dream about somehow making it back
out to the field before hypertension sets in.

Take Care,

Adam

I remember back in the day when Sammy Sosa and Mark Mcguire were in a homerun

[meteorite-list] missed opportunity (was, Re: NASA SETI Misappropriation of Tax Payer Funds)

2012-11-02 Thread Robert Verish

We need to stretch the strewn-field into Sonoma County and we're going to need
a lot of cooperation from the residents.

Re: [meteorite-list] NASA SETI Misappropriation of Tax Payer Funds

2012-11-02 Thread Adam Hupe
I like the auction style format where the buyer determines the market price is
the only reason I have stuck to eBay thus far.  It used to be a self-supporting
hobby that has turned into an expensive one, at least for me.

All of these new eBay customer service rules have tied me down making travel
nearly impossible.  I wish it was like it was five years ago when you could
sell something on eBay for a fair price, make a reasonable profit and travel at
the same time.

I cannot stand regulations and eBay has too many new rules that only serve to
make a seller work twice as hard.

Take Care,

Adam

Adam, I don't know why you have been having problems for last four years (they
have been my best money making years). Perhaps eBay is your problem. I have
abandoned eBay for the most part, because of rising costs and declining service
and lack of protection for sellers. Sales on eBay collapsed three years ago and
I stopped wasting my time there. Once Meg Whitman took over and decided that
screwing the people who make you money (sellers) as hard as they could was a
the good business decision, I told them very impolitely exactly what they could
go do with themselves every time they called me begging me to come back and
start listing again,  You have to adapt to the new economy or it will crush
you. Perhaps flying more than hundred thousand miles a year on meteorite hunts
worldwide helps, if I relied on American falls and finds, I would be bankrupt
by now, and if I hunted like NASA and SETI, I would have bankrupted a small
state as well.

Re: [meteorite-list] NASA SETI Misappropriation of Tax Payer Funds

2012-11-02 Thread Robert Verish
Greg, Mendy, and All,

To the best of my knowledge, no public (NASA) funds have been spent on this
meteorite fall.
I will post to this List a local newspaper article that explains that the
finder (Lisa Webber) gave N01 to her neighbor (Glenn Rivera) because the stone
hit her house on his birthday.  Subsequently, Glenn has loaned the N01 stone to
Peter for "scientific studies".  As a result, Glenn was offered and accepted a
seat on the airship as an observer.

My bad, for not posting this article before, but I thought all of the Novato
news stories were over-saturating the List, but now I see there is no such
thing as too much information.  I promise not to make that mistake again.  I
will endeavor to do a better job of reporting from the field.

Hello Jodie and List,

Rather then looking for actual stones on the ground, could it be they are
tracking hunters movements, collecting data as finds are made, by whom and
where, then relaying to individuals on the ground as to where best to search
based on that info?

Re: [meteorite-list] NASA SETI Misappropriation of Tax Payer Funds

2012-11-02 Thread Jodie Reynolds
Hello Greg and List!

It was my understanding that the airship rides were contributed. Is
there reliable information that they're plunking down NASA-dollars
for that? Because I agree - that'd be pretty criminal.

Believe me, no one could possibly be any crankier about
misappropriation of tax-payer dollars than I! I just want to make
sure we string up the "right ones".

2012-11-02 Thread Adam Hupe
Hi MikeG and List Members

I refuse to get into politics or accounting too deeply here on the List unless
it concerns meteorites in some way. My point is that the last four years have
been the worst I have ever experienced from a financial standpoint and the low
profits from meteorite sales are nearly wiped out due to heavy taxes and
eBay/PayPal fees.

Most of my friends have lost their homes and the cost of everything else has
nearly doubled due to the price of gas and huge tax increases on the middle
class.  Last year was the first time I had to 1099 friends for mere few hundred
dollars because they were trying earn a few bucks to hang onto their homes
which they lost anyway.  Collectable sales are way down from four years ago
because they are not an absolute necessity.

The good news is that there are a lot less people smoking cigarettes because
they cannot afford them any more.  Three of my friends quit a few years ago.
Hurray for them!

On this point, I will not be restocking U.S. meteorite finds because there is
absolutely no margin left and the U.S. government is watching eBay for them.  I
have already been hassled over Gold Basin.   Once they are gone, somebody else
can risk supplying the market with them.  It seems the U.S. market is going
underground as predicted anyway due to mass hype in the media and unnecessary
new governmental restrictions.

Happy Collecting, it is definitely a buyers market,

Adam

Hi Adam and List,

It's always the poor and middle class that get hit the hardest.  The
super-rich have excellent accountants and financial advisors, and they
take advantage of loopholes and grey areas that the average person is
not aware of.

Adam, are you taking full advantage of your allowed deductions?  For
example, if you have an area in your home that dedicated to your
business, you can deduct tax burden based on the square footage of the
home office.  They actually assign a dollar value to each square foot
of your office, so take advantage of that.

The computer you are reading this on - deductible as a business
expense.  Also, if you computer is used for internet-based commerce,
you can also deduct a portion of your internet provider fees.

You can also shelter some of your profits by putting it into a trust
for a grandchild or relative.

Going to Walmart to buy packing materials?  Not only can you write off
the materials you buy, you can write off the gas you spent to drive
there.

Do you conduct business with dealers or collectors via telephone?  If
so, you can write off the phone bill as a business expense.

If you don't already have one, get yourself a really good accountant
who knows all of the loopholes and will help you take advantage of
them.

Or, as a last resort measure, do what the ultra-wealthy do : transfer
some of your cash to an offshore or foreign bank.  Or, stick a giant
wad of cash into a safety deposit box and let it sit there - it won't
gather interest, but it will be invisible for tax purposes.

People talk about how high the tax rates are for businesses and
corporations, but very few of the big companies pay anything close to
the tax rate.  The General Electric company recently got a REFUND and
the last couple of years, their tax burden has been well under 10%.
Try finding a company that pays the full tax rate - it's difficult to
do, although many mom and pop small businesses have to pay.  But
generally speaking, the bigger the company, the bigger the money
involved, the more they manipulate their finances to dodge their tax
burden.  Go down the list of Fortune 500 companies, and I would wager
that only a small handful of them pay more than a 20% rate.  Some of
them pay nothing or next to nothing.

The little guys have to pay so much, in part, because the big guys
aren't paying their share -
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-505144_162-36945095/top-25-corporate-tax-dodgers/

Read that linked article and you'll see what I mean.

Back to meteorites - yes, the blimp/airship/whatever is a total waste
of money.  What is next?  Are we going to bring Gary Powers back from
the dead and have him fly a U2 over strewnfields?  It's downright
silly.  Sure, you might be able to see a large impact crater from an
airship, but it would have to be really BIG and such a feature could
be easily spotted on the ground.  I'll change my name to Nancyboy
Fancypants if a single meteorite is found by using a blimp.

I am generally very supportive of NASA and SETI.  But this blimp
nonsense seems like an attempt to garner media attention and not a
method to find meteorites.

Best regards and happy huntings,

MikeG

Re: [meteorite-list] NASA SETI Misappropriation of Tax Payer Funds

2012-11-02 Thread Anne Black

Yes, that does not make any sense.
Alan Rubin did the classification, and called it an L6, one of the most
commun types of meteorites.

From Bob Verish's email:

It is an L6 breccia. W0 S4
olivine Fa 24.1±0.4 (n=21)
Low-Ca pyx Fs20.7±0.5 Wo1.5±0.2 (n=22)
Ca-pyx Fs8.0±0.7 Wo44.7±0.8 (n=5)
The chromite grains are somewhat richer in Al2O3 (6.4 wt.%) and MgO
(3.4 wt.%)

than unshocked OC chromite, but are more characteristic of shocked and
shock-melted chromite grains.
Most of the metallic Fe-Ni is taenite with 77.7±5.0 wt.% Fe, 21.4±5.4
wt.% Ni
and 0.51±0.18 wt.% Co (n=18). Only one kamacite grain was identified
(7.2 wt.%

Ni and 1.1 wt.% Co).
The Co content of this single grain is intermediate between the ranges
for L
(0.70-0.95 wt.% Co) and LL (1.42-37.0 wt.% Co) chondrites, but is
closer to L.

Plagioclase: Ab86.0±0.6 Or7.0±0.4 (n=14) is richer in alkalis than
typical OC

plagioclase, and probably reflects shock melting.

Troilite is essentially pure FeS; it contains no detectable Cr, Co or
Ni.

I'm sure the reporter misquoted and misunderstood some of the things
they were

Jenniskens told Rivera that the space rock is one of only 20 ever found

"All the researchers are stoked because it's a really rare one," Rivera

Jenniskens invited Rivera to join him and another scientist on the

an oath

not to tell what they saw for fear that rogue meteorite hunters —

Greg,

If I could agree more than 100%, I would.

Some of the "blimp" reports claim the researchers are looking for

likely areas
to hunt.  Crater or no, why can't they do this using Google Maps and
Google

Earth like the rest of us.

My second issue, is why is a private citizen being given a free ride.

What are
this person's credentials that he can add scientific value or meteorite
hunting
expertise?  I want to go on the blimp - sounds like fun and at least I
know what
one looks like.  Even better why not reach out to the professional
meteorite
hunters on this list who have shown success over years of hunting in
different
countries, terrains and conditions and work together towards a common
goal.  I'm
willing to bet that 1 hour strategizing with one of you pro hunters
would pay

off infinitely more than 1 month in a tax-payer waste of money blimp.

Finally, I have always been a strong supporter of NASA (National

Aeronautics
and Space Administration). This sort of thing makes me reconsider that
support,

especially in TERRESTRIAL matters where they are not the experts.

Re: [meteorite-list] NASA SETI Misappropriation of Tax Payer Funds

2012-11-02 Thread Adam Hupe
Yes, our tax burden is at record levels. 28% collectable capitol gains plus
15% FICA plus multiple fees(taxes) attached to nearly everything including the
water we drink; What an outrage!  Remember this when you bid on meteorites on
eBay. Since they are collectables like gold, silver and platinum, the
seller is being taxed at the highest possible capital gains tax rate
which is expected to go up depending on who is elected.

Who says the middle class isn't being squeezed harder than ever before?  To see
our hard earned money wasted on frivolous pursuits like blimp rides under the
name of science beyond ridiculous.

Some of my thoughts as unlisted private home and cell phones are ringing off
the hook incessantly with political robocalls trying to get my vote.

To All Concerned US Tax Payers...

I have been troubled by what is a clear misappropriation of US tax payer funds
by NASA/SETI. At a time of this country's financial crisis, this is no time to
squander our tax dollars!!

We have all seen and read about 'The Blimp" that was, as stated in the article
link below, "... a NASA-hired airship." Not only are they using a privately
owned "Blimp" for frivolous and far-fetched 'research', but they are also
giving free joy rides to private citizens as stated from the article, "Glenn
Rivera [a private citizen] was invited by astronomers [NASA/SETI] to hunt for
more meteorite crash-landing sites from a NASA-hired airship."

In recent conversations, I and many of my colleagues and some NASA scientists
(who wish to remain anonymous), have all concluded that finding meteorites [of
any size] is completely impossible and a waste of tax payer dollars! How can
one think you can spot a black rock the size of a dime, a golf ball or even a
basketball from an altitude of 1000 feet?

The only entity that benefits from these dream hunts is the private company who
owns "The Blimp". They get paid by NASA for use of "The Blimp" and they also
benefit from all of the free advertising with their logos and web addresses
emblazoned on the sides of "The Blimp"!

As far as I am concerned, hunting for meteorites floating in the sky is full of
hot air!

Re: [meteorite-list] NASA SETI Misappropriation of Tax Payer Funds

2012-11-02 Thread Mendy Ouzillou
Greg,

If I could agree more than 100%, I would.

Some of the "blimp" reports claim the researchers are looking for likely areas
to hunt.  Crater or no, why can't they do this using Google Maps and Google
Earth like the rest of us.

My second issue, is why is a private citizen being given a free ride.  What are
this person's credentials that he can add scientific value or meteorite hunting
expertise?  I want to go on the blimp - sounds like fun and at least I know
what one looks like.  Even better why not reach out to the professional
meteorite hunters on this list who have shown success over years of hunting in
different countries, terrains and conditions and work together towards a common
goal.  I'm willing to bet that 1 hour strategizing with one of you pro hunters
would pay off infinitely more than 1 month in a tax-payer waste of money blimp.

Finally, I have always been a strong supporter of NASA (National Aeronautics
and Space Administration). This sort of thing makes me reconsider that support,
especially in TERRESTRIAL matters where they are not the experts.

Martin,Thanks for sharing your X-ray videos of SM73. That is a very neat use
of technology to peek inside a meteorite without cutting it. There's a very
interesting looking inclusion in that stone--the grouping of white blebs in the
second video (SM73 Loc8) at about the 12 second mark is extremely neat as they
appear encased in a membrane-like bubble. Would any of the scientists on the
list know what that grouping might be?Aloha,MatthewMeteorite Treasures

Hi Aziz and List,

Is there a date for this new fall? I'd like to add it to my list of
recent falls that I maintain, but I need some more information first.

This has been a busy year for falls and this would be the ninth fall
of this year and the most falls in any year since 2008 (10 falls, 9
official plus Zunhua).

Re: [meteorite-list] Is new Morasko find the largest meteorite in Europe?

2012-11-02 Thread Galactic Stone & Ironworks
Hi Bob,

AFAIK, the largest meteorite on display in any European museum is the
Cranbourne meteorite which weighs about 3.5 tons. However, this
meteorite was found in Australia and is not native to Europe.

NOTE - the numbers shown below are TKW weights and not weights for a
single mass - unless otherwise noted in the Bulletin.

Largest European meteorites (by TKW) according to the Met Bulletin :

GERMANY - Bitburg - 1.5 metric tons
FRANCE - La Caille - 626kg
ITALY - Alfianello - 228kg
POLAND - Morasko - 290kg
ROMANIA - Mocs - 300kg

Armenia - Kulp - 3.72kg
Austria - Mauerkirchen - 19kg
Belgium - Tourinnes-la-Grosse - 14.5kg
Bosnia - Zavid - 95kg
Bulgaria - Rasgrad - 24.7kg
Croatia - Hraschina - 49kg
Czech Republic - Elbogen - 107kg
Denmark - Jerslev - 40kg
Estonia - Tennasilm - 28.5kg
Greece - Seres - 8.5kg
Hungary - Ofehértó - 3.75kg
Ireland - Limerick - 50kg
Latvia - Nerft - 10.25kg
Lithuania - Zemaitkiemis - 44.1kg
Netherlands - Utrecht - 9.7kg
Norway - Finmarken - 78.3kg
Serbia and Montenegro - Dimitrovgrad - 100kg (single mass)
Slovakia - Magura - 150kg
Slovenia - Javorje - 4.92kg
Spain - Zaragoza - 162kg
Sweden - Muonionalusta - 230kg
Switzerland - Twannberg - 20.69kg

That is what I could find in the Bulletin. Does anyone know if any of
the above TKW's represent a single mass?

Best regards,

MikeG

Re: [meteorite-list] Is new Morasko find the largest meteorite in Europe?

2012-11-02 Thread Martin Goff
Hi Bob/List,

Although the new Morasko find is large at 300kg the meteorite of La
Caille, first found in the mid 17thth century in France weighed 625kg
so is definitely larger :-)

Cheers

Martin

[meteorite-list] A three-dimensional X-ray 'flight' through Sutter's Mill

2012-11-02 Thread valparint
Outstanding.

Check out the chondrule bag on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSnhBryLwBw.
Starting at 11 seconds and running to about 17 seconds, there appears to be a
spherical structure that contains a bunch of chondrules of various sizes.

Thanks,

Re: [meteorite-list] WE FOUND BIGGEST POLISH METEORITE 300kg!

2012-11-02 Thread Craig Moody

Congratulations to all! A stunning find, and well worth the extreme effort.
that looked like a dangerous hole to be digging in, but I would have gladly
helped, if I was there. Where is this going to end up? Hopefully not on a saw
table. Again, congrats!!
Cheers,
