Thanks for the update Mike. But alas poor Eurich, NWA 231 is still in limbo.

will see it officially classified before the year ends. Oh hang on,

I don't think they cared much about time zones but their calendar was more
accurate than the one in use today.  They had no need for leap years so you
don't need to worry about them being a day or two off.

They were a brilliant but brutal civilization.

On another note, I have never seen so many airplane com trails as I have seen
in the blue skies here today in Nevada.   It looks like a lot of people are
bugging out to Vegas to empty their bank accounts or at least bring on the end
of the world as we know it in style.

My prediction is that there will be a lot of hungover people on the 22nd
Pacific Standard Time

Best Wishes,

What if the "end" is not an instantaneous event? Maybe the process
takes days or weeks and it starts on 12-21-12. The actual final act
might be days or weeks away. It's a well-known fact that the alien
tractor beam takes at least 11 days to move the Earth out of it's
orbit. They activated it today, so relax. It will be next year
before the Earth is plunged into the Sun. :)

In the meantime, I am taking deposits on micromounts of the Nibiru
impactor. Shortly after impact, I will don a +3 Radsuit and collect
samples. These samples will be sold to those buyers who reserved

Dear List Members,

The Black Phoenix - Revealed!!

First, here is the definition of, "The Black Phoenix", according to an
online site: "The common representation of 'Phoenix' is rebirth and new
life. Black is used to absorb energy, so a "Black Phoenix" would mean new
energy."

I would like to announce the rebirth of the old web site that was dedicated
to my brother Adam and my first lunar meteorite 12 years ago, NWA 482. I
have completely rebuild www.LunarRock.com to include all of the planetary
meteorites that we have been directly or semi-directly involved in bringing
to the world. I wanted a web site where I could celebrate and share part our
achievements. It showcases two dozen Lunar and Martian meteorites, provides
links to all of the scientific papers written about these celestial stones
and you will find many photos and other fun features I hope you will enjoy!

The second web site is brand NEW! I wanted to build a web site to share my
different Expeditions & Adventures, Articles I have written or I am somehow
associated with, News, Scientific findings and to offer for sale;
Meteorites, Fossils, Minerals and Artifacts. I believe I have finally
realized a dream I have had for many years in the form of this new web site,
www.NaturesVault.net

I would like to thank the handful of friends who beta tested the sites
during the 2 ½ months of building, gave advice and suggestions, and
especially to my programmer friend who went above and beyond to help me
build two custom web sites from blank pages.

Without further delay, I present to you:
Lunar Rock
www.LunarRock.com

and...
Nature's Vault
www.NaturesVault.net

Both sites still have some work to be completed so please check back
occasionally as I will be adding more features and continue to add more
meteorites and the other natural history items I plan to offer.

Please enjoy your visit!

Greg

And thanks to those already figuring this out. I am sending out both

re: 'The Art of Collecting Meteorites' - Don Merchant wonders how many
copies were ever available, and would like to know their history. With
pleasure I will describe this.

In December, 2004 I purchased 1,000 paperback copies (I tend to call
them 'hard copies' as differentiated from eBooks) from self-publisher
Bookmasters in Ohio. Per contract I was liable for paying for 1,100
copies if their printing presses 'forgot' to stop at 1,000. Surprise!
I got to pay for the extra 100 copies which was another $1,500. OK. In
early 2011 I was running out of copies and realized that I was still
selling one copy/week. I didn't have time to do the eBok thing yet. I
didn't want to 'leave money on the table' nor did I want to disappoint
new collectors, so I ordered up another 100 copies at a much higher
per copy rate because of the small order and high shipping to Florida.
I had to raise the cover price $5 to cover the difference.

I am now down to about one dozen copies, Gary and Blaine, as
mentioned, have a few more that they will likely offer at Tucson.

As for 'signed and numbered copies', the first large batch - and the
first week I offered the book I sold 300 copies- were signed, maybe
signed and numbered. After that, I did it only when requested. Then
after that, I put 'signed and numbered copies' only on eBay because
they bring more $ sometimes. After that, I only offered signed copies
on eBay.

Now I have a couple left that will be signed for eBay and only #500
left of the numbered books.

Next year I will de-activate the book's website as it is not needed
for the eBook..

How 'bout that, Don!

Thanks to all for your support of this project.

Re: [meteorite-list] Watch out Ebay Sellers! Total scammer scammingmeteorite!

2012-12-20 Thread Adam Hupe
What upsets me about eBay is that they seem to forget that the sellers are what
brings them the revenue and that eBay is merely a facilitator, not a broker.
There have been numerous times that they decided the fate of my money stored in
their PayPal account.

What gives them the right to decide that a parcel was not lost when it was
really stolen?  The exact situation Mike describes has happened to me many
times, just to have eBay always side with the buyer even though proof of
shipment was always produced.   In my case, it seems to be big-ticket items
that are lost, usually overseas. They will hold some of the sellers funds back
in PayPal and decide the fate themselves.

I even had an eBay agent have the nerve to give me a job evaluation on the
telephone!  I told her that "I do not work for eBay, they work for me and their
performance is poor!"  She then said, " I better have you talk to an account
representative complementary due to detecting some hostility."

You bet I become hostile when thousands of dollars have been stolen from my
PayPal account by having them decide what to do with my funds in the case of a
fake missing package report.

[meteorite-list] NASA Puts Orion Backup Parachutes to the Test

2012-12-20 Thread Ron Baalke

RELEASE: 12-441

NASA PUTS ORION BACKUP PARACHUTES TO THE TEST

HOUSTON -- NASA completed the latest in a series of parachute tests
for its Orion spacecraft Thursday at the U.S. Army Yuma Proving
Ground in southwestern Arizona, marking another step toward a first
flight test in 2014. The test verified Orion can land safely even if
one of its two drogue parachutes does not open during descent.

Orion will take humans farther into space than ever before, but one of
the most challenging things the multipurpose vehicle will do is bring
its crew home safely. Because it will return from greater distances,
Orion will reenter the Earth's atmosphere at speeds of more than
20,000 mph. After re-entry, the parachutes are all that will lower
the capsule carrying astronauts back to Earth.

"The mockup vehicle landed safely in the desert and everything went as
planned," said Chris Johnson, a NASA project manager for Orion's
parachute assembly system. "We designed the parachute system so
nothing will go wrong, but plan and test as though something will so
we can make sure Orion is the safest vehicle ever to take humans to
space."

Orion uses five parachutes. Three are main parachutes measuring 116
feet wide and two are drogue parachutes measuring 23 feet wide. The
21,000-pound capsule needs only two main parachutes and one drogue.
The extra two provide a backup in case one of the primary parachutes
fails.

To verify Orion could land safely with only one drogue parachute,
engineers dropped a spacecraft mockup from a plane 25,000 feet above
the Arizona desert and simulated a failure of one of the drogues.
About 30 seconds into the mockup's fall, the second drogue parachute
opened and slowed the mockup down enough for the three main
parachutes to take over the descent.

The next Orion parachute test is scheduled for February and will
simulate a failure of one of the three main parachutes.

In 2014, an uncrewed Orion spacecraft will launch from Cape Canaveral
Air Force Station in Florida on Exploration Flight Test-1. The
spacecraft will travel 3,600 miles above Earth's surface. This is 15
times farther than the International Space Station's orbit and
farther than any spacecraft designed to carry humans has gone in more
than 40 years. The main flight objective is to test Orion's heat
shield performance at speeds generated during a return from deep
space.

I liked Derek Sears's final words during the interview.

This is a transcript of what he said:

"It was a meteorite dealer who actually picked up the first piece and that
dealer was more than willing to share his information with Peter. [...] The
lesson I've come away with is you had a hundred or so people in the field, you
had researchers, you had meteorite dealers, you had members of the public, you
had the state park's people and the degree of collaboration and enthusiasm
amongst a hundred people ... they had one thing in common ... they were
passionate about finding meteorites, some of them were gonna get money as well,
some were gonna get other sorts of rewards but the point is, what Sutter's Mill
demonstrated to me was how these very diverse people can come together and
produce incredible results despite having come at the problem from very
different directions. There is an innate passion for rocks from space that was
a privilege to watch."

And thanks to those already figuring this out. I am sending out both
pdf files as fast as I can.

re: 'The Art of Collecting Meteorites' - Don Merchant wonders how many
copies were ever available, and would like to know their history. With
pleasure I will describe this.

Mike,

Actual gross revenue for eBay doesn't look like that according to thisŠ.
http://www.statista.com/statistics/74244/quarterly-revenue-of-ebay-since-20
07/

Small dip in Q1 2012 but not a meteoric decline. However this includes all
revenue streams and looking at the breakout hereŠ
http://www.ebayinc.com/content/fact_sheet/eBay_Inc_Corporate_Fact_Sheet_Q3_
2012

US & International transaction revenue looks to have shown only very
modest growth in the last 5 years which may well indicate losing volume
and gouging more. Not a winning strategy to keep up I agree.

[meteorite-list] PSI Scientist Uses Weather Radars to Revolutionize the Recovery of Meteorites (Sutter's Mill Meteorite)

2012-12-20 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.psi.edu/news/press-releases#suttersmill

Partly Cloudy With a Chance of Meteorites: PSI Scientist Uses Weather
Radars to Revolutionize the Recovery of Meteorites

Planetary Science Institute

Dec. 20, 2012, Tucson, Ariz. -- Scientists get to study meteorites in
the laboratory all the time, but its not often that a scientist gets to
work on a meteorite after watching that meteorite fall. This happened to
Marc Fries of the Planetary Science Institute, who is performing
laboratory analysis of meteorites from April's Sutter's Mill, Calif.
meteorite fall.

But there's a twist - Fries didn't see the meteorite fall with his own
eyes, but rather was the first person to "see" the fall by looking
through imagery from weather radars. Since finding the Sutter's Mill
fall, Fries and his colleagues Robert Matson, Jake Schaefer and his
meteorologist brother Jeff Fries have found three more confirmed
meteorite falls in the United States in only eight months.

The quick recovery and resulting findings are described in a Science
paper published today titled "Radar enabled recovery of Sutter's Mill, a
unique carbonaceous chondrite regolith breccia" on which Fries is a
co-author.

The Sutter's Mill meteorite fall occurred just before 8 a.m. April 22 as
an uncommon daytime fireball. The fireball passed south of Reno, Nev.,
headed west and was seen across Nevada and California. Residents around
Coloma, Calif. reported hearing a "scary" loud sonic boom that shook
their houses.

These are signatures of a meteorite fall, and there was immediate
interest in finding the site where any meteorites would have landed.
Traditional meteorite recovery based on eyewitness accounts, however, is
a tedious and uncertain process. The American Meteor Society estimates
that one meteorite fall occurs every day somewhere on Earth, and yet the
Meteoritical Society typically records only about 10 new meteorite falls
worldwide each year. Meteorite falls are fairly common, but meteorite
recoveries are a rare event.

A new tool is improving those odds. Weather radars operated by the
National Weather Service continually scan the skies over the United
States, and Fries and his colleagues realized that any meteorites that
fall in the U.S. could be detected on radar. Sure enough, weather radars
not only recorded the Sutter's Mill fall, but actually presented that
data while the fall was still in progress.

With radar imagery of the April 22 fall in hand, Fries immediately
contacted Petrus Jenniskens of the SETI Institute in Mountain View,
Calif. and lead author on the Science paper, and meteorite hunter Robert
Ward. Fries directed them to the site of the meteorite fall, where they
parked their vehicles. Both men proceeded to find meteorites in the
parking lot. After these discoveries, meteorite hunters, scientists from
nearby institutes, and curious members of the public descended on the
site. To date more than 60 meteorites weighing a total of more than 900
grams - about two pounds - have been recovered. The meteorite, named
"Sutter's Mill" after the historical site near where they were found, is
a rare carbonaceous chondrite that contains valuable clues to the origin
of Earth's water and light organic compounds that may have played a role
in the origin of life.

The Sutter's Mill meteorite is important to science because it is a
leftover product from the same ancient processes that created the Earth
and other planets. "This meteorite is about 4.5 billion years old,"
Fries said. "To put that in perspective, stretch your arms all the way
out. Now let's say the distance across the span of your arms is 4.5
billion years. If that were 4.5 billion years, then a single swipe with
a nail file across your outermost fingernail would remove all of
recorded human history. But the meteorite has witnessed the entire span
of time represented by your outstretched arms. It is probably the oldest
thing you will ever encounter here on Earth."

Fries is now part of a multi-institute consortium investigating the
meteorite, and will analyze the structure of carbon in the Sutter's Mill
carbonaceous chondrite using a technique called Raman spectroscopy. This
technique measures the alteration that this meteorite has experienced in
its lifetime, ranging from its initial formation from dust and gas, to
accumulation into an asteroid, and finally to the events that created
the bright fireball seen April 22 in Nevada and California.

The use of weather radars to detect meteorite falls has already
dramatically increased the number of meteorites available to science,
and to the public. Since Sutter's Mill, the team has located the Battle
Mountain, Nev. meteorite fall (5.9 kilograms of meteorites recovered),
the Novato, Calif. fall outside San Francisco (approximately 364 grams
recovered), and a fall outside of Addison, Ala. that to date has yielded
about 90 grams of meteorites. Meteorites are found regularly in deserts
around the world, but freshly fallen meteorites like

i had an email from a buyer telling me how happy he was with the meteorite,
then days later he filed a claim saying it never arrived. I sent first class
$10 meteorite, and could not prove it. I showed eBay and Paypal the email proof
of the buyer thanking me for the nice specimen, you know what they said? "Too
bad, email communications with buyers don't count, only shipping proof".
The con man got a refund and I got screwed. That was two years ago, my eBay
sales have dropped 99%, no more auctions and only some store items left selling
very slowly.
I used to sell $30-60,000 a year on ebay! now perhaps $1000-3000.
I guess their business geniuses figured that the $10 item i got stolen from me
would not piss me off so badly. They were dead wrong, and it is costing them a
lot of money. Multiply that by millions of pissed-off sellers and now you know
why ebay is dropping like a rock revenue-wise.

Re: [meteorite-list] "The Art of Collecting Meteorites" now available for your Kindle or Nook! - ad

2012-12-20 Thread Don Merchant
Hi List and Kevin. Can anyone briefly explain the history of this book. In
other words I remember some years back when this came out for the very first
time, and I purchased a soft cover copy. I believe at that point there were
like only 300 or so copies ever available, and maybe the first 300 were
signed. When did the amount change? When did it go to hardcover? Do I have a
"first print"? Just wondering.

Team Meteorite:

I'm on the last lap and the finish line is near. The race to sell more
than a thousand copies of my self-published book before they become
unwanted cockroach motels is nearly over. After this long run -
mentor Darryl Pitt predicted in 2005 that the book would "have legs"-
I am momentarily left with only a few hard copies of 'The Art". The
economics and logistics predict there will never be more printed.

But the spirit of the book lives on as an eBook, available to any who
want some of my hopefully humble, thoughtful insight.

Amazonians Kindling their fire can buy it here:

http://www.amazon.com/The-Art-Collecting-Meteorites-ebook/dp/B009PPCII8/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1353120481&sr=8-2&keywords=the+art+of+collecting+meteorites

Barnes and Noble Nookies can buy it here:
http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-art-of-collecting-meteorites-kevin-kichinka/1113461735?ean=2940015572629

"The eBook Editor" was the company that worked through a difficult
script as eBooks rarely are rich with color illustrations. And nothing
would have ever happened at all if Paul Harris hadn't found a way to
re-format the books original file after I couldn't get it done
commercially for love or money.

I have added three important chapters covering the circumstances of
the falls of Chassigny, Nakhla (with the only detailed, eye witnessed,
fact-based and historic existing published account of the 'dog-gone')
and now the complete illustrated "The Rise of the Raj and the Fall of
Shergotty".

MARSROX writing on Mars rocks :>)

If my $15 "Global Meteorite Price Report - 2013" can't wiggle a way
into your budget, the ebook is a $9.95 stocking stuffer.

It IS last call on the paperback version so go to
www.theartofcollectingmeteorites NOW for one of the few remaining
available hard copies. After these are gone - Gary "Big Kahuna" and
brother Blaine Reed have a few left, too- the last couple in my
possession are destined for eBay in later days, including the
penultimate signed and numbered #500.

It is my sincerest pleasure to offer these works- the "Global
Meteorite Price Report - 2013", the story of the circumstances
surrounding the Shergotty fall, and a new version of "The Art" as an
eBook to everyone that like me, has passion about those objects of
attraction and dis-traction we call meteorites. And I could not do any
of it without the help, guidance, inspiration and support from the
generous members of Team Meteorite. Thank you!

And before I forget, may everyone's holidays, and all days forever
after, be filled with happiness and grace (and rare rocks from space).

Re: [meteorite-list] Watch out Ebay Sellers! Total scammer scammingmeteorite!

2012-12-20 Thread Galactic Stone & Ironworks
I had a buyer pull this on me this past April. She claimed she never
received the item, when the delivery confirmation clearly showed that
the package arrived on the very same day that she filed the PayPal
case. She claimed to never receive the item. Postal service said
otherwise. eBay and PayPal ruled in my favor, but she left a negative
feedback that remains. I didn't feel like going around and around
with eBay on the telephone to straighten it out. Funny, they can
accept a complaint via email, allow someone to post an undeserved
negative feedback via the web, yet they cannot take down the negative
feedback without speaking to me over the phone? What a bunch of BS.

I listed a couple of small batches of eBay auctions this past month,
just to capitalize on the holiday shopping madness. I have since
stopped and will not run any more until this time next year. eBay can
take a long walk off a short pier.

Hey eBay! Guess what?! Guess how much store and seller's fees I paid
for the last four years on my own website - ZERO. LOL!
Muwhahahahaha. Suckers.

So, I just wanted to tell my fellow ebay meteorite sellers about this
total scammer on Ebay that is buying meteorites.
This guy bought a really nice bullet-shaped Taza from me and stated
that he didn't like it but he didn't want to go to the trouble of
returning it, he just wanted his money back, and I told him that if he
wanted his money back he was going to have to return the piece. I
don't offer partial refunds or anything. I just needed the piece
returned.
Here's whet he did I almost still can't believe he did this - he
returned to me a bubble mailer, with an EMPTY gemjar - no meteorite.
He kept the TAZA and GOT a REFUND!
Eventually Ebay ended up giving me my money back, but he also kept his
money and the TAZA! Ebay says that they will let him steal this time,
and keep him on Ebay, and just watch to see if he does it again. So, I
am just warning all of you guys out there about him b/c I am sure if
you are prone to do something that evil, you don't do it in a vacuum,
and you will surely do it again.

I received both emails, the one from Hupe and also the one from Higgins, I sent
them straight to my junk folder unopened. So today I opened the folder and was
surprised to see that the two bogus emails were indicated as having been
opened. I know nothing about spam, never received any before that I'm aware of,
so want to ask if the messages having been opened is a problem? Also, if anyone
can explain how they got opened to begin with, was it simply that I had moved
them? Thanks, William

Curiosity Rover Explores 'Yellowknife Bay'
Jet Propulsion Laboratory
December 18, 2012

Mars Science Laboratory Mission Status Report

PASADENA, Calif. -- The NASA Mars rover Curiosity this week is driving
within a shallow depression called "Yellowknife Bay," providing
information to help researchers choose a rock to drill.

Using Curiosity's percussive drill to collect a sample from the interior
of a rock, a feat never before attempted on Mars, is the mission's
priority for early 2013. After the powdered-rock sample is sieved and
portioned by a sample-processing mechanism on the rover's arm, it will
be analyzed by instruments inside Curiosity.

Yellowknife Bay is within a different type of terrain from what the
rover has traversed since landing inside Mars' Gale Crater on Aug. 5,
PDT (Aug. 6, UTC). The terrain Curiosity has entered is one of three
types that intersect at a location dubbed "Glenelg," chosen as an
interim destination about two weeks after the landing.

Curiosity reached the lip of a 2-foot (half-meter) descent into
Yellowknife Bay with a 46-foot (14-meter) drive on Dec. 11. The next
day, a dr
