Re: [meteorite-list] ARREST MADE in break in and meteorite theft.
Hi John and List, Great news! Karma is a b*tch. I hope they get what they deserve. But, more importantly, I hope all of the specimens were recovered in good condition. The specimens are the main point here, so if they are recovered, then this is a good ending. As Mendy said, fencing certain stolen items is easy. And historically, selling stolen meteorites has been difficult for the thieves. But, with the ascent of eBay and the proliferation of new, small, unknown sellers offering meteorites (some using legit offerings as cover for questionable offerings), it is now easier to sell dubious specimens. One can take a recognizable rare slice and cut it down into less-recognizable small part-slices and sell them off one by one that way. Facebook is a sales venue as well, and a lot of bogus stones are being offered there. But, thankfully, most criminals of this kind are stupid. They make mistakes. And these circus clowns got caught. Re: [meteorite-list] 24 gram Pahrump Meteorite Find 12-29-2012
Hi Doug, Thanks for your compliments and all the personal emails I've received from many list members. It was an amazing find and I still can't get over the excitement. I think this is really special find and I can't wait to get it classified and valued! BTW: I have always been apprehensive about setting up a Facebook page but today I finally went ahead and made one. I didn't even have a personal page until today. The page I created today is devoted to Meteorite Hunting And Other Adventures so, if anyone has any great stories, feel free to share them here: http://www.facebook.com/MHAOAdventures. The main reason for not setting up a Facebook page sooner was that I was afraid I might not be able to keep up with updating it and I can't stand stale websites - I'm a perfectionist and I can't stand myself sometimes. :) This marks the second cold find for me. Stories of both finds are on my new Facebook page if anyone is interested to read more. OK, not the last update. I see he called it "ALLEDE" when he should have called "ALLEGED" Unfortunately, his/her attitude is prevalent on eBay in other sectors. It is just a matter of time when up to 40% of the offerings on eBay are misrepresented like the gemstone market which has been taken over by Chinese colored glass. The Chinese tried to move into the meteorite market with iron ore but so far have failed due to the vigilance on the part of meteorite collectors. Knowledge is key when collecting anything. Re: [meteorite-list] Suspicious (ok, flat out fraud) Allende on eBay
Last update - response from Kidcentavo: "Mr. I am NOT an EXPERT on meteorites, AND the ONLY thing I have to go by is the label that came with the rock. The owner of the shop, who sold it to me has been in the mineral business since 1963, AND has a very GOOD reputation, dealing with all minerals, and fossils. IF he says its an ALLEDE from Chihuahua, then I HAVE to believe him that it is. I am NOT going to nick a piece off of it run down to the university and PAY for an analysis to get the exact chemical composition of the stone. Most of the other listings are slices,of allende, EXCEPT one, that I see listed. If you think it's from Africa, that's your opinion. Kidcentavo" At this point, nothing more to be done that will have any effect, so all I can say is, "caveat emptor." Here is his response back to me regarding the stone's history: I bought it from Southwestern Minerals and Gems, Albuquerque New Mexico in 2005 and it had INFORMATION card with it. i.e. what kind of meteorite it was, where it was from, and the date of the fall along with the name of the shop. No mention however WHO COLLECTED IT or WHEN it was collected, I do not think the owner of the gem shop, knew that information. ANY other questions? Kidcentavo I have blocked him and many other suspicious eBay sellers. If you want the list email me privately. Am curious to see his response. Had a thought regarding fraudulent sellers on eBay. We should make a list of these people and make sure they cannot buy specimens from us. Here is my logic. Seems like some of these scammers buy genuine items to lend credibility to their other not-so-genuine items listed for sale. I for one do not want anything I sell to be used as part of someone else's fraudulent activity. I will start putting a list together and I'll send it out to everyone who wants it.
