Greetings List,

To shoot one's mouth off without thinking is the same as shooting a
firearm off with out aiming. No other comment as it will make things
worse.

Re: [meteorite-list] ARREST MADE in break in and meteorite theft.

2012-12-30 Thread Galactic Stone & Ironworks
Hi John and List,

Great news! Karma is a b*tch. I hope they get what they deserve.
But, more importantly, I hope all of the specimens were recovered in
good condition. The specimens are the main point here, so if they are
recovered, then this is a good ending.

As Mendy said, fencing certain stolen items is easy. And
historically, selling stolen meteorites has been difficult for the
thieves. But, with the ascent of eBay and the proliferation of new,
small, unknown sellers offering meteorites (some using legit offerings
as cover for questionable offerings), it is now easier to sell dubious
specimens. One can take a recognizable rare slice and cut it down
into less-recognizable small part-slices and sell them off one by one
that way. Facebook is a sales venue as well, and a lot of bogus
stones are being offered there.

But, thankfully, most criminals of this kind are stupid. They make
mistakes. And these circus clowns got caught.

Best regards,

MikeG

Re: [meteorite-list] 24 gram Pahrump Meteorite Find 12-29-2012

2012-12-30 Thread Guenther
Hi Doug,

Thanks for your compliments and all the personal emails I've received from
many list members.

It was an amazing find and I still can't get over the excitement. I think
this is really special find and I can't wait to get it classified and
valued!

BTW: I have always been apprehensive about setting up a Facebook page but
today I finally went ahead and made one. I didn't even have a personal page
until today. The page I created today is devoted to Meteorite Hunting And
Other Adventures so, if anyone has any great stories, feel free to share
them here: http://www.facebook.com/MHAOAdventures. The main reason for not
setting up a Facebook page sooner was that I was afraid I might not be able
to keep up with updating it and I can't stand stale websites - I'm a
perfectionist and I can't stand myself sometimes. :)

This marks the second cold find for me. Stories of both finds are on my new
Facebook page if anyone is interested to read more.

Nice find, Guenther!

That's a fresh, beautiful chondrite. Well done! It looks so fresh, I wonder
if this could possibly be from the recently witnessed Southern CA-NV meteor
event?

Great news indeed. We'll probably never know but I would like to know what
motivated the theft of the meteorites. Electronics are easy to sell, meteorites
not so much.

Re: [meteorite-list] Suspicious (ok, flat out fraud) Allende on eBay

2012-12-30 Thread Mendy Ouzillou
OK, not the last update. New email from kidcentavo:
"Mendyo: After thinking this situation over, I will PULL the listing from
ebay, I have put a warning notice on the listing with what you said about
possibly being a west african common meteroite BUT ebay won't let me remove
it now, it will have to expire. I WILL take it to our university here in
town for anaylsis. And pay for it. IF it is the african rock, MY LOSS no one
else's. BUT, IF they tell me it is FROM Chihuahua it will go back on ebay
with the documentation, BUT it won't be for NO 895 dollars, AND everyone out
there can take that to the bank. KIDCENTAVO"
I sent him pictures of what real Allende looks like as well.

Last update - response from Kidcentavo:
"Mr. I am NOT an EXPERT on meteorites, AND the ONLY thing I have to go by is
the label that came with the rock. The owner of the shop, who sold it to me
has been in the mineral business since 1963, AND has a very GOOD reputation,
dealing with all minerals, and fossils. IF he says its an ALLEDE from
Chihuahua, then I HAVE to believe him that it is. I am NOT going to nick a
piece off of it run down to the university and PAY for an analysis to get
the exact chemical composition of the stone. Most of the other listings are
slices,of allende, EXCEPT one, that I see listed. If you think it's from
Africa, that's your opinion. Kidcentavo"

At this point, nothing more to be done that will have any effect, so all I
can say is, "caveat emptor."

Yup, it was pulled for a few hours and then he put it back up. Here is his
response back to me regarding the stone's history:
I bought it from Southwestern Minerals and Gems, Albuquerque New Mexico in
2005 and it had INFORMATION card with it. i.e. what kind of meteorite it
was, where it was from, and the date of the fall along with the name of the
shop. No mention however WHO COLLECTED IT or WHEN it was collected, I do not
think the owner of the gem shop, knew that information. ANY other questions?
Kidcentavo
I have blocked him and many other suspicious eBay sellers. If you want the
list email me privately.

The suspicious Allende has been pulled. Looks like kidcentavo got nervous

I sent him an email asking who he originally bought the specimen from. Am
curious to see his response.
Had a thought regarding fraudulent sellers on eBay. We should make a list of
these people and make sure they cannot buy specimens from us. Here is my
logic. Seems like some of these scammers buy genuine items to lend
credibility to their other not-so-genuine items listed for sale. I for one
do not want anything I sell to be used as part of someone else's fraudulent
activity. I will start putting a list together and I'll send it out to
everyone who wants it. I will block these eBayers from buying from me.
If you want to be amused by someone completely delusional, read the

put up with this kind of BS.

Nice find, Guenther!

That's a fresh, beautiful chondrite. Well done! It looks so fresh, I wonder if
this could possibly be from the recently witnessed Southern CA-NV meteor event?

[meteorite-list] Vesta, Ceres, Jupiter, AND a meteor

2012-12-30 Thread Charles Butterfield
Hi Jodie,

Very nice!

Timing IS everything, isn't it?

As a budding astrophotographer, may I ask what you used to annotate the
shot?

Best regards,

I was out just before moon-rise trying to see if I could catch Vesta, Ceres,
and Jupiter together.

Just after I opened the shutter for a 6" exposure, I saw a meteoroid streak
across the sky apparent heading towards Ain. Very short and dim, I hoped
it'd be enough to expose at 1000ISO.

It did! Vesta, Ceres, Jupiter, and a meteor trail in the same frame!

Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good!

Here it is with the red channel processed up a little bit to expose it.
Sorry about the sky noise, I was shooting through a sucker-hole in the
clouds and the moon was already brightening the sky. No other processing
other than resize to 1280x1024.

P.S. Pardon the annotations, I needed them for registration to find the
darned minor planets. ;)

Re: [meteorite-list] Suspicious (ok, flat out fraud) Allende on eBay

2012-12-30 Thread Adam Hupe
I see he called it "ALLEDE" when he should have called "ALLEGED"
Unfortunately, his/her attitude is prevalent on eBay in other sectors.  It is
just a matter of time when up to 40% of the offerings on eBay are
misrepresented like the gemstone market which has been taken over by Chinese
colored glass.  The Chinese tried to move into the meteorite market with iron
ore but so far have failed due to the vigilance on the part of meteorite
collectors.  Knowledge is key when collecting anything.

2012-12-30 Thread Mendy Ouzillou

I have blocked him and many other suspicious eBay sellers. If you want the

The suspicious Allende has been pulled. Looks like kidcentavo got nervous

[meteorite-list] AD> A few auctions on ebay including 11g Tatahouine

2012-12-30 Thread Pelé Pierre-Marie
Hello

I wish you a happy new year 2013 with many falls and finds.

Take care, you and your family.

I've got a few auctions on ebay still running, including a 11 grams Tatahouine
still at 20 euros (27 dollars).

Shipment can be combined and solutions found for cheaper shipment than
indicated in many cases.
